The Teachers’ Day is celebrated today all over India. The birth day of a great teacher, late Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, the ex-President of India, is being immortalised this day.
In the contemporary world of today, when knowledge is sought from multiple sources and it multiplies every moment, the concept of Guru, the Teacher, must undergo serious change for the better.
There can’t be a single teacher who can offer multifarious answers ,or even the ’sources’ of answers, to the high-tech pupils that we encounter today.Every one is supposed to gather knowledge from countless sources viz.books, CDs, films, TV, Print media, discources from many spiritual and technical gurus, school and college teachers, colleagues and friends etc.It is difficult quite often to credit a single individual with the title of guru.
The concept of guru, therefore, stands changed.
The GURU , therefore, must be a plural connotation rather than as ’singular’ thus far.The importance of learning and the teachers can never be undermined. All the way from the first teacher, mother, to the authors of the development of various scientific, technical and spiritual thoughts, one is grateful to everyone who has contributed to the synthesis of onen’s mental makeup.
The existence of singular gurus, however, may not be ruled out completely. Some habitually busy persons may not find enough time and opportunity to exert themselves in getting the proper knowledge for themselves from different sources.Such persons may require ‘consultants’ for their spiritual or social guidance at one place. They must find some one who can provide the needed authoritative guidance at one place, honourary or paid. They may continue to have DEEKSHA and bank upon that single individual guru for most of their guidance.
But, majority of people will require the concept of GURU to be revised and a sense of plurality to be included in it.
