Cat which smells death

Cat which smells death

This is a portion of an interesting report, reported by AP and published in The Hindu on 27th of July, 2007. [Link]

PROVIDENCE: Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours. Its accuracy level, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once it has chosen someone. It usually means the patient has less than four hours to live.

After about six months, the staff members noticed Oscar would make its own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. It would sniff and observe patients, then sit beside people ? who would end up dying in the next few hours.

Now what will you call this? Just a sixth sense? Even if it is a sixth sense, how can a cat "sniff" some event which is yet to happen? This is not at all possible. One can make out the past event by any special power, but to know the death of some one? Is this a miracle?

Does this cat see the Yamraaj ' the God of Death ' standing by the patient's cot? How else do you explain this phenomenon?

PS (3 Aug): I got to see the same news article on the Guardian, UK. This news is correct. http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,2135381,00.html

  • There are some things that science can explain. What PGR writes, is correct and can be understood. Animals have some hypersensitivity to natural events that is why they can hear, smell, or feel some things which are not perceptible by humans. But SENSING UPCOMING DEATH is something beyond scientific comprehension. Scientists can now study; does the person who is going to die send some signals, which the medical equipments are not able to map? There is tremendous opportunity to investigate the life and death phenomena.

  • there may be so many things to which our contemporary scientific knowledge is yet to reach

  • wld this be really true!!!

  • Does this means that you have to kick the cuddling cat:)….Well, on a serious note, I have heard from someone many years back that cats and dogs have extra sensitivity to some disturbing sounds (not audible to us as it does not fall in our audibility range). They are also very sensitive to certain smells (may be some chemicals released to air during our final moments). That is why they are used for predicting natural calamities including Tsunami and in war fields. Many cats and dogs have forewarned soldiers about bombing…Interesting post Kumar……PGR

  • heard about this from grand mother

  • Heard about this …sounds amzing

  • its still a mistery how a dog comes to know that his owner is getting to go to his house

  • unexplainable it is,,,,,,,,,but this happens,,,may be, we feel as if it is the human which god has created as the most powerfull, but most probably thats not true,,such things as the cat smelling death baffels all such logics and thoughts.i have my own personnel experiences which i had with my dogs,,who alarmed me by a good two hours in advance before and earthquake took place,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Intersting… some animals have these uncanny habits (although I don”t think I have heard about smelling death), but I am aware of certain types of fish which behave awkwardaly before an earthquake etc….
