Encounter in a darkened theatre

Aarohi was sitting in the movie theatre, a spell bound ex-pression on her face as she watched the horror film unfold before her eyes. This was the first time she had dared to see a film by herself. Her friends had either seen the film or were too scared to. Since she loved the horror genre and desperately wanted to see this particular film, she had decided to see it come what may!

At the box office, she had of course been careful enough to ask for an aisle seat. Once seated, she looked around and noticed that the movie hall was almost empty. There was a couple in the last row at the back, and just a handful of people here and there. She was not very surprised. After all, this movie had been playing here for the past three weeks. Luckily for her, there was no one occupying her entire row. She smiled to herself as she thought of how this had worked out so perfectly!

Pretty soon, Aarohi had got engrossed in the movie. It was a murder mystery and just her kind of film. Tightly clenching her teeth to stop herself from screaming, she was totally caught up with the story line. The suspense and the eerie music rising suddenly to a crescendo just as the hand with the knife appeared were enough to scare the living daylights out of her. She was totally lost to the real world around her.

Sometime after the fourth murder (maybe an hour into the movie), she suddenly noticed something weird. Something was brushing against her arm lying on the handrest to her right. She turned her head ever so slightly in that direction, and noticed that it was a hairy arm - and it had a man’s body attached to it. Some man was actually occupying the seat next to hers. She was bemused. When and how had that happened? After all there had been no one next to her when she had seated herself. That meant this man must have moved from wherever he had been seated to the seat on her right.

In fact, the only reason Aarohi had noticed this guy now was the sly movement of his arm brushing against hers! In unconscious and immediate reaction, she jerked her arm off the arm rest, and leaned as far as she could to her left in a bid to get as far as she could from the creep. From the corner of her eye, she noted that he had a smirk on his face, while his eyes studiously stuck to the screen - as though he was not even aware of her.

She looked around as she tried to figure out what her next move should be. She noticed the couple sitting in the back row. The man and woman were totally immersed in what they were doing, not even looking at the screen. Nor were they aware of anything else happening in the darkened theatre. Locked in a tight embrace, their lips were glued together, and the man’s hand was burrowing under the woman’s saree palloo.

Aarohi moved her eyes away in embarrassment as she noticed that movement, and she tried to make herself disappear into the woodwork. Suddenly this guy next to her crossed his leg and apparently innocently touched his leg to hers. As she recoiled, he moved his leg back to its original position. This time he spread his legs wide apart, and raised his right hand to rub his chest … all the while smirking to himself. It took her a while to realize that he was making small circles around his chest! And it was another few minutes before she realized why! Gawsh - he was actually teasing her, indicating by his gestures that he would like to do that to HER!

In utter disgust, she jumped out of her seat and headed straight for the exit. Shuddering at this close encounter of the very shady kind, she vowed never ever to go see a movie on her own.

This story is based on a true event that the protagonist experienced eons ago!

While I see sense in what FG and Swati have to say, I agree with you too, such guys couldn”t care less and nobody is going to speak up for a girl, who had ventured all by herself to see a movie.

  7. Well written -a Gastly experience

re. changing her seat again, what if he”d hv followed her there too? she did the safest wisest thing SHE cud think of .. leaving the theatre! isnt it better to be safe than sorry?!

remember she was v young then and some girls canNOT get physical; ergo, no question of slapping.

  13. P Nayak says:

Why didn”t the girl just go to another seat since the theater was so empty anyways?

  14. Hmmm… I can empathize with the girl, and with the creep. I think there is such an afraid girl in all of us, and a creepy creep in all of us too. Interesting reminiscence… very visually described. But I do find my self wishing that the girl had just gone to another row and continued to enjoy her movie, without letting it disturb her too much. Warm Regards, Ghost
