iLand’s Twelve

April 10th, 2008

You sure must be wondering at this title and what it is supposed to mean.

Well, similar to the movie, Ocean's Twelve, a group of twelve iLanders decided to meet up. The only difference was that we were not going to pull off any heist. Instead we were going to have great fun meeting each other and knowing each other in a much better way apart from what we know through each other's blogs.

The eleven included:

Nischalson Crusoe
Deepa S
Ash K
Vicky Podiz
Divya
Myna
Wise Donkey
Warm Sunshine
Bad Angel
Sahiti Bharadwaj
Tamilini
And of course your's truly.

Due to some reasons Deepa, Myna, Bangel, and Sahiti could not make it to the meet.

So the rest of us met at the pre-decided venue ' the famous, Forum Mall in Bangalore ' the most happening place over there. Bangel, Sahiti and Tamilini are my newer friends on iLand. The rest of us (and a few others too) are a part of the old gang on iLand. All of us had had a ball in those initial days of iLanding in 2006. Some of them bangaloreans had met quite a long time back. I had met Deepa and Vicky on two different occasions
when I had been there.

When we all had gathered, I got a feeling as if we were meeting old college buddies after a really long time. The meeting felt like an alumni meet where we all catch up with each
other so very enthusiastically.

Vicky and Divya (the famous iLand couple) were the first ones to be there right on time. Since I was new to the place and since I dint know how much lead time I would require to reach it, I was a bit late. One by one everyone trickled to the venue. Ash came
in next and then we decided to have a comfortable place to sit and chat. So
Pizza Hut was the choice. And then Warm Sunshine came in with Hubby in tow.
Poor chap. First thing he told was that he was 'threatened' by wifey to keep
himself free that Saturday evening.

We called Nischal atleast half a dozen times and every time the reply was he would be reaching in 30 mins flat. Tamilini reached there with her cute dottir in tow. And we all
settled down and started catching up with each other. Nischal did reach
eventually after wot seemed like and eternity. Wise Donkey had promised me the
earlier week when I had called him that he would love to come too and that if
he did not have any additional work that weekend he would sure make it to the
meet. And yes, I was very happy that he did eventually come. Better late than
never. We guys did give hugs to each other. Its not that only women give hugs
to each other. But the only difference is that guys have hugs in only one size
' a short warm one. But as for women.. well let me not talk about that their
hugs are as complicated as them. Lols.

Ash was without her trademark 'topi'. And I was relieved that she did not play any pranks on us too (but then I was actually looking forward to see her do that.lols.). Other
iLanders who have met her before used to tell about her pranks et al. Warm
Sunshine and her hubby regaled us with their humour. And not to forget WD. For
those of you who think that wisdom and humour cant co-exist peacefully in one
single package ought to meet him once. I don't have to tell anything about
Nischal ' the official 'stripper' on iLand. Like a few other iLanders he has a
cult following here and people flock to his iLand in droves. And his humour is
awesome not just in his blogs but on his person too. I guess it is in his genes.

Divya was at her peppy best and more talkative of the two. Vicky is quiet by nature and allows his dressing do the talking. He is a designer and I guess I should be his worst
nightmare. Lolls. Like Vicky, Tamilini was also quiet. But it was great that
she too came to the meet and in the end we all had a great time.

Each of us taking back fond memories of that wonderful evening. And looking forward to meeting each other when we have another opportunity.

And oh yes.. I almost forgot to tell you guys that it was a perfect way for me to spend that day ' I completed two lovely and wonderful years on iLand and meeting lovely people and knowing them so well. I couldn't have asked God for a better way on that day.

A big Thank You to all you friends who made it there that day inspite of your busy schedules and hope to meet those who dint the next time around, if at all.

Meeting an iLander

September 19th, 2007

Her Name starts with D.

Her Daughter's name starts with N.

She is from Karnataka.

She is Smart.

Her daughter is even smarter.

She is a very close friend of mine on iLand.

If you thought I was talking about Deepa. The answer is both YES and NO.

YES, her name is Deepa.

NO, its not that Deepa, whose url is http://waves.rediffiland.com

She is Deepaa Shetty. url: http://deepaa.rediffiland.com

Ha, foxed you people with this one, dint I? That makes it one deepa too many on my iLand, i guess. (lemme run before both of them beat me black and blue….)

She is a doctor. But still I want her to be examined by a Cardiologist. I am sure that the cardio is going to be foxed too. He wont find involuntary cardiac muscles at all all he will find is Aurum ' yes.. Gold. She has a heart of gold. I guess, even the auricles and the ventricles will also be made of gold too. How else will you explain this statement that I read on her profile on Orkut :

She says, "I would like be an eminent doctor rather than a rich doctor, someone who can help human being." Unlike our national cricket team which doesn't have all rounders, she is an all rounder. I mean she practices Allopathy AND Homeopathy. To top that she is also a psychologist.

She hasn't blogged much. But still have got to know her well. And a small thanks should go to another 'once-upon-a-time-prolific-blogger' iLander friend of mine, Shweta. I am sure none of my currently active iLand friends know Shweta.

I met Deepaa when I was in Mumbai with my wifey. Felt great to meet her family. Know wot friends? I feel real lucky to have met and interacted and known such absolutely lovely people. Thanks to iLand, I have made some great friends here. I have been pestering her to write blogs more frequently. And hopefully she does that in the near future.

I have one more interesting thing to tell you people. I have nick named her, 'Barometer'. Heres why. She commented on a few of my posts initially. Then she would disappear. The again she would comment on one of my post only to disappear again. And she did not blog regularly too. I was left wondering and trying to decipher the pattern as to why she commented on some posts and did not comment on others. She must have been reading almost all of my blogs, but commented only on some. At last I could guess what it was. If my blog was good, I get a comment from her. If it was not up to the mark she won't
comment. That's why I nicknamed her 'barometer'. She was one of the first persons to tell me that she found some 'warmth' in my blogs and that I used to write from my heart. Darn !! Hope I am not sued for global warming. Lols. But honestly, thanks deeps. I was happy to hear that. Your point got vindicated recently when VTji also told me something similar. I thank both of you.

So this was yet another wonderful iLander that I met.
Neither the first, and hopefully not the last too but surely equal to the best.

