Israel inherits the Arab Spring

In an unprecedented move, Israeli president Shimon Peres has shed Israel’s image of not identifying with the Arab Spring by announcing that it backed regime change in Syria. Peres’ stirring call is a clever attempt to stoke the fires in Syria; there would be nothing like it if a Lebanon-like civil war erupted and Arabs, Kurds and Turks slaughtered one another. Israel is distressed that Turkey is backing away from a confrontation with the Syrian regime and that the Syria-Iran axis is showing staying power. Read my article in Asia Times on the templates of the situation around Syria.
