New Delhi: Members of the 15th Lok Sabha may not be too bothered about
salary hikes for themselves. Not with as many as 300 crorepatis getting
the people's mandate this time '" up 95% from 154 in the last Lok Sabha.

According to assets declared before the Election Commission, the
wealthiest MP in the new House is Namma Nageswara Rao of TDP, elected
from Khammam in Andhra Pradesh. He is worth Rs 173 crore. Rao is
followed by Congress's Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra with assets of Rs
131 crore.

Others at the top of the crorepati club are L Rajagopal (Congress),
Praful Patel (NCP), Supriya Sule (NCP), Rajkumari Ratna Singh of
Pratapgarh (Congress) and Andhra CM Y S R Reddy's son Y S Rajamohan
Reddy.

The list of crorepatis was compiled by National Election Watch (NEW), a
nationwide body comprising more than 1,200 NGOs and other citizen led
organizations working on electoral reforms.

The maximum number of crorepatis were found to be from Congress (137),
followed by BJP (58), SP (14) and BSP (13). These parties are followed
by DMK and Shiv Sena.

Interestingly, JD(U) was found to have the seventh biggest group of
crorepatis in the House, ahead of 'richer' parties like NCP, BJD and
TDP.

Amongst states, maximum crorepatis are from UP (52), followed by
Maharastra (37), Andhra Pradesh (31) and Karnataka (25), Bihar (17),
Tamil Nadu (17) and MP (15). Gujarat, at number 10, has sent 12
crorepatis to the new House this time '" less than the number from
Punjab and Rajasthan.

Anil Bairwal, coordinator, NEW, said, ''The misuse of monetary
incentives to buy votes has increased sharply since the last elections
and continues to be a source of threat to real democracy.''

Bairwal doubts that development would be the priority of the new MPs
who have spent huge sums to get themselves elected. ''They are more
likely to focus on recovering the funds they spent and on giving
favours to those who supported their campaigns,'' he added.

An excellent extract from rediff ,please SHARE this with all TEENS AND THEIR Parents

Date rape: ‘You can’t be too careful’ by Insiyah Vahanvaty

Back in 2003, we were horrified when a young girl in Goa [Images] was
drugged and gang-raped by her friends after she smoked a ‘cigarette’
they offered her.

In 2007, headlines carried the tragic tale of a British tourist who was
drugged and sexually assaulted by a friend in her hotel room in Delhi
[Images].

And last week, we recoiled in horror when the media carried a story of
how a 23-year-old American girl, a student at the Tata Institute of
Social Sciences, TISS, in Trombay, was drugged and raped by six male
friends.

The common factor in all three stories? The shocking fact that all the
above victims were betrayed and violated by those they knew and trusted
– their friends.

Much as we may like to believe that date rape is a curse of the Western
world, we have to open our eyes to the fact that the crime is much
closer to home than we realise. Instances of date rape are steadily
rising in India — so much so that most of us know someone who has got
into a pickle with people she knew and trusted.

The free availability of sedatives and party drugs over the counter
have led to an enormous amount of misuse and numerous girls wake up the
morning after with no recollection of how they spent the night.

These drugs are colourless, odourless and tasteless, so spiking
someone’s drink with them is extremely easy. They are available at
pharmacies even without a doctor’s prescription. The victim of a date
rape drug might experience disorientation, memory loss and time-space
confusion, which makes it very easy to rape her.

Says 30-year-old Delhiite Shaurya Roy, “I remember this one instance a
few years ago, at a party I attended. It was at a farmhouse and I
noticed that one of the bedrooms in the house was locked. I thought
there might be a couple inside, so I left. However, later I was told
that a friend of mine was drunk and had been taken in there by a guy
she barely knew. We rushed inside and found her sprawled on the bed,
naked. After kicking the guy out, we dressed her and took her to the
doctor, where she regained consciousness. She chose not to report the
incident or press charges.”

Such shocking events are not as isolated as we may be tempted to
believe. Simar Suri, a 24-year-old law graduate who lives in Mumbai
[Images], has the following tale to tell: “When I was in law school, a
friend of mine went out drinking with her buddies. Though she didn’t
have too many drinks, she says she got really drunk and blacked out.
She doesn’t remember anything that happened after that. The next
morning she found herself in her bed, undressed. We don’t know what was
in her drink, but she slept for two whole days after that.”

Explains Simar, “Whenever I go out drinking, I make sure I get my own
drinks, and that bottles of beer are opened at the table itself. I also
keep my guard up with boys I don’t know too well — if they seem pushy,
warning bells start sounding in my head. I also limit myself to one
drink when out with people I’ve met recently. And no matter who I’m
going with, I make sure a friend or family member knows where I am.
After all, it can happen to anyone, anytime. As women, we have to be on
our guard, because it just takes one slip-up to ruin your life.”

Shaurya agrees. “It’s a very sorry thing that we’re seeing these days.
If it were left to me, all perpetrators of this crime would find
themselves either behind bars, or serving time in a mental asylum. It’s
sick! Women need to take care of themselves — to watch how much they
are drinking, make sure they are in an environment where they can call
for help if required and not leave their drinks or food unattended.”

Being drugged is not the only thing you need to be careful of. Date
rape can take place even when you’re completely in your senses, in
broad daylight.

If you don’t know them very well, beware of men who suggest taking you
home when nobody is around, dates in isolated places, long drives alone
etc.

Visiting an isolated place, where no help is readily available puts you
in a vunerable position that a potentail rapist could take advantage of.

Unfortunately, the rising occurrence of date rapes has its backlash on
a woman’s liberty itself. She can’t let her guard down, even when
hanging out with friends, feels the need to protect herself at all
times and might curb her own freedom in the interest of her safety.
Hostels are tightening security and making more strict their guidelines
for students, parents are regulating their daughters’ whereabouts more
vigilantly, and women themselves are frightened enough to be wary at
all times, even when surrounded by friends.

Asks 25-year-old Mumbaiite Sharayna Desouza, “Who can we trust? These
incidents have us looking at everyone with suspicion. It’s not fair
that we have to constantly feel threatened. You can’t be too careful –
I’ve started taking precautions to protect myself. For instance, I try
to go out in a group as much as possible, always finish my drink before
going to the loo, never go drinking on a first date, and try not to
attract unnecessary attention. In this situation, the only person who
can protect yourself is you.”

To help prevent yourself from becoming a victim of sexual abuse at the
hands of someone you know, here’s a checklist of dos and don’ts to
adher to the next time you’re out to have a good time with friends:

# DoS: Meet male friends you don’t know very well in public places, where help is readily available.

# Make sure your friends and family know where you’re going and with whom.

# Keep your guard up, especially with people you don’t know too well.

# Try to have a trusted friend go out with you.

# Make sure you know how you’re getting home.

# Go out in a group as much as possible — there’s safety in numbers.

# Watch your drink at all times when you go partying.

# Have the waiter open bottles of alcohol at the table.

# Control how much you drink.

# Stick to one drink if you’re with people you don’t know very well.

# Drink lots of water and eat while you drink to make sure you don’t get drunk.

Don’tS:

# Go on dates to isolated places, long drives or put yourself in
situations that make you vulnerable, where getting help would be
difficult.

# Ignore warning signs, like men who don’t take no for an answer, or men who seem eager to get you drunk.

# Go alone to house parties.

# Attract unnecessary attention.

# Let someone you don’t know very well drive you home.

# Ask someone else to get you a drink.

# Leave your drink unattended.

# Drink too much, or use substances that could intoxicate you.

# Think it can’t happen to you!

Date Rape drug Every Teen should know and protect

Safety tips for single women-Dr Diwan Rahul Nanda

How’s this for frightening statistics: In India, a woman is molested
every 26 minutes. A woman is raped every 34 minutes. There’s one being
sexually harassed every 42 minutes, another being kidnapped every 43
minutes. One woman is killed every 93 minutes. And these are just the
reported cases!

