All Seniors Aren’t Senile

An elderly, white-haired man walked into a jewellery store one Friday evening with a beautiful young
blonde at his side.

The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a £5,000 ring. The old man said,

 ”No, I’d like to

see something more special.”

At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over. “Here’s a

stunning ring at only £40,000,” he said.

The young lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said,

“We’ll take it.”

The jeweller asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, “By cheque. I know you need to make sure my

cheque clears so I’ll write it now, and you can call the bank on Monday morning to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up on

Monday afternoon,” he said..

On Monday morning, the jeweller ‘phoned the old man and said “Sir, there’s no money in that account.”

“I know,” said the old man, “but let me tell you ,how wonderful   my weeekend was”

YOU ARE ONE OF THE LUCKIEST

I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, ‘This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received.’

I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.

The angel then said to me, ‘This is the Packaging and Delivery Section.  Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them. ‘I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. ‘This is the Acknowledgment Section,’ my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed ‘How is it that there is no work going on here?’ I asked.

‘So sad,’ the angel sighed. ‘After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments. ‘

‘How does one acknowledge God’s blessings?’ I asked.

‘Simple,’ the angel answered. Just say,
‘Thank you, Lord.’

‘What blessings should they acknowledge? ‘ I asked.

‘If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.’

‘And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity. ‘

‘If you woke up this morning with more health than illness….
You are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day.’

‘If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation.. .
you’re ahead of 700 million people in the world..’

‘If you can attend a church-temple, without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death
you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world.’

‘If your parents are still alive and still married…
you are very rare.’

‘If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm,
you’re unique to all those in doubt and despair.’

Ok, what now? How can I start?

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you as very special and you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.

Have a good day, count your blessings, and if you care to, pass this along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are.

ATTN: Acknowledge Dept.

‘Thank you Lord, for giving me the ability to share this message and for giving me so many wonderful people with whom to share it.’

If you have read this far, and are thankful for all that you have been blessed with, how can you not send it on????
I thank God for everything, especially for all my family and friends!!

PREVENT HEART ATTACK: LOWER CHOLESTEROL

PREVENT YOUR HEART ATTACK: LOWER CHOLESTEROL

Get the tools you need to help lower cholesterol — and reduce your risk of disease — starting now.

Achieving lower cholesterol is one of the best ways to protect yourself from heart attack and stroke. A fat-like substance found in the blood, cholesterol can build up and form deposits in your arteries. These cholesterol deposits can clog arteries — or in some cases completely block — the passage of blood and oxygen to the heart. The result, for hundreds of thousands of people every year, is chest pain, heart attack, or other cardiovascular problems.

There are two kinds of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. HDL is often called the “good” kind of cholesterol because it helps remove unneeded cholesterol from the body. LDL is the “bad” cholesterol; it’s made up primarily of fat and is a particular risk factor for heart disease.

So when you set out to lower cholesterol, you need to know your HDL number, your LDL number, and your total cholesterol number (which is not the total of your HDL and LDL cholesterol) too.

Total Cholesterol (mg/dL)

HDL (mg/dL) GOOD CHOLESTEROL

LDL (mg/dL)BAD CHOLESTROL

Best: Below 200

Men: 40-50

Best: Below 130

Borderline: 200-239

Women: 40-60

Borderline: 130-159

High risk: 240

High risk: Below 40

High: 160 or above

If any of your cholesterol numbers are in the high risk category, you’re at an increased risk for heart disease — which may lead to heart attack.

The good news is you have several options to help you get back in the cholesterol safety zone. These four options can all work separately — or together — to lower cholesterol, and keep it under control.

  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Medications

Diet to Lower Cholesterol

The body gets cholesterol in two ways: by making it and from food. Most of the cholesterol we eat comes from animal fats found in foods such as meat, butter, margarine, milk, and fish. One of the easiest ways to lower cholesterol is to lower your intake of certain kinds of fats.

