Fibre2fashion offers smart sourcing platform for buyers http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/13/fibre2fashion-offers-smart-sourcing-platform-for-buyers/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/13/fibre2fashion-offers-smart-sourcing-platform-for-buyers/#comments Mon, 13 May 2013 05:12:06 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/13/fibre2fashion-offers-smart-sourcing-platform-for-buyers/

To bridge the gap between buyers and suppliers of textiles, fibre2fashion the number-1 global B2B textile, apparel and fashion portal has introduced an online service of strategic sourcing.  This will make sourcing of textiles like fibres, yarns, fabrics, accessories, etc a lot more easier.

Sourcing from a right supplier who can deliver right product with right material, design & price at right time becomes difficult at times. Again with changing times, competition and ever-changing fashion trends, it becomes all the more essential to have suppliers who can deliver end-products to the satisfaction of the buyer.

Similarly suppliers too find it difficult to comply with the requirements of large brands and retailers to register as approved vendors, resulting in to loss to both. Buyer may miss a good supplier and a supplier may loose an opportunity to service a valuable buyer.

To remove this disconnect, fibre2fashion now offers ‘Explore 3S OPTIONS’ or to put in simply ‘Smart, Secure and Strategic Sourcing’ through an international platform of global suppliers from the entire value chain of textiles & apparels.

The purpose behind offering this platform is to smoothen the sourcing process & to assist buyers to be proactive rather than reactive and take informed business decisions. Fibre2fashion wishes to turn intelligence into wisdom in to the procurement system through this new initiative.

CORE BENEFITS:
1 Define cost-saving targets, increased customer satisfaction and bring flexibility in sourcing..
2 Build a better pipeline of vendors.
3 Lower your procurement cost.
4 Render all services under one roof.

Spanish apparel retailer stitches plans to enter India http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/06/spanish-apparel-retailer-stitches-plans-to-enter-india/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/06/spanish-apparel-retailer-stitches-plans-to-enter-india/#comments Mon, 06 May 2013 13:54:18 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/06/spanish-apparel-retailer-stitches-plans-to-enter-india/

Several global players in the fashion and apparel retail sector, including Tesco, IKEA, Walmart and Hennes & Mauritz group (H&M), are planning to expand their business to India through the foreign direct investment route.

Recently, Spain-based Inditex, one of the world’s largest apparel retailers, has filed an application to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to open Massimo Dutti stores across India through a joint venture with Tata group.

“We have filed an application to develop Massimo Dutti stores in India through a joint venture with Tata group,” the spokesperson of Inditex told fibre2fashion.

Earlier in 2011, the apparel retailer had submitted an application to enter the Indian market with Massimo Dutti, through a joint venture with Tata Group, wherein Inditex will hold 51 percent stake. However, the proposal was rejected by the FIPB without citing any reason.

Inditex has more than 6,000 stores in 86 markets worldwide and owns brands like Zara, Pull&Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home and Uterqüe.

Massimo Dutti offers a wide variety of collections, ranging from sophisticated high-end fashion to easygoing casual wear. Its 630 stores in 60 countries share a universal design which transcends national borders to connect with today’s men and women, who are independent, urban and cosmopolitan.

Trent Limited is an India-based company engaged in the retailing business. The company operates in two business segments: retailing and services related to retailing, distribution, consultancy services.

Clothing that turns transparent when a person lies http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/01/clothing-that-turns-transparent-when-a-person-lies/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/01/clothing-that-turns-transparent-when-a-person-lies/#comments Wed, 01 May 2013 13:33:20 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/05/01/clothing-that-turns-transparent-when-a-person-lies/

Smart textiles have integrated technology into the world of fashion with the introduction of soft circuit incorporated garments that respond to the gesture and movement of the wearer in order to create music, to maintain the health of the wearer, purify the urban air pollution and even to protect the wearer from the thermal imaging surveillance which is used by unmanned aerial vehicles.

The latest development in the world of wearable technology is the high-tech garment collection ‘Intimacy White’ and ‘Intimacy Black’ introduced by the Dutch firm Studio Roosegaarde – a social design lab which creates interactive designs that explore the dynamic relation between space, people and technology.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, creative director of Studio Roosegaarde, Mr. Daan Roosegaarde said, “The clothing is made out of opaque smart e-foils that become increasingly transparent when the wearer lies and it functions as a sort of lie detector.”

“In response to the heart beat of the wearer, the apparel becomes more or less transparent,” he informs.

Talking about the interactions at play between body, technology and fashion in the garments, he says, “Nowadays, we see art as a merger between humans, technology and with this project in fashion, we like to see this merge as ‘techno-poetry’.”

According to him, the technology is quite essential in designing wearable clothing since the properties of the material determine a great part of the final design. “We let these technical limitations work in our advantage and search for benefits within this limit,” he adds.

