Rediffiland ' Island?

How delightfully and rightly does Rediff call its blog line 'iland'. The 'iland' is a lovely coinage, stressing on the evergreen ego. It hints at a kind of belonging that every 'ilander', as I may put it, share. Or rather, is it a sense of possession that happily inflates the 'me' in every single mortal, be it a layman or an intellectual. It gives you the feeling of owning a 'land' or, more precisely, an arena, without having to pay for it. Isn't that cool? In this light, it could well have been named the 'Myland' or 'Me-land', both of which denote a very obvious sense of ego.

Then why 'iland'? Most of us, I am sure must have noticed the reason behind this ' it is the intended pun of 'island'. Helping us to travel to a faraway exotic island in Noah's Ark with a huge battalion of islanders, it undoubtedly gives us a fanciful image. Fleeing off to an off-land shore, presumably not known to the world whom I otherwise 'know', mingling with a whole new variant and exciting bunch of similar fliers and cut off from all kinds of communicative devices like cell phones and emails, can be a hands-on exhilarating idea in itself. Does Rediffiland not give us a taste of this escape?

Well, I admit that this itself is a mark of civilization with the cyber-world strongly and undeniably associated, from which I would like to flee awhile at times, but it does lend a similar sense of freedom, doesn't it?

With Rediffiland it is almost like running off to an island, which 'I' own and which is 'my' land, with so many other like-minded mortals on it who, too, share a similar feeling. Exuding a sense of ownership, belonging, intimacy and kinship Rediffiland has been just rightly christened.

This post reminds me of an old Harry Belafonte song my dad used to sing “Island in the Sun”. It goes something like “Oh island in the sun, built to me by my father’’s hand, all my days, I will sing in praise, of its forests, waters and shining sand”. I “met” so many wonderful people on iLand…and for that, it has my gratitude :)
