Male Sexuality, Dyspareunia when Sex Hurts

June 12th, 2012

Although pain during sex is more common in females, they too can suffer  from infections, physical and emotional disorders. In any case,  requires medical attention.

Usually, the term used to describe dyspareunia cases where the woman  experiences pain during intercourse or shortly thereafter. It is a  relatively common symptom, as some studies indicate it may occur in 15  to 20% of all women of reproductive age.

However, men also develop this disease that makes his intimate life, to  the extent that may lose interest in sexual activity. True, its  frequency is lower, as estimates indicate that the incidence of  dyspareunia in the male population does not exceed 5%, but nevertheless  it is a situation that should be ignored, especially since most of the  time can be solved.

Various reasons
It is important to clarify that painful intercourse is not a disease but  a symptom that is linked to anatomical conditions, psychological,  infectious or inflammatory.

Among the anatomic causes three stand out:
I. Phimosis. It is the tightness of the foreskin (skin tissue that  covers the glans penis or upper), which in some people makes it  difficult to retract or move backward. In most cases it is a congenital  malformation, i.e. is present at birth, and is usually discovered by the  pediatrician or the parents, so that is corrected by circumcision  (which cuts operating segment of skin).

However, many men may appear by repeated forced and traumatic retraction  of the foreskin during the first years of life, or by poor hygiene  contribute to the development of infections. In any case, if not  corrected phimosis in adults produce pain when attempting penetration  and, in fact, may result in injury and bleeding during intercourse.

II. Tongue-tie. The frenulum of the penis is small fold of tissue that  connects the foreskin to the glans head, in some men is smaller than  usual, so it’s cracked or injured during penetration, causing intense  burning, pain and sometimes bleeding. Treatment is simple and involves  surgically severing the anatomical structure that causes these problems.

III. Peyronie’s Disease. It is the abnormal curvature of the penis  during erection (deviates “down”), which is due to the development of  fibrous scar tissue under the skin of the male sex organ. Depending on  the severity of the injury, the condition may preclude intercourse or  make it painful erection.

Treatment is complicated, because although you can invoke the  application of drugs, radiation therapy or corrective surgery, often not  achieved the desired effect. Even surgery can cause erectile  dysfunction if it were to damage certain nerve endings.

Microorganisms and inflammation
Another important group of conditions that cause dyspareunia in men are inflammatory processes, highlighting:
I. Prostatitis. The prostate is a male reproductive gland that produces  some of the seminal fluid that protects and nourishes sperm cells in  semen, when it becomes inflamed, usually due to bacterial infection, can  cause sharp pain with ejaculation. Its diagnosis requires a detailed  study of the symptoms and causes through secretions culture, and its  treatment is based on the use of antibiotics prescribed by an urologist  or general practitioner.

II. Urethritis. Is inflammation of the urethra (the tube that carries  urine and semen out through the penis), usually due to bacteria or other  microorganisms, sometimes causes pain during and at the end of sex. The  therapy involves the administration of drugs to eliminate the causative  agent (antibiotics, antifungals), both male and his partner, in order  to prevent mutual contagion.

III. Epididymitis. Is swelling of the epididymis, means by which  testicular secretions are dislodged into the vas deferens and  ejaculatory ducts. It is usually caused by the spread of bacterial  infection in the urethra or bladder, causing pain during ejaculation,  but it may occur when urinating or defecating. His treatment by the  general practitioner or urologist will require antibiotics also should  be given to the couple.

IV. Fungal diseases. The skin infection, penis yeast is a common and  frequent reason for consultation. Usually associated with the  microorganism Candida albicans Transmitted by sexual partner, and causes  small bumps on the glans and body of the member that itch and  discomfort during intercourse. Health care is local application of  antifungal, both for men as for women.

V. Other causes. There are more factors that trigger inflammation,  including genital warts (viral infection that causes warts in the mucosa  of the glans), herpes (mucosal injury that generates pain) or allergic  reactions caused by body care products, lubricants or latex. However, it  is rare conditions that do not always cause dyspareunia, but can be  treated with medical help.

Also for emotional problems

It remains to mention the psychological causes, which are derived from  unconscious conflicts that trigger this type of pain. Although less  common in men than in his female counterpart, we can cite as the source  of certain problems receive a repressive family upbringing In charge of  transferring taboos, prejudices and negative feelings.

More important are the history of sexual abuse or rape, which commonly  occur in childhood, but generate intense conflict and denial of pleasure  prevails until adulthood. The treatment in this case is provided by the  sexologist or psychologist.

It should be noted that in some cases may require the analysis of the  relationship with the couple, and even help in some therapy sessions, to  share views and information important to overcome the situation.

As seen, the majority of conditions that trigger pain during sexual  intercourse in humans have a solution, however, treatment is possible  only when the affected party takes the problems freed from taboos and  prejudices, and decides to go to the general practitioner, urologist or  sex therapist for help.
