Diwali celebrations are spread over six days in some of North India. All the days except Diwali are named according to their
designation in the Hindu calendar.

Diwali being festival of lights, across India people celebrate it via
symbolic diyas or kandils (colorful paper lanterns) as an integral part
of Diwali decorations.

1. Vasu Baras
(27 Ashvin or 12 Krishna Paksha Ashvin): Baras means 12th day and vasu
means cow. On this day cow and calf is worshipped. Since it is believed
that cow is symbol of God, Diwali is begun by worshipping cow and calf.

2. Dhanatrayodashi or Dhan teras
(28 Ashvin or 13 Krishna Paksha Ashvin): Dhan means "wealth" and
Trayodashi means "13th day". Thus, as the name implies, this day falls
on the 13th day of the second half of the lunar month. It is an
auspicious day for shopping of utensils and gold.This day is also
regarded as the Jayanti of God Dhanvantri who came out during the
churning of the great ocean by the gods and the demons. Dhanvantri
Jayanti

3. Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi
(29 Ashvin or 14 Krishna Paksha Ashvin): Chaturdashi is the fourteenth
day on which demon Narakasura was killed. It signifies the victory of
good over evil and light over darkness (Gujarati: Kali Chaudas).

In south India, this is the actual day of festivities. Hindus wake
up way before dawn as early as 2:00 in the morning, have a fragrant oil
bath and wear new clothes. They light small lamps all around the house
and draw elaborate kolams /rangolis outside their homes. They perform a
special puja with offerings to Lord Sri Krishna or Lord Sri Vishnu, as
he liberated the world from the demon Narakasura on this day. It is
believed that taking a bath before sunrise, when the stars are still
visible in the sky is equivalent to taking a bath in the holy Ganges.
Hence, when people greet each other in the morning, they ask "Have you
performed your Ganga Snaanam?".

After the puja, children burst firecrackers heralding the defeat of
the demon. As this is a day of rejoicing, many will have very elaborate
breakfasts and lunches and meet family and friends. In the evening,
lamps are again lit and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped and offered
special dishes. This being a no moon day, many will offer special
tarpana (offerings of water and sesame seeds) to their ancestors. This
day is also called as Roop Chaturdashi

4. Lakshmi Puja (30 Ashvin
or 15 Krishna Paksha Ashvin): Lakshmi Puja marks the most important day
of Diwali celebrations. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the goddess of
wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, and then light
lamps all across the streets and homes to welcome prosperity and
wellbeing.

5. Govardhan Puja (1 Kartika
or 1 Shukla Paksha Kartika) : Also called Annakut, is celebrated as the
day Krishna defeated Indra. Lord Krishna taught people to worship
nature, as mountains bring rains to earth. That was the reason to stop
worshiping Indra. His was the message that we should take care of our
nature. For Annakut a mountain of food is decorated symbolizing
Govardhan mountain lifted by Lord Krishna. In Maharashtra it is
celebrated as Padva or BaliPratipada. The day commemorates King Bali.
Men present gifts to their wives on this day.In Gujarat, it is
celebrated as New Year, as Vikram Samvat starts on this day.

6. Bhaiduj (also Bhayyaduj,
Bhaubeej or Bhayitika) (2 Kartikaor 2 Shukla Paksha Kartika): on this
day, brothers and sisters meet to express their love and affection for
each other (Gujarati: Bhai Bij, Bengali: Bhai Phota). Most Indian
festivals bring together families, Bhaiduj brings together married
sisters and brothers, and is a significant festive day.

Collection of Diwali SMS

October 15th, 2008

The auspicious day of Diwali is decided by the moon position and
according to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya or no moon day is when Diwali
is celebrated. This year Diwali is on 28th of October 2008. Diwali
holds an important meaning among the Hindus, since, the day is reckoned
with Lord Rama's coronation ceremony as the King of Ayodhya after his
return to the kingdom from 14 years of exile along with his wife Sita
& brother Laxman after killing the demon, King Ravana. People
celebrated this occasion by lighting diyas and candles to drive away
the darkness of amavasya. In parts of India it is celebrated as the
Hindu New Year and businesses consider this as an auspicious day start
the business new year. People send greetings and cards to each other on
Diwali and in modern times they send SMS. We offer a set of Diwali SMS
for you to send your friends and relatives.

