January 24th, 2010

Borrowing the title from those Help Yourself books, I attempt to clear many doubts and also explain the various features available in this new blogging platform.

Shown above is the page that is displayed after signing into the new blog
thro new URL : http://blogs.rediff.com
1. Clicking on the link marked as 1 will take you to ‘My Page’ - another of rediff’s product and which is linked to our blogs by default. More of My Page later.
2. All comments are displayed on the blog only after Moderation. The circle marked 2 shows the links to the comments. Various options are provided within the comment itself.
3. Appearance of the blog is done thro this link. Clicking on the link leads you to Themes and Widgets. One can first preview a particular theme by clicking on the theme name or the thumbnail. And then if you like the theme, click on the ‘Activate the theme’ that is provided on the top right hand corner of the preview.
More on Widgets later.
4. Comments: I dont understand why another link is given.. but this link also leads you directly to Comment Moderation.
5. Other Tools and Settings: There are plethora of tools and settings which will help you shape your blog. Am writing more about that in the following paragraphs.

Clicking on the down arrow on Other Tools & Settings leads you to the following Pages:
1. LINKS: This displays all the links that are displayed on the main blog page of yours.
Rediff has included rediff.com and blogs.rediff.com on your page by default. I have added another link which can be seen from the following image.

Next is : Pages.
This basically lets you add more pages on your blog. For eg., I have added a Page ‘Quote of the Day’ Page alongside the About, Friends, Guest Book. Also Please note, pages can be nested and a tree can be created without any limits.

Next: Settings - General.
Clicking on this link will lead you a page with four tabs:
1. General
2. Writing
3. Reading
4. Discussion
First: General: You can edit your blog title and spice up your tag line. They will be displayed instead of the default URL which you earlier had and the tagline
“Broadcasting my thoughts”

2. Writing: As is shown below, you have options as to how you want your page to be displayed when you log in. I think the default setting are sufficient. But if you want to change …. well its great to tinker around with some experimentation.

3. Reading: There is no such necessity to change any settings on this page. But then, like i said, go ahead if you get the urge to do it…

4. Discussion: The Discussion Page was so so long, i couldnt display the entire page in one go.. so i have split it into three:

Guest Book: Clicking on Guest Book tab under settings will lead you directly to the GB.
Clicking on the Posts will give you the following choices:
Add New     Edit     Tags     Categories

One can add a new post or edit existing post, add tags to existing post and tinker around with categories.

And i noticed a new feature that rediff had added a couple of days back (probably on Jan 21 or 22, 2010) - Blog Catalog. This is visible alongside your Home and My Blogs on your sign in page landing. Clicking on it leads you to an alphabetical list of all the bloggers. Great way to trace known and unknown bloggers on rediff.
