HUTCH CUP 2006
PAKISTAN v/s INDIA
5TH ODI, KARACHI
Another flawless perfomance from Team India as they completed a remarkable comeback by winning their 4th match on the bounce. One of the most convincing victories the Indian team has ever had in recent years as they beat Pakistan by 8 wickets and by doing so they have made it clear that this Indian side can be serious contenders for the World Cup in 2007. Without their No. 1 batsman and No. 1 bowler India chased Pakistan’s total of 286 with 3 overs to spare.
With the series already in the bag the Indians had nothing to play for as they went into this match. Greg Chappell had made a few changes to the side that beat Pakistan at Multan. Irfan Pathan and Sachin Tendulkar were given a well deserved break as they stepped down from the playing eleven as Romesh Powar and Zaheer Khan got a start and Murali Kartik was named SuperSub. Pakistan also made two changes, as Salman Butt made way for Imran Farhat and Rana Naved was dropped and newcomer Iftikhar Anjum was given a start. Faisal Iqbal was named their SuperSub.
Rahul Dravid won the toss yet again and as always he choose to field first. This match was a matter of pride for Pakistan and they had to take advantage of the inexperienced Indian bowling attack. The absence of Irfan Pathan meant that Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar were given the new ball. They failed to capitalize on the early morning conditions as they conceded 9 wides in the first 10 overs and Pakistan were off to a sound start.10 overs gone Pakistan 54/0.
Sreesanth came on and the bowling change immediately bought results as Farhat was dismissed. Clever piece of bowling from Sreesanth as he bowled a very good bouncer that foxed Farhat who hit the ball upishly and Sreesanth taking an easy catch off his own bowling. Sreesanth struck again as he dismissed Kamran Akmal who top edged the ball to R.P Singh who took a well judged catch at fine leg. Shoaib Malik has been in great form in this series and he was looking dangerous from very early on but he too was dismissed by Sreesanth thanks to a superb catch by Suresh Raina at gully. Pakistan lost 3 wickets in the space of 5 overs and were now tottering at 78 for 3 of 15 overs. Despite losing 3 quick wickets Pakistan were going at a good run rate as they were 101 for 3 in 20 overs.
Inzaman led from the front as he and Mohd.Yousuf played the waiting game as they dispatched the loose deliveries. Just as Inzaman started to cut loose he was dismissed by Romesh Powar. A brilliant ball and Inzaman was plum L.B.W as he went back to the pavilion making just 21 runs. Pakistan were definitely in a sticky situation at 119 for 4. But then the experienced combination of Younis Khan and Mohd.Yousuf pulled the game away from the Indians. They both had a vital partnership of 95 but this partnership was broken in the 41st over by Ajit Agarkar who foxed Yousuf with a slower ball, and Yousuf was caught in the deep by Zaheer Khan. Some tight bowling from Zaheer and Sreesanth contained the Pakistani's and they finally finished with 286 with Younis Khan top scoring with an unbeaten 74 of just 79 balls. Sreesanth finished with his career best bowling figures of 4 for 58 runs. The Indians conceded no less than 21 extras in the game.
The Indian skipper, Rahul Dravid had to open the innings due to the absence of Sachin Tendulkar. He and Gautam Gambhir started solidly as they had a run rate of around 4 per over but the important thing was that they had all 10 wickets in hand. Both the batsmen were milking the Pakistani bowling attack as the Indians were looking good. Just then Iftikhar Anjum got the much needed wicket as he dismissed Gautam Gambhir. But then Yuvraj Singh, the man of the moment came on and the Indians continued with an impressive run rate of 4 ' 5 runs per over. Dravid was taking his time as he was playing solidly and he was looking good to see the Indian chase all the way till the end. Inzamam was desperate for a wicket as he bought on his main bowler Mohd.Sami and this change immediately yielded results as Rahul Dravid was caught by Shoaib Malik who took a simple catch. The required run rate was 7 runs per over and the new man in was Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Though the run rate was now a demanding 8 per over the pair stayed calm and just took the singles and the two's. There was an occasional boundary but it was mostly just good running between the wickets. Some poor fielding from the Pakistani's really gave the Indians the upper hand. Then in the 39th over Yuvraj pulled his hamstring but that didn't stop him from going on. A couple of quick boundaries and the pressure back on Pakistan and then Yuvi gave way to the "Dhoni Show" as the man from Jharkand smashed all the Pakistani bowlers around the park with complete ease. He hit 4 massive sixes and in the end he was unbeaten with 77 from just 46 balls. Yuvraj Singh made yet another 100 as he finished with 107 of just 93 balls.
