The Path of an Evil?

This will be my most boring blog. But after reading about the Ram Sena incident I had to write this, for my own sake. In my opinion, all of us had a hand in the Ram Sena incident; all of us who thought, and still think, any of the colored letters below; including females.

The Solution? How about answering the first question with "it is her wish"? Let's start with that question.

Question: How do you want to raise your daughter, Western or Indian style?

A: I want my daughter to be a traditional homely Indian girl.

Question: What if she falls for the western culture?

B: I will try to convince her by pointing out the greatness of our culture and traditions.

Question: What if that doesn't work? (Read the same question after each line till F)

C: I will get upset with her and express my unhappiness.

D: I will get a little angry. It is justified as it is for her own good. Our culture is great.

E: I will shout at her. After all, I cannot let her spoil her life.

F: I will threaten to slap her. Of course, I won't hit her as it is really wrong.

What if she understands it is just a threat and does not back down?

G: I will slap her once, to prove it is not a threat. I am doing it for her own good.

H: All fathers are like me. They don't want their daughters to be westernized. But they just can't get harsh with their kids due to love and other weaknesses. I must do something.

I: I will fight westernization of our culture. This way I will make true Indians happy.

J: I will raid on Valentine's Day and make sure they don't happen. I won't hurt people.

K: I will raid pubs and discos. Maybe, some violence will happen for the larger good.

L: I will threaten westernized girls; scare, but not hurt, them. Their fathers will thank me.

M: Unless a couple of girls are hurt publicly, the remaining girls won't be scared enough to stop this westernization. I will do that. The affected girls and their parents may think I am a villain, the media may think so. But the other fathers, a lot of them true Indians and champions of our culture, will be happy that I stopped their girls from westernization.

What is an acceptable dress code?

N: I won't accept anything other than the traditional Indian sari.

O: Sari and Salwar are ok. No jeans please.

P: Jeans is fine as long as it is not skin tight.

Q: Jeans is ok as it covers the entire body. No sleeveless or skirts.

R: Full length skirts are fine as they don't reveal anything. I am against anything shorter.

S: Shin length skirts and capris are fine. Nothing shorter, we are Indian.

T: Knee length is ok. But thighs should not be shown. There is a limit.

U: I am broad minded. Mini skirts are ok. But these bikini shows are deplorable.

V: Bikinis are fine. But we should not be so westernized as to allow nudity on screen.

Most probably all of us are one of the alphabets here; the leap to next letter is easy and acceptable. A jump from A to M may look unreasonable. Not so any one step, I think if you are honest. You might not implement the next step. Somebody who likes you may do it. Somebody who likes him may go to the next step. So on to the last logical step.

Thank whatever the hell this god is that Hindu culture didn't have burqas as part of their "tradition" and "culture". At least, in the event of the Talibanization equivalent of India (assuming, of course, India isn't islamicized by then) we will see a few beautiful faces, hair (if not covering it will be allowed), and hopefully a few smiles of girls on the roads.

In the meanwhile, we'll continue our fight with the decadent west and protect our great culture. The girl over there in a mini-skirt is a threat to our safety and nation. Or maybe she is "fair game"; she probably has a lot of "experience". She probably "deserves" a little teasing and petting. And we will "never let" our wife or daughter wear such stuff.

As men, we are the protectors of women and we will force them for their own protection.

As women, women more westernized than us are bitches and morally loose.

Anyway, why bother with all this inconvenient stuff looking at ourselves in the mirror? Let's do the easy thing where all of us can agree with each other. Let's all join hands and blame the filthy politicians. Along with that, we'll write blogs denouncing Ram Sena. After all, we all need our veils to save us from our own eyes.

A Non-revolutionary Revolution

Silent revolutions are usually not appreciated as they ought to be. Maybe because people love revolutions, dream of leading one, and have their names etched in history forever. Whatever be the situation, we always find a way to call for revolutions. This blog is at least a couple of months late. It should have been written after Obama was elected the President of the United States. But, I was on a break. However, he is about to assume office sometime today. So I thought maybe this is the occasion for it. Now you might be thinking this is another Obama eulogising piece. The hell it is; I don't give a damn about that man and I don't know or care much about him. This is about us.

