Muhabbat-e-beshumaar

January 4th, 2008

Aakhen mili toh muskuraati thiN aur dil khil jaate the

bachpan tha jo nahi jaante the ki pyaar hai

haar ke dil ro diya toh jaane kitne bimaar hain

ab kay bichde hain toh fir jaane kab mile
ab kuch fidrat aisi hai kuch rozgaar hai

bas kal raat jo tera tuuta sa khwaab aaya
toh jaane ki ab bhi muhabbat beshumaar hai

rozgaar = daily life/one’s work.PS consider viewing this page in internet explorer if you use firefox/opera etc. and if the font is not clear.

Shab-e-Gham

January 3rd, 2008

andhera aa gaya hai dost, tum bhi aa jaao baith ke baatein tamaam kar lenge

kuch tere, kuch mere gham se
kuch bichdi yaadon se jaam bhar lenge

aaheN bhar lenge, shikwa(1) kar lenge
dil jala kar zara aaraam kar lenge

tum shauq se koi haseen ghazal kahe dena
ham unki yaad ke ghanere saaye me shaam kar lenge

dil ko do pal ka chain mil jaaye
tum hi kaho, ham aaj woh kaam kar lenge

is shab-e-gham(2) ki seher ab na hone paayegi, dost
sochte hain unki gali jaake fir khud ko badnaam kar lenge

(1)shikwa = a bitter complaint

(2)shab-e-gham = evening of pathos

My first amateurish, juvenile, and naive attempt at urdu/hindi poetry, done in a ghazal style. This is inspired by the writing-style — and not the writing itself! — of the urdu poet Faiz. BTW, all English poetry and prose is fine, I seriously wonder what my dad would have to say if he were to read this! (He would probably say the oft-repeated Punjabi north Indian cliche: ladka jawaan ho gaya hai…)
