25 May 2011 @ 12:16 PM
This has been a long pending entry from my end. This entry is the result of a radio programme soon after the announcement of the TN election results that set me thinking about the timing of the discussion.

The programme that am alluding to was discussing about, as the topic of my blog entry suggests, the connection between movies and politics. More so, there were a spate of resignations in the various movie association fraternity, that was being debated about. Whether, the two industries should have a direct impact on one another and whether there should be such deep penetration of politics in the movie industry.

While I would have quite accepted that there shouldn’t be an association between movies and politics, the timing of this debate left me a bit high and dry.

We, in Tamilnadu, have been watching the complete control of the movie business by the ruling family for the past five years. Nothing was said or discussed about it during all that time. But, soon after the announcement of the results, and the ensuing resignations, this debate was raised. That, sort of tickled me :-)

Not many of us would have forgotten the innumerable vizhas (congratulatory events) proffered by the film fraternity to the ex-Chief Minister during his reign. This brought out severe reactions from some of the actors, notably, from Ajith. The timing of his outburst and the audience stunned one and all. More than his outburst, the reaction from other leading actors, not to ignore the standing ovation from Rajnikanth, cannot but be smeared in one’s memory.

This was, but one portion of the control that the family had on the movie business. Apart from this, they controlled the television media (the Sun Network that controlled the complete south), the SCV that controlled the cable distribution, and the innumerable companies floated by various members of the family that completely controlled the movie industry - Sun Pictures from the Maran brothers, Red Giant Movies from Stalin’s family, Cloud Nine Movies from Alagiri family. Through this nexus of companies, their control over the media / film industry was complete. One cannot but find a movie that was released during the last two or three years, that did not come from one of these companies. If, by some providence, an independent banner found its way to the theatres, it would hardly run for more than a week. Case in point is the release of the movie ‘Thenmerrkku Paruva Kaattru’. The heroine of the movie won the National Award for best performance, but the movie was forced out of the theatres to make way for one of the movies from the family’s companies.

One cannot also forget the slew of actors and actresses who went on the election campaign trail evincing the wonders of the past government, and exhorting the people to cast their votes in favour of the ruling alliance. In particular, the personal attacks of Vadivelu on both Jayalalitha and Vijaykanth were not in good taste for a person like me, whatever the perceived flaws of the people involved might be.

While I cannot but totally agree with the host of the show about the necessity for a distinct delineation between the two industries, as expressed earlier, the timing of this show quite amused me.

Look forward to all your comments and your take on this.

The world cup is turning out to be a cup of woes for the Indian Cricket Team or rather the Indian Cricket fan.

While the whole country has been harping on the fact that we are likely to be the winners of the 2011 edition of the world cup, I seriously have my doubts.

The only heroics(??!!?) displayed by our boys so far has been the convincing victory over Bangladesh. They have struggled to even win against associate nations like Ireland and Holland. These victories can’t even be termed as convincing.

How can a team that’s struggling to win even against such associate nations lift the world cup? The team is yet to post a win against a serious nation. Against England, another pathetic match, it was a tie. No word in the dictionary can even come close to describing the playing prowess(???!!!?) of the boys in the match against South Africa.

I have not fathomed the reasoning behind having seven batsmen in a team, when it still needs to depend only on Sachin Tendulkar to open the innings and stay at the crease till the end. What batsmen who can’t stabilise the fall of wickets? And what cricket are we talking about? 9 wickets in a span of 30 runs, and of these, 6 of them are supposed to be batsmen! What nonsense! The team can’t bat, it can’t bowl and it can’t field well. So, what cup are we talking about. At best, the boys can dream about lifting the world-cup. Even then, they should all have had a shot at heroin.