Some 6-7 years back, I was discussing with friends. They were telling me in awed tones about accurate predictions of ancient seers. I was irritated. I said, "I challenge that in the next 100 years USA will have an African-American and a woman president. If it happens, do I become a great seer? It is logic. You can say anything. If it is unlikely, give it greater time and it will happen". Though not exactly the point I was making then, I estimated US will take 50 to 100 years before an African-American or a woman will be president-elect.

And then, the Democratic candidature came down to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I remember Santhi asking me, "Do you think one of them will become President?" I said, "I think it is great that a woman or an African-American is going to be a candidate. But I think whoever is elected will lose. The parties will be afraid to nominate these groups at least for the next 3-4 elections. I expect another 30 years before they are elected". As the election neared, following various polls and news items, I knew I had a great chance to be wrong. Even though, this is a time I would be glad to be proved wrong, when pushed, I thought the race issue and the Hussein middle name issue will scare Americans off him. And then he was elected. Mankind, quite often, manages to give me pleasant surprises.

Importantly, he didn't have to seek sympathy or call for African-Americans to unite and fight white tyranny. He worked as part of the system, like any other candidate before him; and he was elected the 1st African-American president. This is an event of unprecedented historical significance, not because he is the 1st colored president, but because historically, hatred and fear precede such events. For once, let's look beyond Obama, and look at the system. Contrast this to our calls for hanging people we think immoral, banning stuff we don't like etc. This is a 1st time an event of such significance was achieved so coolly.

America bashing is a passport to being accepted an intellectual among a lot of our circles. Be that as it may, however, maybe we can learn from the processes in place in American institutions through which those supposedly racial guys are able to pull off such feats; the feat in question is not Obama's election, but the fact that he came through the system, not despite it, in a country with over 75% whites. Maybe, we can start by stopping our search for a messiah to save the country or world. Our eagerness to deify individuals, among them Obama, is pathetically comic. Let's start looking at adapting systems and processes.

Momentous events must come about by processes that avoid internal contradictions; they take time. If you just choose an end point and want to reach there overnight, it becomes a seed for future hatred; a seed that will eventually overturn the status quo again.

Tips for Winning Debates on Blogs

Attitude: Start with "I am positive and optimistic". Let the opponent go to the topic; you stay on this. Though irrelevant, you look good if things heat up. Let him argue; you try to find flaws. Don't prove anything; just prevent him. Make allegations; ask him to disprove you. Importantly, refuse to be convinced whatever he says. Use his failure to convince as proof of you being right. These methods also ensure his tiredness to counter, and you can claim to out-arguing and outlasting him. Add smile symbols when the veiled abuses start; make the length and number of them proportional to the intensity of abuses. They irritate.

Morality: State, "I believe in peace and love. I will fight till my last breath for what is right". Everybody fights for what he believes is right. But in an argument, this establishes your opponent as a violent hate-monger, and fights for the wrong. To irritate further and include others on your side, say, "I am sure all right thinking people will agree with me".

Grow up: Not much works better than, "I used to think like you long back. But I grew out of all that" in gaining an elderly, knowledgeable status in an argument. It will irritate your opponent, but basically he can do nothing about it. You are saying that he is a kid, immature, and as he gains wisdom like you, he will eventually learn of his errors. This is a master stroke. If your opponent says that you are calling him immature and all that, you can say, "I didn't mean it like that. You are very impulsive, and you have a lot to learn".

Not Applicable: An excellent way of wriggling out if cornered is by saying, "What you say maybe right. But it is not applicable in the present time". It would be foolish to try to prove it. Challenge your opponent to disprove it. We have numerous situations in the present. You throw in difficult situations at your opponent and hear him out. Try never to be convinced; try not to understand; forget past conversations and repeat your questions; don't make connections between arguments. Make it his job to convince you. You just have to be as dumb as possible. Never forget your goal ' win the debate at any cost.

Believe: The mother of all arguments, "Reason cannot explain everything. So I prefer to believe". It, of course, has no place in a rational argument. But who cares? It works and that is all that matters. Of course, current reason cannot explain everything. All of us know that. And, beliefs cannot explain everything either. But the beauty here is that you no longer have to defend your statements, as you already abandoned reason. Your beliefs don't need logical defenses. You win. An equivalent sentence is, "I speak from my heart".

