Leadership and Change
Leadership and Real Change
One of the most frustrating things about change is that no-one can see the
benefits as quickly as you can, as leaders. Why is that? Why are people so
stupid, defensive and traditional. Why can’t they be more like you? You’ve
done all the hard work. You’ve looked at the strategy, weighed up the pros
and cons. You’ve even carried out a cost-benefit analysis to prove that
it’s worth it. Yet still they won’t change.
Well there are some very good reasons. The first would be because you, as
instigators of change are in a pretty good position. It’s your change. You
own it and have bought into it. It really means something for you.
Also, you really are ahead of the game. In terms of the Coping Cycle you’ve
gone past the denial, defence and discarding stages. Your self-esteem and
performance may have been on the floor a few weeks ago, but now - hey -
you’re all for it. Of course you are but your team aren’t there yet.
They’ll be at various stages of the cycle. There’ll be some with you and
there’ll be others in the ‘why?’, ‘you are joking?’, ‘change again?’
stages. These people need to be helped through this cycle and supported as
their self-esteem dips, their performance hits rock bottom.
You know what this is like.
Remember that new computer system we had installed. They said it was the
best, state of the art, superb, blah, blah. A week later you couldn’t even
send an email - it had all changed. God how you hated it. How you wished
you could have your new system back. However, as time went by and you
learnt to use it properly it was ’so much better than the previous system’,
and even ‘I don’t know why we didn’t introduce this years ago?’. So, that’s
another good reason.
There’s also a really interesting model that explains this in a different
way. It’s a very simple formula for change. It says that to overcome
resistance to change you need a Vision, an idea of the first steps and
enough dissatisfaction with the current situation to make it happen.
Dissatisfaction x Vision x First Steps > Resistance
The Vision is usually the easiest. Well, it’s all relative. However, if you
haven’t got something to aim for then why on earth are you carrying out
this change process. Unfortunately people who have the vision are not
always the best at communicating that vision to others. If this is
something you, as a leader, struggle with then perhaps getting others
involved at this stage would help.
These could be people at all levels who are committed to the change. Choose
the cynics in the Organisation as well as the starts. Cynics frequently
have great networks and once they are won over the task gets a lot easier.
Invest time and effort into these ‘change champions’ ( not my favourite
word either), and communicate, communicate, communicate. Use every medium
you can think of - people are different. They pay attention to different
things - you know that.
The first steps can prove tricky. If people are sold the vision properly
and the benefits explained it’s a great start. People, already under threat
from this change process want to know what’s going to happen and when.
There’s nothing wrong with that. The problem however is that life isn’t
that simple. If it’s a large change programme that will take months, years
- then there’s probably no-one in the Organisation that knows every step of
the process. Yet, people expect you to. They expect that you’ll know what
will happen to their part of the office on April 24th 2007. It’s not
logical. It’s not reasonable but there it is. What is logical and
reasonable is that you’ll know with some certainty what the first steps
will be. You have to let people know what you know, and also what you don’t
know.
A useful analogy to help with this is to think of the change as a journey
across the sea. Your Organisation is the boat and the vision is somewhere
out there. The vision is fairly clear. OK it may change slightly but it
should have been defined clearly so you at least know where you’re heading.
The journey is not entirely under your control. There are numerous factors
that will affect your route.
In nautical terms; wind, tide, expertise of crew, condition of boat, etc.
In business terms; finance, resource, expertise of crew, condition of
Organisation, etc.
The only reasonable expectation would be to chart out the first few weeks,
stages of the project. If you try to do anything more than this inevitably
it will fail and you would have failed to meet peoples’ expectations. Then
you’ll have the whole ‘told you it wouldn’t work’ scenario to deal with.
Don’t set yourself up to fail.
The difficult part (which doesn’t seem to occur in other models) is the
element of dissatisfaction. For this process to kick off the
dissatisfaction needs be real and significant before any change happens.
It’s generally not until this dissatisfaction reaches epic proportions that
you’ll do anything. This applies to change in all areas of life, not only
the business world.
For instance I’m 47 years old. I used to play rugby and football but that
was a while ago now and .Well let’s just say I like a drink, good food and
I could do with losing a few pounds. Really I should start going to the gym
and eating healthier (my first steps). I would quite like to see my
daughter grow up and have grandchildren and live a good few more years yet
(my vision). So why on earth aren’t I doing the right things now?
It make total sense, logically for me to eat healthier, take more exercise
yet I haven’t done it. I guess my dissatisfaction level isn’t sufficiently
high yet. If I started having some heart murmurs, or had a friend of a
similar age in hospital that may well do the trick.
