COMMANDING HAPPINESS

September 18th, 2009

UNHAPPY  PEOPLE  CONVINCE  YOU  TO  BE  MISERABLE

(Some Questions and their Answers according to me.)

How can I get inspired? My Boss heaps abuse on me daily.                                                                                                                   One can give only from what one has. When you understand this, you will be kind. You cannot expect a scorpion to kiss you. People around, with their hurt bodies, create pain for others. Their minds are so noisy that they create noise. Quite often, we hold on to the pain for a week, a month and create a hurt body in us. We cannot shake it loose from our memory. The hurt body starts eating our joy. It starts reliving the experience of abuse and creates a mountain out of a molehill. We have a choice to nurture abuse within us, reliving those moments or we can simply shake it off and move on.

Why do we suffer pain by recreating it moment to moment ?             Thought creates energy. If thought is negative, then energy is negative and that creates pain. A hurt body looks at the world through pain. A hurt body will try its best to sustain pain. It is a matter of survival. So, it loves to attract pain and sustain pain. It will use logic to protect it. Look at unhappy people, they will convince you to be miserable.

All that you can do is to create a bliss body in you. There are five layers in you : the physical body, the pranic body, the breath body, the mental body, the intellectual body and the bliss body.

All these layers in us have energies. It is in potential form. Just as there is latent fire in wood and by rubbing the wood it is invoked. In the same way you have to awaken the physical body through exercise, yoga, dance and a balanced diet. Keep the body alive and enthusiastic. You will then kindle a happy energy through the body.

The pranic or breath body has to be awakened. Breathe deeply by doing pranayama and find a different kind of joy surfacing in you. Shallow breathing creates lower energy field while deep breathing enhances one’s aliveness.

The mental body can be awakened if you keep your mind calm. A calm mind has a different joy ; a noisy mind is an avenue for energy leakage. When your intellect is open and receptive, yet another dimension of blissful energy arises. One who is open and receptive is always learning. That’s why children learn very fast. In deep sleep, the bliss body opens up naturally. In the waking state, if one is commited to be happy and learns to look at life as a celebration, the bliss centre will be awakened.

Could opening these five bodies help improve a martial relationship ?                                                                                              If we are depleted, there is leakage of energy. We then try to draw energy from our partner. Each one starts sapping the other’s energy and we become dependant on the other. Both feel miserable. Then you become possesive. When there is resistance to restriction of freedom, the partner feels rejected and dejected. You wait to settle scores at the opportune time. There is a war of roses.

However, if you have tapped all the five layers within you, you will overflow with joy. You will not sap the energy of the other as you are overflowing. You will not be dependant on the other but you can learn to be interdependent, then there is a sense of belonging. The relationship will reach new heights when you open your body, prana, mind, intellect and bliss centres.

EFFORT AND EFFECT

August 11th, 2009

Enjoy The Effort No Matter What The Effect

We have many desires and targets. We don’t always get what we want. Some of us are happy with what we get, and others remain dissatisfied.Still others don’t give up ; they keep trying. Which approach would be the right one ?

I would recommend another approach. You can have a desire.Put in your best effort to fulfil it.But make sure you enjoy the effort rather than its fruits. There are those who make the effort grumbling and are happy only when the desire is achieved. There are others who exhaust themselves making the effort to such a degree that they have no strength or enthusiasm left to enjoy the fruit. My method is : Enjoy the effort no matter what the effect.

My approach is to celebrate the march towards the destination. If the destination is reached,we will be happy.Even if it is not reached, nobady can take away the sense of thrill at having run the race, the delicious fatigue felt along the whole body. My happiness is derived not from reaching a goal, but from the struggle I wage as part of my attempt at reaching it.I am engaged in teaching the students now.Suppose I feel I will be happy only if they gave me a thundering ovation when I conclude my lecture. That means I am not fully enjoying my teaching, rather,my mind is set on a particular goal. That very concern may prevent me from giving my best to my teaching and thus act as a barrier to my attaining the goal.

Playing football is one kind of joy, winning is another kind. The problem is we identify joy exclusively with winnng. Classical musicians(like Pd.Hariprasad Chourasia) are so absorbed in their performance that for all practical purposes, they are unmindful of the audiance, the applause at climatic points, or the money they will receive from the organisers at the end. What they enjoy is their involvement in bringing the art alive, not the end result in the form of ovation or payment. So enjoy the process.Enjoy the travel.Enjoy the endeavour.

Ensure that you will be working smart, not just hard.Don’t go fishing in the bathtub.Don’t try to work up lather in a running stream.Instead, fish in a stream, and work up lather in a bathtub. Set and evaluate your goals, estimate the quantum and quality of efforts to be invested in attaining the goals, calculate the ROI (return on investment)quotient carefully, and then,if you are convinced the ratio is satisfactory,go ahead and work towards your goals. That is smart work, intelligent effort.

Failure is a fact of life.In all competative contexts as in sports, for example, one side has to lose.So why not enjoy the effort rather than exult at success or mope at failure ? I think it is better mental discipline to celebrate the success rather than brood on the losses. It is definately a healthier strategy for the future for anyone wishing to continue in competative endeavours.