Personality: Twist a misunderstand-able argument into an obvious wrong and discredit the person; be shocked over "basic" mistakes; his 100 good arguments will count for zero. This way you can disprove Einstein's relativity by pointing to his grammatical mistakes. Keep saying "Wars, corruption, terrorism, injustices etc must end". Say them first, ignore your opponent's agreement and repeat; it will sound like he supports wars, corruption etc.

Withdrawal: Find something offensive in your opponent's words, and withdraw. It helps to save face if you are lost or tired. Never forget the great misinterpretation line; it helps most of us in pretending outrage against religious atrocities. It will help everywhere else.

If you think I meant you in any sentence of the blog, you are probably right. However, if you think I meant “only” you, I don’t think I will agree with you. I can think of at least 5-6 examples for each “tip”. I myself used them all at some stage or the other in my life :) Best of luck.

Our Leader - Our Servant

A village decided to give out an advertisement to manage their affairs. The advertisement read thus:

Wanted ' A Person to serve our village

Qualifications ' Kindheartedness, a willingness to put others before self and family, a zeal to serve for the welfare of others without expecting anything in return.

Duties ' The village has 1000 people. Each will contribute 10000 a year as taxes. The candidate is expected to manage the 10 million to provide the village with roads, electricity, water, food, entertainment etc, make sure they are put to best use and that everybody in the village is safe and happy.

Contract Length ' Five years

Salary Compensation ' 10 a month

Application fee ' 100

Candidate selection ' It is based on an election by the village populace. The candidate should spell out his plans to the people and they will choose the candidate they like. The cost of campaigning is expected to be 100000 and the candidate is expected to bear these expenses.

Special Request ' Honest, service minded and non-corrupt only must apply.

The village got some ten applications. The villagers selected a candidate who said, "If you select me, I will provide you free electricity, free food, free housing. I and my family will work night and day for the welfare of the village. I will sell my house and my wife's gold, and the clothes on my back and give it to you. Nothing gives me more happiness than sacrificing whatever is mine for you, my people, my brothers, sisters, fathers, sons, daughters and mothers" The villagers were moved to tears and voted for him massively.

After a couple of months, the villagers were again moved to tears, of a different kind, as the candidate bought a new house and car, and went abroad with his family for a vacation for a couple of months. The villagers went to a neighboring village and met with an elder there. They asked him, "What should we do? We gave him a five year contract. He took our 10 million and left. We were paying him 10 a month. If it is less, he shouldn't have taken the job. We had 9 other applicants. We want to kill these corrupt filthy politicians". The sagely elder said, "Yes, we need a revolution. Unite and fight for a great tomorrow. Never give up. Also, the next time make sure the advertisement is of bigger size, and use variety color fonts for honest, service minded, and non-corrupt. Can I apply next time?"

And the next day, the sun rose in the east. It did again five years later. Always, as usual!

Reviews and Rebirths

Since I started writing diaries in my pre-teens the New Year has always been the occasion for reviewing the year and starting the next one afresh with a new vision and goals. Not even my birthday gives me the same sense of quantum break. It's like a rebirth. Anyway, I am back. Hi, everybody and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. Now an update

Time away from Iland ' I enjoyed my time off from iland. In the two months, I finished the Harry Potter book series; I need to be able to tell good stories to my future kids. I also started the Great Gatsby and Catch-22, neither of which caught on yet. I also saw a lot of movies; and I will watch Satyajit Ray's Aparajito and Pather Panchali soon. I am usually scared of "great" Indian movies. I gathered my courage based on VT's recommendation a few months back. Wish me luck. My work is in great shape too. There was a lot of time.

Also, I have this habit of picking "Friend of the year" and others like girl, actor, insult, compliment etc for my diary. Similarly, I will have two titles for the blogging world.

Best Blogger of the Year ' I cannot look past VT for this. To be relevant, a blogger must not turn off too many people. To be useful, he must not utter inanities everyone knows. This guy makes the favorites list of a diverse set of bloggers and he makes strong points in witty layers so that readers who prefer not knowing the inconvenient message do it without damaging personal equations. Also, he has no incessant need to have others agree with him, which a lot of us have causing a lot of friction. Others, like Thoughtworks and Ice Candy, do not have that need either. However, they lose out on other parameters.

