THE GRADE
During my school years, my father was concerned with one grade
and one grade only - The Grade.
He didn’t care about reading, writing, or arithmetic. He only
cared about The Grade. After he checked The Grade, he was
finished with our report cards. (My mother on the other hand
was a completely different story.)
Don’t get me wrong, my father believed in education. His room
looked like a library. He had a college degree and a doctorate,
but he only expressed concern about The Grade.
He told me, “The only grade that I want to see is conduct.
Conduct is The Grade and the only grade that matters.”
He said he got that from his father.
As I get older, I understand and appreciate more and more the
great wisdom of my father. Nearly all of the counseling that I
do as a minister involves someone “acting up” in one form or
another. In other words, someone isn’t conducting himself
properly.
MOst of the children in schools have very high scholastic averages. I am
proud of them for that, but I am even more pleased by The Grade.
How’s your grade in The Grade?