Epilogue

August 29th, 2007

Sort of an epilogue

To be read after reading my previous post "For you a
thousand times over" under category Poems. (Posted on 17.08.2007)

This is sort of an epilogue to my previous post, "For you a
thousand times over". Okay, lest some of you object, this can't be called an
epilogue in the strictest of the term, but it concerns that post and a few
other things as well. That's why I have titled it as one.

I had that poem in my mind more than two months ago. But
never got around to posting it.. forget posting it ' never even bothered to put it down in words and offload it from my head. Anyways, it was for good only. One confession I want to make is that the concluding line was from the book, 'The Kite Runner' by Khaled Hosseini. I couldn't find a better way to end that poem. What I had in mind was different. But this one line gave perfect finishing touches and made up for all the flaws in my poem.

Flash back:
I was in Mumbai last month. Had planned to meet a few iLand
friends there. And there was this one friend (met others too) who had agreed to meet me. He is absolutely a great guy. He has a cult following on iLand. People find themselves blessed if they get comments from him or a gb. (okay.. I don't know about others, but I do feel great). He is a versatile blogger. And his blogs are AMAZING to say the least. I can go on and on about him, but wont, since you people know him better than me ' he is none other than AJ. Yes consider it my good luck or whatever; I managed to meet him during my visit to Mumbai.

An absolutely cool guy. Someone whose offline (and hence the
real) persona is exactly like his online one. Though we could not be together for a long, we had a great time. And I was the only the second iLander to have met him. Cool, ain't it? And yes, before I forget, he had this real long tuft of hair on his head which would put many a girl to shame for sporting cropped hair. I was one of those lucky blokes to have captured him with his twirls forever. ;) He used to draw glances from all the beautiful babes around there. I too decided to grow long hair like him ' so that I too get 'benefitted' and cover up for whatever god forgot in the looks department for me. But wifey dear objected; so that thought has been shelved. LoLs.

He gifted me a great book ' 'The Kite Runner' written by
Khaled Hosseini. It is a one of the best books I have read in recent times and have come to love it. And to have made that read all the more special, he had inscribed the magical words, 'you hide in this book, spot it'. And he said that I am like that character in the book. I just could not wait to start reading this book and find out whom he meant and how do I relate to that character. And you won't believe it guys, my poem also resonates a lot with what he told about the character and the story. Do I call it some kind of ESP or unknown power or what, I don't know. Thank You for that wonderful book Friend.

Thank you pal. You sure know how to make your friends special. I am elated to know and feel great to know you and am honoured to be
your friend.

The post on friendship quotes are also shamelessly copied
from that cute little book that he gave me. Maybe he got tired of my sms. So to tell me, look dude I already know whatever you have to say so here is this darned book now stop bothering me with them sms . Lols but poor chap . Still has to bear with me.

Meeting Meena Akka

August 9th, 2007

"You have to go to Chennai for the meeting", said the curt
voice at the other end. I didn't have to ask when, because I was the one who
had persuaded my friends to attend the meeting. But what put me in a fix was
that I had to leave in a couple of hours. Chennai is an overnight journey from
here and due to the last minute cancellation of one of my friends, I had to
attend the meet. A fast ride home to pick up my overnighter and then an even
faster ride to the station (with a couple of near miss accidents) saw me
sitting in the train (which I was sure that I would miss that day) ' with two
of my other friends and me totally out of breath. I had had my dinner before
going home.

There was this one friend whose age was 26, on whose behalf
I was attending and another who was 29. It was decided that I was to be the 29
year old bloke and the other friend who had come was to be the one who hadn't
come. He he he . I know you people are going to hit me for this one sentence
atleast. But rest assured, it is grammatically correct and logically too. I
assured them in lighter vein that a few of my iLand friends have guessed my age
to be 27 or 28 so don't you guys worry about the ticket examiner. Soon we were
discussing about the outcome of the meeting scheduled for tomorrow and soon
enough everyone wanted to catch up with some much needed sleep too.

It suddenly struck me that one of my two 'akka's is in
Chennai ' Meena akka (for the uninitiated akka means elder sister in Tamizh).
My meeting was going to be over by around 2 pm and we were free after that. So
I thought why not meet her after that? But then, Darn !! It was 11 pm. I can't
call her now. I knew that she would be definitely awake now. That was not a
problem. She would probably have parked herself on iLand at that minute and
maybe reading and posting gbs and letting our friends know as to what she had
for dinner. LoLs am going to get one from her for writing like this here. No
problems akka . You can beat the living daylights outta me. I wont mind. Ok.
Coming to the point, I decided to sms her. And expectedly pat came the reply,
'you are welcome rajesh, anytime.'. Darn !! A person just can't get any sweeter
than this. I was actually a loss of words to thank her for such a warm welcome.
I did tell her so in my reply. A couple of sms later, she had asked me to call
up the next morning after I landed in Chennai. Soon afterwards with little
effort, I slid into deep sleep.

Someone had come to pick us up at the station and we headed
for the place that was to be our accommodation as well as the venue for our
meeting. We were ready soon and we had about 30 minutes on hand before the
meeting started. So I called up akka. She was happy to hear that I had reached
Chennai. She doesn't know that I was more happier than her. And asked me to
call up after the meeting. Well as it usually happens, the meeting went on and
on and on and finally got over only at about 2.30pm. We all were famished and
headed straight for grub. After that great hearty meal down my system, I told
my co-brother (who was also there for the meeting representing Chennai) that I
have to meet a friend and shall be back soon to his home. If I had told him
that akka's home was almost about an hours ride away from the city centre, I am
sure he would have never let me go at all. And who would want to fight with a
'saali' (for the uninitiated, wife's sister)
- not me of all the persons. So called up athan (as giftson calls akka's
hubby) and told where I was. He asked me to stay where I was and that he would
come soon to pick me up and that we would head for his house.