Recently, VT managed to change my opinion of a film. I thought "Rock On" was a very good movie and had it on my laptop. That is, till I read his, "Could never figure out what was so secretive, sad and dark about a Rock Band splitting?" There was only one other guy I met in my life who could change my mind with such refreshingly few words. VT has his negatives; especially his long absences. But his positives far outweigh them.

Blogger Friend of the Year ' I am not sure this title will stay next year. But this year, I will acknowledge Ice Candy for his stand during my fallout at Lissome. I always thought it an insult to have blanket support, i.e. person dependent support without examining the issue; and I always will. Rather if I find others on the same side on an issue without prior personal relationships resulting in that outcome, I calculate that we have more reliability in what we say. I would not do what Ice Candy did then, and I don't think that it is wrong either. But to do it, in that way, in those circumstances needed a kind of thinking I admire.

Blogging Changes ' I intend to reduce exchanging comments. Networking is important, but so is time. So, let's see. I'll try to measure success solely on my counter. I'll also try to curb my incessant need to have others agree with me. That should make me pleasanter company. I also want to work with fellow bloggers, for better written and well referenced blogs, especially on unsupported deeply held common utterances. Contact me by email if interested. I'll do the same. We'll keep those discussions off GBs as refusal to co-author may be perceived insulting. We can display the post on both our pages after we are done. We can try to produce well researched logic driven blogs backed by reliable prior data.

I Need a KitKat

I started participating in public forums through the comments sections below the articles in rediff. I looked at it as a practice before opening my own page, which I eventually did. I had two major goals when I finally decided to blog.

1)      To find out answers to the questions on the origin of creation and how creation works.

2)      To improve myself and be useful to a few others.

I was aware that even if I could not get the answers directly from another person, the act of active participation itself would help me find the answers within myself. However, I did not expect the pace at which I would reach satisfactory (at least to me) answers; to be strictly correct, I should not call them answers. They are hypotheses, at this stage.

This is thanks largely to Nandita, Ice Candy, Vaibhav Sharma, Thoughtworks, Kush A, Jonathan Sookdeo, Bidisha, Amit Goel, Freedom Unbound, Lissome Lady, Jolly Jacob, Nadira, Gman, Rajesh Vora, Pritish Nagraj, and Sheila Das in approximately that order (plus or minus two). I may have missed a few. This is a list of people who provoked thoughts I consider worthy of thinking. Some of them I dislike, some I am indifferent to, and some I like; and I assure the reader that the position in the list is not indicative of the extent of my liking of the person, only his/her useful role in furthering my thinking.

Anyway, coming to the point, I learned a lot. Frankly, I personally think, I hit upon ideas that I was desperately hoping to be aware of 30-40 years from now, through my future kid who I thought of raising by encouraging lateral thinking and a rebellious attitude which I think are essential to push the frontiers of knowledge. But internet is an amazing medium and there is no limit to what we will know in 30 years. I grossly underestimated the capacity of mankind. I know I am one of the very few people with a generous opinion of what mankind did. There are others who recite inanities like mankind should become selfless, non-violent etc, say we are capable of it, and call that a positive attitude. I am not one of those. I think what we have done so far is something mankind can be proud of.

Anyway, since I got those ideas (expressed in I Want to Live Forever, God ' Identity, Purpose, and Modus Operandi, Infinity and Eternity, The Creator-Creation Equation etc) one of my goals stated above, at least temporarily, is reached. This causes a change to my overall vision of why I am blogging and interacting with other ilanders. With the original vision no longer applicable, I find myself disinterested in writing blogs and also visiting others' blogs. I need a break. The maximum period I will be away will be till July 8, 2009

That is the anniversary of my first blog here. I will be back to give my annual dedication to the blogger who contributed most to my thinking in the year 2008-2009. I maybe back before that. In the meanwhile, I will develop a new vision to blog and work on some of my ideas. Also work on my presentation, as many people complain of a lack of clarity in my writings. My iland will be closed to comments till I am back. However, I will be available to interact with anybody in one-on-one communications by emails. Later then!