As the candlelight flame,
Ur life may always be happiness' claim;

As the mountain high, U move without sigh;

like the white linen flair, Purity is always an affair;

As sunshine creates morning glory, fragrance fills years as flory;

with the immaculate eternal smile, attached to u mile after mile;

All darkness is far away, As light is on its way;

Wish all of u a very happy diwali.

Indian Railways

October 11th, 2008

Indian Railways is India's lifeline and the most popular means of transportation. It is the lifeline of cities like Mumbai where millions of people travel by Railways to works and back. It is probably one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting eighteen million passengers daily. Indian Railways is the world's largest employer, with more than 1.6 million employees. Indian

railway's network cover a total length of more than 63,327 km. Indian Railways currently (2008) owns about 225,000 wagons, 45,000 coaches and 8300 locomotives and ran more than 18,000 trains daily, including about 8,984 passenger trains and 9,387 goods trains. Railways were first
introduced to India in 1853!! On 16 April 1853, the first passenger train service was inaugurated between Bori Bunder, Bombay and Thane.
Covering a distance of 34 km, it was hauled by three locomotives, Sahib, Sindh and Sultan. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the
world.

Nokia 5800 Touch Screen Phone like iPhone

October 7th, 2008

Nokia's touch screen phone is finally in the preview stage. The 5800 XpressMusicis all set to launch soon as Nokia's challenge to Google's phone and Apple iPhone. Its called or nicknamed the Tube and the device has a number of typical Nokia stuff as is visible on the various videos on YouTube.

NOKIA 5800 Demo VIDEO: CLICK HERE

The LCD is 640 x 360. The dull screen surface cuts down on glare, but casual users often prefer glossy screens for watching visual stuff like images and video. We hear that the speaker is very loud. It's not the clearest thing in the world, but if you want to share a song or something with a friend, they'll certainly hear it loud and clear. The 3.2 megapixel camera is getting good reviews and is said to focus well and takes great pictures. It also had things like GPS, WiFi and a side-loading microSD slot (there will be a free 8GB card hopefully). It is wrapped up into an elongated, chubby package, hence the Tube. Its probably too big to put in the pocket of a tight pant but still a nice size. It will also come with apps like Nokia Maps.

For more pictures and video : click here

It's a S60 series phone, which is so popular in India and from the look of it you will not be disappointed. Nokia's seems to have done enough to turn the traditional interface into touchable one, nicely sized icons, adding finger-friendly buttons unlike the iPhone. What Nokia probably hasn't quite figured out is consistency, requiring double taps in some places, single taps in others. It is said that, scrolling through most lists requires dragging a scroll bar, pulling down as the list flies up, but the browser has touch and drag scrolling. But then the advantage is that most of us are using some S60 phone and we will get used to it quickly.

Nokia Iphone Type Phone Image

What's seems to be new is a touch-sensitive button above the screen that drops down the Media Bar for access to music, movies, photos, the browser and sharing. There's also a new home screen with a "Fav Four" of sorts across the top and little else. Tap and you can get a quick look at recent calls, messages and even related RSS feeds. Luckily, the traditionally familiar S60 home screen is also available.

Falguni Pathak Mumbai dandiya

October 3rd, 2008

Log on to www.mybandra.com

We are in the middle of Navratri 2008 and Dandiya is the biggest things for young and old in Mumbai Suburbs. As always Falguni Pathak
is the queen of Dandiya in Mumbai. She has been able to carve out an
excellent niche for herself and Mumbaikars cant stop saying Falguni
rocks!!

DNA in their article recently talks about all the singers this Navratri" But
while the Dandiya queen - as she is popularly known - is still going
strong, there are many talented youngsters waiting in the wings to
prove their mettle, and maybe even usurp her throne.

"After Falguni Pathak, the next person that comes to mind is
Devang Patel," says Amit Sana, the runner up of Indian Idol (Season 1),
who finds it difficult to imagine the festival without the celebrated
performer. "The key is to be innovative. Given a chance, maybe I, too,
can make it," he says.

Debojit Dutta, a participant in the SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2009,
shares the same views as Sana. "Falguni will rule the Dandiya roost for
the next few years, but I'm hoping that one day, I'll be able to step
in."
