1. Wives report they have been severely assaulted by husband 22 per 1000

In a study of 1000 happily married couples who have just celebrated their silver wedding anniversary, 22 wives report the above finding to an investigating social worker.

2. Wives report they have severely assaulted husband 59 per 1000

The above figures are obtained from 1000 female prisoners in jail for hitting back at their abusive alcoholic husbands.

3. Husbands report they have been severely assaulted by wives 32 per 1000

These figures are obtained from the husbands of the above �criminal� wives cited in #2.

4. Husbands report they have severely assaulted wives 18 per 1000

These figures are confirmative figures reported by the husbands of #1.

5. Husbands & wives both report wife has been assaulted 20 per 1000

Figures obtained from #1 and #4 in the police stn under the watchful eyes of policemen. You will note two scared women retract their earlier statement in their husbands� presence� while two additional husbands report true facts to the police.

6. Husbands & wives both report husband has been assaulted 44 per 1000

These are the figures obtained during police investigation of assaults, by unknown people, on couples who were enjoying loverly solitude in deserted country lanes. These assaults had robbery as the sole motive.

MADditions to the above figures�

* Women are three times more likely than men to use weapons in domestic violence.

Men do not need weapons - they use their hands (palms, fists, grips) and legs (kicks).

* Women initiate most incidents of domestic violence.

Women are at home waiting for the violence to happen to them.

* Women commit most child abuse and elder abuse.

While women in prison for violent behavior report mostly child or elder abuse, men are not restricted by such factors - they commit child abuse, elder abuse and woman abuse.

* Women hit their male children more frequently and more severely than they hit their female children.

These are the figures from 10 women in jail for child abuse. Men in similar situations were found not to distinguish between male and female children.

* Women commit most child murders and 64% of their victims are male children.

These are figures for 5 women on death row in USA. All of them took the shield of �PMS� as an excuse for their violent behaviour. Similar figures for the 85 men on death row have not been reported here.

* When women murder adults, the majority of their victims are men.

These figures are from women inmates of death row in Jhumritalaiya. All of them reported being lured away from their homes by offers of marriage and forced into prostitution by pimps. They had been living in red light area for years and being repeatedly raped by city men.

* Women commit 50% of spousal murders.

Of the 10 women in jail for murder, 5 were for spousal murders. They reported that they had been severely abused for decades by their husbands.

Figures for a similar study on the 500 men in jail for murder are not being released as they would affect gender harmony.

* Eighty-two per cent of all people have their first experience of violence at the hands of a woman.

These are true figures from a study of normal happy adult male and female Americans who were delivered a questionnaire about disciplining at home.

[Possible Truism: Out of 99,99,999 assault cases, a study finds that 99, 98,999 cases are assaults by men against women, children and the elderly. The remaining 1000 are by women against men.]

PostScript: The figures cited above were tossed at me by someone recently. They purport to be true figures of a study conducted in the US of A. The rejoinders given below each of these statistics are my own creations, and relate definitely to the Indian situation. I strongly feel that statistics based on data collated elsewhere should not be applied irresponsibly to other societies � and definitely not to India where so much violence has been directed and continues to be directed at women. I do not, nay cannot, even begin to imagine what the victims of domestic violence go through and it is wrong for people to use figures generated elsewhere about �violence against men� to try and negate what happens in our country.
