The Thinking Tree

llll

The Thinking Tree

Almost bare of leaves, this gnarled rough edged tree

Stood sentinel-like, to one side of the narrow, twisting path

As I walked past it, I didn’t quite notice it and walked on

Immersed, as I was, in my own deep thoughts!

Then something made me pause, and walk back to it

Going around it, I appreciated its unique form

I wondered what all it must have experienced

In its obviously very long life!

If I looked at it from one side of the path

It appeared to be heading straight towards the horizon

As if it couldn’t wait to end of its life

Perhaps it had been a life well lived?

While if I looked at it from the other side

It seemed as if it was eagerly heading

Towards a fresh new morrow, and

Perhaps to enjoy yet another new experience?

So much like me, is this old tree

I’ve lived, I’ve learned, I’ve even stumbled and fallen

Sometimes to get up and face a new stumbling block

But, more often, to carefully step over the next one!

This tree and I, we are both beings of the same kind

Its xylum and phloem, different - yet akin, to my blood vessels

I know it lives - perhaps, it thinks, and has learnt life’s lessons

All this living and learning, a waste when we both die!

  6. tanuj neogi says:

A thought provoking one opeing up a massive canvas of discussions. A lot may be said about this topic. I apprehend that 1000 characters would be far less than the required space to talk about it. Time is the supreme ruler of the universe. Life & death are the two sides of the same coin. Nothing, including even the stars, is immortal. Leave aside our little span of life. However nothing is wasted. It only gets transformed. Hope we”d discuss about it in future…

  7. nice one….i like your post

nice thoughts- but it not for end result that we all go thru the process of life.Life - keeps throwing its challenges and there is no way than to move forward. so we keep facing them , falling , jumping and crossing - often injured but more often with pride. SO keep moving

  14. wonderful.

  16. sarita singh says:

  17. Ravin says:

A very unique perspective. Rarely do we give these ancient observers more than a fleeting glance. But as you have rightly said, they are the true witnesses of time :-) Just loved it…

As far as our experience going waste - avid listeners can always ask ;-) the others - well, they can select the tougher option of stepping into the fire…

  18. Yes. it is a waste to us, when we die. However, neither living nor learning nor loving for that matter..are for any purpose other than the need for doing so naa? The idea is to derive pleasure out of the basic neccessary need of living learning n loving. Enough pleasure so that when one dies, one feels a sense of satisfaction for having lived, learned and loved as best as one could…and not longing for the same. :)
Waise there is an old song “young ones”… a line it it says ” And some day when the years have gone.. darling then we will teach the young ones of our own”

  19. Inder M VIG. says:

wonderful thought..great way to look at the existance and end…..but perhaps, truely said, all goes back nothing gets destroyed or wasted heheee,,mittee mittee mein mil jati hay,,i.e. wapis apnay ghar ..

  20. K B says:

the truth about life is that it is futile- just to bring more life…..

  21. No, I think nothing is wasted in this universe it just transforms into another shape, form etc. An end of one form leads us to the beginning of a new life or substance in a new form …. that’’s the truth if we all realise it I think we could get rid of the word called….”Worry”. What do you say?

  22. ……great thoughts….nice lines!!