There is also a spiritual lesson in every failure.Failures are necessary to remind people of their essential human vulnerabilities. An unbroken string of successes can create pride and a sense of invincibility about oneself in a high achiever. Remember the bragging,”I am the greatest” that comes out of the mouths of wrestlers and boxing stars ? As the common maxim goes, such pride always precedes a great fall. Surendering to the Lord is an act of bhakti — devotion, and surrender happens only in a spirit of humility.

IPL  Stands  For  Infinite  Possibilities  League

This Indian Premier League Season 2, cricket lovers got their hearts’ fill of the glory of T20 cricket. The joy of cricket remained undiminished. And, yet all the revitting drama of the sport could not obscure the irony of the final few days of the IPL’s second season. the finalists were a surprise. And the winner was best known till then only as one of the two worst teams in the last season’s IPL.

Here, then, were two teams that seemed to live the Bible’s line : “…. the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong… nor yet favour the men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” How did two teams–reputedly losing teams–led by two retired cricketers, get covered in glory ? How did the turn-around happen ?

Adam Gilchrist had reportedly written on a piece of paper that his team, the Deccan Chargers, would win the final by six wickets, which it eventually did. Gilchrist said he had a strong hunch. He had invoked the power within to come to his and his team’s aid.

Writer William Ward once said :”The optimist lives on the peninsula of infinite possibilites ; the pessimist is stranded on an island of prepetual indecision.” Savants tell us that the peninsuls is in the depths of our being, while the island is on the top of our mind. They are also aware of the music of our existence playing on that peninsula. It is a music that resonates with the universal abilities within each of us, telling us that we all play in our own IPL.,the Infinite Possibilites League. It is a music that led a hearing impaired and visually challenged Helen Keller to inspire others like her, a Mohandas to be a mahatma and a Barack Obama to make the journey all the way to the White House as US president.

What does it take to play and win in the Infinite Possibilites League ?    The three magic words : Recognise, Visualise, Realise. Recognise the limitations being enforced on us by our conditioning and labels, that our external reality is constantly reinforcing the limitations. Recognise also that there exists within us inteligence and energy that draws from an infinite source.

To visualise our goal is to focus on it. When we see that a goal is a reflection of our purpose on Earth. We move into communion with it. In stillness and silence the past drops away, with its labels and negativity, and the present shines forth. The music plays clear on the peninsula. That is what Gilchrist heard and knew that it was possible to emerge triumphant.

The third strategy is to realise our vision. Writing down our goal is the first step ; we are making a self fulfilling prophecy. The action then flows, taking us with it. Before that tough semi-final,which the Daredevils were expected to win easily, Gilchrist listened to his own self, recorded what he heard and brought to life the recording. The impossible became possible.

In her Oscar acceptance speech in 1984, Shirley Maclaine said,” Films and life are like clay, waiting for us to mould it. And when you trust your own insides and that becomes achievement,it’s a kind of principle that seems to me is at work with everyone. God bless that principle. God bless that potential that we all have for making anything possible if we think we deserve it. I deserve this.

Gilly certainly did.

THE ART OF EATING

August 31st, 2008

Dear Friends,as I entered Dr.Jayaram Soni’s clinic, I was taken over by the serene atmosphere, and I asked him the secret and he said with a smile ” Food for thought”. I asked him about food that can give mental peace. He said,” that’s something every one wants to know, so let us discuss this in detail.”

As per Dr. Soni, If you eat right, good health will surely be yours, and how satvik food can work wonders.

EATING IS A PLEASURE — We all seem to know this, but we ought to remember that we should all eat tot live and not vice versa.Whenever we chew food 22 times before swallowing it, it becomes sweet and is easily digested, especially the carbohydrates. And when digestation is easy, there is very little chance of fat accumalation.Freshly cut fruits and vegetables provide the best nutrition.

TIME  IT  RIGHT — It’s best to eat before sunset. Seems far fetched ? Read the logic to believe it. If you eat early, the food will be digested before you sleep. This means that the brain gets enough sugar, ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep. So, you will rise early with a fresh mind. If you eat early after a good exercise session, you are bound to have an early lunch, leading to a much quicker dinner. If you eat late, you tend to eat fast and the problems of indigestation and gas begin. So, if not before sunset, try eating at least 3 hours before you retire for the day.

AN ANIMAL’S INSTINCT — There are four animal instincts — desire for food, sex, and sleep and the fear of death. Desire of food is a tricky instinct. Initially, you think about food, then you develop a desire to have a specific food and when you don’t get it, you are angry and if you get it, you become greedy and eat it really fast. That’s the catch, this is very short-lived pleasure and we need to understand how to control our mind and the urge to devour.

LESS IS MORE — Deepak Chopra, the lifestyle guru, once fed a few well-to-do and poor people with a balanced diet. On conducting a test, it was learnt that those who were expected to be well fed were defifient in vitamin B12. Surprised ? well that was because if the body is starved, it makes the most of what it gets and that’s why the poor people fared better at this test.

