Make Your Own Arrangement and Move Around in Johannesburg

February 23, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

If you are looking forward to a holiday basking in the South African splendor, Johannesburg promises to be a great holiday choice. Simply avail the excellent international flights prices deal and land in the Or Tambo International airport and make the most of the South African holidays.

With the increasing popularity of Johannesburg as a popular holiday hotspot all over the world and the introduction of regular flights to Johannesburg, the city is waking up to the needs of the holidaymakers. The young and expansive city of Johannesburg is much like bustling Los Angeles, though somewhat lacks appropriate public transport. This often comes as a serious obstacle to the tourists who look forward to make the most of their Johannesburg holidays. To meet the growing demands, a second airport at Lanseria has been built which mostly handles the cheap flights to Johannesburg from Kulula. After learning that Johannesburg did not have much of a very well knit transport system, I made my own plans to explore the city at my own pace.

A Peep into the Public Transport of Johannesburg

With a somewhat chaotic transport, like the other South African cities, public transport is definitely not the best. Most of the residents use their own transport. When I booked myself in the hotel, I ensured they pick me up from the international airport. Most of the hotels have their own shuttle service, though you can also choose to avail the local minibus- called the ‘taxis’. However, note that these are taxis not in the western sense of the term- but is more of a small scale local bus service operating informally without any proper stops and timetables. They run across the city without any marks/numbers and are the cheapest form of transport in Johannesburg. The taxis are mostly used by the working population of the city. As a holidaymaker, it is definitely not the best form to transport to choose, unless you are extremely conversant with the routes and hand signs. I decided to avoid it.

Your Available Choice of Transport

You can choose from the car rentals and the bikes which remain the most popular way to move around the city- my preferred way of exploring the city! In fact, most holidaymakers prefer to avail the rental car service as the city’s entire transportation is based on private transportation. You will however need an international driver’s license to drive in Johannesburg along with 5 years of driving experience. Remember that you will have to call a taxi to your place and cannot hail one from the streets. While booking for my cheap airfares I started searching for the best car rentals that would make my moving around the city comparatively smooth and comfortable.

Public Buses

There are about 100 public buses plying on the roads of Johannesburg and will take you to the suburbs. These are again one of the cheapest modes of transportation. With excellent road infrastructure, you can also use the luxury buses to move around the cities.

Moving Around in Helsinki

February 23, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

The Finnish Capital is a modern uber chic city right on the heart of the Baltic Sea with plenty to offer to holidaymakers. The easy connectivity to the major parts of UK and Europe coupled with regular international air flights to Helsinki has made the city easily accessible for the common holidaymakers.

Helsinki recently has gained immense popularity with the international holidaymakers mainly because of the introduction of cheap plane fares from all the major cities of Europe. Getting around the city is a joy and the city also has an extremely well knit transport system which will help you explore the city at your own pace. The tram remains one of the most popular ways of moving around the city- the eco friendly way and hence the most preferred one.

If you are looking for to explore the city at your own pace, then the tram is the by far the best and the most economic choice that you can make. With more the 450 years of rich history and culture, Helsinki is full of contrasts and unique amongst the North European cities. Helsinki Region Transport or HSL runs the public transport all through the region encompassing Kirkkonummi and Kerava. The best part is that you can buy a day ticket and use it for all modes of public transport- metro, tram, bus and also the ferry. The day tickets allow you complete freedom and can be used for one week to move around the city. I would prefer the day ticket as this would help me save a lot while staying here.

Car Rentals and Taxi

The car rentals and the taxis are another popular mode of transport in the city. There are car rentals available in the airport which will take you the main city center. Taxis are also popular amongst the holidaymakers. While booking my cheap flights to Helsinki, I looked for car rentals to take me to the city hotel where I was putting up. Taxis are also easy to get and you will get then from the city center- however, it might be difficult to get one during the peak hours. While in Helsinki you are never too far from a taxi stand as they are conveniently spread across the city.

Why not Choose Biking and explore the City

I found this the most exciting way to explore and unravel the city. You will be amazed to know that Helsinki has 1200 kilometers of biking trail that will take you almost anywhere in the city. I took a free biking trail map available from the Tourist Information. When I was looking for my cheap airfares to Helsinki I looked up the biking trails and found them extremely exciting.

Explore the nearby Island- Take the Ferry

The day tickets will let you enjoy the ferry ride to the nearby islands. Brilliant views and a complete escapade from the hustle and bustle is what await you here. I wanted to visit the Helsinki Zoo and so decided to buy the day ticket for my ferry ride.

Enjoy exciting nightlife in Dusseldorf

February 23, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

Dusseldorf is among the most prosperous cities of Germany on the banks of the Rhine River in the western North Rhine-Westphalia region of the country. There are cheap international flights to Dusseldorf from every major city in Europe. It is a clean and exciting metropolis full of major international banks, industries and there are plenty of beautiful parks and walkways along the riverside as well.

Exploring Dusseldorf

I was lucky to get cheap airfares to Dusseldorf as I had planned my holiday weeks in advance. As soon as I reached there, I decided to move around and explore the many sights that the city has to offer. I visited parts of Altstadt or the Old Town and marveled at the 16th century Gothic City Hall and 13th century St. Lambertis Church. There are plenty of museums including the K20, a contemporary black glass museum that I chanced to visit.

Restaurants worth a visit

One evening I also dined at the city’s most historic restaurant the Zum Schiffchen that has attracted noblemen and famous writers alike over the years. I tried and highly recommend their sumptuous wursts and schnitzels. Another restaurant worth a visit is the Rheinturm Top 180 Restaurant that is a revolving restaurant serving international cuisine located on the top floor of Dusseldorf’s tallest building. I tried some exquisite dishes like salmon with lime crust and delicious lamb with rosemary potatoes while enjoying an aerial view of the city.

Entertainment and Nightlife

While booking my airline tickets I browsed through several online travelogues that highly recommended the happening nightlife of Dusseldorf. So I walked to Altstadt the cultural hub of Dusseldorf from my hotel to explore the numerous taverns serving the famous local semi sweet brew, Altbier. The whole atmosphere in the evenings turns rather boisterous and lively, but it’s all taken in good spirit. A highly recommended and must visit was the quaint Bräuerei Schumacher brewpub that served its own beer and I tried their version of Altbier, the Schumacher Alt. Two other pubs serving their home brewed beer are Brauerei im Füchschen, and Bräuerei zum Schlüssel, both of which also serve authentic German food.

Enjoy music and concerts

After landing in Dusseldorf by cheap international flights I would recommend a visit to the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker or the Tonhalle for those interested in watching musical symphonies and concerts by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra performs at least every month and the tickets cost around $32 to $114. To catch some good German plays I was asked to check out the superb drams being staged at Schauspielhaus on Gustav-Gründgens-Platz usually between June to September where the tickets cost $18 to $57. Live music is played at the Bei Tono on Königsallee every day from noon to 3 am and guests can also take part in playing the piano.

After a few rounds of excellent beer I hit the dance floor at the most happening dance spot of Altstadt the Stahwerk on Ronsdorferstrasse that had a very hip and trendy crowd and some great music. The cover charge is $7.70 to $23 and it is open Friday and Saturday. With so many activities to keep one busy, I would highly recommend that you book international flight to Dusseldorf right away.