He was there as promised and soon we were zooming in and out
of the light Sunday traffic. The day was cloudy since the morning and very very
light intermittent drizzles. But you do tend to sweat in Chennai. I have talked
to her hubby a couple of times before too. During one of those earlier talks, I
asked him as to whether he reads blogs or such other interests. "No man. I am
totally a technical person with interests in electronics and such other things.
What you people write and share is one of my least interests". Man !! I have to
admit it akka. You two make up an awesome couple. Hats off to both of you. On
the way home we talked about several other things ' nothing about blogs or
writing etc. Anyways I can talk about anything under the sun to anybody at any
point of time. So I did not have an inhibition or any problems in talking to
her hubby. We talked about lots of things and he showed all the famous land
marks that dotted the way to their home.

We reached their colony. A serene and a 'green' place full
of quiet and peace. I fell in love with that colony immediately. Her hubby
ushered me in. And there she was ' "Hi rajesh. Welcome" Darn !! Is this Meena
akka? Or is she pulling my legs? She doesn't least look like a mother of two
college going gurlz. Believe me friends ' not the least bit. She herself could
pass off for a college going girl if she was in a pair of jean.

So we exchanged pleasantries. I had hardly settled, that she
brought some pastries and hot veg puffs. I said sorry akka I cant have the cake
I shall have the puff but I will be more delighted if you just serve me a cup
of coffee. She says ok no problem you leave that cake and the puff. And soon
enough she disappeared. I was thinking like, what the hell? I have come all the
way to meet her and here she has disappeared. She comes back to explain that I
am preparing hot poori-sabzi, which you have to have thambi (thambi = younger
brother in tamil). Darn !! its not even an hour that I had had my lunch and
here she is talking about pooris. I chided her that I have come all the way to
meet you and here you are preparing food and I explained that I jus had my
meal. I would be more happy to chat with you. Well with a heart of gold which
she has, I jus could not refuse her more and ultimately had to yield and have
those simply great poori-sabji. Being jains, we don't prepare potato sabji at
home so I had that with much more delight, which I told her too. After
devouring the meal shamelessly, we sat down and talked about lots of things. I
cursed myself for having to look at the watch constantly. I had to rush home
too.

She showed the snaps of her recent delhi trip ' and she and her hubby shared
their experiences in detail. It was real fun to talk to them. The hour and half
seemed to pass through like a minute and a half. She said it was my bad luck
that her daughters had been to their school alumni function otherwise they too
would have met me. Yes I definitely missed meeting the entire family. She and
her hubby make up a great couple. I am amazed by them. And hope to learn a lot
from them. In fact I have learnt a lot from akka ever since I have started to
read her post and interact with her on chat and phone. One most important thing
I have learned from her is not only to hold on to one's beliefs and convictions
but not to be afraid to stand up for them and speak about them when dealing
with others.

Overall it was absolutely great meeting two wonderfully
lovable individuals and I am proud to know you people Akka. Her hubby dropped
me at the nearby railway station for me to head back to the city centre. And I
had one small problem in hand. To handle a fuming sister-in-law at home to
pacify. But then that's another story.

So this was how I met my junior akka. This was what I call a
meeting by chance.
There was this another meeting with other iLanders in Mumbai
which was in no way by chance. It was a planned meeting. I may or may not blog
about it. Depends on certain factors. Lets see. Lols.

The Unknown caller

May 22nd, 2007

301.

The number flashed on my mobile incessantly. Darn !! Now I had to think before I pick up that call. Had received a couple of mails, that if you get a call from these numbers, then please don't answer that call. It is a virus. As such my mobile doesn't have windows software nor symbian software etc. So the chances of a virus entering my mobile was very remote. And secondly the list contained only 10 digit mobile nos. Not a three digit one.

So was still wondering why only a three digit number? Has my phone's display gone kaput once again like it did last month? Hope not. And I had to decide fast whether I had to answer this call or not. Man, now I know how Tendy and Shewag and Dhoni have to face the fast balls hurled at them. They have to take decisions in split seconds. I still had the comfort of 10-15 seconds. And also did not have the fear of my face being smashed by leather, hard as rock at that.

Finally pressed on 'answer'. "Hello !! May I speak to Rajesh Vora?" Darn !! Who is this dumbo, I thought. Firstly, I get a call on my mobile. It is MY mobile and has been with me pretty much since I bought it. Who else but Rajesh Vora is gonna attend that call, I told myself. And I sound pretty much as close to me as possible. And i dont sound like any septuagenarian, do I? “Speaking”, I blurted. "Hi. How are you? I am ur iLander friend —-", spoke a sweet and cheerful voice. Darn I thought. That means the call is an ISD call.

Billions of blue blistering barnacles ' Captain Haddock would have exclaimed. I din't do that. But the effect in my head was pretty much the same. I was stunned and shocked. Which slowly turned to surprise and joy. An iLand friend calling from abroad? I never even imagined in my wildest dreams. But was very very happy to chat for sometime. We exchanged some news and views about ourselves and updated each other with what was happening at our ends. I had to pinch myself several times during the course of the conversation to confirm that I wasn't dreaming.

Thank you so much friend. I was overjoyed to hear from you and shall remember this for a long long time to come. It truly made my day special. As special as you are.

New Friends on my iLand

May 16th, 2007

Hi Friends,

I have been making iLanders as friends till now. But for the first time I managed to make a friend an iLander. And no, you won't see him on my list of friends. Coz, we are friends anyways. His url is http://kosmickshetra.rediffiland.com I know it is too late to welcome him to iLand, since he has been blogging for quite sometime now and has written some very great blogs and poems too. He is one of my best buddies in town and a person who I look up with awe and inspiration. He is that good a person.

Also, want to share with you a few of my new friends on iLand too. They are already famous and great and have a huge fan following, but I am connected to them on iLand only recently.

I formally welcome Jissy, CV, Angel A and Indigo to my iLand. Each one has become my friend in a unique way.

Jissy wrote on my GB:

Hey Rajesh,

How will I know when you put up a post? I tried to invite you to be my friend but got a message that ‘You cannot add this person as a friend.’ Why???????

