Being a Christian is a lifelong journey with our heavenly father. Perhaps you have been a Christian for some time. You know that you should pray. You see that other people enjoy praying. But praying is hard for you, perhaps you have even stopped. The trouble is that you may not understand what prayer is.

Prayer is not always about asking. It can be viewed as having a conversation with your close friend. You do not always ask your friends for favors. Sometimes you just tell them how your day was; you listen to what they have to tell you and their advice and also their guidance. God wants you to talk to him, not recite a prayer with no heart felt meaning. He also wants you to listen when He talks to you. Praying is having a talk with God.

God says he is our father. He also says He is our Friend. He told His disciples, “You are my friends if you what I command you” John 15:14. He did not call his followers servants or helpers. He called them friends. Even though God is much greater than we are, He wants to be our friend. When we pray, we are having a talk with God, our friend.

Prayer is really important in a Christian man or woman’s life. It serves unlimited purpose which include;

  • Prayer is important because God wants us to pray. The bible is full of verses which tell us to pray. “And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” Luke 18:1. “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication let your request be made known to God.” Philippians 4: 6

  • Prayer helps us when we are met with difficult situations that seem impossible to solve. It is by prayer that our sins are forgiven. It is by prayer that we resist satan’s temptations. Prayer makes us strong when we are in trouble.

  • Prayer helps other people. Praying for others in need, a relative, pastor or even a stranger can help that person attain a blessing from God.

Prayer is like breathing. You do not just breathe when you are sick or when you have the time. You breathe all the time. We must pray all the time because prayer gives us spiritual strength. We gain all we need through prayer and supplication.