I’m not suggesting for one minute that you go out and make your staff
miserable with the current situation. That would certainly raise their
dissatisfaction level but they may well decide to leave instead of change.
No, what I’d suggest is that you talk to people and raise their level of
awareness. One consequence of being stuck in ‘denial’ is that you won’t see
what’s going on around you. Something obviously needs to change - hence
change initiative. People need to address that problem. Once they do and
accept there is a problem their resistance should be significantly lowered.
This takes time. People need to be communicated with and their fears
addressed. Change is scary. But it’s a lot easier when you’ve people with
you to move the change. You can’t do it alone.

God plays his game twice
My sister in law lost her baby last year Aug 2005 to be precise… And now exactly a year later after 7 months of pregrnancy she had a prematured baby to which the doctors had given only 24 hours of survival. The baby is fighting for her survival in the ICU of a big hospital. My brother and sister in law did not deserve this at all.,neither do we …
I want all my friends out here to pray for this baby in whatever they can … I will also not be able to live lest something were to happen to this baby..
Please pray dear freinds… sometimes prayers can do what no doctors in this world can.
God, Dont play this game twice over… Dont deprive a mother of her child again. That could be the biggest sin you will commit…God

Domestic Violence Act
We have finally woken up to another law, another act which prevents and punishes men from harming, violating, hitting, etc..etc.. women… But isnt this the nth time we are reading this kind of a law.. this kind of a preventive law.. and isnt this is nth time we pick up newspapers and read stories of rape, violence against women,…
Can a law read out in courts really protect a woman? And here we are talking about not only that labourer’s wife, that truck drivers wife, or keep .. .. we are talking about the highly sofisticated class , the Page3 , the high profile executive;s wife… the live-in girlfriends of the GenX… Who is protected and against what?We can come across a vague photo of an actress, a socialite , a PR executive in a Software company come out with a broken arm, a black eye,? Where do you think that come from?
Will I , an educated , jeans clad , extremely independent woman walk into the police station every second day and file a FIR against my husband.because he abused me, hit me, insulted me.,etc,etc,. How many of us will do it even if we are subjected to any domestic violence every second minute?
What is included in this..? Will I go to a police station if my husband insults my family members, my father? The answer is a big NO..No middle, working class, with a conservative or non-conservative background come out in the open to hit it out against her husband or boyfriend until and unless she was nearly killed and that means endless suffering in those hands who were meant to love her, to protect her and her child.
We need no law to tell a man to behave like one and we need no law to tell a woman to protect herself from verbal and physical abuse.. We need restraint, we need a solid background, a strong and unbending principle.., we need to see our children learn to respect both the sexes . We are all one ,.. Why is a law building a wall between a man and a woman.. We need each other to live this life, our child needs a father and a mother..Which mother will go to file a case against her child’s father until her and her child’s life is in danger.?
We need a ethical and highly level headed society.. we need to tell that labourer that he needs to respect his woman .. and until he decides it he will keep abusing her even for not getting her a glass of water… A man or a woman need to realise and accept the fact that they cant live without each others love, appreciatyion and support.. Then only things will change..
The Government is doing a great job with law enforcement . We have put on some very good laws,, But the law should be an unwritten code on our hearts , not on paper….
I hope you will agree with some of the points I highlighted,

Daugthers letter to father
Dear Baba,
I am trying to bring in as much courage to write something as true and emotional as this to you.. After seeing you limp and struggle. Struggle to climb stairs, to hold a pen in your hands, to climb on the scooty and to get down and go numb with inherent pain due to a fatal indentation in the subrachonoid space of the spine .I could feel my heart being torn into a thousand pieces in a second .. in a microsecond..
Here was a man I as a daughter had seen walk a thousand miles, ride a bicycle with an umbrella, two small kids one on the front bar and the other on the carrier. To school, here was a father who would come with Tiffin to his daughter's school, feed her and again ride on the same bicycle another few kilometers to make infinite trips to the corporation to secure a home for his family . All I remember of you year after year after year is your walking, walking and more of walking. and for sometime I had begun to believe you had legs and will power made of steel
Baba, I know I have not been the daughter you had expected me to be. I continued to ruin your dreams fro me right from day one I ruined it all but unknowingly. It was never meant like that. I was born for a whole lot of achievements, of reaching the skies. I knew your discipline was to push me to reach the skies, to hold in my palms a successful life and a career. I knew you never wanted us to go through the pain and tabulations you did. I knew all along. But how could I have stopped destiny from taking its course. All the failures, the misgivings were destined for me babe You could help me but not after an extent You could walk with me but then Destiny and my fate had to take charge of my life And they did it not the way we all expected.