I wrote back on Jissy's gb:

as for adding me as a friend…. there indeed seems to be some problem. kaink karvu padshe…. (translated from gujju, it means will have to do something about it)
tick the appropriate answer as to why i am not able to be added as a friend -

1) that is just a decorative button on my iLand. rediff guys don't want me to spread my tentacles any further.
2) the devil cursed me once that my friend list will not cross half century.
3) As it is 49 ppl are already suffering after being added as a friend on my iLand and god doesn't want another person to suffer more.
4) Don ko friend banana mushkil hee nahin, namumkin hai. (Don = Me)

And inspite of all the above if you still want to be friends, lemme give u the last warning….
Don ke saath dushmani to theek hai, dosti bhi bahut mehngi padti hai.
;-)
(seriously speaking, u said in ur gb entry, how will u get to know if i post a blog?…. apart from a couple of my blogs, i didnt see ur comments on any other blogs. r u really interested?)

Jissy replies back on my gb:

"Hey Don, ;-)
I'll analyse the reasons that you have given one by one.
1) Add a friend's a decorative piece? Hey, how can Rediff give you this special privilege? I'm going to complain to Human Rights Commission. ;-)
2) Devil cursed you that your friends list won't cross 50. You say you have 49 friends only. The next one will make it 50. You won't cross 50. So, don't worry.
3) God doesn't want me to suffer? Since when have you become God, my friend??? (I treat you as a friend already. Do you mind?)
4) Hum toh naamumkin ko mumkin banaane mein yakeen rakhte hain. ;-)
5) Dost banaakar toh dekhiye. Mehengi padi bhi toh bhi hum bardaasht kar lenge. ;-)
I keep on commenting on my friends' blogs. When I visit an iland I make it a point to comment but since I have many friends it's difficult for me to post comment on all the blogs. Tamne evu laage chhe ke hoon serious nathee? Jo evu hot toh mein tamne invite mokli j naa hot. Comment post kartaa vaar laage chhe. Bus etli j taklif che

(translated from gujju again it means ' do you think I aint serious? If that was the case, I would not have tried sending you an invite. Commenting takes time, that is the only problem.)

On receiving this GB, I sent her an invite promptly. Jissy, I am honored and touched. The great teacher that you are, thanks for teaching me a thing or two about perseverance and persistence. I will remember this one for quite a long time to come.

—————————————-

Angel A writes on my guest book:

Rajesh, seen your comment on BB’s blog.. I fully agree with you about ppl using cutting and pasting technique to feed their blogs.. However, i stil feel, if you take time to read others’ well written blogs and comment on it, those ppl will definately get back to you and once they find quality they will return again.. Thats how I have learnt .. BTW, I will read your blogs in days to come.. Regards, Angel :)

I wrote on Angel A's guest book:

thanks for that gb entry. actually what i meant to say was that fwds generate more comments here on iLand. and i have seen umpteen no. of blogs - great write ups with very few feedback. that was what prompted me to say that mediocrity rules. more so when i find it that even front page landings were just email fwds. that was the last straw.
i was thinking of posting a blog on this issue, i think it is high time i post it.
regards
rajesh
;-)

Angel A writes on my guest book:

I got it in the beginning what you meant Rajesh and i agreed it in toto! That's the reason I responded to it. In addition to that what I have seen is, some people even copy and paste from a news paper article, make some changes and put it on their blog as their own. And they get loads of comments for it.. Yes pls write something about it. :)

Angel A writes on my guest book:

Hey, your blog says I can not add this person as friends :(

I write on Angel A's guest book:

ha ha ha… my blog goes off the lid sometimes… i have asked it to be watchful of who is coming in etc. but then sometimes it behaves strangely no….?
jus kiddin yaar… the add a friend option was disabled on my iLand… but then a surprise might be waiting for you already…

(I had checked out her blogs and sent her an invite .. )

————————————

Now over to Indigo :

Indigo Iris writes:

my pleasure rajesh….ur blog was the first that i read after landing here on the iland….& was hugely impressed….& hv ever since followed ur writings…. :)

(I am thinking aloud '

DARN !!

Duh !! Talk of silent admirers. She will fit the bill perfectly. She has been reading my blogs ever since she landed on iLand. Has never commented even once on my blogs. But then, guess I should add her as a friend just for this ONE gb entry which has made my day.)

Indigo Iris writes on my gb after I send her an invite :

it’s an honour to be ur friend…& i most humbly accept…. :)

———————————-

CV went on a rampage reading some of my blogs. I too read some of her blogs and found them very good. As such there are many many good writers on iLand. But honestly, I cant relate to most of the very good ones. I mean I just cant make the head or tail outta them. But CV writes in a very simple, lucid and touching style. I found her blogs reflected her caring nature and she comes across as a great person. I was just thinking of sending her an invite, when I got one from her. Guess, this is what they call telepathy.

CV writes:

Hi, dropped by to tell you I enjoyed reading some of your posts. My Best Regards CV

CV writes:

Thanks for your wishes Rajesh. I haven’t done anything wrong sending you an invite, have I? I hope not:) Thanks for accepting.

CV writes :

Hi, it beats me how these messages manage to become lengthy ones like those below.:) I’ve noticed you love using the word ‘darn’. I read your lovely poem and yes we had a shower yesterday and on and off but the best was few weeks back, showers on consecutive days. Your poem reminded me of my own called ‘The Dance’ and it amazes me how the same scenario can be worded with different tunes to it. Well, so abundant and beautiful is nature and that should give me the answer. Read if you’re interested.:-)

And CV went on to read lots of my other blogs too. Thank you so much CV.

——————————–

Now some iLanders again who are not friends but are friends. Confusing, aint it? So is life, dude.

This self proclaimed, disciplined and innocent iLander plundered my iLand sometime back and carpet bombed my blogs with his comments. Yes you guessed it right ' Gifty. It was raining comments left right and centre. I could not do the same to his iLand, cos I have received many of the emails as forwards from my other friends and thus they were not that new to me as they are to most of the iLanders. So I decided pay him back with what I do best ' spam his mobile with my sms'. Boy was he exhausted with them. But happy nevertheless. Even though he might not show up on my list of friends, we are. And I missed meeting him by just minutes. He said he was on his way to Chennai from where he was going to board his flight to Nigeria. But his train had left Madurai just minutes before I could reach it. Otherwise, I would have had the honour of meeting the most sought after and famous iLander.

