Pause & Think

December 23rd, 2008

A few of my friends justified as to why it's alright for people to eat animals. I however think otherwise and have strong reservations about man killing animals and eating them.

I give my take on the point of why we humans should NOT eat animal food. I present this in the form of answers to widely held beliefs.

Man has being eating meat since the Stone Age or since known history, so we can eat meat too.

Well, just because the Stone Age man had been consuming meat, doesn't mean that we too should do so. The Stone Age man had limited means and resources. He dint know farming etc. Mankind has grown by leaps and bounds since then. We have so much food from plant origin. We need not kill animals anymore to eat.

Man is the Supreme Being and king of the animal world or rather the planet. So we can do as we please.

Yes, agreed man is the Supreme Being. That is precisely why we should be benevolent on other lesser life forms. We don't like tyrants as kings, do we? Similarly if we like to be called as a good people, we should rule earth responsibly and righteously.

Animals have been provided by god to us to have them as food.

Nothing can be farther from the truth than this. If we call this world gods creation, then surely both man and animals also are god's creation only. God wouldn't like it if we kill his creation. Would you like it that your kids kill each other? Of course not. Similarly god too would not like it either.

Animals kill other animals for food. Why cant we?

The structure and anatomy of carnivorous animals makes it a must for them to prey on other animals for their survival. They are condemned to live that way. Neither do they have the power to think as we humans have. Where as we can survive and lead a very healthy life by consuming only plant origin food.

Cereals and plants won't be sufficient to feed the whole population of the world.

Wrong again. The population of the world before 2000 years was hardly 2 Lacs. Even at that time people used to think that we won't have enough grains to eat. People used to hoard grains in granaries. The fear of insufficient food has been a constant in people's minds over these centuries. But look at the growth of all the major cereals produced all over the world. It is phenomenal. Even today people dying of hunger is not because there is less food to eat but because it is unevenly distributed.

Animals don't feel pain.

Animals feel pain as much as we do. Its only that they are not able to speak our language and tell us that please don't hurt us, please don't kill us and eat us. A deaf and dumb person can't talk. Does that mean he doesn't feel pain? Does that mean we can kill him? Of course not.

Plants too have life. We may as well kill either plants or animals. What difference does it make?

Well, all we need it to satisfy our hunger. Plants take sufficient care on that front. Plants are at the lower order of the hierarchy. Animals are higher and highest is Man. Imagine you are to climb the staircase of a 5 storey building. You wouldn't be hurt so much if kicked down from the 1st floor as you would if kicked down from the 5th floor. Killing an animal is like kicking someone who had climbed till the 4th storey. Life forms are given chance to come up in the hierarchy. So, eating plant origin is a much much lesser crime than killing and eating animals.

Animals are richer in energy, proteins, vitamins etc etc.

Totally false. In the natural food chain, every time energy is transferred from one point to another, it loses 90% in transition. For e.g. Plants absorb energy from the sun in the form of photosynthesis. They absorb only 10 joules out of 100. Now when we consume the plants/cereals we are able to absorb 10% of that. But if animals are in the food chain, then we get only 1%. And in addition, we acquire a host of diseases that reside in animals. Moreover our bodies can digest plant origin food more efficiently and faster than animal origin food.

Eggs are vegetarian and Milk is non-veg.

I have never heard a more quirkier myth in my life. Eggs are to hens what a foetus is to humans. Given a chance and time, it too can hatch. But alas, we kill it. Abortion what we call it in our language. Milk is not taken by killing a cow. Even after giving milk, a cow is alive and so is the calf. But yes, we have to remember and ensure that the calf is given sufficient milk first and then we can take the excess for our consumption.

Thus I feel that there is no need for us to kill and eat any kind of animal.

Not to forget .

A quote

We are all connected in this world. What we send into the life of others, comes back into our own.

a proverb

As you sow, so shall you reap. (in hindi too.. jaisi karni, waisi bharni.)

a scientific law

Every action has an equal an opposite reaction.

Over and above all the debate and question and logic, what is required is a deep sense of compassion towards all life forms, howsoever small or big. Killing animals takes out the 'kind'ness out of 'Man-kind'. Every living being wants to live and has the right to do so. Given a choice, everyone would like to live, not die. So do the animals.

Just put yourself in the shoes of the victim and think.