Unfortunately, ignoring personal safety and security is a big mistake most women make.

Incorporating these safety tips should help.Safety at home

Most people actually make it easy for burglars to work, but you can
reduce the chance of becoming a target by using a little extra care and
thought about the security of your home, apartment and neighbourhood.

~ Get new locks or have the tumblers reset when you move into a
previously occupied dwelling. A locksmith should be able to do this for
you.

~ Don’t hide a key outside the door, under mats, flowerpots or under
rocks. If you want extra keys nearby, leave one with a trusted
neighbour.

~ Make sure you have good, safe locks on all doors. Use auxiliary dead
bolt locks on all exterior doors and make sure they are installed
properly. Lock all doors when you go out, even if it’s for just a
minute!

~ Install an alarm that can detect entry or smoke.

~ Be cautious when strangers enter your home. Use a peephole or look
through a window to check. If you must talk to a stranger, never open
the door wide. If you have a security chain attached, only open as far
as it will allow.

~ Report broken streetlights in your neighbourhood. Well-lit areas discourage burglars.

~ Do not leave your house and car keys together with attendants at
public parking lots. Your house key can be quickly duplicated and your
address obtained from your plate number.

~ Don’t give information to strangers over the telephone. On wrong
number calls, don’t give the caller your number. Report continued wrong
calls to the telephone company.

~ Don’t give your computer password or other pertinent information to others.

~ If possible, use metal grillwork on entrance doors.

~ Report any strangers loitering in your neighbourhood or people asking vague questions about your neighbours.

~ Store ladders inside. If you can’t, lock them up securely somewhere else. Suggest your neighbours follow this rule as well.

~ Use lights effectively, leave several on in different areas of the house when you go out.

~ A safe inexpensive window lock can also be made.

~ Leave a radio playing quietly when you go out to give the impression that someone is at home.

~ Vary your routine. If you follow the same routine week in and week out, a would-be burglar could watch your movements.

~ If your phone is attached to an answering machine, make sure your
message does not give the impression to a caller that you are not at
home. Make sure your phone does not continue to ring and ring, giving
an indication that you are not at home.

~ Remove your name and address from any magazines or papers before discarding them.

~ Shred all papers that contain pertinent information about you and members of your family.

~ Single women should never place their full name in a mailbox — your
first and middle initial may be used, not ‘Miss,’ ‘Ms’ or ‘Mrs’.

~ Keep few valuables in your apartment.

~ Keep your mailbox empty. If you are away, arrange with a neighbour or building manager to have all mail taken out.

~ Check references of maids, cleaning women or anyone else who may have
to work inside your apartment while you are away from it.

~ A dog can often prevent a burglary. Place a ‘Beware of dog’ sign in your windows.

If you don’t have a dog, purchase a heavy-duty dog chain, a large dog
collar and dog dish. Place all three items in plain sight where a
would-be burglar can see them.

In your car and parking lots

~ Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating
or working and just sit working on their chequebooks or making a list,
etc. Do not do this!

~ Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. Check under the car as well.

~ While driving alone, lock yourself in. Do not give lifts.

~ Better have your tank full during the day. Never even think of
stopping at a gas station alone at night or on the outskirts of the
city.

~ If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the
passenger door. You could be attacked/ pulled into the van when you are
attempting to get into your cars.

~ Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the
passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest to your
car, you may want to walk back and get a colleague/ guard/ policeman to
walk you back out.

~ Keep a pencil and paper in your car. If you see a prowling car in
your neighbourhood, take down the license number. Ask your children to
be alert for suspicious vehicles.

~ Become familiar with your neighbours’ cars. Any car that does not
belong in your neighbourhood should be considered a possible suspect.

Better safe than sorry

~ Always take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone.

~ Do not get into an elevator if there is someone it in with whom you are not comfortable.

~ Do not stand in the corners of the elevator, be near the front by the doors, ready to get off.

~ Women are always very sympathetic. Do not help a handicapped man or
someone asking for an address on a lonely street. It sounds rude, but
you never know.

~ Continuous eve-teasing by locals should be notified to the police.

~ If stalked, walk to the local police station. Change direction of walking and never enter a lonely area.

~ Always keep your distance when walking past strangers on the street or in dark areas.

~ Get a cell phone. Keep it charged.

~ If you are walking alone in the dark or in a lonely area, and you
find someone stalking you, scream ‘fire’ and not ‘help’. People don’t
want to get involved when people yell ‘help’ but ‘fire’ draws attention
because people are nosy. Then, run!

~ Offending phone calls from an ex-boyfriend should be clearly avoided.
Be polite and firm. If he doesn’t stop, report it to the police.

~ Avoid travelling by train after normal working hours.

At social events

~ Young women in dating situations should never leave drinks
unattended. A ‘date rape’ drug can be easily slipped into a glass. When
returning from the dance floor or restroom, get a new drink from the
bartender.

~ When making plans to go out for the first time, consider meet your
date at a public place. Also, let someone know whom you are meeting and
where you are going.

~ While dating online, do not, under any circumstance, reveal any
personally identifiable information in your profile, personal ads, or
private e-mails. Use only the communication tools provided by your
dating service or chat rooms.

Use your judgement here.

When you e-mail in private, you may want to consider using an anonymous e-mail account at a free site.

Take your time to establish communication and move at your own pace.

Be careful with your email signatures. They sometimes include phone numbers and addresses.

~ Remember, you are in control. No one should pressurise you into
revealing anything about yourself that you want to keep private. Anyone
who does is not respecting your boundaries and is probably not worth
contacting any further.

While exercising outdoors

~ The most important thing you can do is stay in well-travelled residential areas. Avoid isolated areas.

~ Never wear headphones while walking or jogging outside. It not only
increases the likelihood that you will not hear someone approach from
behind, but doing so sends a clear message to the outside world that
you are not attuned to your surroundings and hence vulnerable.

~ Always assume hostile intent from strangers and keep your distance.
Remember, many attacks are preceded by one of these three questions:
‘May I use your phone?’, ‘What time is it?’ and ‘Do you know how to get
to…?’

Other things to do

~ The eyes are the most vulnerable part of the body. Poke the attacked
there and you have possibly your only window of opportunity to escape.

~ Aim for the groin area. A hard kick or a knee jammed into your
attacker’s groin will temporarily leave him unable to attack you.

~ The neck is also a vulnerable spot, but have you know where to grip and you have the strength to cut off his breath.

~ The last place is the knees. Everyone’s knees are vulnerable and a swift kick here will get anyone down.

~ Take a self-defence course and carry pepper spray if you wish, but
don’t let either give you a false sense of security. Better to avoid
areas where an attack can take place.

~ Don’t depend on a dog to protect you all the time. If you are single
and have a dog, let it be trained professionally to defend you.

~ If someone points a gun at you and demands that you get in a car,
don’t! Few criminals can shoot accurately at a moving target, so you
are less likely to be injured while running away.

~ Finally, remember: Assuming that none of this will ever happen to you
is ridiculous. No one expects it, but we must be aware and prepared.

An Indian Writes …..