I remember the way you literally killed yourself to try to get me an admission for my engineering .. Which never happened I remember you trying o get me a good job in a bank. Which never happened I remember you wanted me to hold myself strong against all the odd things in life but thirteen long years and I am nowhere Baba just about no-where. Yet there are so many things I have really achieved ..though not in commercial value.
And I am doing this just as you did for us. I am staying back so that my child will have a secure and above average life. I am doing this just as you dropped off promotions after promotions so that it will not have a detrimental effect on our education I am staying back so that Shreyas can run.. towards a secure and successful life.
I have seen my father though the most honest, the most skilled and most efficient bank man, a thousand bank men put together just earn enough to take care of us all when he could have as well been a Armor whatever had he not thought about all of us. I have seen you sit on that desk out there when all I wanted was to see my father in one of the cabins Even at retirement you were never in that cabin, you were just another officer taking a voluntary retirement despite being the best
There were a thousand other non-deserving who rode their ways to to the top. And to their bank balances.
I am writing this to all those who can understand what it means to see a father as strong as mine, to limp his way through days and nights. I cannot bear to see him like this even a second.I have seen him just as strong and hardworking .. I did call you a ADOLF HITLER.. because of your 24X7 discipline.
Baba..To count to the already failed list was my marraige against your wishes and against everything that was considered ethical, practical All the thirteen years. that I have pushed aggressively to build myself a home, and reap all the best things of life are nothing but yours and aai's prayers and devotion to God.. I could never have done it on my own.. I have and am literally snatching all the good things from life for my home, my husband and my child even if it does not want to come my way.. Baba all that you see today is nothing short of my obsession to prove a point to this world, to prove to my parents that afterall I am not a bad daughter they thought me to be.. I am trying my best to be the best mother in the world but all at a cost.
Over a period of time you have been witness to the unpleasant issues of my marriage and my health which has not been too good.. You have unwantingly been witness to those situations for which you were never responsible.. Yes, my childhood, my asthma, my being a weak child physically and emotionally has added to my mental makeup not being strong as expected. But I should have made myself strong; I should have not let everything and anything in this world affect my life and psyche. I didn't try baba, Infact I never learnt my lessons. I ended up going through the same chakravyuvha again and again
Aai and you had to spend similar sleepless nights as you did when I used to have my innumerable asthma attacks.even after 30 years. Because you knew your daughter is not emotionally healthy, that my anger and my fits of rage were causing havocs on my son and myself and my marriage..
Why did you have to see this day Baba? At the age of 64. I was having my parents in a state of shock and tears. I thank God I didn't loose anyone of you I would have never been able to breathe another breath after that .
Baba, I am very very sorry for not being a good daughter, but I assure you I will cover up for the last thirty years. I will make up for the loss. I owe this to you, to AAI and to my God and not through any material and expensive gifting. but through being there with you in your pain every second of your forthcoming life.
Aai, please forgive your daughter for the harsh words, for the pain I made you go through year after year
Ashu.. Please believe you and mukta mean the world to your child and me my life. Please forgive me for all the sins Please help me to clean the slate and write afresh for my Baba and Aai..
Please God. My Baba loves to walk a hundred kilometers everyday
Please don't make him go through this immobility .
If you are truly there to hear us Please give back my baba his walk.
I am really sorry Baba…
Your daugther,
Anya

A little difference between Men and Women
Take this with a pinch of salt…
Men:
1. All men are extremely busy.
2. Although they are so busy, they still have time for women.
3. Although they have time for women, they don’t really care for them.
4. Although they don’t really care for them, they always have one Around.
5. Although they always have one around them, they always try their Luck with others.
6. Although they try their luck with others, they get really pissed off
If the women leaves them.
7. Although the women leaves them they still don’t learn from their
Mistakes and still try their luck with others.
Women:
1. The most important thing for a woman is financial security.
2. Although this is so important, they still go out and buy expensive
Clothes.
3. Although they always buy expensive clothes, they never have something
To wear.
4. Although they never have something to wear, they always dress
Beautifully.
5. Although they always dress beautifully, their clothes are always just
“An old rag”.
6. Although their clothes are always “just an old rag”, they still
Expect you to compliment them.
7. Although they expect you to compliment them, when you do, they don’t
Believe you
