Knowing yourself

May 30, 2008 By: Category: ARTICLES

Morning All,

I received the following in my mail a few days back and felt worth sharing with fellow bloggers. So with the permission of the sender, I am sharing the same with you all.

Have a good weekend.

“A short quote today accompanied by some long words around it and how to go about knowing yourself.”

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.”

                                                    –Laozi, Ancient Chinese Philosopher

    People who possess a lot of personal power, or influence, know a secret about life that others tend to overlook. It”s not a complicated secret, but it is one that has a significant impact on self-confidence and personal growth. The secret is as ancient as the study of philosophy - it originates with man”s first inclination to understand himself. So what is this hidden knowledge that gives you power over yourself and others? As Laozi alludes, it is as simple as to Know Yourself.

    Know your essence.  The most significant qualities that truly define who you are as a person. This is not about your physical DNA; it”s about your spiritual, emotional and psychological DNA.

    Know your values. The things that matter most to you in life. Your priorities; your personal commitments; your beliefs; and, your faith.

    Know your strengths.  The natural abilities that you possess, cultivate and develop. These are the skills that you leverage to get things done, either on your own or through influencing others. Your strengths are the tools in your personal lifebox.

    Know your passions.  These are more than your wants and desires; your passions are those things that you cannot live without. They are the objects of your intense desire to both pursue and obtain for increased satisfaction and the betterment of your life.

    Know your tendencies. Habits can be good; and, habits can be bad. You should know all of your habits, as well as the frequency you typically act upon them. Tendencies are deliberate and purposeful actions, and they often produce predictable results. Knowing your habitual tendencies will help you to better identify areas of self-improvement.

    Know your limitations. You will never be good at everything you want to achieve. It”s better to know which skills or activities are beyond your capability to perform at a level of excellence. Influence is derived from expertise, so you need to be able to narrow your focus in order to maximize your time and energy spent.

    Know your goals. The things you really want to achieve in life must be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time sensitive (S.M.A.R.T.). Nebulous, or vague, goals are not conducive to maximizing your personal performance, development or ability to influence others. Clarity is key when it
    comes to setting your goals.

    Know your mission. Pull it all together - essence, values, strengths, passions, tendencies, limitations and goals - and then, give it some direction. This is your mission in life. This is the point on the horizon that you”re working toward yet never reach. It is the star by which you navigate yet never touch. It is the motivation that compels you to be constantly moving forward, striving to make the most of every opportunity presented.

    Knowing yourself gives you tremendous power because it enables you to exude confidence and exert influence over others. Think about the people who positively influence your life. How do they carry themselves? How would you describe their level of self-awareness? Do they seem to “know themselves” and possess a clarity of purpose? Ask them about their mission.

Don’t give up………….

May 28, 2008 By: Category: ARTICLES

One day I decided to quit…

I quit my job, my relationship, my friends, my spirituality… I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with God.

“God”, I asked, “Can you give me one good reason not to quit?”

His answer surprised me…
Look around”, He said. “Do you see the fern and the bamboo?”

“Yes”, I replied.

“When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them.

I gave them light.

I gave them water.

The fern quickly grew from the earth.

Its brilliant green covered the floor.

Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.

He said. “In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. I would not quit.” He said. “Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth.

Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant…But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive.

I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle.” He asked me. “Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots”.

“I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you.” “Don’t compare yourself to others.”

He said. “The bamboo had adifferent purpose than the fern.

Yet they both make the forest beautiful.” “Your time will come”, God said to me.

“You will rise high”
“How high should I rise?” I asked.

“How high will the bamboo rise?” He asked in return. “As high as it can?” I questioned.

“Yes.” He said, “Give me glory by rising as high as you can.”

I left the forest and brought back this story.

Student and Professor

May 27, 2008 By: Category: Humour

After having failed his exam in “Logistics and Organization “, a student goes and confronts his lecturer about it.
Student: “Sir, do you really understand anything about the subject?”

Professor: “Surely I must. Otherwise I would not be a professor!”