This splendid performance by Yuvi won him both the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series awards. Yuvraj was the clear winner as he was the highest run scorer in the series as he made 344 runs in 5 matches with a remarkable average of 172. This was Yuvraj's second consecutive Man of the Series award.
India winning the Hutch Cup 2006, 4 games to 1 and they beat Pakistan at Pakistan which itself is a phenomenal achievement and the Indians go into the England series oozing with confidence.

FIFA WORLD CUP ' GERMANY 2006
The most important football event of all kicks off on the 9th of June in Germany. The groups have already been made and we can look forward to some amazing fixtures.
Group A Germany Costa Rica Poland Ecuador | Group B England Paraguay Trinidad and Tobago Sweden |
Group C Argentina Holland Ivory Coast Serbia and Montenegro | Group D Mexico Iran Angola Portugal |
Group E Italy CzechRepublic U.S.A Ghana | Group F Brazil Australia Japan Croatia |
Group G France South Korea Togo Switzerland | Group H Spain Ukraine Tunisia Saudi Arabia |
Hosts Germany has a considerably easy group and they are expected to qualify with ease as they were last year's runner's up. It would be a good battle for the 2nd spot in the table as all the other teams are evenly matched.
According to experts 1966 winners England have the easiest group and this is their easiest chance of winning the World Cup. Do Beckham and his players have what it takes to go all the way to the finals?
Group C can be referred to as one the "Group of Death" as superpowers Holland and Argentina are in the same group. Holland has never won the World Cup and Argentina last won it during the times of Maradona, so both these teams will be very focused.
Another Group of Death will be Group E as European powerhouses Italy and Czech Republic battle it out. Italy, the World's meanest Defence will take on one of the most formidable attacks of the Czechs. And also U.S.A are no pushovers so this will definitely be the group to watch out for.
Defending Champions Brazil have an easy group as they will face Australia, Croatia and Japan. Can any one conquer the mighty Brazil or will it be yet another World Cup for the Brazilians.
Live action starts from the 9th of June 2006 and Team news and other injury news will be shown later. Will we see new champions this year or will Brazil walk away with the glory yet again We'll soon find out !!!!!!!!!!!!

India were leadin 2 - 1 in the series and were the favourites for today’s match.
This match was the 4th encounter between these two sides and one could say that this was in a way the series decider.
Pakistan had their own injury worries. Shahid Afridi joined Shoaib Akthar on the injury list. Also Umar Gul was not available. So Mohd. Sami was recalled for this match and so was Imran Farhat who played as the SuperSub.
India had an unchanged eleven and from very early on lady luck was on their side.
Rahul Dravid winning the toss and without hesitation he elected to field first.
Pakistan had a dodgy start.Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth bowled two maiden overs and just when things were looking good for Pakistan, Pathan struck taking the prized wicket of Kamran Akmal. Great Captaincy by Dravid as he placed Raina in an orthodox position of short point and the wicket fell the very next ball.
And after that it was a walk in the park for the Indians as Pathan took the wicket of Salman Butt who was caught brilliantly by the Indian skipper.
Then came on R.P Singh and he got rid of danger men Shoaib Malik and Vice Captain Younis Khan and Pakistan were in deep trouble at 29 for 4.
Then some good batting by Inzaman and Mohd. Yousuf helped the pakistani’s. Just as they were looking good Ajit Agarkar struck taking the wicket of Mohd. Yousuf. Yet another superb piece of fielding by the Indians as Dhoni took and excellent catch.
Then it was just a matter of time before the Indians got the Pakistani’s all out for just 161 as R P Singh got 4 wickets and Irfan Pathan got 3 wickets.
The Indian run chase suffered an early setback as ”the little master” Sachin Tendulkar went back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. But Rahul Dravid came and steered the Indian Ship making a brilliant 59. He was supported well by Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh who both made 21 and 37 respectively. Suresh Raina made a valueable 35 as he took the Indians to victory.
Towards the end Pakistan took wickets at regular intervals but 162 proved to be too small a total to defend as India eventually reached home with 17 overs left in the game.
Mohd. Sami took 3 wickets and R P Singh was named Man of the match because of his remarkable Perfomance.
India have now taken an unbeatable lead of 3 - 1 in the series and by doing so they have won the HUTCH CUP 2006.