“For us it was a logical step to create a dress from opaque smart e-foil. We first found the foil at the manufacturer and then we teamed up with two fashion designers. This whole process went very natural for us and we have created a statement in fashion,” he concludes.

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb graces final day of Fashion Forward http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/30/cfda-ceo-steven-kolb-graces-final-day-of-fashion-forward/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/30/cfda-ceo-steven-kolb-graces-final-day-of-fashion-forward/#comments Tue, 30 Apr 2013 10:38:16 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/30/cfda-ceo-steven-kolb-graces-final-day-of-fashion-forward/
With the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) CEO Steven Kolb in attendance and some spectacular catwalk presentations by Emirati and Indian designers, the latest edition of Dubai’s inaugural bi-annual fashion event Fashion Forward (FFWD) came to an end.

The Emerging Talent segment winners Amalie Beljafla and Soraya Al Ali from the label Tresors Sauvages kicked off the final day with their ready-to-wear collections. Inspired by the endangered flamingos of the UAE, the London-based Emirati designers featured several embroidered patterns and bold prints of the majestic bird on their clothes.

Lebanese fashion talent Dina JSR showcased an architecture-inspired collection made using a mix of fabrics like crepe, lace, leather and satin. Titled as Architectural Precision, the ensembles were skilfully interlocked with several strips and straps to create subtle layers.

Entrepreneur-cum-fashion designer Zayan Gandour presented her first-ever catwalk-show at the event. Infused with a generous dose of metallic, the line included tulle skirts, poufy shouldered brocade dresses and T-shirts featuring slogans like ‘Bringing Satwa Back’ and ‘Satwa Rocks’.

Indian designer Ayesha Depala brought the curtain down with her glamorous feminine line. Based on a conservative palette of nudes, pastels and whites, the sophisticatedly chic yet practical range included ruffled off-shoulder tops, leather trousers, capes and long and short dresses in soft sensuous silhouettes.

Macy’s to host ‘Madonna’s Fashion Evolution’ pop-up event http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/24/macys-to-host-madonnas-fashion-evolution-pop-up-event/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/24/macys-to-host-madonnas-fashion-evolution-pop-up-event/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2013 05:34:08 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/24/macys-to-host-madonnas-fashion-evolution-pop-up-event/ Madonna, Material Girl and Macy’s are offering consumers the ultimate insider experience with the unveiling of a thrilling one day pop-up fashion exhibit, “Madonna’s Fashion Evolution” at Macy’s in Century City, California.

On Thursday, April 25th, from 6-8pm, several of Madonna’s most iconic fashion items including her infamous Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra corset from her Blonde Ambition Tour, her Reinvention Tour ensemble by Christian Lacroix , her “Like A Virgin” wedding dress, and other legendary pieces will be on display for fans to get a firsthand view of the evolution of Madonna’s fashion.

The exhibit will take place surrounded by the hugely successful fashion forward Material Girl line that Madonna created exclusively for Macy’s with her daughter, Lola.

Madonna personally handpicked eight of her favorite costumes from a vast archive of tour costumes and her personal collection for the one day pop-up exhibition. Madonna and the Material Girl team went to great efforts to gather these iconic pieces for the exhibition, which marks the first time these items have been displayed together for the public to view.

The cone bustiers were flown in from a Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit in Amsterdam, her “Like A Virgin” wedding dress is on loan from the legendary Hard Rock, while the remaining items are from Madonna’s personal archives.

“The pop-up exhibit at Macy’s perfectly exemplifies the inspiration and spirit of the Material Girl line and will give my fans a great opportunity to see the evolution of my style over the years,” commented Madonna.

Arianne Phillips, Madonna’s longtime collaborator, styled and helped to curate the exhibit. About the “Like A Virgin” wedding dress Madonna wore to the MTV VMA’s in 1984, Phillips commented, “This was one of the most shocking, liberating and influential moments in pop culture/fashion history.” “Fashion has never been the same. Bold and unforgiving, humorous and shocking, we can depend on Madonna to challenge us to rethink fashion. Madonna has taken sacred garments like the wedding dress and religious embellishments, and re-contextualized them,” she added.

“It’s a magical thing to bring all these iconic pieces together in one place,” said Dari Marder chief marketing officer at Iconix Brand Group, Inc. “This will show customers how influential Madonna has been to fashion and how that influences Material Girl today,” she added.

“We are so thrilled to bring this unique experience exclusively to Macy’s customers,” said Martine Reardon, Macy’s chief marketing officer. “An homage to Madonna’s revolutionary style and influence on our Material Girl collection, ‘Madonna’s Fashion Evolution’ pop-up exhibit offers a rare opportunity to see some of her most iconic looks curated together in a never-before-seen display.”

Material Girl is a fast-fashion junior collection inspired and designed in collaboration with Madonna and her daughter Lola. Material Girl launched in 2010 exclusively at Macy’s in the United States.