Gifty writes:

Hi Rajesh-ji…

wat is dis…..!! ur posts are a reader’s delight…& my visits n comments on it was of course my expression of pleasure….& not necessarily mean that u or for that matter any other ilander had to reciprocate and i don think visiting each others iland and commenting is an unwritten obligation / liability….!!!

Ur “Top of the Charts” is an ideal post…if everyone cud post a similar one..that too wid a tag like..must read…or this the first one on this concept….then it wud encourage the readers to a large extent..

Its nice to be with a leader & dats U…………..;-))cheers….;-))

~`GIFT`~

——————————-

And yet another friend who is not visible on my friends list is Meena akka. (okie.. this is not a.k.a ' but akka means elder sister in Tamil)

I guess she knows how to fly a F16. Cos she cluster bombed my iLand a couple of times and left a trail of comments. Thank you so much Meena akka. I will have my sweet revenge too. I have plundered your iLand once. And I will do it again too. You write awe fully beautiful.

Wishing a fellow iLander

Hi Friends,

My good friend, Dr. Namrata (http://drnamrata.rediffiland.com ) had posted a blog today asking all her friends to post a get-well gb message for her iLander friend, Shabdika Sharma (http://shabdika.rediffiland.com).

Shabdika Sharma has just undergone multiple surgeries in PGI, Chandigarh. I posted a gb entry on Shabdika's blog. But the good Dr. asked me to spread the word around too. At first, I was a bit hesitant ' that I dint know who Shabdika was. She was not on my friends list and I had never visited her blog. But heck. I din't know you initially nor you knew me too. Still we are all like a part of a big family on iLand.

So I request all my good friends to please pray for her and wish her for her speedy recovery. I thank all my wonderful friends here for the good wishes to her. Please do not forget to visit her iLand and post a message on her guest book.

An exercise in Narcissism

April 5th, 2007

These are the collection of some of the best guest book entries on my iLand.

There are two reasons for collecting them and putting them up here:

  1. Next time i feel a bit low and feel like perking me up, all i have to do is go thro this post. There is a lot of motivation give by you people. It really keeps me going.

  2. Shifting thro 600+ odd guest book entries is no joke ' when all you can load is 10 entries at a time. So have to spend about 60 page re-loads to view them. So next time to read the best comments, I don't have to go thro it all over again.

Over and above that, its good to indulge in narcissism once in a while or to blow your own trumpet. So i acknowledge that here that this is an exercise in blowing my own trumpet.

I know, most people just fast scan or at the most, read the beginning and the ending of the post that are this long and post a comment. I dont mind if you dont read this post at all. This post is purely for my own indulgence.

The entries are put up in descending chronological order. No favoritism to any friend here. Do proceed if you like to read. If u have the time, read this one for two reasons:

  1. You may find your name featured here. And will be happy to note that i liked your entry very much. So i hereby acknowledge your comments and sincerely thank you for it.

  2. If you don’t find your name here, then you can do some serious introspection, as to why it doesn’t come here. LoLs.

Nice iLand you have here. Yes, I have been trespassing on your property...Lots of interesting posts on a variety of Subjects. I could not go through many but the post on “Harper Lee” brought back one of my favourite quotes to the fore. ” Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” Thank you very much for sharing and I promise to drop in once again to pick up some more nuggets from your shores. Bye and take care

Rajesh, you have been really supportive of my writing. Did it remind you of those chori se jhaakna photo ko baar baar days?

Hi, agree completely with you that this one lacks depth; purely because it was actually a question someone asked that I was trying to answer. Your critiques are greatly appreciated and it helps me improve. Would never take offence to your comments, or anyone’s for that matter. Hope you are doing good!

Meeting the First iLander - Deepa

April 2nd, 2007

Okay Friends, as promised to you, I am putting up this post of my meeting the first iLander. We met sometime in September 2006.

This blog is an extract of the thread that was put up in orkut and I have edited some portions of it, because of two reasons. It was too too long.. and there were lots of other topics intertwining in between.

You must be knowing most of the ilanders urls. In case you don't know, please ask me. I shall let you know.

Happy reading.

rendezvous in Bangalore

Amit : guys someone has just gone and fixed up a rendezvous in Bangalore….I believe a triumvirate was to be formed but as of now only jack and jill turned up…..yes it did happen….over to them to speak out now :)

clue - one has a cute kid and other has been married for a decade….WD gets no vote coz he refused to come :D

Vidhya

Ok..guys. Deepa and Vora jee.. how did the rendezvous go?? Did you guys identify each other…bolo

Vidhya

If anyone is in chennai/visiting chennai do ping me and we can see if we can meet guys…

Deepa

for the record
WD didn’t refuse. He didn’t know! Ahh, and abt trying to find where each other (Vora and I) were, I can write a blog about it!!

amit

WD gets his vote back :)
thanks to deepaji acting as a knight in shining armour:)

amit

abt deepa’s comment
it cant be a blog….coz its abt the community….u hv to write it as a topic here…

Deepa

ok ok
stop being pushy now! :-P Ok…so here we go. Where do I start?

Deepa

The day before the meeting
Well, Our guy Vora was trying to get Ash to agree to meet him and the dame wasn’t being responsive, thanks to her schedule at office! I tried to get to her using Orkut and gmail, but to no avail. So I just went ahead and called up Vora. Didn’t want to miss this opportunity of meeting a fellow iLander. The first “online” friend whom I had never talked to before and was going to meet! I was still apprehensive, coz I have never done this before! Never even exchanged phone numbers with anyone I wasn’t sure of! But my call to him and the way he spoke convinced me that all my fears were unfounded!