Dear Friends,

I write this mail with sincere respect to
one and all but the content to follow may not suit your taste but I
will pen my view with your permission, I wanted our friends to start a
movement to Support ACB and the tremendous work they have done in the
last few years.Since there has been no movement on that front , I began
to ponder on the lack of support to this cause and this made me reflect
on few questions, which are …

1. Why do people who follow rules are the major sufferers?

2.
90% of the Born Again Tigers[ Senior Citizens worked in Central /Govt]
become wild tigers after retirement and talk of Truth, Rules, etc which
they were passive followers or never followed during their work
tenure. They accepted corruption as a way of life and made their
children insensitive to the same and 90% conducted the weddings of
their children either by giving dowry or taking dowry either of which
is a CRIME under law.Don’t we still do it ? Why double standards?

3.
90% of us run for power and respect people in power and would like to
associate ourselves with people in power? Yes or now - your conscience
is the best judge ?

4. Rules are for others not for my family ,
Support for frauds/fraudsters is ever increasing best example is people
belonging to RAJU community have received a great ‘dole’ from SATYAM
and hence people belonging to his community conduct a yagam to save him
from the crisis and they do not call it not a fraud. Honesty is not
important,Caste is ?

5. The flowchart logic behind this
corruption is CASTE AND THE DOWRY System which 90% of us encourage it
and any corrupt official who has the power wants to secure his future
by amassing wealth disproportionate to his income and leading the show
are the Central and the state Govt employees not to mention the Top
level politicians , Bureaucrats[ the white elephants of this country]=
one white elephant belonging to A.P.Govt spends Rs 7.00 lakhs to
renovate his bathroom from the state exchequer.Great service to the
nation in cleaning his bathroom he should clean his mind or his parents
for producing a retard ?

6. There is 1.5. TRILLION USD $ in
Swiss Banks recorded as India deposits deposited by the various
bureaucrats, politicians ,govt employees, etc - Is this not the money of
the COMMON MAN OF INDIA, why is the PARLIAMENT silent when the banks
are ready to declare the info and hush up the swiss bankers because
Madame Sonia , L.K.ADvani are having accounts too and not to mention
here there are accounts of many “MUTTS” also .Can we raise one voice as
an INDIAN and let the entire money be brought to Indian Accounts?

7.
As per the protocol of Indian law- Sam Manekshaw - A Great Soldier is
placed in level 4 and above him are Brajesh Mishra and Vikas kapoor -
Do these jokers deserve to be ahead of Sam Manekshaw or Major Somnath
Sharma? [ For those who have joined late , He was the first to receive
the Param Vir Chakra]

8. Mumbaikars - very resilient - BULL SHIT
; there were reports that there was satta going when Taj was burning
and I would like to ask them - Don’t tell me that Sharad
Pawar,Deshmukh, Rane, Praful Patel,Thackeray do not know where Dawood
Ibrahim’s properties are ? They did not have the power to raze it to
the ground and they did not help dawood grow and become a menace to the
world and all the above are holding ,held important and critical posts
in the respective assemblies and now Sharad Pawar is being projected as
next P.M by another crook called Amar singh who insists on NSG
protection. What more disastrous can be for the nation ruled by these
nincompoops ? If Mumbaikars are really patriotic they should demolish
Dawood’s properties instantly ? Send a strong message to the
TALIBANPAKISTAN, Where was the leader of Marathi Manoos Raj Thackeray
when Taj was on fire and Major Nair died and this Major is an Indian [
sadly]?

9. KCR says he is going to ban all educational
Institutions run by Andhra People , I would like to say to that Joker
that - He should not only ban them , ban all the lecturers and also
andhra students from studying here , lets see how he will run
telangana? with kallu compound and wine shops in future huh?

Chiranjeevi
- less said about him is better as its an open note that he has not
helped a single soul during his film career and his pathetic approach
towards his daughter’s wedding was evident for all to judge and he
wants to run the state? The elder brother supports prohibition and his
yuva rajyam bro is drinking kallu openly and supports it ,..less said
tis better?

Naidu and Devendar goud the men who looted the
entire real estate during their tenure and have unaccountable wealth in
Singapore, Bangkok, Leichestein,Cayman Island, Davos , The man who
jumped parties after election, ditched his Father in Law,compromises
his stand on T State just for the sake of power and is doling out
freebies as if its his father’s property[May be his Father in Law has
given A.P. as part of dowry to him and his family members]

YSR
- the nero who ruled A.P. and the tughlaq[ Sorry to insult tughlaq,he
was much better] amassed wealth ,made a mess of the public
administration and emptied the treasury and put the entire power
situation in doldrums and is running for next term and needless to add
here that ex PCC President’s son who was acquitted from murder is out
in the open, present PCC president has reserved the birth for himself
and his son so much so for the son stroke and they will continue to
rule the common man of India ?

The REDS - Read communists =are called the Shikhandis in the Indian Political System.useless to pen words on these weirdos

Just
put yourself in the shoes of the Indian Jawan [ who is fighting in the
chills of Ladakh, heat of Rajasthan etc] with NOT EVEN bare minimum
essentials or the KISAN who is not even getting the right price for his
produce, forget getting quality seeds ,What if they go on STRIKE ? Whom
are they fighting for ? whom are they producing for ?

Don t
you [HONEST INDIANS] believe that time has come to take DIRECT ACTION
rather than doing passive work and allowing this nonsense to go on ,.,,
and talk of HIGH MORAL GROUND and be Born Again Tigers -rather - than
lead the way … ?

Do you think TIME HAS COME ? or the present
youth might say - Uncle, Dad, Mum , Aunt you had your fun why are you
stopping us from having our fun , let us be corrupt, let us enjoy
looting the public wealth, pray we can do much better than you and more
faster that’s what every generation has shown. Do you think they need
your permission or….?

So as as empathetic Indian towards our JAWAN AND KISAN , I ask

Let us lead by TRUTH AND SERVICE or close shutters on ACB , CBI etc because we lack not political will but HONEST PUBLIC WILL.

My grandfather an ex Indian Soldier told me one thing - Tell the truth always

BASH ON REGARDLESS…..

Consciously or otherwise If this reading has hurt someone , I am not apologizing…

JAI JAWAN- JAI KISAN - JAIHIND

Share it with other Indians - Thanks for your time

SCUM OR SCAM BAG MILLIONAIRES

Web Extract with my comments

Beware:
Recession may be Hayekian

28 Jan 2009

Governments
across the globe are using Keynesian stimuli to revive drooping economies.

Even
George Bush has presided over the greatest stimuli

in US history,
with a projected fiscal deficit of $1.2 trillion and monetary injection of
almost $2 trillion by the Fed. But is the recession Keynesian? Trillions of dollars of stimuli have failed
to end the downswing. Keynesians argue that even trillions are not enough.
Really?

The current recession looks more Hayekian than Keynesian. A Keynesian
recession represents a sudden fall in demand, and can be remedied within six
months by pumping enough purchasing power into the economy. A Hayekian
recession, however, is caused by misallocation of resources over a long
period, driven by unrealistic interest rates, ending in a bust that requires
years of structural adjustment. Such a recession can last a decade (as in Japan in the
1990s).

The many recessions between World War II and the oil shock of 1973 proved
amenable to Keynesian remedies. But 1973-80 witnessed a Hayekian recession,
caused by excess pumping of money into economies in an attempt to stimulate
them. Rising trade union demands meant that the stimuli translated into
higher wages and inflation, not higher production.

After this era of stagflation, economists could hardly utterly the word
'Keynesian' without a snigger ? it had become a joke.

However, the recessions of 1991 and 2001 were mild affairs remediable by
Keynesian stimuli. Keynes was back in fashion. So, when the subprime mortgage
crisis hit the US
in 2007, it responded with Keynesian nostrums. But to no avail.

Politicians want to be seen as quick and effective. They love Keynesianism,
which puts them in the driver's seat, allowing them to portray recessions as
caused by greedy business villains, and paint themselves as rescuers.

