From The Tea kadai bench to Twitter

November 11th, 2010

Just wondering how social networking would have worked out a few decades ago:

You read something hot on the newspaper or hear something atrocious on the radio. You desperately want
to discuss it with somebody, dissect all available information, analyze
the situation and predict the forthcomings. You head for the Tea kadai bench.
-A shanty hut providing hot liquids with no taste, nevertheless,
feeding juicy information for rubberneckers about the hot trending topics. It is a place where you hang out, most probably with total
strangers and from where, you return most probably with a gassy stomach
but a ear fill of exaggerations, opinions, accusations and a bit of the
latest news. Open almost at anytime, from dawn to dusk, it probably was
the haven for people who had to chew on information but to where one had
to walk to.

Unlike now, where you get the juicy tidbits,
opinions, accusations and bits of the news right where you are -on your
phone or your computer. Courtesy- the twitterati, google pluses, and the FBs on our BlackBerrys and ipads. Interacting with total strangers, exchanging opinions, likeing some comments, cursing a few, +1 some; shareing information, gossiping and RTing
it somewhere else. Looks like the technology has improved, but we
remain our same need-to-express-myself selves either at the Tea-Kadai
Bench or using Twitter!

Red Whiskered bulbuls in my garden

November 2nd, 2010

Red whiskered bulbuls can be identified by their
sweet whistles which can be heard in the background. These are the
couple of bulbuls who visit my garden everyday when it is nice and
sunny. The enjoy the ripe pomegranates and devotedly take a bath and dry
themselves before they fly away. It is such a wonderful sight to see
them. I have grown to wait for them around 3 in the afternoon. Luckily, i
was able to catch their action live also :)

]

Red Whiskered Bulbul
Scientific name: Pycnonotus jocosus

They are have a black, pointed crest on their heads and have a marked
red spot on the base of their tail and below their eyes. Their feathers
are of dark brown hue. Their whistle is very distinct.

Success for a Homemaker?

September 9th, 2010

http://datastore.rediff.com/h5000-w5000/thumb/5E62666E5E6E6D5D73636B/d2xv18gi6ge2hha3.D.0.DSC00015.JPGI am a homemaker. Am i successful? Can i be successful? Can a home maker ever be successful?

It was a question that popped onto my head one day.

Does success mean being involved whole-heartedly, with the working of an organization? Are you successful only if you have a good job?
I have never set foot in an institution- inspite of getting some offers- with the intention of working at that place. But i am at my Home, making sure my husband dear gets to one on time, works his butt off all through the day (and night), feeds himself properly with nutritious food, and is dressed appropriately. I do take the responsibility though, to send the kids off to school, properly groomed and attired. I still work, not only from 9 to 6, keeping my home clean and ready for the rampage that i very well know is happening tomorrow. I do work with great sincerity and respect because i am doing everything for my family. For their well-being, to make their lives happy and easy.

Does success mean making a lot of money?
I dont get paid for the amount of work i put in. Although i do get those rare little hugs and kisses and those thankyou-for-getting-me-out-of-desperate-situation looks. I do get those warm calls and festivity invtiations from friends and family who appreciate the support and attention showered on them. I get free know-hows and how-i-did-it lectures from well-meaning neighbours which end up being great practical advice than the professional store-bought solutions.

Does success mean having more than 100 friends on your Facebook?
I have but very few friends, who unfortunately have yet to discover their facebooks. But i am never short of a friend when i want my kids to be picked up from school, looked after because i am stuck in traffic, or even food when i am at home sick and even to give serious advice, scoldings and consolation on any subject under the sun.

Does being successful mean all work and no-play? Does success mean no time for other things?
I do have a tight schedule in the mornings. But, later in the day, i get todo what i like to do. Read books, just walk in the garden, get on the internet and lose myself in the world wide web. Doing what i like todo makes me feel so good, that it recharges me for yet another day. Just keeps me happy.

Does being successful mean not losing focus?
I am focused on so many things on one particular day that it all seems so vague. I juggle so many different things at one particular instant that i dont feel like i am doing anything properly at that point. But, at the end of the day, i somehow manage to bring all the horses back home, safe and sound.

Doesnt successful mean accomplishing something?
I like to think that i accomplish something everyday- Healthy food, clean home, friendly neighbours, goodwill with the extended family and friends. This might not compare great against people who sign up trade agreements with the US or create multi-storeyed buildings for a living. But keeps the husband relaxed and lets the kids be kids.

Doesnt being successful mean being sure of yourself and have high confidence levels?
Then, i am not. According to a lot of spiritual teachers, we just have to do our duty that has been assigned to us properly and whole heartedly in this life. I do the duty of a homemaker whole heartedly but cant help feeling that is this why i was born? Just to be a  homemaker? i am surely capable of much much more? Then why do i find blockades to every little path i follow? Or am i not trying hard enough? Or am i just being lazy?

Angels and Demons

June 12th, 2009

I am still excited about my birthday as i was when i was on my first birthday! It seems that i invited all my relatives to join my bday bash when i was just one! I am your total social media person :)This year, my hubby and me planned a sneak lunch and movie when the kids were at school. (Angels and Demons is a A-rated movie, i told myself to erase the itty bitty guilt i was feeling)
The show was at 10AM. We reached the theater before the clean-up crew and got ourselves the gold class tickets. (Treat for the birthday baby!) Reclining comfortably on the leather, gazing at the huge screen with extremely good sound quality, hand-in-hand with an attentive hubby, without the tension of the mid-of-the-movie-bathroom-breaks, i even loved the damn commercials. (Yeah, we rarely get to go to the theater for the movies)

Anyway, the movie Angels and Demons was bright (unlike the Da Vinci Code), fast-paced and i think, did justice to the book. Tom Hanks is a Symbologist who is summoned when there is a threat on the Vatican city by the Antimatter and the “Illuminati” claim responsibility for it. Robert Langdon has to again understand the set of clues, help the Swiss Guard find the maniac who also plans to kill all the four Preferiti (the cardinals who are most likely to be the next Pope) in the name of the Illuminati by branding them with an ambigram {Ambigrams are a form of word play in which the words are written in such a way that they can be read in more than one way, similar to the one above} representing the four primordial elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) and also find the AntiMatter which would destroy the city. The movie too picks up pace right from the start and though the movie has been modified from the book, the story is still as captivating. Tom Hanks looks and accomplishes the part of an aging professor with flair and Obi-Wan (as we chellama call Ewan McGregor) came off great as the Carmelango. Vittoria is the bright scientist who helped create the AntiMatter and was a vivacious personality in the book. Somehow, she didnt seem to be such a big deal in the movie. Tons of information about the Conclave, the nuances of the statues, the history of the Illuminati and their followers were lost, but thats movies for you! But, it was really nice to “see” the churchs, chapels, and the Angels that Dan Brown so nicely draws in your mind.

I loved the book but liked the movie too.