Student: “Great, well then I would like to ask you a question.

If you can give me the correct answer, I will accept my mark as is and go. If you however do not know the answer, I want you give me an “A” for the exam. “

Professor: “Okay, it”s a deal. So what is the question?”

Student: “What is legal, but not logical, logical, but not legal, and neither logical, nor legal? “

Even after some long and hard consideration, the professor cannot give the student an answer, and therefore changes his exam mark into an “A”, as agreed.

Afterwards, the professor calls on his best student and asks him the same question.

He immediately answers: “Sir, you are 63 years old and married to a 35 year old woman, which is legal, but not logical. Your wife has a 25 year old lover, which is logical, but not legal. The fact that you have given your wife”s lover an “A”, although he really should have failed, is neither legal, nor logical .”

Thoughts

Hi

Another hectic week gone by and here is another monday - the last Monday of this month. The IPL juggernaut is still rolling on and will see its end this weekend. Summer has been a little bit cruel this year with temperatures recording new highs for this month as compared to the previous years. But compared to other metros in India, it has been comparatively much better and for that you should be thankful to god.

Anyways hope you all had a wonderful week. As usual here are some wonderful (really good ones) thoughts for the week ahead. Have a fun filled rollicking week ahead and get set for the monsoon months ahead.

Due to paucity of time, I am unable to read the blogs of fellow bloggers and might be missing out on some good ones.

Who said “OPEN” and “CLOSE” are words with opposite meanings;
You will always be ‘Open’ to the person who is ‘Close’ to you…..!!!!

Progress has little to do with Speed, but much to do with Direction;
So concentrate on your Direction, not on the Speed.

Simple gardening tip applicable to Life -
Plant yourself next to those who make you breathe freely
and help you grow, not next to those who suffocate you.

Life is a continous challenge, a constant struggle from birth upto death;
We are not made rich by what is in our pocket,but what is in our heart….!!!

Every sunset gives us one day less to live;
But every SUN rise gives one day more to hope…!!
So hope for the best.

There is only one difference between Dream and Aim;
Dream needs effortless sleep
but Aim needs sleepless efforts.

Its not the load that breaks us down,
Its the way we carry it.
The stress lies not in the situation but in the way we deal with it.

The world’s happiest friends never have the “same” characters;
They just have the best understanding of their differences.

LIfe doesn’t give us the people we want.
Instead it gives us the ones we need -
to teach us;
to heal us;
to love us;
to make us exactly the way we should be - be the best.

If victory is certain then even a coward can fight.
But the real brave is the one who still
dares to fight knowing his defeat is certain.

Keep smiling all through the week and god bless you all.

HR PROCESS

May 22, 2008 By: Category: Humour

Hi

Its an earlier post which I am sharing once again becoz……….just read it.

This one looks a bit long… But the ending is hilarious… Read on!

HR Processes:

One day while walking down the street a highly successful Human Resources Manager was tragically hit by a bus and she died. Her soul arrived up in heaven where she was met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter himself.

“Welcome to Heaven,” said St. Peter. “Before you get settled in though, it seems we have a problem. You see, strangely enough, we’ve never once had a Human Resources Manager make it this far and we’re not really sure what to do with you.”

“No problem, just let me in,” said the woman.

“Well, I’d like to, but I have higher orders. What we’re going to do is let you have a day in Hell and a day in Heaven and then you can choose whichever one you want to spend an eternity in.”

“Actually, I think I’ve made up my mind, I prefer to stay in Heaven”, said the woman

“Sorry, we have rules…”

And with that St. Peter put the executive in an elevator and it went down-down-down to hell.

The doors opened and she found herself stepping out onto the putting green of a beautiful golf course. In the distance was a country club and standing in front of her were all her friends - fellow executives that she had worked with and they were well dressed in evening owns and cheering for her. They ran up and kissed her on both cheeks and they talked about old times. They played an excellent round of golf and at night went to the country club where she enjoyed an excellent steak and lobster dinner.

