When does 'we're just friends' cross the line?

Is emotional investment in a bond outside your own the first step to a catastrophe?

Will you back off, if someone lights-up-your-life/day a bit too much?

Is there a sense of vacuum when 'one' colleague doesn't turn up at work?

Are you checking your mailbox too often? Waiting for an sms? A poke? A scrap?

Are you opening up to a friend / colleague emotionally?

Are you confiding a bit too much & expecting empathy / sympathy in return?

Do you have an 'Office Spouse' who knows your daily travails & you know his/hers?

Do you find yourself wanting to 'edit or omit' a story when asked 'How was you day'?

Do you quickly delete every message in your Outbox / Inbox?

Is secrecy a key feature to infidelity?

Do you keep your phone bills lying around or do you tear them up as soon as you receive them?

Do affairs really begin with kisses? Or over a cup of coffee?

Are you talking to yourself, convincing yourself that it is all innocent?

Do people just end up cheating one day or is it a temptation that has been nurtured, just waiting for an opportunity?

Is a virtual fling infidelity? (That alone is the biggest debate of this millennium)

Is an online affair pardoned 'cause "Hey! I'm not touching anybody!"

And then one reads an sms not intended for one’s eyes.

Daddy’s home.

I ponder over my choices.

1. I can simply cold shoulder him (but then asks irritatingly obvious questions about my day)

2. I can greet him with a quick smile & go back to Zach & Cody.

3. I can say Hi & wait for him to go kiss Mumma. Then I can react. Get irritable & have them both declare their undying love for me.  (They smirk ‘Attention Deficit’ before they come for me) BUT this is my chance to get Maggi granted for dinner.

4. I can go yap non-stop about how Vaibhav puked in the class today. Dad is never grossed out about puke, potty & susu events. This way I get to have Daddy totally to myslef.

Since I’m in no mood to sleep right away, I will pick no. 2 & sleep huddled between both. Ha!

She’s staring at her computer. A bit too intently. I sense the good timing. But just to be sure I ask her an inane question. She raises an eyebrow. Mutters a ‘Huhn?’, but doesnt take her eyes off the screen.

Yippee!

I can safely raid her drawer. Use her lipstick. Paint my nails. Use the permanent marker. Eat a chocolate just before lunch & spoil my appetite. Sneak out to the balcony when its blazing.

Up at 5am.

Brushed, bathed and fresh after just 4 hours of sleep 'cause our hunger and sleep patterns are really in our hands, yes?

Warm a glass of milk.

Pack a lunch for the 7-year old.

Nutritious yet delicious. Appetising. Like it came from a photo-shoot for Good Housekeeping. You gotta feed 'em right, yes?

Wake-up call in a loving but firm voice.

The daughter has healthy, long & curly hair.

Not for her, the short boyish styles the other mothers force on their daughters in name of convenience.

The school bus departs.

Detoxifying herbal tea for the Husband & self. Tea in bed.

Years of matrimony & they still cherish this 'us' time, all theirs in the morning.

Superwoman zips about the dustless-spotless-decorated-with-personal-touch house. Mornings are busy.

In next 60 minutes fixes another healthy breakfast; packs another nutritious low-cal high-fibre Good Housekeeping type lunch; does the laundry; answers the doorbells (seven in all); allots chores & supervises the maid; lays out the clothes for Husband and sees him off with a smile & a hug!

She hits the treadmill. (An hour a day is good, thrice a week is mandatory).

A break after 30 minutes to sip lemon water. And wash to off the papaya-honey-yoghurt mask that keeps her looking far younger than mid-thirties.

Off to work.

Talented & an amazing net-worker. Makes a neat packet with her job.

Flexi-time!

Because her family needs her around. After all, children of stay-at-home moms are more secure & have a higher IQ. Maids or grannies aren't what a growing child needs, yes?

During the day she fixes an appointment with the paediatrician, takes the kid to a dance class, socialises with other school moms, picks up a toothpaste, pays the phone bill, collects dry-cleaning, spends quality time with in-laws, renews the DVD rental service, has a meaningful conversation with her daughter, gives a reminder call to the Husband about the last date of insurance payment, calls the electrician and pops in at the parlour to get her eyebrows arched.