Such a team doesn’t even deserve to reach the Quarter-finals, leave alone the Semis and the Finals. Winning is a far scream. With the kind of craze for the game and the demi-god status bestowed upon these individuals, one would expect a far more responsible and sensible approach to the game. But, it looks like the guys are more interested in IPL and other series that are money-spinners rather than waste their time playing for the country. Patriotism, honour, etc seem to be lost words in the vocabulary of these gentlemen. In India, atleast, the game should be ceased to be referred to as gentlemen’s game. It’s more about money, power, and sleaze.

The time is not far when cricket will also be accorded the same status as other games in this country, if the gentlemen in question continue to play the way they are, as people are bound to lose interest with the antics of these gentlemen on / off ground, pretty soon. It’s just a matter of time.

Dear Friends,

This post is in continuation to a news item that I read today.

The panchayat of Mowlivakkam, falling under the jurisdiction of Mangadu, in Chennai has brutally captured and killed 56 dogs, 11 of them being puppies, because they were stray.

How sad? I mean, there are organisations like Blue Cross, People for Animals, etc. If the dogs were a menace, they could have been captured in a proper way and sent across to such organisations for neutralisation and kept in homes for adoption.

What according to these people is the next step I wonder. There are enough and more people who do not have homes and who sleep on the pavements across the world. Round them up and kill them? If people had such simple solutions, there are quite a lot of people who are a burden to their own country and to Mother Earth. All such people should be the ones to go first.

Wonder where man has acquired this arrogance where he feels he runs everything and owns everything. Earth was not created exclusively for man, but for all life forms from the most simplest to the most complex. It is as much the right of an amoeba to live as it is for a human being. Earth belongs as much to all life forms as it does to human being. Just because we manage to talk and think doesn’t mean we can take Mother Earth for granted and own it on behalf of all other life forms.

How much brutality we show towards our fellow inhabitants, that apart from what we show to our own fellow beings? I guess it is we, the human race, who have proved ourselves unworthy of Mother Earth. Apart from indiscriminately misusing and depleting Mother Earth’s natural resources, we’ve also made it impossible for other life forms to survive here by reducing their natural habitat.

Right from cutting down trees and reducing forest areas, which are a life form by themselves, and also, give us life by recycling carbon-di-oxide, we are making it impossible for other inhabitants of forests to live, and then condemn them to incarceration in zoos for our own pleasures. Then, we try to act magnanimous and start campaigns on ‘Save the Tiger’, etc. Why endanger them in the first place. Who are we to encroach upon their natural habitat.

What would happen if all life forms of Mother Earth decided to wage a war on human race for spoiling their lovely Mother Earth and their habitat. Should be a wonderful script for a movie. But, also, it’s an insightful and provocative thought. Guess, it’s time we stopped the atrocities meted out to other life forms and on Mother Earth herself.

What do you think? As usual, look forward to all your comments. Please keep them coming in.

Dear Friends,

I’ve been wondering on how we handle our country, our infrastructure, our resources, and our amenities.

It’s quite saddening to know that we’ve been abusing our country, while at the same time we crib and complaint about the way the whole world and the Britishers treated us.

I would like to know what kind of advantages we are taking of our great nation, and how we could curb those mis-uses.

As always, look forward to all your comments.

I have a lot to speak about this, but after listening to all your comments. So, keep them flowing.

Dear Friends,
It indeed has been a very long time since I’ve been active in these pages. I shall try to be more active and look forward to interact with you all more fully.
In the meanwhile, I would definitely love to share the reason for my absence from these pages. I would like to share with you all that we’ve been blessed with a very beautiful and lovely baby boy.
He’s completed one year just a couple of months back. That has been the reason for my absence and full occupation this past year. Find below a picture of my boy.

I’ve moved on to a new workplace now with added responsibilities. Let’s all do keep in touch from now on more regularly.
Also, I’ve been thinking of writing on a few things, which I shall do pretty soon. As always, will look forward to all your comments and best wishes.
Thanks!

Thanks to all those who’d read my previous blog and commented on it. A friend of mine had even posted a question on how so many youngsters could be brainwashed!