The Creator-Creation Equation

There are three possible scenarios in which we can imagine our existence.

The Matrix Scenario ' However, unlike in the Matrix movie we don't have bodies. We are pure programs in a computer. The programmer can generate random numbers (not random for him, but random for us). He can, theoretically, predict every event in his universe as he knows the outputs of each possible set of inputs into each program. He cannot physically come into our universe, but he can dictate the events of our universe.

Basically, the programmer is creator. However, if we define the universe as everything that there is, then even the programmer's world is part of the universe. Further, the programmer won't know his future, and that of his universe, as shown in my last post.

The Single Universe Scenario ' Here we assume what we observe is all there is and that there is no meaning to the term outside our universe in either space or time. As there is no outside to the universe, there is no external god who knows our fate. As it is not possible to deterministically model our universe from inside it, we can never model our fate. The creator here is just the state of the universe before, after, and/or beyond creation.

The Blackhole Scenario ' Here we assume our universe is a blackhole embedded in a larger universe, just like the blackholes in our universe. The universe we are embedded in may also be a blackhole in a still larger universe ad infinitum*. Some, or all, blackholes in our universe may contain conscious beings. However, we are not their creators, we do not know what is going on in a blackhole in our universe, and nobody from a blackhole in our universe can escape it to come into our universe. Similarly, the beings in the universe we are embedded in are not our creators, no being in the larger universe can know what is going on in our universe, and we cannot escape our universe to move into the larger one.

Theoretically, it is possible to model a blackhole if we observed it from its birth, and if we know whatever is entering it from our universe. We can simulate the initial conditions and see how it develops based on the laws of physics. However we can never validate our model, as we can't know the inside of a blackhole. Further, there is chaos where a small error will lead to a completely different blackhole. And the only way to alter the course of that blackhole is by controlling the amount of matter that enters into it. However, as we cannot predict our own universe, this remains a random element into that model.

The matrix scenario can be a subset of the single universe scenario which in turn can be a special case of the blackhole scenario. I find the blackhole scenario most plausible. Here each blackhole has a central singularity and different creations/universes. However, the singularities of various blackholes, which we can also call creator, are essentially the same. They are the sources and sinks of everything in the blackhole. Further, as long as you are in creation, the creator does not exist and as long as you are a creator (singularity), creation does not exist. From a different spacetime, the singularity-spacetime combo appears as a blackhole. The quantum randomness is random to not only the creation but also the singularity, and it exists only in creation. But we'll discuss that in a future post.

I acknowledge Kush for holding the discussion and leading me to this post.

Is the Universe Deterministic?

A deterministic system is one in which its every state is pre-determined. If the universe were deterministic, there is no room for freewill, as every event is bound by the laws of causality. Here I examine the question whether the universe is deterministic.

I define the universe as everything that there is, was, or will be at an instant. There is no meaning to terms such as out of/before/after the universe. With that out of the way, let's look at the three sources of unpredictability of the fate of universe and its subsets.

Chaos ' Chaos is the phenomenon of small changes in initial conditions developing into large effects in the system in time. In principle, given enough information and computing power at a given instant, we can compute the function of the whole system even if it were chaotic. However, the accurcies involved make this task virtually impossible. Consider f(x) = 3.9x(1-x), start with x = 0.5, compute f(x), and make x = f(x) after each step. Do the same for x = 0.500001. The function behaves very differently after step 30. Step 94 gives a value 10000 times of the other (use excel to see). This for a difference of just 0.0002%.

Conclusion - Due to this feature, even a miniscule error in an input parameter will develop into a very large error in predictions. Therefore, it is very difficult to model the universe.

Quantum Randomness ' Is a coin toss random i.e. can we accurately predict the result of a coin toss if we know its weight distribution, the force, wind resistance, and whatever else necessary? In theory, we can. The limiting factor is that there are too many variables involved to compute the result. However, a coin toss is not strictly random and there will come a stage where we advance enough to know the result of a toss before it shows.