Deepa

The call
Well, I called him, and was greeted with the caller tune “golmaal, golmaal”. And he refused to pick up the phone! I wasn’t sure what to make of it and finally gave up. Plugged on my hands free and started driving home after a busy day at office. 1/2 an hour later the cell phone rang and the display showed “Rajesh Vora”. Ahh…there he was. “Hi!”, I said. He was as casual as they come when he said, “Hey, how are you!?”. We chatted for about 30 mins!! I was thankful coz I was in the middle of one of the biggest traffic snarls on Hosur road :-) I don’t think he was that thankful, coz it was an STD call and he was using his cellphone :D Well, at the end of the call, it was decided that I would meet him the next day and decide the venue and time after speaking to Ash

Deepa

The call…contd
Forgot to mention, that it was like chatting with an old friend on phone. It never felt as if i was speaking to him for the first time! He was thoroughly disappointed with the fact that the iLanders in Bangalore hadn’t even so much as exchanged e-mail IDs and phone numbers, leave alone having met each other!! He knew more abt the iLanders in Bangalore than I did :D
Finally HE had to give ME Ash’s number to call her up and fix up the “rendevous”

Deepa

Call to Ash
I called up Ash after I received her number from Rajesh and I guess she was at office! She took a moment to recognise “Deepa from iLand” and the pleasant surprise showed in her voice! (She’s got a sweet voice btw! Vishal, listening?) She uses “Theek hai”, like a full stop! Told her abt the plans of meeting Rajesh and she confessed, “even though I have lived in B’lore for 3 years, all I know is Indiranagar and MG Road“. Excellent. I’ve lived in Bangalore for 30 years and I DON’T KNOW Indiranagar. MG Road, well, people would kick me if I said I didn’t know that, but kick me…I still donno how to get there from home. So I asked her if she knew the Forum mall and she fortunately said she did! Phew! So we fixed up the meeting to be there

Deepa

Frantic mail to WD
It suddenly stuck me that WD was in Bangalore as well, but the idiot that I was, had never bothered to get his phone number till now (I still haven’t!). I had no idea how to contact him so I smsed Ash asking her if she had it. And while I waited for her sms (for which, I was told by Rajesh, I would have to wait forever), I mailed WD. My gmail account refused to open and so I used rediff. I later realized it would have been better to go searching for him on Bangalore roads yelling Sudeep all the way. That would have been faster. My mail is yet to reach him.

Deepa

Rajesh thrilled
Called up Rajesh to tell him that Ash would be making it after all. He was thrilled and agreed to come to wherever it was we wanted him to come. We decided to meet near the Forum mall. And I went to bed with a smile that I would finally get to see the faces behind the “google” and “Calvin and Hobbes” :-)

Deepa

12 in the night…
My pillow suddenly started vibrating. I woke up with a start! It took me a couple of seconds to realize it was my cell phone under the pillow. It was Ash. She’d called to tell me that she didn’t have WD’s number. I wanted to ask her what she was doing at such an unearthly hour but was too sleepy to do so! I also wanted to tell Rajesh that Ash does reply to SMSes with a phone call. Except that she does it in the middle of the night, but I dozed off before I could type an sms to him

Deepa

4 am in the morning
It was the pillow again. The vibration was not the long, persistent one this time. But short ones at regular intervals which suggested that it was an sms. I had to really, literally force my eyelids open with my fingers in order to figure out who had messaged in the middle of the night. I strained my eyes to see the time and then the message. It was Ash again. I realized, this girl probably never slept! Her message said in short, quick words that her granny was ill and that she couldn't make it to the rendezvous after all. Even at my sleepiest best, I was disappointed :-(

amit

hmmmm
so that what made it a rendezvous of two….so it was a date after all :)…..waiting for details on the same….. p.s. ash how is yr granny now?

Deepa

The date
Will post details after my current lunch date with Nishu. She doesn’t stand being stood up for a date :-)

Deepa

A message for Vidhya
From Vora - “tell that stupid girl to give her contact number” :D.

amit

how long does it take for lunch??
I am waiting for more details with masala toppings….am glued to my notebook here….come on, quick quick…

Deepa

Lunch
Try feeding lunch to Nishu and you’ll know! :-P As for the masala toppings, yeah it will need all the masala it can take in order to make it sound as exciting as you are expecting!

Deepa

nother message to Vidhya
Rajesh just called you a devil. don’t ask me why. you deal with him yourself.

 amit

hmmm i guess as much
anyways u here…so better complete the rendezvous thing….will get review comments from rajesh when he logs onto orkut next:)

Deepa

arrey tum to mere peeche pad gayo ho! Nishu will finish dressing up any minute and start off on her tirade now! i promise to finish this by tonite :-)

amit

sorry….i forgot the time zone aspect for a minute…its already time for u to go….sorry abt that again….p.s. will logon again tonight (yr tonight)

Deepa

The rendezvous
okie, me back. where was I? Ahh, I was busy being sleepily disappointed that Ash was not coming. Woke up in the morning and let Rajesh know that she wasn’t coming and his disappointment was palpable too, from his message. Considering Ash wasn’t gonna be there, I didn’t want Rajesh to come all the way till Koramangala from the B’lore Railway station where he was arriving. So I went to the station myself to meet him. He told me he was near some restaurant, the name of which I had never heard. He then said he was near an overbridge and near a pedestrian subway. I went to all those places but couldn’t find the man I was looking for - the one who was supposed to be wearing a pink shirt(whats with men and pink these days??) and was supposed to be sporting a french beard. It so happened that we were looking for each other on either sides of the overbridge and the subway! It took us 20 mins and 20 phone calls to figure out where we were! (He finally got rather fed up at my pathetic sense of directions and agreed to come back all the way from wherever he was to the enrance of the railway station)

Deepa

The man, the beard…Rajesh Vora!
So I was waiting for him at the entrance of the station and the phone rang again, for the 21st time! “you are carrying a white handbag?”. “Yes”, I spun around to see where he was seeing me from, but couldn’t see him. He said he had spotted me and 2 mins later joined me! Whew! finally! Slim, fair with a perfectly trimmed french beard and a trendy pair of sunglasses, medium height, a smart pink shirt(it wasn’t the girlie pink like i thot it would be :D ), semi formal trousers and a wide grin, which put me at ease instantly just the way his chatter had on phone :-) That’s Rajesh Vora, for you.