Oh include planning a party with 20 friends at her place on the weekend. 'Cause all work & no play is unhealthy, yes? 

She re-applies her lip-gloss.

Should greet your husband with a fresh sight, yes?

Family dines together (a light meal at night) before the school going kid is tucked after being read to. Reading really works, yes?

'Us' time again. Exchange the day's stories with spouse. Update each other.

Time to turn into a sex goddess.

Arouse, titillate & make voracious love before sleep.

The next day is underway in her head already.

She has to buy a birthday gift for mother-in-law and call the grocer for a loaf of multi-grain bread.

Visiting my page after months … have had little time to indulge in leisurely stuff like blogs. Been working hard and partying harder … ahhh, back to life! Working, Mothering, Travelling, Loving, Facebooking, Orkuting, FlickRing, Housekeeping, Waxing (now waning), Binge-ing (now fasting), Socializing, Drinking, Saving, Spending ….   all but blogging. Guess it’s a dispensible pastime in face of an active life.

I'm pissed.

And here's my rant.

My daughter stands in front of the mirror and sucks in her stomach to make it look flatter. She then breaks into a dance move involving some serious pouting and hip shaking.

She's just five.

Out shopping, she picks shiny sequinned high heels while I scout for anti-skid sturdy strap on shoes.

She wants a midriff baring lycra halter neck, while I shortlist sensible cotton T shirts.

She wants a Barbie, while I ask for a Jigsaw puzzle.

My husband & I don't watch TV.

MTV and FTV are restricted to late night way past my kid's bed time.

We don't discuss or glorify body images.

Fat vs. thin conversations are avoided.

Bollywood movies are seldom watched.

We have never bought her a Barbie doll.

[And now I vow to throw out the ones she owns thanks to her doting aunts, who think Barbie Dolls make perfect gifts]

It baffles me how my daughter manages to absorb such influences from her peers and Pogo.

What pisses me further is the way the market is loaded with stuff which sexualises children.

Why Barbie? Why not simple rag dolls? Why not flat-chested, normally proportioned baby dolls?

Why mid riff baring backless halter necked tops with 'sexy' emblazoned across the chest?

Why two piece swimsuits for under 10s?

Why advertisements with a boy of eight gazing lovingly at his curvaceous teacher?

This can actually feed paedophillia.

Delhi has seen over half a dozen shameful cases in just two months, where victims have been under five.

As for being too body conscious, it doesn’t end their own reflections in the mirror.

I was disturbed to hear a 10 year old boy asking his mother to forgo the extra chapatti in her plate. He was seriously concerned that his mother would put on weight. He also regularly monitors her wardrobe, weeding out the suits and sarees. And this, while the lady in question is an attractive, active career woman in late 30s.

While another kid, a 12 year old daughter of a friend calls her mother a 'baby elephant' each time she wears jeans because she happens to have a typically Indian generous frame. Trust me, she's NOT obscenely heavy hipped! But her daughter probably has the ‘TV moms’ in mind…

So where are we headed?

How do explain what 'sexy' means to a five year old?

Is it okay for a little girl to wear a tee that resembles a bikini top?

Why can't there be a Barbie with brown skin, black hair and generous hips?

Can’t Pogo/Cartoon Network do without airing programmes that feature boy meets girl plots?

Phew

Quite methodically, we gave up smoking, alcohol, birth control [in that order] and tried to detox or purge ourselves in preparation 

[However, I ended up conceiving on the night when we were supposedly having last of our wild substance-abuse parties at a friend's house!
But that's another story  ]

I was still not in the motherhood gear and was quite apprehensive about this massive milestone we had decided to cross   

Here's what flowed back then  

Anxiety

Panic

Ok, so lets make babies

If we have our way

I will soon have

My breasts sagging

My stomach stretch-marked

My hands full

My time short

My hips wider

My paunch in place

My clothes smelling of milk

My room full of soiled diapers

My heart full of guilt