[It was by chance that I was born a vegetarian. And it is by choice that I am still one. I intend to live by the principles of non-violence and impart as much 'abhaydaan' (fearlessness ' as opposed to terror) as possible to all the living beings. Wouldn't you love to do so too?]

Sequel

December 9th, 2008

Since the recent Mumbai attacks, I have been flooded with angry e-mails and SMS. Newspaper articles, discussions and not to forget, Blogs too talk of the same. There is so much anger that is visible, targeted not just at the terrorists but also on the politicians and also the intelligence agencies.

Why are the people angry now? Because this was a new flavour of terrorism? Unheard of or unseen before?

Why were they not angry earlier? When

Thousands of people die in custody even before trial starts. Many of them could be innocent and victims of police excesses (read third degree). Terrorism.

Thousands of innocents are remanded into custody without proper evidence. Terrorism.

Thousands of innocent people are victims of false evidences fabricated against them. Terrorism.

Thousands of innocent people are ousted from their homes for the so called development projects ' whether it be a SEZ or a dam or an industry or whatever. Terrorism.

Thousands of innocent women and children are harassed, beaten, threatened, sold, raped or murdered. Terrorism.

Thousands of people (or the governments that got elected by the people) openly support terrorists. (These bunch of people are more worse than the terrorists themselves.) Many of the political parties are openly supporting LTTE ' a terrorist organization banned by 30 or more countries. And remember it was responsible for our former PM's death. Terrorism.

Innocent Children being made to work. And many a times under extreme conditions. They are also victims of physical abuse of all kinds. Terrorism.

Social oppression of the weak in so many many forms ' physical, psychological and financial. Terrorism.

Most of the computer games are full of violence, blood and gore. The lines between virtual and real are getting blurred. Children take to guns and what we have is massacres in schools too. Terrorism.

Then there is state terrorism, economic terrorism, geographical terrorism etc. I can give you thousands of other instances. I label each of them terrorism. There will be thousands or lakhs of stories for each of the above. My heart used to be seething with anger then. My sympathies were with the victims.

So you dint have a direct hand in any of the above, right? Read on then .

Movies of late are full of sex and violence and revenge. They 'educate' the unknowing minds of such happenings. By watching such movies and allowing children to watch such movies we too indirectly abet terror.

Millions of INNOCENT animals are KILLED and eaten all over the world EVERYDAY by MAN. Day after day. Day and night. Relentlessly.Chicken. Goats. Pigs. Cattle. Rabbits. Deer. Fish. Lobsters the list will go on and on. An endless list. Terrorism.

So you say that you are a vegetarian and you don't eat non-veg, right?

Now consider this.

Millions more are TORTURED, MAIMED, DISSECTED, INJECTED, BLINDED, OPERATED (mostly without anesthetics) and KILLED (or left to die a gruesome death) in and around all kinds of research labs of drugs, toiletries and cosmetics companies. Terrorism. (Why? Just for our selfish desires to look good, young or for overcoming diseases. We have no right whatsoever to do so against those hapless animals.)

Millions more are killed to be used directly in the production of unnecessary articles like all leather products, shawls, fur, silk etc. Elephants and Rhinos are killed for their tusks and horns. Terrorism.

I label each of the above too as Terrorism.

So who is responsible for all these forms of terrorism?

In my previous post I had asked and now, I would like to ask you again, who is a bigger terrorist?

Man

or

God?

Bigger Terrorist?

December 2nd, 2008

Recent Mumbai Terror Attacks : 200 dead; 500 injured

Ahmedabad 2008 Serial Bombings : 200 dead and 500 injured

Bangalore 2008 Serial Bombings : 100 dead and 200 injured

Delhi serial bombings : similar figures

Now look at these figures:

Tsunami in Dec 2006 : 10000 dead and lakhs rendered homeless

Earthquake in Kashmir : 20000 dead and lakhs rendered homeless

Earthquake in Gujarat : 50000 dead and lakhs rendered homeless

Who is a bigger terrorist?

Man for the former?

or

GOD for the latter?

(all statistics are approximate and no reference was taken from any source whatsoever. even replacing these approximate figures with real ones wont make my question change is stance. i am sure the equation will remain the same.)

Food for the Soul

September 26th, 2007

We all go for a break every now and then. That break may be asshort as for a day or as long as even a year. (I know of an iLander who is on a 6 month break or maybe even 8.. not sure).

And that break may be for several reasons.

