K.G. Balakrishnan sworn in CJI
New Delhi: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday administered the oath of office to Supreme Court judge K.G. Balakrishnan as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, as also cabinet ministers and judges of the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, attended the swearing in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Balakrishnan succeeds Y.K. Sabharwal who retired on Saturday. The first Dalit to be elevated to the position, Balakrishnan is the 37th CJI and will serve a nearly three-and-a-half-year term.