She met the Devil who was actually a really nice guy (kind of cute) and she had a great time telling jokes and dancing. She was having such a good time that before she knew it, it was time to leave. Everybody shook her hand and waved goodbye as she got on the elevator.

The elevator went up-up-up and opened back up at the Pearly Gates and found St. Peter waiting for her.

“Now it’s time to spend a day in heaven,” he said. So she spent the next 24 hours lounging around on clouds and playing the harp and singing. She had great time and before she knew it her 24 hours were up and St. Peter came and got her.

“So, you’ve spent a day in hell and you’ve spent a day in heaven. Now you must choose your eternity,”

The woman paused for a second and then replied, “Well, I never thought I’d say this, I mean, Heaven has been really great and all, but I think I had a better time in Hell.”

So St. Peter escorted her to the elevator and again she went down-down-down back to Hell.

When the doors of the elevator opened she found herself standing in a desolate wasteland covered in garbage and filth. She saw her friends were dressed in rags and were picking up the garbage and putting it in sacks.

The Devil came up to her and put his arm around her.

“I don’t understand,” stammered the woman, “yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and a country club and we ate lobster and we danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland of garbage and all my friends look miserable.”

The Devil looked at her smiled and told…

Three Trees

May 21, 2008 By: Category: ARTICLES

Once there were three trees on a hill. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, “Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty.”
Then the second tree said, “Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull.”

Finally the third tree said, “I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me.”

After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, “This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter.” And he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.

At the second tree a woodsman said, “This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard.” The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true.

One of the woodsmen said, “I don”t need anything special from my tree so I”ll take this one,” and he cut it down. When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark.

The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time.

Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn”t think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said “Peace” and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don”t seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don”t always know what God”s plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.

Thoughts

Another Monday has come; hope you had a wonderful and satisfying week. Here are a few thoughts(not that great ones) to carry you through this week. Have a  fantastic rollicking week ahead. Fellow bloggers will have to excuse me for not going through their blogs and commenting.

Although water falls from a hill, it never thinks it had fallen;
It rises to run as an unstoppable river.
In Life too, if you fall, just rise and move on like the river.

Everyday starts with some EXPECTATIONS;
but everyday ends with some EXPERIENCE;
May the experience match the expectations!

You live in your dream but dreams may die;
Don’t get shattered, never ever cry;
The world is big and has lots to give,
so pick up a new dream.
Thats the way to live.

Mistakes increase your experiences;
Experience decreases your mistakes;
You learn from your mistakes;
Then others learn from your success.

What will you do if one day the whole world will be on one side
and you on the opposite?
Simple just turn back and you will be the leader of the whole world.
Work smart.

True bravery is to arrive home……..fully drunk…
a late night out…..and wifey waiting with a broom
and you ask : “Hey darling……..abhi tak safai kar rahi ho…?

Most of the people refuse to understand the secret code for success
which is very simple and that is
“JUST TRY ONE MORE TIME”

When muddy water is still, mud goes down and is seen clearly;
So if we are calm in difficulties and let it settle,
we can see it clearly and overcome it.

Cherish things while you have them;
once they are gone you will realise how precious they were.
Its ironical that Life can only be understood backward but has to be lived forward.

Life is nothing but a continous measure of our potential;
the greater we stretch our capabilities
the more we can gain from life.

The Seventh Jar

May 15, 2008 By: Category: Blogs

Insatiable Appetite For The Seventh Jar
Once a messenger walking past a tree heard a voice say: “Will you accept seven jars full of gold?” The messenger looked around, but could see no one. The offer was too good to refuse, so he cried aloud: “Yes, I shall accept the seven jars.”

At once the voice replied: “Go home, I have carried the jars to your house.”

The messenger ran home and when he entered the house he saw the jars and found that except one all the jars were brimming with gold coins. But why was the seventh jar empty? He became obsessed with the desire to fill the seventh jar also, for otherwise, his happiness would be incomplete. So he converted all his ornaments into gold coins and put them in the seventh jar but the mysterious vessel was, as before, empty.