But Hayekian recessions occur when politicians themselves distort the economy
for years, creating misallocations of resources that ultimately prove
unsustainable. The consequent bust cannot be ended by pumping in more money.
Rather, the entire economic structure must change to correct the historical
misallocations, and make future growth sustainable. This involves wrenching
changes in individual, corporate and political behaviour. Neither the public
nor politicians are quick to acknowledge a Hayekian recession.

They would rather hope it is Keynesian, remediable by pumping in more money.
Yet at some point somebody will surely declare that Emperor Keynes has no
clothes.

The current recession is deeply structural. For a decade, the US has run the biggest trade deficits in
history, matched by corresponding trade surpluses of China, Opec,
and other Asian countries. After the financial crisis of 1997-99, many Asian
countries swore to build large forex reserves to avoid another debacle. So
they deliberately undervalued their exchange rates, ran large current account
surpluses, and so generated large forex reserves. This had to be mirrored in
correspondingly large current account deficits in some other countries. The
biggest turned out to be the US.

This defied conventional economic logic. Normally, rich countries run trade
surpluses, and send their excess savings to poor countries with scarce
capital that are running trade deficits. This normality was turned on its
head by Asian countries determined to build large forex reserves after the
trauma of 1997-99. These forex reserves went mainly into US gilts.

Suddenly the world was flooded with money. The US
trade deficit sent a flood of dollars into Asia
and Opec, which then flooded back into US financial markets, mainly through
forex reserves. Bernanke called this the Asian savings glut. The flood of
dollars drove down long-term interest rates, especially in the US, and drove
up asset prices. It became highly profitable for Americans to borrow cheaply
to invest in houses, stocks and commodities. Even when the Fed raised
short-term interest rates in 2006, long-term rates remained low because of
the flood of money from Asia. Innovations in
the US
financial system, some productive and some mere con-games, encouraged
leverage by everybody ? individuals, corporations, banks, speculators. This
was classical Hayekian misallocation.

This misallocation yielded mouth-watering short-term gains. It proved a huge
stimulus for the global economy, which grew at its fastest rate in history in
2003-08. Record US trade deficits sucked in record imports of manufactures
from Asia and oil from Opec. Asia in turn
bought record quantities of commodities from Africa and Latin
America
to be converted into manufactures for export. Thus the
whole world economy boomed as never before, and so did asset prices.

Yet the boom was patently unsustainable. American households, who
historically saved 6% of disposable income, started saving nothing at all,
and dipped into their wealth to spend as never before. Today, this seems
terribly irresponsible. Yet the boom had hugely increased the wealth of
Americans, and it was logical for them to spend part of this wealth. The
spending spree was subsidised by artificially low interest rates, which also
generated bubbles in the markets for houses, stocks and commodities.

These bubbles have now burst. A Keynesian stimulus amounts to an attempt to
re-inflate those bubbles. That is neither practical nor wise. The US government
in 2008 mailed $80 billion to households to stimulate spending, but
households spent only $12 billion of that and saved the rest ? they knew,
even if politicians did not, that the old spending spree had to stop.

The world ? and India
? must accept that the global boom of 2003-08 was based on an unsustainable
economic structure. In future, Americans will have to save much more (and
export more), and Asians will have to consume much more (and export much
less) to end existing global imbalances. This Hayekian adjustment, which
started in 2007, may take years to complete.

So, the global ? and Indian ? economy may not revive in mid-2009. Even if it
does, the recovery may be so weak as to count for little. Hayekian theory
suggests that we may have to wait till 2010 or 2011 for a sustained economic
bounce. One ray of hope: the current recession may be partly Keynesian, even
if mainly Hayekian. That may diminish its travails.

Handling Layoff -Personally and Professionally

Handling Layoff -Personally and Professionally

Hi
guys n gals - all those who have been laid off or on the verge of shake
out. There are few things which I would like to share and its upto you
How you take it or leave it!

Whatever excuses the companies are giving for your layoff is absolute rubbish. The fact of the matter is the guy who is asking you to leave does not understand that he is next on the list. Its
better we accept the TRUTH and that is the financial mess the world has
got into is because of not economic but attitudinal.Attitude ! What !
you might say !Yep you heard right it pro!.The Attitude with which we
handle money.Big time companies take huge credits from banks and other
financial institutions and do not repay on time and mess it up by
window dressing and fudging accounts and telling LIES to its
shareholders. All are part of it hence WE.Now tell me If you go to a
super market does he give you credit for buying a toothpaste? Why
should these financial rich companies take credit and mess up our jobs
and careers and our lives on personal and professional front. A company
like TATA’s wants a bail out for a NANO project and our Modi obliges by
1900 crores for their[ TATA's] strategic blunder from tax payer’s
money.Didn’t TATA’s know that starting any project in the RED LAND of
West Bengal is a disaster right from the word go then its those Senior
Manager’s at TATA’s must be sacked first. 95% of the IT, ITES, BPO’s
etc companies take candidates with Fake CV’s Fake experience
certificates and project their “QUALITY ” bench strength and try to
grab the international projects and why blame the fresher or the H.R
guy?

Putting S bands or some balderdash bands does not make sense. The Top
blokes never believe in transparency whether in corporate or in private

especially the white elephants of India[IAS/IPS officers-90% of them
are huge burden to Indian economy and very few 10% are honest] are huge
burden to the tax payer’s money.Promote e governance and e literacy at
all gram panchayat, mandal and all municipal levels and use RTI and
Consumer forum to the maximum .

Now coming to our main issue

1.Come to terms with the layoff emotionally in your mind and remember ” EVEN THIS WILL PASS AWAY”.If you are comfortable with yourself you will be comfortable with the world

2.Tell the truth to your near and dear ones that you have been asked to
quit and make it a point that YOU SHOULD RESIGN AND THE COMPANY SHOULD
NOT THROW you out.You kick the blokes ,they should not kick you.At
least you’ll feel better.

3. Time for some wise spending! yes spending on your basic essential
resources, like you got a nice offer on your mobile service take one
year validity with full talk time, or buy essential groceries like rice
or eggs at wholesale.Keep your medical kit .Pay your health insurance
and save the info.

4. Cancel all credit cards and settle it for one time shot and close
them at best deal and take it from me most of the companies are ready
for it so BARGAIN BARGAIN and close all cards except one Credit and
Debit card from different banks.

5. Keep enough money for you to survive with basic necessities and reduce all party gifts, etc.

6.Cut that A.C and two mobiles,go back to fan and single mobile.

7. Plan your schedule such that your vehicle fuel is used optimally and
complete all tasks in one by one .Do not take your car or 2 wheeler
just to visit or in some time wasting activities.

8. Keep your spending spree to the bare minimum and only for basic
essentials.Ask now should I be a job seeker or job giver? and see what
happens!

9.Discover your spiritual side, Do that now WHICH you always wanted to
do passionately but always postponed it for lack of time or resources
or whatever reason. Now that you have time ,do your SWOT analysis and
Live your PASSION , If you do not live it now then when PAL!.

Rediscover the REAL YOU and explore what you were born for and go for it

“To be happy you have to be simple and to be simple its tough”

C’mon now get that smile back on your face yeah! that ’s nice , discover your NEW ATTITUDE AND NEW YOU.

Cheers! Smile

your pal

INDIAN
LOOT

(And we all are real sufferers because we are salaried people, we pay taxes,
we pay other bills like electricity bills, water tax, education tax, property
tax, etc. on time and many of us from middle/upper middle class families)

Is India
a poor Country? Revelation of Swiss Bank Accounts.

