Learning a lesson from the street

March 28, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

I did not have much knowledge about Amsterdam till I went there last month as a part of a European trip. The trip was a package tour arranged by a tour operator in our city. They have offered a month’s trip to various destinations in Europe. Every arrangement including travel, food and accommodation were taken care by them and their charge was a lump sum amount for all these facilities. This had reduced our job as we did not have to waste our time in enquiring about international air flights and in bargaining to get cheap flight deals. We were about 40 members in the group and except me all are families. Still they never made me to feel alone and gave me a good company. We visited many places in Europe and finally reached in Amsterdam.

After arriving there, the first thing we did was to check in to the hotel that has been reserved for us. As I was alone, they have reserved me a room separately. In the evening, I befriended the room boy who came with my evening drinks. I tried to get maximum information from him about the city. The main attraction in the city is the canals that have been built in the 14th century. They are declared as heritage sites by UNESCO. Then there are many heritage buildings including the Old Church, which has been built in the 14th century. It houses the oldest stock exchange in the world too.

I was really surprised to know these things. I never took Amsterdam as an important city and I never consider it as a tourist destination. According to him, more and more visitors are coming to the city every year and there are many flights to Amsterdam from all parts of the world.

Next day morning I have conveyed all the Information I have gathered to our guide and he told me that all those places are in our list. He really got wondered and he did not conceal his shock. He asked me how I could get all those information. Though it is possible to gather information through internet, it will not be in details as a local person describe. My descriptions were in details as I collected it from my room boy who is a local person.

When our bus passed through the city, I got a different picture of Amsterdam. When we went pass through a residential area, I have seen many old style houses along with modern homes. It was not a blending of culture or art; I felt it as a blending of times. I really enjoyed it.

While coming back to our room, we have stopped in front of a large shopping mall. Ladies of our group went inside for purchases and some men followed them. However, I preferred to be out on the lawn. I sat there as if I did not have to do anything. There was an old building in front of me on the opposite side of the road. It seems to remind me that, you can go any further and you can achieve new heights and new friends, still one day you will have to look back and then you can see only some old faces.

I decided to visit Amsterdam once again as it taught a philosophy of life. Anyway, it will not cost me more as cheap airfares to Amsterdam are readily available.

Following the Footsteps of Mahatma the Apostle of Non-Violence

March 28, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

Whenever I hear about a terrorist attack or war, I remember Mahatma Gandhi. As Albert Einstein told once, he is such a nice person that the coming generations will never believe that he lived on this earth. The great soul who taught us the strength of love and nonviolence has inspired me always. That is why I got thrilled when I got a chance to visit Delhi on an official tour. India has become one of the largest markets in the world with a large purchasing capacity. That is why none of the multinationals want to skip Delhi from their business map. Even my company also does not want to do that. My mission was to conduct a survey before launching our products there.

Being an official trip, I did not struggle much. We had people to manage our itinerary and book our flight deals. They negotiated well and were able to get airline tickets for cheap airfares . Everything went according to the plans and I landed at the Delhi airport. Being the capital city of India it is well connected with all parts of the world and almost all major airlines operate flights to Delhi from different locations. The city at par with any other major cities in the world and all modern facilities are available here. From the moment I landed here I smelt a good future for my company. The market is vast and the people do not mind to spend on purchases.

My official work went according to the plans and there is nothing special to mention about it. The day of my life came on Sunday. Till then in my free time I had visited the famous Red Fort, India Gate, etc in the evenings. Sunday was a holiday and I too did not have much work. So I slept till ten in the morning and after getting fresh I went to Rajghat, the place, where Mahatma Gandhi rests in peace. There were many people there. By the introduction of cheap flights to Delhi, more and more people are visiting Delhi nowadays. Delhi is a part of the famous golden triangle of India which consists of Agra, where the Tajmahal the monument of eternal love situates and Jaipur, the desert city.

