Broader Scope of Education

I have a habit of reading in my bed, before I fall asleep. Yesterday, I was reading a book that presented a philosophical view about various aspects of society & life.

One of the topics discussed was Education in today’s world. After I was done reading it, I couldn’t help wondering how limited the scope of our education system is! We study subjects, like Sciences, Social Studies, Mathematics, & Languages, right from childhood until we are grown ups. All these subjects play their role in our academic learning and intellectual growth. But what about the behavioural aspect of human beings in the society? With all the luxuries at our disposal today, when or where do we feel the urge to empathize and not ignore people less fortunate than us, physically or financially. It really breaks my heart when I see people being inconsiderate or rude to others, sometimes, apparently, for no rhyme or reason.

I think that the schools should have field trips for children to old people’s homes. This will bring joy to the residents there, and it will expose these young children to another reality of everyone’s life. Older children ( middle/high school age) should be encouraged to spend few hours a month with children in orphanages or other such organizations, without compromising on their academic time. Parents can be a positive role model too and encourage their children in helping others whenever possible.

These are just some of the ideas I came up with. I would like your views too, as to how we can develop the character of today’s children, so they they become better human beings, and not just money making machines!

Noble thoughts….the society as a whole seems to be going downhill….parents have no time for kids which leads them to spend a greater amount of time on Internet and TV…..and all of us know what sort of education kids get from these 2 media…..upbringing of kids, environment at home, involvement of kids for social causes will really make the children feel more about the lesser mortals…..schools can be an excellent media for involving kids in these activities however till that doesnt happen parents should not forget their responsibility…..thanx for the nice post……

Agree with u in every bit of sense. The broader aspect of education in overlooked by many. Thay in most cases depits a childrens hunger for getting marks but when he will apply those education in his linving, then it will b worth the name of Education.

yes Mona u r right only parent can lookout their children’’s behaviour. Achild only follow that parent do infront of him. we should aware about all that. we can teach a good lesson 2 our children what to do what not to do. only we r responsible for this. The environment also play great role here. so plz always attention their activities & get good result.
sloly sloly we can get positive responce….some serials and movies r also encourage them to act that role….

I absolutely agree with you, Mona. Not enough is taught in our schools regarding behaviour patterns. All that children learn is from watching their eleders and the discourtesy, inconsideration and rudeness towards others get compounded. In western countries, children are taught to go to old people homes and orphanges for helping people less fortunate and to hospitals to cheer the patients sufering from terminal diseases. Their habits of good behavior continue even in their prime age and they regularly devote a portion of their earnings as well as their time for well beings of others. In India, such behaviour paterns are rarely seen. What is seen is siphoning of the money and goods intended for poor and helpless people by corrupt politicians and other public servants.
