Known also as the Paksi Kashi of Karnataka is a
bird sanctuary that is located in the Mandya District of the state of
Karnataka in India tours.
It is one of the important tourist destinations in the Mysore city.
It is located three kilometres away from the historic town of
Srirangapatna.
Ranganthittu Bird sanctuary has a very
interesting history. The bird sanctuary, situated on the banks of
Kaveri River, includes a group of six islets. These islets came into
being when a dam was built across the Kaveri River in the 18th century. A
well known Indian ornithologist Dr Salim Ali noted that due to the
abundance of aquatic insects in the isles, birds were frequently seen
there and quickly made it their nesting ground. It was true him and his
vision that the Paksi Kashi of Karnakata was made an area of wildlife sanctuary
by the in Wodeyar kings of Mysore in 1940. The sanctuary has now become
a paradise for bird watchers, nature lovers as well as wildlife
enthusiasts. The sanctuary can boast of having about 2080 foreign
tourists not to mention the about 2 million tourists that visited there
in between 1999 and 2000. india wildlife tours
The climate there is favourable which is good
news to potential tourists as it stays between 23C and 29C. The only
set back is that in June the southwest monsoon peaks throughout the
Karnataka state, very heavy rainfall accompanied by water logging and
mild flooding has been reported in the area but apart from that the
weather is absolutely stable. So you can still jet in there at all
other months of the year. corbett national park
The sanctuary is a very interesting place to
visit. Popularly known as the paradise of birds, it is home to many
varieties of birds including spoon bills, open bill storks, darters,
white ibis, little cormorants, egret, heron, partridge, river tern,
stone plougher and others. Some of these birds origins have been
traced back to places like Siberia, Australia and North America. Many
birds lay their eggs on these Islets and local authorities have
created more islets to make way for eggs to be laid. Birds start
arriving at the sanctuary in December, lay their eggs and go with
their little ones then return the following year. Boats are available
for tourists to go round the islets and more than often, they’ll spot
different varieties of birds and the oarsmen also serve as good
tourist guides. The Kaveri Riverbank also offers an excellent spot for
picnics.
Apart from Birds, the park is a host to mammals and different trees.
Some important details that you might need if you
are travelling there are definitely connections that you’ll have with
the outside world.