Deepa

the chatter (box)
We found a quiet hotel(yeah there was one, even in a place as busy as majestic) and he had his breakfast for probably the third time since morning(going by what he said that he had stuffed himself continually) and I chose lassi. People, I have one important announcement to make before I proceed further - Mr. Rajesh Vora is the oldest amongst us. Yep, he is XX. And, he looks no more than 27! He’s been married for a decade!! And he is absolutely, completely, totally (can;t think of any other adverbs) in love with Kalpana. His wife :-) It showed in his eyes when he spoke of her, so indulgently. Rajesh, if I am spoiling any romantic liasons you were planning with people in orkut or iLand…sorry yaar! couldn’t resist! Anyways, I finished my lassi while he was still into his second spoonful of khara bath. He couldn’t probably have been faster coz he never stopped talking. He apologized about 5 times for doing most of the talking and then resumed talking again :-) We spoke abt the iLand, his schooling & college, my schooling etc. He planned about 10 blogs while he was talking…so you can await them. won’t reveal any more details abt the nature of the blogs, lest i get blasted by the author :-) He got a few calls and an umpteen smses while we were at the hotel, the busy businessman that he is :-) but that didn't deter him from being the chatter box! But it was a lively chatter and I enjoyed every moment of it. And you know, the smile never left his face :-)

Finally it was time for me to go coz I had to get to work and he had a meeting to attend. I am sure he must have thanked his stars when I said I would have to leave for office in some mins considering I was being such a dull creature listening to all that he was saying and never saying anything much! He must have found me quite a contrast to what i am on iLand where I yap away to glory with my comments! We called up Raghu (Iyer) too, on the way back and he was more than pleased to receive our calls, though he was busy. We tried Ash too, but she was seemingly busy at work again. He took out two huge bars of chocolate - one for me and one for Nishu before he bade me goodbye! Wasn't that sweet? As sweet as the person himself :-)

Deepa

So that was that!
He called up later in the evening before he left and got a chance to speak to Nishu as well! He managed a solid 10 secs with her :-) I am hoping he left Bangalore with some pleasant memories! ( but certainly poorer by a few hundred rupees coz of the umpteen calls he’d had to make to trace me) I smsed him sayng i was writing abt the meeting and his reaction was, “Whats there to write yaar, it was pretty dumb I think! I can sense someone getting angry!” Ahh…so that’s what he thinks of the meeting!! Dumb! When he spoke nineteen to the dozen!! The cheek of him. I told him I could write a page just abt his beard :-) So Rajesh, what say? Pretty dumb eh?

Vidhya

Just back from shaadi shopping…anyways whats devil and stupid girl all about?

Devil- Thats the first time am hearing it…Am going to visualise myself as a devil

Stupid..well i’ve heard that sooooo many times…..my cousin( who is a real pain..) calls me vidhu budhu(nonsense rhyming rules)

Will SMS my no to you guys…and deepa.. Ash does have a sweet voice..I second that(vishal..jawab do…)

amit

thanks
thanks for answering my request with all the details…now the stage is set for rajesh to come over n comment on it…his version of how much he hated being with u…or on the flipside that how much a competition now Kalpana has coz of some smart ass with a smarter kid in bangalore :))

Deepa

shaadi?
shaadi shopping? who is getting married?? and Amitji, Kalpana can rest easy.

amit

deepa save yr bum
vidhya is now gonna kick u hard for this one…who’s getting married? of course she is getting married….

Deepa

ouch!

Go and read the entire narration, DONKEY and not bits and pieces of it! We didn’t meet in Koramangala. So we saved you a trip and a fall. We had planned to originally, but then since Ash dropped out, we changed plans and met in Majestic instead. As for the mail that never reached you, is that Sandeep Ozarde on Orkut?

Deepa

Where the hell are the gals?
I am being attacked by 2 guys…one of whom is grring and the other one who is more like a cheerleader (in all probabilities with a prop like the one they use in football teams - the colorful hairy little things which they hold and jump up and down like idiots, not to mention the short skirts…are you wearing those as well, Nischal?). Help!

Wise Donkey

Gals are ..er…missing!!
Run Deepa run.. i’ve totally lost it and am going hammer and tongs at u!! Nis hold that skirt and run behind her!!

Deepa

Go to both of them and ask all the questions you want to. okie? Phew, that shoudl keep them busy for an hour at the least! Nischal, WD, when you are finished ans her Qs, do drop her home. Byeeee!

Wise Donkey

Watery Tensions
Nishu, sweety, do u know that when u put an ant in a mug of water filled to the brim it cant swim out? It’s called surface tension. Now..mamma knows a lot abt surface and other tensions as well.. She’ll explain it to u go ask her…BTW… pls get me a mug full of water before u go to mommy :) (Devilish grin :D)

 rajesh

comment no. 1
Wid deepa around who needs the paparazzi?

 rajesh

our guy vora
Deepas comment "our guy vora" makes me public property I guess. :(

 rajesh

deepa’s observations
Any prizes for observations? My vote goes to deeps. Right from the ring tone and lots more to follow ..

 rajesh

idiots of bangalore
Deepa, u forgot to mention I called u all idiots?

 rajesh

photo on orkut for a day
I had posted my own photo a day before the google one appeared good u dint see it, any of you . Ha ha ha

 rajesh

Ash's message in the night
Deepa, U use a vibrating pillow how the hell do you sleep peacefully? That explains ur er, rocking posts.

rajesh

i am mad, Amit
Amit ' date? Now I am really angry . Deeps lets get it straight was I even a wee bit flirty or made u feel like I was on a date or something? Man abhi to main bahut gusse mein hoon .. Darn !!

rajesh

my sms to deeps asking for vids mobile no.
And deeps no thanks for conveying my msg to vids on "as is where is" basis.

rajesh

making a mountain out of a molehill
And Amit no thanks to you too for making this more intriguing than it actually is/was.

rajesh

observations post by deepa
And over to deeps : slim ' yes. Fair ' no. perfectly trimmed French beard ' yes. Trendy sunglasses ' no. medium height ' sort of (depends on how u look at it). Pink and its shades ' now I am actually red. (note ' I am red.. not the shirt). Wide grin ' cant beat ur avatar. That was the public property rajesh for you. Man am I dizzy. I already feel like a frog on the dissecting table being explained to medical students.

rajesh

senior citizen
Now that u have mentioned my age too I feel like a senior citizen out here on iLand. Duh? And thanks for the additional line that I don't look like one. Actually I maybe (no, not maybe, am) only 20 at heart, for all that u know.

rajesh

i am doubly mad, deeps
You cud have left my wifey out of this. I am quite mad at you now, for just having that thought that I was trying to go on some romantic liaisons at iLand or even orkut. I have half the mind to just run away from here and from iLand too, for you to have mentioned it.