Tecnalia designs smart textile that adopt different shapes http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/22/tecnalia-designs-smart-textile-that-adopt-different-shapes/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/22/tecnalia-designs-smart-textile-that-adopt-different-shapes/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2013 11:43:04 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/22/tecnalia-designs-smart-textile-that-adopt-different-shapes/

The Centre for Applied Research Tecnalia Research & Innovation has through its FIK initiative designed Varstiff, a smart textile material that can adopt different shapes; when vacuum is applied to it, it turns rigid once again and achieves hardness equivalent to that of a conventional plastic. The material reverts to its flexible state once the vacuum is released. The first product Varstiff will be used for will be an emergency immobiliser for accident victims.

Thanks to the encouragement and collaboration of Janus Development, this product has been selected by the Botín Foundation as one of the three award-winning projects in the first edition of its programme “Mind the Gap”. To support its launch onto the market a new technology-based enterprise will be set up to operate in the healthcare sector initially, but with plans to expand its activity to other sectors like the automotive or leisure sectors.

The new material designed by Tecnalia can be adapted to any part of the body and in any situation; it can be fitted in its soft, malleable state so that afterwards when vacuum is applied to it, it becomes as stiff as plaster of Paris. This makes it possible in the event of an accident to immediately immobilise parts of the victim’s body that are difficult to access without moving it, like the neck, back or thorax.

The funding of 350,000 euros over two years provided by the Botín Foundation through its “Mind the Gap” programme will enable the development of the first two products to be completed: an immobiliser for emergencies, and a position fixator to improve the life quality of people who have to use wheel chairs. The new enterprise is expected to be up and running by the end of 2013 and is expected to launch its first product onto the market early in 2014. Its headquarters will be located in the Basque Country and it is estimated that it will achieve an accumulated turnover of 2 million euros during the first four years it is operating.

OTHER SOLUTIONS

This revolutionary material also offers solutions in other spheres of healthcare, like orthopaedics, where it has advantages over ordinary solutions that use elastic straps that are closed using Velcro, or inflatable cushions. These solutions apply pressure and therefore exert force on the skin; and apart from lacking the necessary stiffness, they reduce comfort.

The automotive sector, leisure and sports are other fields in which this material can have new uses to ensure the safety and comfort of its users. In the automotive sector this material will contribute greater comfort and personalisation of different items, like seats that can be adjusted to each person, systems for absorbing energy in doors, or flexible luggage racks. In the sphere of sports, it could lead to flexible items for camping like chairs, tables, mats, etc. Likewise, this material could have a pioneering role in the development of high-performance protection textiles, like for example, clothing for extreme sports or for security personnel.

Students, scientists explain neuroscience through fashion http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/13/students-scientists-explain-neuroscience-through-fashion/ http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/13/students-scientists-explain-neuroscience-through-fashion/#comments Sat, 13 Apr 2013 09:02:12 +0000 http://blogs.rediff.com/apparelindustry/2013/04/13/students-scientists-explain-neuroscience-through-fashion/

Fashion designing students from Winchester School of Art - University of Southampton, UK along with biological scientists from the Southampton, have created apparels explaining neuroscience through fashion.

Through a research work of three years on mental disorders, such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Asperger’s Syndrome, Epilepsy and schizophrenia, the second-year fashion design and knitwear students prepared six apparels which aim at addressing the stigma and misconception surrounding mental health.

The project ‘Changing Minds’ provides a stimulating, engaging and creative ways to engage in conversations about mental health issues.

In a conversation with fibre2fashion, programme leader in Fashion and Textile Design at Winchester School of Art, Cecilia Langemar says, “The ‘Changing Minds’ project expand the perception and understanding of the students about what fashion design can be and the changes one can achieve as a designer when he or she  joins design and a particular cause.”

Professor of Neuroscience at University of Southampton, Lindy Holden-Dye says: “I am delighted the initiative is introducing biological science to new audiences.  It is also a great example of multidisciplinary research, which draws together researchers from across the University, to make a significant contribution towards understanding and responding to some of society’s major challenges.”

The dress on a theme of Asperger’s Syndrome was designed by Dayze Steward who researched the complex connections in the brain during regular thought processes of someone with this syndrome. Through her designs, she illustrates that within these processes the mind would over think things and something simple would then be twisted into something elaborate.

Stephanie Simmons, the designer who worked on Epilepsy, says, “”I wanted to communicate a message to raise awareness of how epilepsy can drastically affect a person’s day to day life. My garment conveys not just the physical strains it causes them but translates how their emotions are affected.”

According to Dr. Shmma Quraishe, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University, people are fascinated by the garments and want to find out more about their connections with neuroscience and the research. “It is also a great opportunity to remove the stigma associated with mental illness,” he adds.
