2 glasses of orange juice a day can lower your blood pressure and cut the risk of heart disease, according to a research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. High blood pressure puts our arteries under greater pressure when the heart beats, and is one of the major risk factors contributing to a cardiac arrest or stroke.

Scientists at the University of Auvergne, France, investigated the effect of orange juice and its major flavonoid, hesperidin, on blood pressure and cardiovascular risk. They found that middle-aged, overweight men who drank half-a-litre of juice every day for a month, equivalent to about two glasses, saw a significant decline in their blood pressure readings.

However, if you are taking blood pressure pills, you should take your physician’s advice before consuming more orange juice than usual intake, as previous studies suggest that some fruit juices, including orange, grape and apple, can reduce the effectiveness of some drugs.

Daily Ginger intake eases muscle pain

Researchers at the University of Georgia have found that daily ginger consumption reduces muscle pain caused by exercise, states sciencedirect.com.

Patrick O’Connor, a professor in the College of Education’s department of kinesiology, directed two studies examining the effects of 11 days of raw and heat-treated ginger supplementation on muscle pain.

34 and 40 participants in the study, respectively, consumed capsules containing two grams of either raw of heat-treated ginger of a placebo for 11 consecutive days. On the eighth day they performed 18 extensions of the elbow flexors with a heavy weight to induce moderate muscle injury to the arm.

The studies showed that daily ginger supplementation reduced the exercise-induced pain by 25 per cent and the effect was not enhanced by heat-treating the ginger.

Showerheads may present a significant potential exposure to microbes, warns the ” proceedings of the national academy of science, US”. A team of researchers , from the University of Colorado, US, analysed the film of microbes that builds up within shower heads and found significant deposits of non tuberculous mycobacterium avivum, at levels 100 times as high as those found in drinking water.

Mycobacterium avivum is responsible for a type of pulmonary disease, the cases of which have increased with showering, researchers found. Though taking a shower is not dangerous, but PEOPLE HAVING LOW IMMUNITY, SUCH AS THE ELDERLY OR PREGNANT, COULD BE AFFECTED.

Cell phone users are at risk of getting an itchy skin problem, warn researchers at the British Association of? Dermatologists, London. They have found that mobile users are increasingly developing rashes on their faces and ears caused by allergic reaction to the nickel on handsets.

This phenomenon, researchers say, is being seen in people who spend long time on phone.

Nickel is extensively used in cell phone handsets, including buttons and round the screen. People who are sensitive to nickel find their skin becoming red, inflamed, blistered, sry and cracked.

Researchers have dubbed the phenomenon “mobile phone dermatitis”.

Rashes typically appear on the cheek or ear, depending on where the metal part of the phone comes into contact with the skin. In theory it could even occur on fingers if you spend a lot of time texting on metal menu buttons.

Women have higher risk of developing ” mobile dermatitis” as they are more likely to have been previously sensitised to the metal following an allergic reaction to nickel-coated jewellery.
