The Girl Child

March 1st, 2007

Our iLand friend, Amit Agarwal, has decided to bring to focus the plight of the girl child in India. As a part of that, some of his friends, including me, are also putting up their blogs. To know more, please visit http://amit.rediffiland.com. Amit, thanks for instigating me into writing for a worthwhile cause. I shall continue on this and other awareness issues as a part of my blogging henceforth.

Usilampatti. A small sleepy town about 50 kms from Madurai. This non-descript town is famous, or rather infamous for one thing -  highest female infanticide in Tamil Nadu (if not in India). Forget about women going for an abortion after they come to know about the sex of the child they are bearing ' it is much worse. They kill the child as soon as it is born. There are different ways that they do it. I was appalled and shocked when I heard this for the first time.

Isnt this an irony ' that the Girl child is killed in the very same land that she is worshipped in the form of Devi? And another thing that shocks me is that the child's mother and grandmother are also involved and supportive of this dastardly act. I just cant understand that. They say that mother's love is the most unconditional, true and supreme in this world. Then where did that disappear, when the girl needed it the most?

Basically, our social fabric is responsible for the plight of the girl. Dowry being the no. 1 culprit for it. I personally see no other reason for bias against girl child. No amount of legislation or enforcement will help the girl child. For that matter even government efforts are not going to yield much better results to protect her. We need a large-scale social movement. Don't expect results overnight. It might take years or even decades for change to be visible. For tangible results to be seen. But let us not be bogged down by failure or slow progress.

I am doing my wee little bit to bring this issue to focus. I don't want appreciative comments on this blog, nor do I expect a pat on my back. Please refrain from that. I might never be in the government, or in the IAS or in some authoritative post to contribute more. But then I have this small little platform provided by rediff, where I can voice my thoughts. So let me also contribute to this noble cause started by Amit.

God bless all those poor souls who have lost their lives ' even before they could utter "Ma".

p.s.: I shall be posting more on this issue soon.