Imagine a four year old being told that India is an eternal enemy of our country, and constantly imbibing such an information with a lot of misinformation to support one’s statement. Wouldn’t it make a deep impact at such an impressionable age and stay with the child throughout its life?

And, remember, that these madarassas do have a good strategy when they get into their misinformation campaign. They choose children from poverty ridden families with hopes to the parents that the children will be well taken care of and also a monthly stipend to the family to support themselves. And then, these children are fed, clothed, watered in these madarassas and constantly taught hatred against India. How else would they grow but as terrorists?

Only those Pakistani’s who’ve had the fortune of going abroad and having a proper education are better and saner. But, what’s the ratio of these people vis-a-vis the poverty ridden ones? A good point for our own politicians to think about! What say you?:)

Following the recent brutal attack on the Sri Lankan team, I would only like to emphasise something that I’ve been saying for the past decade now.

It’s high time Pakistan is declared as a terror state and all sanctions to the country stopped. Coz, anyway, the funding that they are getting from the international community is not going towards any developmental activity in the country, but towards funding the army and the terrorists - and mind you my dear readers, never be in any illusion. As far as Pakistan is concerned, one is not different from the other.

As always, would look forward to all your comments on the same!

Dear Friends!

I thank all those who have enquired about my silence and absence from the blog. To all of you, I have to say, I’ve recently moved over to a new job and the new job responsibilities kept me a bit busy. I needed to understand the new environment and get acquainted with the role & responsibilities.

If am sounding too priggish / self-absorbed, kindly apologise. But, it’s a huge responsibility and I really needed that time.

Now, coming to business:)

This is one topic that I’ve addressed quite a bit from different angles in some of my previous blogs. There are quite a few where I’ve explored the kind of education that the madarassas must be giving the young muslim kids to influence them so heavily against India. Infact, in a previous blog of mine, I’d wondered what kind of strong motivation did these madarassas offered these kids to take up arms against India, knowing fully well that their efforts are going to be futile.

And, there’s an IB report / research on the same that was published in rediff.com today. Kindly find a link to the same here.

This didn’t come as much of a surprise to me. Though at one level, I couldn’t help laughing at the kind of education that’s being imparted, at a different level, just wondering how serious and damaging it could be, not only for India, but for the world at large.

Also, what dumbos they are making of their children. No wonder, the country is languishing in abject penury and they’d continue to be in this state unless they start looking at proper education.

Instead of wasting all that money towards spreading hatred, if they only would start educating their masses towards good things, how much can they improve as a nation?

Surprising how some people really think and act. But, as someone commented on the messageboard, it’s all for the good. When the whole world is prospering and educating their masses towards improvement, there’s one country that’s moving towards doom and creating a generation of dumbos:)

As always, would look forward to all your comments / views on this topic:)

 08 Jan 2009 @ 6:16 PM

Just a few minutes back, was reading an article in rediff.com on zodiac signs and the fortunes of each zodiac sign for the year 2009.

Well, it was not so much the forecast that made me laugh, but the reaction of the people that really got me laughing.

What is it with our people and their obsession with zodiac signs and horoscopes? Can’t we just work hard and see the fruition of those efforts instead of depending on stars and planets to influence our lives.

And, what surprised me the most and made me laugh the hardest was people posting their personal details like name, date of birth, contact details, etc along with their greivances on the world wide web…. How much more crazy can us all get about horoscopes?

I won’t act a saint and say that I wasn’t curious about it. I definitely was curious as to what was forecast, but then, my curiosity ends there. I’ve never in my life believed in all these forecasts after having gone through some of the most radical and sometimes irrational predictions being made about my life and future by some of the so called fortune tellers:)

People have been crazy enough to say that I would move to some foreign location, US having been the fixation with our people for quite a long time, from the age of 18. Nothing can be far from the truth. 13 years down the line, I’ve still not visited even Nepal, leave alone US. And, most of all, I would be the last person to do something as drastic as that!