Anyhow, the most attractive thing in Delhi for me is the presence of Mahatma. This was the place where he spent most of his life and taught us to love each other and to hate violence. I went inside Rajghat. I sat there near the place where he was cremated and thought to myself, here lays the person who held the people of a large country in his hands. He did not have physical strength. He was not an expert in using weapons. He never gave hot speeches. However, he knew what love is and expressed it in the right way.

He conveyed to millions of people through his heart and people responded to his unconditional love. I felt like acquiring a sort of energy from the space there. I felt his presence near me. I felt him telling me to say no to war and violence. When I returned from there with a heavy heart, I decided to purchase international tickets for Delhi and visit Rajghat again.

The City that Built on the Ruins

March 22, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

“Phoenix is a legendary bird that takes rebirth from its own ashes”. There was no doubt for Lord Darrell Duppa while giving a name to the city that has been built on the ruins of an ancient civilization. He firmly fixed the name as Phoenix. Harry and I were walking through the long corridors of Phoenix Arts Museum. I was in Phoenix last month in connection with an art exhibition. I used to visit many such exhibitions as a part of my course. As, I have to bear all the expenditures for such journeys, I used to go for cheap airfares. In any journey, the major chunk of the expenditure will be for air flights. Food and accommodation etc can be adjusted, if we can compromise of the quality and the facilities.

http://museumsatnight.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/shifting-boundaries-pv.jpg

When I heard about the exhibition here, I started enquiring about the city and the cheapest ways to reach here. Being one of the important cities, almost all companies are operating flights to Phoenix. There are many domestic cheap airfares flights too to Phoenix from other parts of US. After reaching here, I checked in a cheap hotel. City offers all modern facilities to the visitors.

http://www.aace.org/conf/Cities/Phoenix/CANYON721.jpg

As there are two more days to start the exhibition, I planned to go for a sightseeing trip throughout the city. Being a fine arts enthusiast, my first destination was Phoenix Arts Museum. There I met Harry, who is a professor in the university college. When he came to know that I have come here for the exhibition, he got interested in me and agreed to spend some time with me. He was narrating the history of the city while we were walking through the long corridors of the museum.

http://www.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_full_width/hash/Old%20Phoenix.jpg

“It has a history of more than 1000 years. Earlier Hohokam people used to live here. It was a great civilization and they built up a good city here. Unfortunately during the late 14the century and early 15th century, the area faced severe draughts and then it followed by severe floods. Thus the great civilization came to an end.”

http://halongbooking.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Phoenix-Cruises-Header.jpg

When he stopped for a while I was thinking about the fate of people who lived here at that time. They too might have thought that they are safe, and they will live ever. They too might have amazed wealth and constructed buildings, believing their younger generation will lead a happy life. However, the destiny was something else in stock for them. Even though there are many examples in history to point out the meaninglessness of physical pleasures and wealth, we are still spoiling our life behind that.

International air flights to Phoenix is available always. So, this time too we are
expecting a good turnout for the exhibition. I think, you too might
have come in any of the cheap airfares to Phoenix. ” He told me
while saying bye. He promised me that he will make arrangements for
my visit to the exhibition.

Back in my hotel room, I was thinking about the people who had to leave all their belongings and had to surrender in front of the might of the nature. Still, the determination of human mind can construct many cities on the ruins of such civilizations.

Budapest - The City with a rich past

“Budapest has so many things to claim. World’ second oldest underground railway is in Budapest. It houses around 80 geothermal springs and world’s largest thermal water cave system. Second oldest synagogue is there.” Professor continues with his description about Budapest, which he had visited recently as a part of a delegation. They had gone there as a part of cultural exchange between Hungary and our nation. Since it is a government sponsored program, all airline deals have been completed by the concerned government agency. They were provided with cheap airfares to Budapest. Their stay and other connected things in that city was the responsibility of Hungary government.