Perhaps just to unwind.
Or maybe to see a new place.
Or maybe to pursue a hobby.
Or to recover from some illness.
Or maybe just to relax.
Or maybe to splurge on a windfall lottery.

I aint taking a break for any of the above reasons. Usually
I need a break only for two reasons ' one to relax and unwind and the other to
see new places (or alternatively to pursue a hobby ' like I went skiing.)

The upcoming break is purely to provide food for the soul.
In our daily grind, we do so much for everybody but nothing for our own selves.
I am not going to dwelve too much into that discussion here, but you can take
that at its face value.

I am onto my annual spiritual sojourn. Back to the roots of
my ancestors. To my Guru who is there. To attain more spiritual knowledge. To
be more disciplined in life. I had been there a year back. And thus I am
undertaking this trip this year too to my village. And god willing, shall strive to do so every year.

I will have a totally isolated life there.
No junk food.
No newspapers.
No TV.
No internet.
No gossip.
No outings or shopping.
Believe me
NO sms' either. (that's the tuffest part )

You people might think how can one live a life like that.
But believe me. Life is total bliss. You have to live like that once in a
while. A life devoid of clutter ' both physical and mental clutter.

So I will be off the iLand for the next few weeks.
I will be off the sms network too.
I will be off the mobile network too.

Being just HAPPY is out.

Being BLISSFUL is in.

Day of Universal Forgiveness

September 16th, 2007

Today is the last day of our festival Paryushan. It is called "Savantsri". This day is of utmost importance to us Jains. We are required to ask for forgiveness and give forgiveness to all the living beings in this world.

Today is the day of Universal Forgiveness.

I may have hurt your feelings knowingly or unknowingly thro mind, speech and body. On this day of universal forgiveness, I humbly ask for forgiveness from all of you ' "Michchami Dukkadam".

I am presenting a great poem written by a great saint Srimad Rajchandra below. The actual Gujarati poem is reproduced first and below that a translation done by me.

Maitri bhaavnu pavitra zarno, mujh haiyaa maa vayaa kare
Subh thaao aa shakal vishwa nu, evi bhavana nitya rahe

Gunn thi bharela gunijan dekhi, haiyu maaru nritya kare
Ae santon na charan kamal ma, mujh jeevan nu arth rahe

Deen krur ne dharm vihona, dekhi dil ma dard rahe
Karuna bhini aankho maathi, ashru no shrot vahe

Marg bhulela jivan pathik ne, marg chindva oobho rahun
Kare upeksha ae marg ni, toye samta chith dharoon

Vir prabhu ni dharm bhavna, haiye sau manav lave
Ver zer na pap tyaji ne, mangal geeto ae gaave, prabhu, mangal geeto sau gaave.

Meaning:
Let the noble thought of friendship flow through my heart
Let goodness prevail over the entire world ' let this thought prevail over me.

My heart dances when it sees goodness flowing from good people
Let my spirit bow and touch the feet of the great saints.

Let my heart feel the pain when I see the poor, down-trodden and without dharma
And a stream of tears flow through my compassionate eyes.

I will show the right path to those who have forgotten the righteous path
And be patient enough to stand there even if I have to face difficulties.

The Lord's great spirit, brings out the humaneness in all
And burying our enmity and sins, we sing his praises, Lord, all sing the praises.

Note:
I have never attempted to translate Gujarati before, much less such noble hymn. So, the thought and meaning conveyed gets diluted a bit. But then, one can still understand the spirit and soul of the poem. Hope you all liked this poem.

Truth

April 8th, 2006

Truth - A Universal Word. Chased. Aspired. Fought Over. Cherished. Used. Abused. Bent. Twisted. Maligned. Held Dear. Thrown Out.
What all has been done to Truth. It really amazes me. But going deeper i really wonder what really is truth.

Because nowadays Truth also comes in many Flavours.
Universal Truth. Absolute Truth. Relative Truth. Half Truth. and half a dozen other flavours which one can contmeplate.
It is very very difficult to understand and pursue the Truth behind any event or circumstances.
For eg. How do you get the person who has committed a crime to admit that he has done it. By using third degree? even after that is one sure that it is the truth that is being sought is obtained? no. Similarly acts of terror are performed by one set of individuals, but the brains behind the acts are some other people. How does one go about getting to the bottom of the truth. inspite of all the machinery a state possesses - Police, Intelligence Agencies, Judiciary etc. it is highly unlikely that one gets behind the truth.