Civilizations will eventually evolve to mimic the most complicated patterns in nature, including artificial consciousness, stars, and galaxies. However, it is my hypothesis that no civilization will ever be able to design a purely random process. Any artificial process obeys laws of causality; randomness by definition is completely unpredictable. It is left to god to unify these contradictions to generate random processes which defines quantum events. This random process, in my opinion, is god's signature, if ever there is one.

Conclusion - As long as there is a random component in the universe, the outcomes are always probabilistic and not certainties. Therefore, the universe is not deterministic.

Infinite Regress ' When we want to predict a future state of any system, we need to know all the information in the system. For example, if we want to compute the path of a ball thrown up, we should know the mass of the ball, mass of the earth, initial velocity etc.

So, when we model the universe, we need all the data in the universe. This is impossible as light is our best means of collecting data and it has a limited speed. Further, we are a part of the universe. Therefore, our act of modeling the universe should be modeled into our model, and that model should have a copy of us trying to model that model and so on resulting in an infinite regress. Assuming we design such a model, it still cannot predict the future as it has to predict its own actions as part of the universe, as it is circular i.e. f(x) = g(f(x)). The problem is simple to understand. To measure length we need scale which is different from the object. But however different the universe is, there is no non-universe.

Conclusion - To model anything, the model should be located out of the system and should not influence it. But as we cannot leave the universe, it’s future cannot be predicted by us.

Of course, one can argue for modeling the universe from outside it. However there is no meaning to outside the universe. We can assume an out of universe god who knows our fate. But that poor guy has to assume another god out of his universe, who holds his fate.

Conclusion - If there is an external god, he can model our universe accurately. But he cannot model his own fate as he cannot leave his universe. So if we define universe as everything there is, its future cannot be predicted by anybody with 100% accuracy.

The inifinite regress idea, though not unfamiliar to me, was brought into focus in this blog by Thoughtworks; this, of course, does not mean I agree with all of that blog. I also acknowledge Nandita and Rajamohan for keeping at me to post something on this subject.

Bursting some Balloons?

Shaving in the night: When my grandfather told me, "If you shave after sunset you will lose all your money", I was a little surprised. Almost all practices we call superstitions have reasons, which may not be applicable now. This took me a while to figure out.

Shaving in the night is dangerous as there is no sun, when there was no light, and it may cause lots of cuts. However, with the advent of Thomas Edison, this goes out the window.

Loss of Memory: My grandfather said, "I am getting old. I am forgetting a lot of things these days." I was in late teens. Two days later, I was going out. After getting down the stairs I remembered something and ran back up. After going down again, I remembered something else and again ran back up. After a third repetition, I was on my way.

I remembered my grandfather. If my grandfather was in a similar state, he would have lamented his loss of memory, primarily because he was not physically able enough to run back up 3-4 times. Maybe, we should be careful not to program ourselves to lose memory.

Auspiciousness: My father would never return once he started off even if he forgot something. He would yell out what he wants or send somebody else back. According to him, his work will fail if he were to turn back. There are such things for everybody.

I am thinking, maybe, the fact that you forgot something relating to your work before you start indicates a lack of concentration on your task. Maybe, people observed that most people who reported failure turned back, which is obvious since they are more likely to fail than a person who came out of the house so completely prepared that he did not have to turn back. Maybe, a similar reasoning can be applied to other "auspicious" signs?

Train always late: Whenever we wait on a platform waiting for the train, more often than not Santhi laments, "I always observe more trains coming on the other side of the platform than the side on which we are standing." I always respond with, "That's because as soon as our train comes we leave. We notice it only when it is late; else we don't".

But she continues saying it. Albeit, now more with a smile.

Ghosts and Devils: When I was a kid, I used to believe in gods and ghosts. There was no dearth of times when I mistook a flowing curtain or misplaced pillow for a ghost. There was one instance which left me without doubt of a ghost's existence. It was 3 AM and I was going from our dormitory to the class room to study. I sensed somebody following. I turned and found nobody. I started again, and was sure that somebody was following. I turned again to find nobody. I started again only to find the ghost following me again.

I don't exactly remember whether I reasoned it then or a lot later, that it was my shadow on the wall due to the street lights, which I mistook as the ghost. Or maybe there was one?

Life is fun. It is always a pleasure to develop a theory that fits facts, whether true or not.