Just as there is “good” cholesterol and “bad” cholesterol, there are “good” fats and “bad” fats. To keep your cholesterol low, your total dietary fat intake shouldn’t be more than 25% to 35% of your diet — and most of those fats should be the good kind, like vegetable fats (monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats), and omega-3 fatty acids, found mostly in fish.

To help lower LDL cholesterol, you’ll want to avoid or reduce saturated fats (usually found in animal products like meats, eggs, and dairy), and trans fats, which are formed when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil (think French fries and doughnuts).

A quick way to tell the difference between animal fats and vegetable fats is that animal fats are usually solid at room temperature, while vegetable fats are liquid at room temperature,” says Antonio Gotto, MD, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, in New York City.

So fill up on the healthy fats found in vegetable oils, nuts, avocados, and salmon, and cut back on higher-fat foods like red meat, whole milk, and of course, those tempting chips and pastries.

CAN THE DRUGS MAKE YOU BLIND

SIMPLE DRUGS IN THE EYES CAN MAKE YOU BLIND

Allergic conjunctivitis is a very common disease , specially in children. The condition is known as SPRING CATARRAH.

The commonest & very effective drugs used belong to steroid ( Cortisone ) group. Quite often, a specialist may prescribe this drug for 5-15 days but the patient goes on using this drug without consulting the doctor. The drug affects the outflow of fluid from inside the eye, thereby , gradually increasing the intraocular pressure, resulting in GLAUCOMA, which can cause the eye totally blind.

Steroids drops if used for 2-4 months, can also cause CATARACT even in young children.

BEWARE OF STEROID DROPS & AVOID SELF OR CHEMIST ADVISED MEDICATION.

WALK BEST MEDICINE

INACTIVITY IS TODAY, THE LEADING PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE WORLD, SECOND ONLY TO TOBACO USE

Walking energizes you and stills your mind to fully relax. You experience a physical and a spiritual upliftment.

The oxygen that you get early in the morning also gives you great amount of energy to your whole body. Your joints, especially the knee joint becomes subtle. By constantly moving your joints, you increase your blood circulation in a way that can only be achieved with your daily morning walk.

FORTY MINUTES WALK, FIVETIMES A WEEK, WITH SPEED OF 5KM /HR IS IDEAL. IT BURNS ABOUT 300 CALORIES & CAN REDUCE YOUR WEIGHT BY 5-7 KG IN A YEAR

WALKING IS THE BEST MEDICINE

It works to build fitness, slimness and cardiovascular health and helps with relaxation.

WALKING AND BACKPAIN

Taking a walk regularly is one of the best things you can do for your back. It promotes muscular development, increases circulation, and speeds up the release of endorphins which provide a natural “high”.

WALKING AND OSTEOPOROSIS

. Calcium and exercise are the keys to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Walking may help you combat it. The studies show that a walk of just half an hour, four times a week, can help prevent osteoporosis.

WALKING AND BLOOD PRESSURE

Regular walking can reduce high blood pressure - hypertension - by making the heart work more efficiently and by improving the circulation. It has been shown that blood pressure can be reduced by weight loss. Regular walking combined with a low fat, high fiber-diet is an excellent form of weight control. There are other ways in which you can help yourself to reduce high blood pressure:-

WALKING AND CHOLESTEROL

Cholesterol is transported in the blood by lipoproteins. There are two types of lipoproteins - High density (HDLs) and Low density (LDLs). HDLs are called “good” and LDLs “bad” cholesterol. The higher your HDL level the lower the risk of heart disease.

Stress can also affect your cholesterol levels. Regular walking can increase the levels of “good” cholesterol in the blood, reducing chances of a heart attack. So try to avoid stress - and relax. Go for a walk.

WALKING AND HEART

Regular walking may reduce the risk of a heart attack by half. It can help to lower the risk of coronary heart diseases as there is a link between vigorous physical exercise and a low incidence of heart failure.

WALKING ANG SELF CONFIDENCE

When you feel fit and healthy your self-confidence increases and you feel more able to cope with the demands mode on you. Time spent walking means time taken off from the stresses of daily life. As a result you feel less anxious. Regular exercise can increase the levels of endorphins - naturally secreted hormones - that appear to work in the brain, increasing a sense of well being. And this feeling of contentment in turn increases your Self confidence.