STRIKING A BALANCE — (PART 2)

June 22nd, 2008

When unnecessary thoughts pile up,they become pockets of energy. When negative thoughts pile up they seed negative attitude, enforcing negative thoughts. These in turn super-impose energy on the objects of thought, making them appear negative. The influences that are created in life,be they in a form of war, politics, violence, are the result of the influence of negative energy that either becomes real or super-imposed.

When your immune system is weak you are prone to disease.Similarly, when your psycological immune system is weak you are prone to negative influences. A negative thought requires no effort. It comes from the lower mind that is mechanical. Noble thoughts have to come from the higher mind that is more conscious and magnetic.

A faulty attitude injures and harms us. We end up making wrong connections. And when we are not proceeding in the right direction, we suffer the consequences.

There is male energy in the female and female energy in the male.Since we are progencies of both genders, we have in us both male and female energies. They have to be in harmony for us to be able to function in a way that gives us the right direction.

When you create an external harmony, you create an internal harmony also. By loving a man outside, you love the male energy in you. When you hate a woman outside, a very important part of you, the internal  female energy is also dwarfed and injured.

In everyone of us there is both a teacher and a student. Our centre is a teacher teaching us  in the language of silence, in the language of purity. The student in us should learn to listen to the teaching. When we do injustice to an external teacher, we are doing injustice to a part of ourselves. By respecting both a student and a teacher outside, we respect something in us.

When there is right attitude, the wisest connection is made. For objective consciousness should include the subject, too.

When awareness is completely balanced, communicating with the outside world is instantaneous and automatic. It happens with the touch of thought. Balance, peace, and joy are the fruit of a successful life. It starts with recognising your talents and finding ways to serve others by using them.

ADAPT BUT DON’T BEND

June 7th, 2008

Human Adaptability is a wonderfully amazing thing. We adapt to almost everything from birth to death to adjust about anything in between. We may grieve, pine, be shocked, heartbroken, or convinced things will never be the same again - and yet, life goes on. Tears give way to smiles, shock to compromise and refusal to a grudging acceptance….

The wistfulness regarding the loss of the little things of life can almost be as painful as the bigger losses, and yet we adapt to every circumstance — most often, because we have no choice, but sometimes because we choose to move on. The comfort of childhood, sticky sweeness of twisted candies, the peaceful quiet of the school church, whispered nothings between friends, Mom’s warmly scented hug at the doorway, the firat meeting of lovers’ hands — all are there still. I’m sure, but we have adapted ourselves to outgrow them.

Then there are the things we cannot always do much about. The loss of loved ones, cruelty around us, crimes of passion and hatred ( the mind boggles at the cruelty of cold-hearted murder — could a parent ever kill his or her own child ? Impossible ! Or a human being kill and chop another into 300 pieces !!?) And yet, give it a few days and the mind starts adapting to and accepting as a reality even the most horrifying crimes.

Marrying a lover and watching him change into an unknown stranger, or marrying a stranger and growing to love him as your own over the years — what more can you say about the power of human adaptability ? There are stories of people who have risen from the depths of misery, rebuilt their lives and achived phenomenal success. Had they not adapted to thier circumstances when they were down and out,had they not held on and bidded their time, they would have certainly missed out on the success awaiting them round the corner. One hears of earthquake victims who survived for days under the debris, long afte rescue teams had given up hope, through sheer adaptability and perseverance.

From success to failure and back to success again, Amitabh Bachchan’s is a story of amazing adapatability, where from a struggling artiste to superstar to politician to failed businessman, proud father and yet again bach to an amazing success story — he moulded himself to every circumstance. He adapted to life as it came to him, accepting or giving up friends and acquantances, riches and success as life’s cards were dealt out to him. The only thing he never did was give up on life ;he held on to faith with determination.

Indeed, humans are biologically built to be immensely adaptable to varying kinds of environment. After several millions of years as other species got extinct, humans are still going strong. Adaptability is defined as ” the ability of an organism to survive significant changes in its environment, spread to new habitats, and come up with novel solutions to its sorroundings.” Human intelligence enables us to own knowledge and make an adaptive use of that knowledge, especially in dealing with unpredicted events.

However, we do need to distinguish between adaptability for the sake of survival and moving on, and a compromise made because one isn’t strong enough to stand up and fight back. The poicy of adapting to circumstances can only be good if inteligence and survival dictate it.

But, what if the compromise demanded means accepting something that is unfair, something that revolts against your very being, goes against your spirit ?

Adapting to the instability of environments is one thing, but using adaptability as an excuse to give in to samething that is unfair or unacceptable quite another. Whereas, the first works to our advantage because it is the outcome of intelligent observation and an analysis of circumstances, the second can only harm us and those around, since it is no better than a weak compromise with circumstances.

Giving in to cruelty, accepting unfairness or putting up with unacceptable behaviour would never qualify as adaptability  — but as weakness.

Indeed, if we were to get used to the idea of wife-bashing, rape, murder, corruption, wife-swapping,cheating ; of parents cruelly snuffing out the lives of their little ones or men chopping others into 300 pieces, it would be a sorry state of affairs indeed……
