Hollywood Costume to tell the story of costume design

Hollywood Costume (20 October 2012 – 27 January 2013), The Victoria and Albert Museum’s (V&A) major autumn exhibition, will gather together over one hundred of the most iconic costumes designed for unforgettable cinema characters over a century of film-making.

For the first time, Hollywood Costume will unite classics from the Golden Age including Dorothy’s blue and white gingham pinafore dress designed by Adrian for The Wizard of Oz (1939), Scarlett O’Hara’s green ‘curtain’ dress designed by Walter Plunkett for Gone with the Wind (1939) and the ‘little black dress’ designed by Hubert De Givenchy for Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), with the latest Hollywood releases including Consolata Boyle’s costumes for Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady (2011).

Hollywood Costume will explore the central role of costume design – from the glamorous to the very subtle – as an essential tool of cinema storytelling. It will illuminate the costume designer’s creative process from script to screen and reveal the collaborative dialogue that leads to the invention of authentic people in the story.

The exhibition will also examine the changing social and technological context in which costume designers have worked over the last century.

The exhibition is a three-gallery journey from early Charlie Chaplin silent pictures to the motion capture costume design for Avatar (Deborah L. Scott, Mayes C. Rubeo, 2010) and John Carter (Mayes C. Rubeo, 2012).

From Joan Crawford’s blue gingham waitress uniform in Mildred Pierce, (Milo Anderson, 1945) to the sensational bugle-beaded ruby gown she wore in The Bride Wore Red, (Adrian, 1937), these costumes are united by their one purpose of serving the story.

Using montages, film clips and projections, the clothes will be placed in their original context, alongside interviews with key Hollywood costume designers, directors and actors talking about the role costume plays in creating a character.

Mandali Mendrilla dedicates ‘Slave2Love’ to late husband

Internationally distinguished haute couture fashion designers Mandali Mendrilla is dedicating her newest atelier collection “Slave2Love” (S2L) to her husband who died in a car accident in January.

Croatian born New York (USA) based stylist, designer and artist Mandali, who has several award winning collections to her credit, was working on S2L when an auto accident took the life of her husband Elisha Nitai Drury, 31; who was an artist, visionary, director of the Krishna Kitchen and founder of non-profit Food for Life Experience.

Mandali says that S2L is an “expression of the fragile nature of the human form versus the eternality of indwelling spirit”. “Inspired by Chuang Tzi’s butterfly metempsychosis and the eternal wisdom of the ancient scripture Bhagavad-Gita, the fluttering organic hand painted cloth expresses a longing for attainment of undying worlds within”, she adds about S2L.

This new collection, which was originally scheduled to be premiered at the Fall/Winter 2012 FashionWeek, was instead silently launched on her website.

Meanwhile, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA), applauded Mandali for exploring ancient Hindu civilizations and reinventing ancient Indian dressing codes and artistic traditions for her collections and getting inspiration from Sanskrit epics. Creating clothing lines appeared to be a spiritual exercise for her, Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, added.

New Look launches modern & edgy jumpsuits

If you are looking for summer eveningwear that’s on-trend, modern and edgy, New Look suggests jumpsuits. This vintage-style all in ones are throwbacks to the glamorous days of disco in the mid to late seventies.

Reams of flowing fabrics, chiffon, jersey and viscose combined with deep, bold colours and plenty of metallic detailing and accessories defined the look of the disco era, with jumpsuits at its epicentre. Fast-forward to summer 2012 and jumpsuits are back looking more glamorous and cosmopolitan than ever. Whatever trend you’re looking to tap into this summer, New Look has the jumpsuit to match.

If you want to make the ultimate style statement, New Look suggests Firetrap’s Bini Wide Leg Jumpsuit, at £79.99. This Firetrap jumpsuit really stands out because of its midnight blue colour, reflective, silky material, plunging v-neckline and wide, pleated legs. It frames and enhances your natural curves thanks to the nipped in waist and well-cut shoulders.

In terms of styling, New Look suggest some metallic jewellery, such as a statement cascade or waterfall style necklace, platform courts or stilettos and an embellished clutch bag. Big seventies hair would finish off the look nicely.

The lady in red always gets what she wants and you will too if you slip into Miss Sixty’s Red Sunshine Jumpsuit available at New Look for £113.99. The bright, bold red hue is arresting and demands attention for all the right reasons.

The seventies styling complete with wide, flared legs, wide and deep v-neckline and loose, flared sleeves to the elbow is glamorous and utterly sexy and the high, belted waist adds shape and definition. This jumpsuit really does speak for itself and New Look advises you to keep accessories to a minimum. Add some black strappy sandals or peep-toe wedges and a leopard print mini clutch.

Feeling USA Lingerie launches new Faux leather line

Our customers have asked for an alternative to leather. They love the look of leather, but shy away from wearing it. In recent years more and more women don’t want to wear genuine fur or leather for ethical reasons. Our animal friendly material gives women a way to show support for animal rights. Therefore the new Faux leather collection offers the perfect substitute. All garments are all lined in luxurious red satin to provide a comfortable fit. Affordable garments that look and feel expensive.

Franz Schlienger the owner of Feeling USA lingerie states that there is a demand for these garment. Long gone are the times that only bikers are wearing leather. Today women like to wear edgy and fashion forward outfits to the club, concerts. and other similar events. Clothing that makes a statement. Long pants, Capri pants, skirts and shorts that can be all matched with a corset top or bra. For each corset and bra top our customers will be able to choose the coordinating skirt, shorts or long pants.

Faux leather is essentially fake leather, Instead of being made of animal skins, these fabrics are made of 65% PVC, 30% Polyester, 5% Polyethylene, and treated to replicate the look of leather and some of its common attributes. There are different names for faux leather, and these include pleather and leatherette.

Feeling USA Lingerie is convinced that customers will fall in love with the new Kitten faux leather collection.