This is so
shocking. If black money deposits were an Olympics event, India would have won a gold medal
hands down. Russia,
the second best, has four times less deposit. US does not even figure in the
top five! India
has more money in Swiss banks than all the other countries combined. Recently, due
to international pressure, the Swiss government agreed to disclose the names of
the account holders, but only if the respective governments formally asked for
it. The Indian government is not asking for the details. No marks for guessing
why! We need to start a movement to pressure the government to do so. This is
perhaps the only way and a golden opportunity to expose the high and mighty and
weed out corruption.

Is India
poor?

Ask Swiss
banks with personal account deposit bank of $1500 billion in foreign reserve
which have been misappropriated. Considering that the amount is 13 times larger
than the country’s foreign debt, one needs to rethink if India is indeed a poor country.
illegal personal accounts in foreign banks of dishonest industrialists, scandalous
politicians and corrupt IAS, IRS, IPS, IFS officers have a sum of around $ 1500
billion. An amount about 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt.

With this
amount, 45 crore poor people can get Rs 1,00,000 each. This huge amount has
been appropriated from the people of India by exploiting and betraying
them. Once this huge amount of black money comes back to India, the entire foreign debt can
be repaid

in 24 hours. After paying the entire foreign debt, we will have surplus amount,
almost 12 times larger than the foreign debt. If this surplus amount is
invested in earning interest, the amount of interest will be more than the
annual budget of the Central government. So even if all the taxes are
abolished, then too the Central government will be able to maintain the country
very comfortably.

Some 80,000
people travel to Switzerland
every year, of whom 25,000 travel very frequently. ‘Obviously, these people
won’t be tourists. They must be traveling there for some other reason,’
believes an official involved in tracking illegal money. And, clearly, he isn’t
referring to the commerce ministry bureaucrats who’ve been flitting in and out
of Geneva ever
since the World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations went into a tailspin!
Just read the following details and note how these dishonest industrialists,
scandalous politicians, corrupt officers, cricketers, film actors, illegal sex
trade and protected wildlife operators, to name just a few, sucked this
country’s wealth and prosperity. This may be the picture of deposits in Swiss
banks only.

What about
other international banks? Black money in Swiss banks. Swiss Banking
Association report, 2006 details bank deposits in the territory of Switzerland
by nationals of following countries:

Top Five

1.
India - $1,456 billion

2.
Russia - $ 470 billion

3.
UK - $390 billion

4.
Ukraine - $100 billion

5.
China - $ 96 billion

Now let’s do the maths. India with $1456 billion or $1.4 trillion
has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world combined.

Public loot since 1947

Can we
bring back our money? It is one of the biggest loots witnessed by mankind. The
loot of the Aam Aadmi (common man) since 1947, by his brethren occupying public
office. It has been orchestrated by politicians, bureaucrats and some
businessmen. The list is almost all encompassing. No wonder, everyone in India
loots with impunity and without any fear. What is even more depressing in that
this ill-gotten wealth of ours has been stashed away abroad into secret bank
accounts located in some of the world’s best known tax havens. And to that
extent the Indian economy has been stripped of its wealth. Ordinary Indians may
not be exactly aware of how such secret accounts operate and what are the rules
and regulations that go on to govern such tax havens. However, one may well be
aware of ‘Swiss bank accounts,’ the shorthand for murky dealings, secrecy and
of course pilferage from developing countries into rich developed ones. In
fact, some finance experts and economists believe tax havens to be a conspiracy
of the western world against the poor countries. By allowing the proliferation
of tax havens in the 20th century, the western world explicitly encourages the
movement of scarce capital from the developing countries to the rich. In March
2005, the Tax Justice Network (TJN) published a research finding demonstrating
that $11.5 trillion of personal wealth was held offshore by rich individuals
across the globe. The findings estimated that a large proportion of this wealth
was managed from some 70 tax havens. Further, augmenting these studies of TJN,
Raymond Baker — in his widely celebrated book titled ‘Capitalism’s Achilles
Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free Market System’ — estimates that at
least $5 trillion have been shifted out of poorer countries to the West since
the mid-1970. It is further estimated by experts that 1 % of the world’s
population holds more than 57 % of total global wealth, routing it invariably
through these tax havens. How much of this is from India is anybody’s guess. What is
to be noted here is that most of the wealth of Indians parked in these tax
havens is illegitimate money acquired through corrupt means.

Naturally,
the secrecy associated with the bank accounts in such places is central to the
issue, not their low tax rates as the term ‘tax havens’ suggests. Remember
Bofors and how India
could not trace the ultimate beneficiary of those transactions because of the
secrecy associated with these bank accounts?

Is there anybody who can save India?

Yes we all
can do it if we all increase our tolerance level (ability to ignore), patience
level (ability to wait) and greed to get anything & everything on the
planet immediately and/or instantly and in turn avoiding all types of short
cuts.

More over
if following proactive majors are taken, that will also do some wonders
namely:-

1.
First
& foremost, stop giving hard earned money in cash to any one. Issue cross
cheques only.

2.
Stop
breaking traffic rules & regulations while driving and in turn stop giving
cash bribe to all the cops.

3.
Empower
about this information to everyone within Your e-mail community.

4.
Buy
everything and anything which based on need than buying anything & every
thing based on comfort and/or because of fear factor.

5.
Try
Your level best to live simple life & preach for the same within Your own
family.

6.
Avoid
getting carried away by media hype (that we all hear and/or see). Do more good
homework. Write down home work. Discuss with family members. Take their views
and then take a decision on everything.

See
the expressions of a person so disgusted with he system. This has been sent
to the Editor Times of India
Mumbai.

PLEASE READ N FORWARD AS MANY PEOPLE IN YOUR
CONTACT LIST

LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER

Dear Mr. Prime minister

I am a typical mouse from Mumbai.. In the local train
compartment which has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse.
Mouse at least squeak but we don’t even do that.

Today I heard your speech. In which you said ‘NO BODY
WOULD BE SPARED’. I would like to remind you that fourteen years has passed
since serial bomb blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main
conspirator. Till today he is not caught. All our bolywood actors, our
builders, our Gutka king meets him but your Government can not catch him.
Reason is simple; all your ministers are hand in glove with him. If any
attempt is made to catch him everybody will be exposed. Your statement
‘NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED’ is nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate
people of India.

Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attack
carried out by about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing
continues days are not away when terrorist will attack by air, destroy our
nuclear reactor and there will be one more Hiroshima.

We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to
Bomb to Tomb. You promised Mumbaikar Shanghai what you have given us is
Jalianwala Baug.

Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so
long to kick out this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi
family. Loyalty to Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent
people, isn’t it?

I am born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight
years. Believe me corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the politician, Sharad Pawar, Chagan
Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray , Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao
Deshmukh all are rolling in money. Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the
worst Chief minister I have seen. His only business is to increase the FSI
every other day, make money and send it to Delhi so Congress can fight next election.
Now the clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fisherman so they
can build concrete house right on sea shore. Next time terrorist can
comfortably live in those house , enjoy the beauty of sea and then attack the
Mumbai at their will.

Recently I had to purchase house in Mumbai. I met about
two dozen builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like
me knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI you and your
finance minister are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? To the
underworld isn’t it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate
people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time please come to
me, I will tell you everything.

If this has been land of fools, idiots then I would not have
ever cared to write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side we are
reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side you politician has
converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu, Muslim,
Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, Creamy
Schedule caste only what I am not is INDIAN. You politician have raped every
part of mother India
by your policy of divide and rule.