Where else in this world would you get such freedom as your own Motherland? The only claim to fame that I do have is my having travelled the length and breadth of India, something of which am extremely proud!

Moreover, all these predictions are so generic. I just can’t imagine how our people can be gullible enough to imagine it would suit them and give them a clear picture about their future.

I don’t deny there are some people who are really accurate about such predictions, but then the science of horoscope reading has become a rarity and it’s even more rare to find a genuine person. Falling to the gimmicks of fortune hunters is mere stupidity.

I’ve seen people flock the fortune tellers on beach, pavements, etc here in TN. I really pity such people. I mean, they are actually asking people, who can’t predict their own fate, to tell them about their future! What can they say?

As long as we depend on quick fix solutions to our life’s problems and look for the easy way out instead of hard work, I guess, there’ll always be fortune hunters who’ll take advantage of the situation.

Wishing our people better intelligence in the New Year!

As I had mentioned earlier in my blog, ‘Of Movies
and Relationships’, I was planning to do a series on the movies that I’d been
watching and a little analysis on the same, when terror struck in Mumbai and I ran
a series of posts on the same.

Though not moving on, I have had my say on the
terror attacks and unless we do get a strong leadership or the attitude of our
people changes, nothing much can be done, honestly.

Hence, am taking a break from the same and looking
at the next part of my series.

Many of you would have wondered at the strange
title to my blog post and wondered what it meant. Well, it’s the name of the
movie that am going to talk about in this post.

It’s an old movie and when my spouse picked it up, I
was clueless as to why he’d chosen an unknown movie. But, he shared that it was
a movie that was played in one of the training sessions in his organisation to
imbue motivation in the trainees. After seeing the movie, I understood why.

An excellent movie, indeed. It’s that rare movie
that you come across occasionally and when you do see it, it leaves a lasting
impression upon you.

Sea Biscuit is the main protagonist of the movie. He’s
not a man or a woman, but a horse. The story, initially atleast, follows two
tracks and unless one concentrates, will lose track of what’s happening.

While one track follows the birth of the horse, the
other track follows the childhood of a boy. The story of the boy is quite unique,
that during an economic depression, to take care of the family and to face the
financial crisis, he’s sold to a stable owner by his father.

His life is interspersed with quite a lot of
failures and incapability to handle either horses or people and he turns out to
be a violent guy.

At this stage, we are taken back to the horse,
which also is quite an animal, in that it is totally unmanageable and doesn’t
let anyone near it.

By this time, the boy has passed through many
stables, and he and the horse are in the same stable. One very shrewd horse
trainer who’d been brought in to train this unmanageable horse, makes this
wonderful connect of bringing together the unmanageable man and the
unmanageable horse together.

From here it’s the making of history where the
horse and the man go on to be the best horse and the best jockey in the circuit
across the world. This victory is achieved, despite the fact that both meet
with accidents in two separate incidents and both of them break their legs. The
doctor warns that if the man rides a horse again, he’d be risking his life
seriously, while the vet attending to the horse completely washes his hands of the
horse’s capability to ever run a race.

But, this is where the movie becomes a legend and
saves itself from the mundane. The treatment meted out to the horse – man duo
and how they make it again is something amazing that can be made only once in a
lifetime.

A stupendous movie and a must watch. I know I’ve
spoiled the suspense for all by sharing the storyline, but then, believe me,
despite my sharing the storyline, this is one movie that you’ll enjoy
tremendously, because I’ve not done complete justice to the movie in my post
here. What I’ve written might convey the plot, but the sincerity in effort in
picturising it, the elegance, the wonderful performances, the overall cinematography,
the editing, et al needs to be experienced.

They can never be conveyed in words. Do see the
movie and I shall look forward to all your comments on the same. For this
reason, I guess I wouldn’t be making further posts in my blog, until I do get
your feedback on the same.