rajesh

my grin
You are right about the smile ' it's the only permanent feature on my face ' well mostly. and laughter and humour are my constant companions. my shadow may desert me, but not ‘em.

rajesh

answer to deeps question of being dumb
And stupid deeps ' neither were u dumb nor I nor the meeting. I felt it dumb to write all about this.  blog or non-blog.

rajesh

vids - vivid imagination
And vids looks like ur imagination has run riot . All that's red is not devil or vice versa.

rajesh

Amit - come prepared when we do meet.
And Amit over to you now ' the first thing I am gonna do when we do meet is not give you a hand shake, but a karate chop (I aint kiddin' deepa wilya vouch for me?) for that competition comment from you. I aint competing wid anybody nor aint anybody else over anybody else. Now toh I am really really wild.

rajesh

deeps - et tu?
And deeps ur comment to that was not the least bit consoling.

rajesh

WD
WD,  going by the comments (or is it scraps over here?).. I would have gladly avoided to meet any dame .. i really swear… and let you do the honours. deeps nothing personal against you or anybody… but i did not like the direction of the blog one little bit.

amit

apologies to rajesh…the idea was just some harmless teasing…but if u r offended i take it back….no offense meant….and yea u can give me all karate chops u like coz i started this topic here :(

rajesh

no apologies.
arrey guys, i just wanted to get the record straight that i am not here for any romance or anything like it… i think i over-reacted to it. i cud have just put it in a line.. instead of hammering it out here. yes u can pull my legs, tease me, spank me, slap me(exclusive rights given out to deeps), haul me out of my slumber(now that wud make me mad), leave me right in the middle of the ocean to drown,,,, i will still not be mad at you guys.. now that i have got my viewpoint nailed into u guys. OK? so amit apologies returned with thanks and deeps u too can pull my leg any end(the prob. wud be i wont budge an inch). guys, is that loud and clear? shall come back here after 6 hours. hope i get replies from Amit and Deeps and others too.

Deepa

alright guys! now lets stop offering apologies and returning them! don’t mean to get all senti here, but it sure is a lesson learnt for a big mouth like me . Hey Rajesh, that doesn’t mean I will stop pulling your legs and make you pull your hair out as well :P.
For the next meeting in Bangalore, I will let the others write about ME for a change ;-) Ash, WD, WS, listening?

rajesh

no comments
rightly said deeps,,,, and before others do that… (b t w are u guys meeting tomorrow?), i shall try to beat them to it(i meant me writing about deeps bfore others)… lemme see me doing it this evening… and one thing guys(and u included deeps) dont expect any great stuff coming out from me… u know my limitations na… am not so great a writer as u guys… and much less a keen observer as deepa… duh.

rajesh

bouquets after the brickbats.
ok.. guys, let me have my say too about the er, meeting. well, i caught the train to blore the previous night at the nick of the time.. so couldn't take deeps call. good i had ring back tone.. so she must have had a nice time.. listening to songs… and then i called back…

well, deeps i still dont know wot prompted you to give ur phone nos. to strangers. well, i found a very young voice at the other end. a very cheerful and lively voice.(should i use any other adjs. deeps?) we chatted for some time. i was feeling great to talk to a fellow iLander.(i have been talking to raghu and laks.) actually talking to deeps was like an achievement for me. the most popular iLander. i call her the queen bee of my iLand. her posts have been awesome. i pinched myself. am i really talking to http://waves.rediffiland.com ? we had to call up back and forth to fix up the meet. i had emailed earlier that my business meeting was scheduled between 1pm to 5 pm. so any other time was favourable with me.

hide & seek
got a message from deeps that ash wont be joining.. was let down a bit… but if she intended to tell that she too wouldnt be coming.. i would have strangled both of them together, next time we met. another sms asking me to have breakfast..coz a puja at home had taken longer than necessary… i felt as if my mom was fussing over me.. (sorry abt that one deeps). but i did as told. had a great breakfast(i love blore food btw) at Kamats, just opp the station. then deeps said she would reach in half hour. after reachin’ near here, she asked where am i. i told her. she asked me to stand just beside the subway. i did as told again. one small difference though. she was searching at one end of the subway and i was at the other end. so that explains the upmteen phone calls.. no wonder the mobile cos. earn so much.

rajesh

meeting
well deeps had said that i called and the purse thing etc. etc. if i hadnt told her that i had worn a pink shirt, i had half the mind to walk past her and see wot she is upto etc. ha ha ha… wud have been fun. but no.. i cudnt. there she was… deeps i wouldnt be so great an observer as you.. but lemme try.. she wore a green salwar had a snow white purse on her… well beyond that i dont know much.. short in stature… was it a pony tail or open hair.. sorry dunno.. but i was looking for a particular product called grey cells on her head.. they didnt show up…

Monu

gr8 goin yaar
gone thru all that sweet & sour happening here.. cudn’t help but smile, grin, laugh & startle at that.. Rajesh: seems like u r havin a tough time at orkut but I’m confident u’ll get thru it.. any prob mail me yaar, i’ll tell you how to fix it.. for deeps, i guess the beauty lies in brains not in appearance.. gud that u guys r meeting again.. cud somebody tell me how far is BNG frm HYD & how can one reach there.. I’m presently in HYD & wd luv to meet u guys if possible.. keep goin..

 rajesh

findin a place to chat
deeps confessed that she was not familiar with that area, but suggested in weak terms that there was a place called sukh sagar which i told that there is one and we could go there. i wud suggest her to download google earth map on her mobile.. since she is very weak in directions etc. we managed to find the place called sukh sagar… there was a name board on the front but we were dismayed to find a shopping complex behind it.. no hotel …. on enquiring wid the securtiy guard there.. he directed us to go right thro the mall and take the back entrance and the hotel was right behind it… we went as told… on coming out of the back entrance… there was this alley kinda thing.. and both of us looked quizically at each other.. where did that chap lead us to.. but then there was the res. on the opp. to which the guard was referring to… on entering it.. we were relieved to have found a nice little place to have a quiet chat.. the rest has been told by deeps .