http://metromaps.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/under.jpg

“There may not be any other cities in the world that has seen so much of turbulent history”. Professor continued with great enthusiasm. He was so thrilled to get a chance to visit the place about which he takes classes, that his joy knew no bounds. Though this city has become a major business center in Europe, it still retains its cultural heritage. It has a history dated back to the Celtic settlements in Stone Age and Bronze Age. Then Romans and later Turks came here. It witnessed both the world wars and suffered a lot and came under the rule of communists.  When the people revolted against the communist regime, the Soviets came there. Thus, this city has witnessed a lot of events that decided the fate of world in the past. After giving a short brief about the history of Budapest he turned to us.

http://digitalsketches.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/p1020953.jpg

“There are a number of Flights to Budapest. Many companies are operating cheap flights to Budapest. All of you should visit the place once. Without visiting Budapest, you cannot be a complete history student because; it is the place where history sleeps.” He was tempting us.

http://www.budapest-tourist-guide.com/image-files/heritage_01.jpg

There are many places of historical importance in that city. As professor started describing its myriad attractions one by one, we all started dreaming about visiting that places once in our lifetime. We are not sure whether we will get a chance or not. Still we are hoping as there are many flights operating to this city hence there will be no difficulty in getting cheap international tickets .

http://aperture.adfero.co.uk/Image/Autocrop/14044552?w=580&h=300

Apart from a historical city, it is also a thriving business center in central Europe. Electrical, mechanical and pharmaceutical industries contribute major share to its economy. It has being selected as the 7th most idyllic place for living by the Forbes. Though it has a history of invasions and attacks, presently it offers a chance to live a peaceful life and it attracts many tourists here.

http://stephanielmason.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/dsc04860.jpg

As our professor concluded, “When the communists took over the rule, the heritage structures like royal palace were destroyed. They built various structures to showcase their victory. Though these structures are still there communism has been almost faded away from Budapest. However, the things may change again as this city cannot live without incidents and happenings.

Singapore Dollars, Souvenir of a failed Love

March 07, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

Joseph, my friend is an architect by profession. He was a singer during our college days and also a good painter. These talents might have helped him in his profession too. Anyway, now, he is one of the most renowned architects in our city. Whenever we meet in the weekends, we used to discuss a lot of subjects other than our profession over a peg or two. During one of our weekend meetings, I have noticed some Singapore dollars, kept inside his valet. My query about it brought Singapore into our discussions.

He reminded me about his Singapore trip, when he got a chance through one of the lucky draws offered by a company to promote their sales. The prize he won was a free trip to Singapore. I remembered him inviting me too at that time. He will get his plane tickets free as it is a part of the prize he won, but I will have to spend for my international tickets . That is why I did not accept his invitation. He pursued me to approach the same airlines and ask for more airline discount. I did not do that. He left alone.

http://cache.virtualtourist.com/4/4043160-Local_market_Singapore.jpg

Now, let us hear the story in his words. “As I was coming out of the airport, I have seen a young lady with a placard in her hand. My name was written on that. I approached her. When I proved my identity, she introduced me as my host appointed by the tour operator who had arranged that tour. We went to the hotel.”

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JVd7sF-OTfk/TFf67_geG-I/AAAAAAAAACk/xXe6lecb9Wo/s1600/Nasi+lemak+web.JPG

“On the way to hotel, she gave me a brief about Singapore and its culture. It is really a mixture of English, Indian and Chinese culture.” My friend continued. “The city is thickly populated and as she told me that after many airlines have introduced cheap flights to Singapore, the number of visitors has increased enormously.

http://www.herworldplus.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/featured_image_640xfull_height/TAIWAN350.jpg

In the next four days, they have visited many places in Singapore. The alluring smile and the way she talks really induced him. He confesses that he felled for her. Though he has an artistic heart, he is not a daring one. He feared to express the feelings towards her. And on the last day, she came to see off him. On the way to airport he stopped the car for some purchasing. He paid for it. The vendor returned the balance amount to her and she in turn handed it to him.

http://images.cdn.fotopedia.com/flickr-33143829-image.jpg

These dollars are the same one which she handed over to him. Though he promised her on that day he will purchase cheap airfares to Singapore and visit again to see her, he could not make it out due to his busy schedule. He is still keeping those Singapore dollars as a souvenir of a love which he could not express.