Exasperated, the messenger starved himself and his family, saved more money and tried to fill the jar, but it remained as unfulfilled as before. He requested the king for a pay-hike. His salary was doubled. He saved more and into the jar his savings went but the greedy jar showed no sign of filling up.

Begging, cheating, stealing, he acquired more gold that went into the insatiable cavity of the jar. Still, the jar remained unfulfilled.

Seeing his plight the king asked him: “When your pay was half of what you get now, you were happy, cheerful and contented, but with double that pay, I see you morose, care-worn and dejected. What is the matter? Have you got the seven jars?” Taken aback by this question, the messenger confessed to the king.

The king said, “Don”t you know what happens to the person to whom the Yaksha consigns the seven jars? He offered me also the same jars, but I asked him whether this money might be spent or was merely to be hoarded. No sooner had I asked this question than the Yaksha disappeared.”

The king advised the messenger to return the jars to the Yaksha. So the messenger returned to the haunted tree and said: “Take back your gold, O Yaksha.” When he went home he found that the seven jars had vanished as mysteriously as they had appeared. And with it had also vanished his life”s savings.

Ignorance breeds desire and desire prompts us to actions, good and bad. Good actions bring punya , making us eligible for enjoyable experiences. Bad actions cause paap or sin, subjecting us to suffering and sorrow. Both, however, are bondages of the jiva and cause us repeated birth and death, with enjoyments and sufferings intermingled according to our deeds.

To overcome ignorance and desire the Gita propounds the doctrine of Nishkama-karma ? work without desire for the fruits of action. When there is total surrender and work is done without desire, we receive God”s grace.

Desires arise from illusion and ignorance. Philosophers have pointed out that the problem of illusion coexists with a state of ignorance. But when we are illumined, the ignorance vanishes. If one were to honestly report the experiences of the world, one would say, “All these things are mere shadows.”

Swami Vivekananda once wrote in a letter, “Everything in the Universe appears to me now like pictures hanging on the walls of a room.”

To a person who has attained to that state, the entire universe is a two-dimensional affair; there is no concrete reality. Just shadows. And even these, after a time, become obliterated. So desire nothing but God. Work honestly, without desire. This world is good so far as it helps one access the higher world. Otherwise, all ends in illusion and ignorance.

Thoughts for the week

May 11, 2008 By: Category: Thoughts

Hi
Another Monday is here. Hope you all had a wonderful week.

“Like the fresh dewdrops of a new day…..
May God’s loving hands be upon you today
and
all day through the week
to freshen your soul as you start a new day and a new week.”

Here are a few thoughts received during the week.

Success is like a beautiful lover;
It may leave us any time.
Failure is like a MOTHER;
It will teach us some important lessons in life.

[a wonderful thought to receive on MOTHER'S day]

Never walk away from friends when you see some faults;
Be patient and realise that nobody is perfect.
Its Affection that matters not Perfection.

A well wisher is not who meets and talks with you everyday;
Well wisher is the one who may or may not meet you
but always think of you and your happiness.

God has 4 gifts for you -
A key for every problem;
A light for every shadow;
A plan for every tomorrow;
A joy for every sorry.
So enjoy these four gifts of god.

Some friendship are for a fortnight
some for  a month;
some for a season;
some for a year;
and
some for a lifetime;
But some are for a reason.

Someone asked me
“What if I broke your trust someday”
I replied “Trusting you was my decision and proving me right or wrong is YOUR CHOICE”

Do you know  there are two people
who may tell you the truth about yourself.
One - a friend who has lost his temper
and
Second - an enemy who starts loving you.

Problem is not we aim too high and miss it;
Problem is we aim too low and get it.

I met money and told him ” you are just a piece of paper”
Money smiled and replied ” Of course i am a piece of paper,
but I haven’t seen a dustbin yet in life”

Smooth roads never made good drivers;
Smooth seas never made good sailors;
Be strong enough to accept the challenges of life.
Don’t ask life - why me…instead say “Try me”

GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
