Registration of marriages is compulsory now

Registration of marriages is compulsory now

At first the news seemed to be plain. But there were invisible strings attached. Supreme Court of India has made it mandatory to register within three months, all marriages, irrespective of religions and beliefs.

Do you know that so far, registration of marriages was compulsory only for Hindus? And that legal adoption is not applicable for those belonging to the minorities? The Muslim personal law board has again registered its objections over the SC ruling. It says the registrations will bring complexities in the nikaahs and they want to be excluded from this ruling.

In fact the SC direction to enforce marriage registrations is considered as a great empowering tool for women rights. There are many women who are exploited because they don't have any proof of their marriages. Registration would act as a marriage certificate and would empower the Indian woman. Government should implement this as priority and the women rights groups should also pressurize the government on this issue.

  • It is much much deeper than what it seems. It is a slow move towards Uniform Civil Code and the islamic mullahs have already raised their concerns(!?!) Read more of this yet another funny, idiosyncracy at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_civil_code

  • roy

    very good

  • It is a right decision by Sc court… Though you said women are exploited but I must say man are also exploited for that… n its beneficial for both..

  • Such things r very important, we must b ready 2 accept + changes

  • Yes, I agree. Not only registration of marriage but for that purpose anything that involves human rights have to be protected by proper documentation irrespective of religion. I will even recommend a “COMMON CIVIL LAW” for ALL INDIANS without any discrimination on the basis of religion/ creed.

  • haaa what will happen to us,,we got married 30 yeras back,,how will we get registered and how? i wonder…

  • You have rightly put it. Govt must make every effort to see that this directive is implemented wholeheartedly.
