Johannesburg - A City Known For its Unique Culture

June 19, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

My father has business that is spread all over the world. His company has offices in Johannesburg as well. Since he has work in many regions of the world, he has to travel a lot. This time he decided to take us along with him. We were really were the moon about this trip. My brother and I started planning for the same. Our father’s agent told us that these days, many cheap airfares are also available. Since airline prices are going down these days, it has become affordable to visit all these wonderful destinations. Many flights to Johannesburg is available these days like British Airways, Jet Airways.

Soon the day came when we were off to this beautiful city. Besides a wide array of scenic attractions, the destination is also known for its rich culture. The history, tradition and culture of Africa can be witnessed here in its truest form. The city welcomed us with open arms with its lively atmosphere and jovial people. Our father hired a well informed guide for us so that we could enjoy the city with gay abandon. Our guide was a very knowledgeable person who not only took us too all popular tourist attractions of the place but also told us a lot about the culture of the city.

To know more about the city’s culture, he took us to the Apartheid Museum where we glimpsed incredible information about the long painful period of Apartheid marred with violence, oppression and atrocities. Another prominent museum in the city is Johannesburg Art Gallery where art forms from all over the world are exhibited. Our guide also took us to South African Museum of Rock Art where one can trace the origin of humanity. This museum was really interesting and I found answers to my several questions. We saw many visitors thronging this place as these days availability of cheap flights to Johannesburg has made it easier for them to take up travel.

Lion Park was also one of the places we visited. We were thinking that it must be just like a zoo where lions can be seen in cage. But we were sadly mistaken as in we did came across several lions but in their natural glory welcoming us. This was my first brush with wild life and for a moment I was completely stunned to see these mighty beasts so close to me. Beside lions, there were several other animals in the park.

In the evening we set about on a little shopping spree. Our guide took us to the Sunday flea market. We could see the culture of the place at close quarters. The attitude of people, their spontaneous smiles and joie de vivre was infectious. We bought several handmade souvenirs. Rosebud is the place where this mall is located on its roof. We really enjoyed a lot shopping here for simple trinkets. We observed the everyday life of the vendors and hawkers at close quarters. We also indulged in some haggling over prices at Oriental Plaza and came across a new facet of the natives. Cheap tickets to Johannesburg made it possible for us to see this wonderful destination.

The city that is built from the ashes

April 27, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

Nassau, the capital city of Commonwealth of Bahamas has been known as Charles Town and it has been burned down to ashes by Spanish in 1684. Later it has been rebuilt and renamed Nassau in 1695. By the end of 1713, this island has become the heaven of pirates and many pirates have ruled this island as their private kingdom in the next few years. Then it has been captured by British and it has been brought to the present situation by the British. Even after independence it remained in the British Commonwealth. The history about the city I learned during my last trip. It was a well planned trip and I got enough time for airline deals, bargaining for cheap airfare tickets etc.

Presently the city is well connected to the rest of the world and there a number of flights to Nassau from different parts of US, Canada and Caribbean islands. I was lucky to get one of those cheap airfares to Nassau and reached here. The tropical climate and the beautiful sceneries made it a he4aven for tourists and the economy of the city is mainly based on tourism. Besides, the busy Port of Nassau also contributes a lot to the economy of the city.

Bay street thoroughfare and the Woodes Roger’s Walk parallel to the bay are the main attractions here. The bay street is a busy place for shopping also. Most of the people are coming here for shopping mainly in apparels and other accessories. As the international tickets to Nassau are easily available the number of visitors has increased in the recent past.

Cable beach, which is also called as the hotel district of Nassau has many hotels those extend their service to different classes of people. From the most luxurious hotels you can see even very common hotels also that cater to the needs of the middle class people.

There was huge crowd on all beaches in the evenings. People engaged in various recreational activities in the beaches include foreigners too. There were many vendors in the beach and were selling eatables and beverages to the visitors. The city mainly lives on the income from the tourists and the suburbs have middleclass residential areas where most of the people are engaged in activities related to tourism.

Pirates Museum is another attraction here. It will take us to a world which we have seen only in our imaginations or in some films. The weapons and other accessories used by the pirates in different periods are on display here.

A week in the beaches enjoying the cool breeze and the music of the waves passed very fast. I never felt as if one week was over. The day came when I am supposed to leave this beautiful city. I had my last walk through the Bay Street and purchased some items as a souvenir of my tour. Then I rushed back to the airport. Before bidding adieu, I have taken a decision to visit this city once again.

Jamaican tour extension

April 27, 2012 By: Calvin Moore Category: Destination

Whenever you visit Jamaica, you can not say that your tour is completed without visiting Montego Bay. With its beautiful beaches and the luxurious resorts built on the coast line it attracts a large number of visitors nowadays. It also has become a second home for most of the rich Jamaicans as well as for the rich from US and Europe. I had to catch one of the last minute flights to this city as it was not in my original tour plan. Though I have approached some travel agents in Kingston for flight tickets in cheap airfares , almost all flights to Montego Bay was full. Still I managed a seat in one of them and went there.

After checking into my hotel, the first thing I did was to visit Doctor’s Cave Beach club. I came to know about it even before coming here and I saw a large number of tourists there enjoying different activities. For years it has been continuing as the most favored tourist spot in the city.

Being the second largest city of Jamaica, Montego Bay too has rich outlook with a number of skyscrapers and luxury hotels. Most of the business happens here is tourism related and hotels and restaurants are making a good profit here. Every year the number of visitors is increasing and the authorities are keen on providing sufficient infrastructure facilities to the visitors. Almost all major airlines are operating flights to Montego Bay and thus it is well connected with the rest of the world.

Rose Hall Golf Club is another attraction here and the people belong to the upper strata of the society is frequenting this club to play golf. According to the club authorities even people from Asia and Europe frequent here to enjoy the game.

Throughout the coastline there are a number of resorts. Most of them are newly built and in some resorts they have left the old structures untouched. This gives the resorts a special look and makes them more attractive.

The city has become a hot favorite with film makers also. Many Hollywood blockbusters including some James Bond movies had been made here. The long beaches and the shallow waters favor shooting of films.

The evenings I spend in the busy streets for shopping. On both the sides there were many small retail counters who are aiming the business from the tourists. Various handicraft items, dresses and clothes were sold here. In between these shops you can see a number of food courts selling traditional food. When the airlines started cheap international tickets to Montego Bay, more and more middle class people started coming here and these small food courts serve to their needs.

Even though I spent almost a fortnight here, I did not get satisfaction. The urge is there inside me to visit the city once again. As cheap tickets to Montego Bay are available it is not going to be a costly affair. I hope that I can visit the city once again soon.