Take example of former president Abdul Kalam. Such a
intelligent person, such a fine human being. You politician didn’t even spare
him. Your party along with opposition joined the hands, because
politician feels they are supreme and there is no place for good person.

Dear Mr Prime minister you are one of the most
intelligent person, most learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR.
First and foremost expose all selfish politician. Ask Swiss bank to give name
of all Indian account holder. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let
them find wolf among us. There will be political upheaval but that will
better than dance of death which we are witnessing every day. Just give
us ambient where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of
law. Everything else will be taken care of.

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be
lead by one person or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?

Now The Solution

E-Governance
is the use of information and communication technologies to support good
governance. It has the following main dimensions :

GOVERNMENT
TO CITIZEN (G2C)

G2C will
aim at connecting citizens to government by talking to citizens and supporting
accountability, by listening to citizens and supporting democracy, and by
improving public services. It will involve better services to the citizens
through single point delivery mechanism and will involve areas like:

E-Citizen

Under
e-citizen integrated service centres will be created. The purpose of these
centres will be to take over the various customer services in due course. It
will offer services like issue of Certificates, Ration Cards, Passports,
Payment of Bills and taxes

etc .
These centres will become one-stop Government Shops for delivery of all
services.

E-Transport

The
transport aspects that can be easily e-governed include:

Registration
of motor vehicles, Issue of driving licenses, Issue of plying permissions
(Permits), Tax and fee collection through Cash and Bank Challans and Control of
Pollution

E-Medicine

It will
involve linking of various hospitals in different parts of the country and
provide better medical services to the citizen.

E-Education

E-Education
will constitute various initiatives of educating the citizen and the Government
with the various Information technologies

E-Registration

E-Governing
the registration and transfer of the properties and stamp duty to be paid
thereon will bring substantial reduction of paper work and reduce the
duplicating of

entries.
Further the transparency in work will increase and the overall time of process
registration will reduce.

The
spirit behind G2C services will encompass all the services that the Government
is delivering to its citizens.

Essentials
for achievement

Information
for All
:
Keeping the citizen informed, providing him with details of Government
activities. The citizen will act as watch dog to Government if the information
will be available to him. Certain interest groups like the journalists,
opposition will always keep an eye on the expenditure of the Government, status
of

which will
be available on-line. The same will bring accountability amongst Civil
Servants. The rationale is to increase the pressure on staff to perform well
and to improve public understanding of government.

Citizen
Feedback
:
Citizen feedback is must for improving the Government Services. Unless the
Government listens to its customer, it will not be able to find out what does
the citizens want. The elected representatives who are said to be voice of citizens
also are not the true voice for they get their votes according to their
offerings and not their offerings are according to customer wants. In short it
is an effort to make the public sector decision responsive to citizens’ view or
needs.

Improving
services
:
World’s best companies have done it, Indian companies have copied them,
Governments abroad have followed the suit, why can’t the Indian Government.
Improving the service delivered to the citizen on dimensions such as

speed,
quality, reliability, convenience and cost. Information Technology will have a
big role to play in the same; the services can be delivered from 24-hour
one-stop

Government
shops.

CONSUMER
TO GOVERNMENT (C2G)

C2G will
mainly constitute the areas where the citizen interacts with the Government. It
will include areas like election when citizens vote for the Government; Census

where he
provides information about himself to the Government; taxation where he is
paying taxes to the Government.

E-Democracy

The
e-democracy is an effort to change the role of citizen from passive information
giving to active citizen involvement. In an e-democracy the Government will be
informing the citizen, representing the citizen, encouraging the citizen to
vote,

consulting
the citizen and engaging the citizen in the Governance. Taking the citizens
input about the various government policies by organizing an e-debate will
further strengthen the e-democracy. The concept of e-debate is similar to chat
over the

Internet,
wherein not only the citizens but also the political leaders contesting the
elections participate. The citizens give their feedback about the various
policies of the

parties
and particularly the manifesto of the party. The initiative will further
strengthen the process by enhancing the representative role, improving
accessibility of citizens to their elected members and developing the capacity
of elected

representatives
to engage in e-government. Elected members will also be provided with access to
the local authority’s Intranet and e-mail systems so that they become available
online for decision making and people can easily access them.

Essentials
for achievement:

Citizen
Participation
:
For achievement of the above initiative the citizen has to participate in the
Government Business and therefore spreading awareness becomes the
responsibility of the State. The elections should not be fought on the
principle of what one party or other has to offer. But they should be fought

on the
principle of what the citizens require. Market research programs should be
carried out using the Information Systems to determine the needs of the
citizens. GIS could be used as a tool to find out potential gaps in the
services offered.

GOVERNMENT
TO GOVERNMENT (G2G)

This can
also be referred as e-Administration. It involves improving
government processes by cutting costs, by managing performance, by making
strategic connections within government, and by creating empowerment. It will
involve networking all Government offices so as to produce synergy among them.
The major areas are:

E-Secretariat

Secretariat
which is the seat of power has a lot of valuable information regarding the
functioning of the State. The cross-linking of various departments and exchange
of information amongst various components will simplify the process of
Governance.

E-Police

E-Police
will help to built citizen confidence. There will be two databases. One of
police personnel and the other of criminals. The database of personnel will
have the records of their current and previous postings. This will help to
track policemen specialized in certain geographical regions and skills. Take
for example, we want to look for a forensic expert. The database within seconds
gives the list of all forensic experts. The same database will give the track
of their details like service record, family background etc which will also be
helpful in intelligent posting and promotion

of
personnel. The second database will be of criminals. This database has to be
upgraded to national database for its total utility. By just typing the name of
a criminal a police officer will

be able to
know the details of his past activities, including his modus operandi and the
area of operation.

Further a
database like this will help tap the criminals easily for all the police
stations will have simultaneous access to their record.

The module
will also include G2C activities like online filing of FIR’s, finding the case
status of an FIR. Creating a database of Lost and Found can assist further lost
and found of valuables and individuals.

E-Court

The
pending court cases in India
has brought the legal system to a halt. Not only are the consumers asking for
changes in the administration, but also the system will collapse if it
continues in this manner. IT can transform the system and bring in the

court
cases to a level of zero dependency. Creating a database of cases can do the
same. In fact such a system will help to avoid all the appeals to High Courts
and Supreme Court, for the Judges can consider the appeals from an intranet
wherein the

case remains
in the same district court but the Higher
Court
gives their decision online based on the
recorded facts of the case. Such a step will not only help the citizens but
will also reduce the backlog of cases. Further the use of IT in the areas like
recording

of court
proceedings, high resolution remote video to identify fraudulent documents,
live fingerprints scanning and verification, remote probation monitoring,
electronic entry of reports and paper work will further speed up the court
proceedings.

State Wide
Networks

This will
involve linking all the departments of the Government with various district
headquarters and the state capital, facilitating the flow of information
between the various state departments and it’s constituents. Here various
blocks will be linked to district Headquarters, district headquarters to State
Headquarters and State Headquarters to the National Capital.

Essentials
for achievement

Cutting
Expenditure
:
With proper process control the input output ratio can be improved. The same can
be achieved by cutting financial time costs. Cutting Government expenditure
will lead to saving and accountability.

Organize
around outcomes, not tasks
. This principle suggests that a single person should perform all the
steps in a process and that the person’s job be designed around the outcome or
objective rather than a single task. Say, for example, a citizen applies for a
permit – it becomes the duty of the receiving authority that the

citizen
gets the same, rather than moving around to get it done.

Managing
process performance
: planning, monitoring and controlling the performance of process
resources (human, financial and other). Informatisation supports this by
providing information about process performance and performance standards. The
rationale is to make more efficient or effective use of

process
resources.