FRIENDS BE CAREFUL OF YOUR BONES

FRIENDS BE CAREFUL OF YOUR BONES

With age our bones get porous & fragile and liable to fracture even with a small fall.

Children & young persons form bones but with advancing age the bones get depleted. 99 percent of the body calcium is found in bones and teeth. The remaining 1.0 percent is found in cells, blood and body fluids. Calcium is needed for our heart muscles & nerve to function properly and for blood clotting. Bones act as store house for calcium, which is used by the body & replaced mainly by the diet. If enough calcium is not consumed, the body takes it from the bones and make them fragile.

RISK FACTORS FOR OSTEOPOROSIS:

Age is the most important risk factor. In most women, the pace of Osteoporosis picks up sharply after menopause since the body's estrogen drops significantly. In males, the process of osteoporosis is delayed and not so severe.

Dairy products, leafy vegetables (spinach), fish, animal proteins, fruits etc are rich source of calcium. Vitamin D formed in the skin is very useful. Apart from estrogen deficiency, osteoporosis can occur due to alcoholism, hyperthyroidism, liver & Kidney disease, taking of steroid drugs etc. Increase in salt intake causes calcium loss from the body

REMEDY:

Eat lot of dairy products and leafy vegetables and other food rich in calcium. Expose your body to early morning sunlight. Exercise and undertake morning walk which shall strengthen your bones.

After the age of 40, get the bone scan for calcium ( BMD test) and if advised take the oral supplement of calcium & vitamin D.

Vitamin D is important to absorb the calcium.

Happy News: FDA has approved Denosumab (AMGEN) which can be injected twice a year to prevent/ treat Osteoporosis. Reclast( Novartis) and Fablyn( Pfizer) are other drugs under active consideration.

+COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME(CVS)

COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME (CVS)

Prof Dr M. R. Jain MS, FICS, FACLP, FAMS

Web: MRJ-JAINEYE.COM

With the increasing use of computers, the Computer Vision Syndrome is becoming a great matter of concern, even in very young patients.

For Computer use, one needs,

1. Perfect Vision at 20 to 22 inches distance

2. Avoidance of Computer Glare

3. Prevention of Dryness of Eyes.

The main symptoms of use of computer are: headache, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, depression, dry irritated eyes with foreign body sensations & difficulty in refocusing of eyes.

Remedy:

Perfect Vision: Eyes must have perfect normal vision for distance & near both with or without glasses. An astigmatic error of even 0.25 or extremely minor hypermetropia can cause all these problems.

For persons above 38-40 years, there must be separate power for computer distance. If the patient distance vision is also defective, than the patient must ideally wear Conventional Progressive (Multifocal) lenses or Occupational progressive lenses that correct near, intermediate, and, up to a point, distance vision. For those persons, who are involved in intensive computer work, they must use D- Bifocal lenses, having upper segment for computer work, corrected for 20 inches distance and lower near segment for reading, corrected for 16 inches distance.

Glare. Computer Monitor must be placed in such a position to minimize glare. Spectacles must be fitted with high quality anti glare (A. R) lenses, preferably resin lenses.

Dryness of Eyes: Dryness of eyes has become a major problem and gives nasty symptoms of irritation, foreign body sensation, blurring of vision, photophobia and frequent desire to rub the eyes.

Remedy: 1.The monitor must be kept 3-5 inches lower to the level of eyes to avoid dryness of eyes.

2. Generally a person blinks 15- 17 times in a minute. During computer use blinking can reduce to 5-7 times a minute. Hence, one must form a habit to blink voluntarily or keep the eyes closed for some time.

3 Air conditioners also cause dryness.

4 Don't sit directly under the fan or in front of a window where you get a breeze.

5 Keep preservative free artificial drops handy which can be instilled 3-4 times a day. These drops are Vel Drops, Refresh Tear Drops, Lubrex drops, Ocumoist or Moisol 'Z, Eyemist etc. But it is ideal to consult an Ophthalmologist.
