The recent Anna Hazare movement for Janlokpal Bill is such an exercise. If you look at the govt. policies and programmes, lower middle class and middle class totally isolated. They are more slave than the poor or upper middle class or super rich. Despite hard work and dignity in their approach, they are the victim of democratic excesses i.e. corruption, criminalisation and lack of governance. The civil society (as majority of citizen esp. middle class people) supporting because they are loosing faith in the system of democracy. We are running with defective laws with defective system. That need to set right to live with dignity of our labour and hard work. When govt. getting bigger our we are loosing our freedom. We are criminalized and eliminated. It is evident in many new legislation like land acquisition for SEZ, urbanisation, road, port and other developments, acquiring land for industry and other causes, people are isolated and dealt with heavy hands. The pressure people are facing need such movement to release the energy and ensure better participation in the interest of future democracy in India. Otherwise, people get themselves like Maoist and other such movements which will make more harm than any good. Anna team doing a new political management and social engineering through peaceful means and the message is very loud and clear, don't give up, there is a room for hapless Indian to fight against corruption and mis-governance. In the days to come it will be strengthened in any other form. RTI and NEGRA such legislation only possible because of middle class demand and Anna, Arvind Kejriwal and other such eminent peoples contribution. So don't try to undermine the Anna's Jan Lokpal Bill. It is inevitably needed for the sake of Indian democracy and the rise of dignified Indian masses. I am curious to know why you decided to go to Jidal and what changes you found in yourself after spending 11 days there. You see I am a diabetic in my mid 60's and considering going there and would appreciate you input tremendously. Thaks Very interesting! Its like a wave. There will be a high point, when one feels that democracy is deepening, like now with formation of such bills. Such moments do not last for long. Like in the book Animal farm, the democracy is upturned after a short while, the animals rise against it and democracy prevails for a while and then it is upturned again..this shall go on forever (b) Totally agree to 'The Indian Middle Class sowed the wind of democracy and is now reaping its whirlwind' sanskriti (a)I do not think the democracy is deepening, just a bill cannot ensure that. I had read about Kiva in another context - Genghis Khan at his peak at conquered Kiva during his invasion of the Khwarzemid empire.... Also the centre of the world must have shifted over time since Europeans perceived that the sea was a safer route to India and China than Central asia. But must say, its fascinating to read about this history. Very interesting!