Establish
a network:
Treat
geographically dispersed resources as though they were centralized. Government
can use databases, telecommunications networks, and standardized processing
systems to get the benefits of scale and coordination,

while
maintaining the benefits of flexibility and service. Strategic connections in
Government should be established like central-to-local, ministry-to-ministry,
executive-to-legislature, and decision maker-to-data store.

Delegate
and Empower:
Put
the decision point where the work is performed, and build control into the
process. Thus, for overall GPR to succeed the decisionmaking should pass on to
the people who do the actual work from the people who are just monitoring it.
People engaged in actual activities should be empowered to

make
decisions at the required focal point and hence to delegate such activities on
their own so that the process itself can have built in controls. This will not
only speed up the process but will cut cost as well.

GOVERNMENT
TO BUSINESS (G2B)

E-Taxation

This will
constitute the various services a business house needs to get from the
Government, which includes getting licenses etc. In a similar scenario, it can
also flow from a business house to the Government as in the case of
procurements, from such business houses by the Government. This will become a
B2G service.

Essentials
for achievement

Standards:
Standards for
Electronic Transactions or E-Commerce needs to be built. The standards will
also include standards on content etc.

Payment
Mechanism:
A
secure payment mechanism needs to be built to enable payments over the
electronic medium.

PKI:
PKI or Public
key Infrastructure is required for secure and authentic transactions.

GOVERNMENT
TO NGO (G2N)

E-Society

Building
interactions beyond the boundaries of government by developing communities, by
building government partnerships, and by building civil society. It will
involve building various associations or interest groups that will ensure the
betterment of the society. Such initiatives deal particularly with the
relationship

between
government and citizens: either as voters/stakeholders from whom the public
sector derives its legitimacy, or as customers who consume public services.

Essentials
for Achievement

Publishing: Delivering data to citizens. This
will involve open access to Government Information. The citizen has a right to
every Government information and its activities.

Interaction:
Delivering data to citizens and
receiving data from citizens. This will involve taking feedback from the
citizens and interacting with the interest

groups.

Slowdown forces cos to put hiring plans on hold

India Inc cuts jobs, frills to stay in shape

NEW
DELHI/MUMBAI: Layoffs, firings and salary cuts are increasingly
becoming all too common across India Inc, highlighting a deepening
slowdown in the economy that has forced companies to take the knife to
costs to protect their bottom line.

From banking and finance to
aviation, from manufacturing to information technology, no sector
appears immune, as companies look beyond hiring freezes to job cuts,
mirroring a trend across much of the developed world which has seen
tens of thousands of people out of employment.

Admittedly India,
among the few major global economies that will see respectable GDP
growth this year, may not see job losses quite like that being felt in
the West, it has nevertheless got policymakers worried.

Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh earlier this week urged industry to desist from
laying off people and promised to cut interest rates and levies to
shore up the economy. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already
turned its attention to driving up growth from containing inflation,
and cut key reserve ratios for banks and a short-term interest rate,
signalling a bias in favour of lower rates.

Yet on Friday, news
about job cuts came in from different directions. L&T Infotech, a
wholly-owned subsidiary of the country's largest engineering company
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is shedding up to 5% of its workforce of
nearly 10,000 employees, according to market sources.

"Rather
than give out pink slips, people are being forced to hand in their
resignations," said one person familiar with the development. The
company declined to comment, but the move has a worrying significance
considering that L&T Infotech gets much of its revenues from the
manufacturing sector and outside the crisis-hit financial services
industry.

The financial sector continued to see more
blood-letting, as the blows from the axe wielded in New York and London
were felt in India. The Indian arms of Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse
started retrenching employees while Merrill Lynch's operations in the
country saw the second wave of firings.

On Thursday, Goldman
slashed its workforce by close to a dozen in its Mumbai office, which
has close to 100 employees. Goldman Sachs has also lowered headcount at
its Bangalore operations by around 30.

There were grim warnings
from the country's textile sector, where the industry body, the
Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), said some 7,00,000
people had lost their jobs so far this year, and 5,00,000 more were
likely to go in the next 2-3 months.

A majority of layoffs have
affected daily-wagers who constitute about 25-30% of a company's
workforce. The Indian textile industry employs some 35 million people.
"Mills are running for hardly 3-4 days a week, or operating just 75% of
their capacities or have reduced shifts from three to one," said CITI
secretary general DK Nair. Overseas, the gloom on the job front
continued unabated as fund manager Fidelity Investments became the
latest to announce that it was cutting nearly 1,300 jobs and warned of
more layoffs early next year in response to declining markets.

Friday's
closely-watched jobs data out of the US showed that employers cut
payrolls by a much steeper-than-expected 2,40,000 jobs in October, as
unemployment rate shot up to its highest in more than 14 years, Reuters
reported. The US Labour Department's report showed that last month's
job cuts followed a steeply revised cut of 2,84,000 in September, the
most severe monthly loss since November 2001, just after that year's
September terror attacks, the agency added.

Meanwhile, Indian
steelmaker Tata Steel slashed about 400 jobs in the UK and Ireland at
its Corus Steel unit, citing poor business conditions as a result of
the slowdown in the steel industry. However, Tata Steel has firmly
ruled out any job cuts at its Indian operations.

MUMBAI:
Recruitments by companies have come to a virtual halt due to the global
financial turmoil, said HR managers participating in the annual
national human resources
conference organised by SIES College of Management Studies (SIESCOMS).

Karthik
Narendra, an HR manager at the country's largest engineering firm
Larsen & Toubro, said: "We are only recruiting in our power
business since it is an emerging sector. Recruitments for all other
businesses have stopped. We are engaged in more internal reshuffling to
try and promote talent in-house."

Consumer goods company Voltas
has also halted its recruitments plans. "The services sector has been
hit badly by the recent meltdown. We have stopped hiring, but are
engaged in training the talent that we already have," said a senior
official at Voltas.

High attrition rates, a problem that was
prevalent across sectors, is no longer a serious issue for HR managers.
With many companies laying off people to cut costs, those who haven't
been given the pink slips are holding on to their jobs.

Ispat
Industries, which was hit badly in the recent crisis, is fine-tuning
its operations and is trying to cut costs. Said Ispat Industries HR
director BR Singh: "We used to hire trainees every year from campuses,
but we have stopped it this time. Instead, we are focusing on driving
and motivating our current workforce. Earlier, with many new plants
starting, retention was an issue, but not any more."

Johnson
& Johnson, one of the largest healthcare companies in the world,
hasn't been hit as much, according to Vikas Shirodkar, Asia-Pacific
regional head for labour and employee relations. He said attrition will
continue because people want better salaries despite the market
situation.

Investment banks begin to cut jobs in Indian arms

10 Nov 2008, 1126 hrs IST, George Smith Alexander & Mahima Puri, ET Bureau

MUMBAI/NEW
DELHI: The Indian arms of global banks have started cutting jobs in
sync with the restructuring of operations overseas and with business
volumes declining due to the economic slowdown. Some of the bigger
foreign banks with retail banking operations in India have also started
reducing the number of employees in their consumer banking operations,
according to bankers familiar with the matter.

On Thursday,
Goldman Sachs slashed its workforce by close to a dozen in its Mumbai
office. The Mumbai office, opened a couple of years ago, has close to
100 people working in investment banking, investment research, equity
sales, corporate finance, private equity besides asset management.
Goldman Sachs has also lowered its headcount by close to 30 officials
in its outsourcing arm in Bangalore where it has a staff strength of
more than 2,900.

