The last time I had written about Global Sampoorna, they were still sorting out their teething problems! And if ever there was an act that turned itself around real fast, this must be it. From changing the way their tables are set to improving service, Global Sampoorna has, I think really got a good thing going.
I think the best thing they did was to get rid off their pseudo fast-food image of bar stools and food tables along the walls of the restaurant. I never did think of it as a great idea to start with. In Chennai, very seldom does an individual come alone to a restaurant; unless of course, he is a traveling salesman stopping by for a quick bite. It is good to see that they have got the regular table settings in place.
The other area that immediately required improvement was service. And that too seems to have been taken care of. No more do you need to buy your coupon before sitting down to eat. They do have a person who comes around and offers you the menu. They still have the self-service board up there, but I can’t remember the last time when I had to serve myself. Thankfully, the water cooler has also been moved out, and they actually come around and serve you water, even before taking your order!
I have always liked the food over here - just the right quantity and tastes pretty good too. Perhaps, they could cut down on the number of options and keep the menu simple - this might help them in increasing the turn-around time. This is one area where I still find that there is a lot of room for improvement. They find it hard to serve more than one person at a time, and that means if my meal comes first, I am almost done, before the rest of the guys have even been served their meals! I wonder what the bottleneck is! I’m sure it is not that small cubbyhole through which the meal comes out from the kitchen - one dish at a time!
The phulka continues to be my favourite - though I might have liked a little bit more subji along with it. The salad bar is also excellent - one of the few places in town where you can get a decent salad. And if you are a health-freak then this is the place to stop by for lunch. Rest assured you don’t go away feeling very heavy. And yet the food is quite tasty leaving you with a very content feeling.
Way to go Sampoorna! And by the way, for such an Indian name…and setting, perhaps all those Hollywood stars hanging on to the walls look a little out of place!
I think they’ve got a nice pilot going…and all set to launch themselves globally!
Global sampoorna…sampoornam!