Goldman has said that it would cut close to 10%
of its workforce globally. Credit Suisse has also slashed some jobs in
the country. A Credit Suisse official spokesperson said, "Due to market
conditions and projected staffing levels required to meet client needs,
we are reducing our global headcount by approximately 500 across our
investment banking division and certain support functions."

The
Mumbai office now has around 160 officials in investment banking,
research, equity sales, corporate finance among other functions. It has
doubled the staff strength in its I-banking department in the last one
year and now has 25-30 officials.

Other than equity and support
functions, both these firms have also cut jobs in the investment
banking business. Goldman Sachs has also reduced the number of staffers
in its principal investment business. The firm, which was also
considering seeking a primary dealership license, has now put this on
the backburner although it will go ahead with its asset management
plans. Credit Suisse is also said to have put on hold its plans for AMC
business.

According to Thomson Reuters, equity market offerings
in India are down by 77% to $6.1 bil-lion, while in Asia the business
is down by 62.4% to $96 billion. Bankers said that most banks had built
up their team in the country in the past one year hoping that business
volumes would go up substantially. Senior bankers pointed that banks
are currently looking at cutting only excess flab.

"We have
received a number of calls from I-bankers, especially those working
with the foreign banks. The calls have multiplied many fold in the past
one month," said Talent Trackers founder Shekhar Vaishnav. "Two
American banks have started 'soft-firing'. This means that employees
have intimated to look out for jobs by January 15, 2009, but in a
discreet manner, so that the bank's reputation does not get affected,"
he added.

Merrill Lynch, which had earlier told 20 of its
staffers to go, now has laid off more officials in a second round
exercise. Foreign banks such as HSBC is also said to be looking at
downsizing its staff in personal loan
, credit card and some of the
other segments. Sources said that the bank could be looking at
downsizing by around 200 officials. Bank officials said: "We have not
asked staff to put in their papers.

We assess our businesses and
our business strategy on an ongoing basis. If, as a result, staff are
freed up from one activity, the effort is to redeploy them in other
businesses and activities. However current dynamic market conditions
require that every organisation’s business strategies be flexible
enough to take on emergent challenges and opportunities."

ABN
Amro is also said to be looking at a similar exercise in the con-sumer
side. Sources said the bank is looking at a major round of lay-offs
across Asia. However, an ABN Amro spokesperson said, "We have not
announced any job cuts or rightsizing of businesses." The bank is
likely to retrench staff in its credit cards
and personal loan segments. It is also looking at other departments too.

L&T Infotech goes into job cut mode
8 Nov 2008, 0000 hrs IST, N Shivapriya & Deeptha Rajkumar, ET Bureau

MUMBAI:
L&T Infotech, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the country's largest
engineering company Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is trimming its
workforce
by asking some employees to resign. The resignations are happening
across its development centres in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai, according
to people with knowledge of the development.

The staff
downsizing by a major player like L&T Infotech is one of the early
signs of slowing IT spends in areas outside the crisis-hit financial
services industry. Unlike the majority of Indian IT and BPO firms which
earn a large part of their revenues from banking and financial services
clients, L&T Infotech gets most of its revenues from manufacturing
clients.

So far, most of the downsizing in the IT industry was a
fallout of troubles in the financial services sector and in many cases,
a direct impact of customers closing down and project cutbacks and
delays. This is one of the first instances of an IT firm with
significant focus on the manufacturing sector being affected. "Rather
than give out pink slips, people are being forced to hand in their
resignations," said one person familiar with the development.

Sources
close to the company estimated the number of forced resignations till
date to be around 100. Market sources, however, quoted a higher figure
and said it could be as high as 5% of the company's total strength of
10,000. L&T Infotech responded to a mail from ET saying it had no
comments.

In the past, the company's growth has lagged some of
its larger peers because of its focus on the manufacturing sector.
Financial services players have far more aggressive tech spends than
those in the manufacturing. The latest Nasscom survey ranks the company
as the tenth largest software exporter from India.

Fidelity to cut 1,300 jobs this month
7 Nov 2008, 2018 hrs IST, PTI

NEW
YORK: World’s leading fund house Fidelity Investments has announced
chopping about 1,300 jobs later this month, followed by a second round
of layoffs in the first quarter next year.

Fidelity business
units would commence with a layoff of about 2.9 per cent of its 44,400
employee workforce later this month, the company said in a statement.

The
fund house also announced a second layoff in the first quarter next
year, the details of which would be finalised over the coming weeks.

“Though
we regret having to implement any expense reduction that impacts valued
employees who have made substantial contributions to our success, we
believe this staffing adjustment is necessary,” the company stated.

Global
economic conditions and the unsettled nature of the world’s stock
markets all year long have required businesses around the globe and
across all industries to examine their operations and make adjustments.

Fidelity
executives have been carefully reviewing their work units and
prioritising their business initiatives in order to ensure the company
is well-positioned for the future, the statement added.

“These
are extraordinary times and while Fidelity remains strong and growing,
prudent management warrants that we carefully examine all of our costs
to make certain we come out of this economic downturn in a position to
capitalise on opportunities for our customers,” the company added.

Fidelity
Investments is one of the world’s largest provider of financial
services, with assets of USD three trillion under custody, including
managed assets of $1.4 trillion as of September 30, 2008. The fund
houses’ assets have declined sharply following the meltdown in the
stock markets.

———————————————————————————-

NEW DELHI: The textile industry, which has warned the government of 5-6
lakh lay-offs due to the global downturn, today said the PMO “totally
Jobs
Right approach for different stages of career
ignored” its interests and the largest employment-generating sector after agriculture was feeling “let down”.

The
Northern India Textile Mills Association (NITMA) said that none of its
representatives was invited to the meeting convened by Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh on November 3 to discuss the state of the economy.

“The
Prime Minister had appealed to industry to avoid large-scale layoffs in
the wake of the global economic crisis … The textile industry was
totally ignored by the Prime Minister’s Office. This is the industry
which is going to lay off maximum jobs due to increased maximum cotton
price and cancellation of orders by the US due to recession,” NITMA
President Sunil Jain said.

Top industry leaders like Mukesh
Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal and the heads of three apex chambers -
the CII, the FICCI, Assocham - attended the meeting convened by the
Prime Minister.

Jain said the spinning sector in particular is
in a difficult situation because of increased costs of inputs, mainly
cotton. The industry, directly and indirectly, employs about 35 million
people.

Jain said the export sops have been withdrawn in India,
while countries like China and Pakistan have substantially increased
incentives for their exporters.

Garment exporters have reported a 30-35 per cent drop in volume in the July-September quarter.

The
Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has estimated 6-7 lakh
people are facing job threats because of a slump in export demand.

American Express sacks ‘less than 100′ employees

NEW DELHI: Global travel and payment services major American Express on
Monday said that it has sacked less than a hundred employees in India to
restructure its workforce as part of its global strategy.

“The number is less than a hundred,” American Express India’s
Public Affairs and Communications Director Vibha Bajaj told reporters.

Earlier,
there were reports of about 200 India-based employees of the US company
having been handed over pink slips by the management of India
operations. However, the company spokesperson had declined to comment
upon the development.

The company had, however, said in a
statement that “reduction will occur throughout the company and across
business units, markets and staff groups, primarily focusing on
management and other positions that do not interact directly with
customers”.

Those laid off, according to the information
available, were mainly working in the back offices of the company in
Delhi and Bangalore, sources said.

When asked whether those
“less than a hundred” laid off employees included manager- and senior
manager-level officials, Bajaj answered in the affirmative but she did
not respond to a query whether the number included director-level
officers as well.

Incidentally, the reports of downsizing the
workforce in American Express comes on a day when Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh asked India Inc to “refrain from large-scale layoffs”.
