HOW TO BRING UP A CHILD

February 27th, 2010
HOW TO BRING UP A CHILD

As children grow, they are surrounded by many

people other than their parents. Their behavior and

personality is influenced by their teachers, friends

and relatives. In fact, they add traits to their own life.

We must provide space and freedom to children to

help them learn and recognize their skills.

A popular phrase from Indian philosophy

says, Satyam shivam sundaram, which means

truth (satya) is God (Shiv) and God (Shiv) is beautiful

(sunder) i.e. truth is God and God is

beautiful. According to this approach, we should

nurture our children with values such as truth, beauty

and honesty. These values are imbibed at home, at

school and various other social setups.

There are certain qualities that children should

possess and for which we all should put conscious

effort while grooming them. Therefore, parents and

teachers should work in cooperation to build a

suitable environment around the children that helps

them:

At school:

Make friends and enjoy playing when they are in the

playground.

At home:

Form a habit of sleeping at bed-time.

At social setups:

These qualities are positive attitudes that can be

developed amongst children by exposing them to

values. From a very early stage, children should be

prepared to face the situations that they will have to

face in today’s world. They should be taught values

through questioning, role plays, critically analyzing

the paths to be taken and predicting outcomes. If

efforts are genuinely made by parents and care is

taken while educating children, they will grow up as

good human beings, who are intelligent, honest,

punctual, friendly, courageous and those who are

able to differentiate between right and wrong and

likewise implement them in their
lives.

Therefore, parents and teachers need to educate

children in such a manner that they imbibe all good

qualities one can think of. Educating children in this

manner will help them develop good traits,

characters and personalities. They will also be able to

possess the following qualities:

Good-Temperament:

Children will have strength to control their anger

when things seem to go against them or decisions

are not made in their favor.

Truthfulness:

They will develop confidence and never be scared to

say the truth whatever be the consequences.

Honesty:

Children will learn to be honest to themselves and to

others as well.

Patience:

Children will be able to acquire a habit that will help

give them strength not to get disheartened if they

have to wait for long to see the results of their

efforts.

Endurance:

They will be able to enhance a sense of endurance

that will help them face inevitable difficulties and

sufferings without grumbling.

Modesty:

They will develop a positive attitude and not become

conceited over their success and also will not feel

themselves superior to their comrades.

They will be able to appreciate the merits of
others

and help others to succeed.

Acceptance:

Children will be able to maintain equilibrium and

readiness in success as well as in failure.

Courage:

They will be able to strengthen their
power to fight

continuously till the final victory, though they may

meet with many defeats.

Cheerfulness:

They will adapt a healthy attitude and know how to

smile and keep a happy heart in all circumstances.

Intelligence:

They will be able to enhance their will power, pay

attention to their lessons and put effort to

understand everything that is told.

Obedience:

Children will learn to be obedient and maintain

discipline in their day-to-day life.

Perseverance:

They will develop steady and persistent attitude in

their effort, no matter how long it has to last.

Optimistic:

They will be able to build faith in the future, which is

rich and full of beauty and light.

Childhood is a symbol of future and the hope of all victories to come.”

Simple Rules of LIFE..

Life is about correcting mistakes

February 24th, 2010
THIS IS ESPECIALLY FOR

COUPLES BUT EVEN SINGLES

CAN LEARN A THING OR

TWO FROM
IT.

ENJOY!

'Life is About
Correcting Mistakes

Jocelyn married William this day. At the end of the wedding
party, Jocelyn’s mother gave her a newly opened bank saving passbook. With $1000 deposit amount.

Mother:
‘Jocelyn, take this passbook. Keep it as a record of your marriage
life. When there’s something happy and memorable happened in your new
life, put some money in. Write down what it’s about next to the line.
The more memorable the event is, the more money you can put in. I’ve
done the first one for you today. Do the others with William. When you
look back after years, you can know how much happiness you’ve had.’

'Life is About Correcting Mistakes

Jocelyn
shared this with William when getting home. They both thought it was a
great idea and were anxious to know when the second deposit can be made.

This was what they did after certain time:

- 7 Feb: $100, first birthday celebration for William after marriage
- 1 Mar: $300, salary raise for Jocelyn
- 20 Mar: $200, vacation
trip to Bali
- 15 Apr: $2000, Jocelyn got pregnant
- 1 Jun: $1000, William got promoted

…. and so on…

'Life is About Correcting Mistakes

However,
after years, they started fighting and arguing for trivial things. They
didn’t talk much. They regretted that they had married the most nasty
people in the world…. no more love…Kind of typical nowadays, huh?

One
day Jocelyn talked to her Mother: ‘Mom, we can’t stand it anymore. We
agree to divorce. I can’t imagine how I decided to marry this guy!!!’

'Life
is About Correcting Mistakes

Mother:
‘Sure, girl, that’s no big deal. Just do whatever you want if you
really can’t stand it. But before that, do one thing first. Remember
the saving passbook I gave you on your wedding day? Take out
all money and spend it first. You shouldn’t keep any record of such a
poor marriage.’

Jocelyn thought it was true. So she went to the bank, waiting at
the queue and planning to cancel the account. While she was waiting,
she took a look at the passbook record. She looked, and looked, and
looked. Then the memory of all the previous joy and happiness just came
up her mind. Her eyes were then filled with tears. She left and went
home. When she was home, she handed the passbook to William, asked him
to spend the money before getting divorce.

The next day, William gave the passbook back to Jocelyn. She found
a new deposit of $5000. And a line next to the record: ‘This is the day
I notice how much I’ve loved you thru out all these years. How much
happiness you’ve brought me.’

'Life is About Correcting Mistakes

They
hugged and cried, putting the passbook back to the safe. Do you know
how muchmoney they had saved when they retired? I did not ask. I
believe the money did not matter any more after they had gone thru all
the good years in their life.

When you fall, don’t see the place where

you fell, instead see the place from

where you slipped. Life is about

correcting
mistakes

Frequently
Asked
Questions

1.
Does excessive eating of salt increase blood
pressure?

Ans: Yes and
No

Yes in certain individuals who are salt sensitive,
while this does not happen in those who are salt
insensitive
.

2. What are the foods to be
avoided by BP patients

Ans: (a) Salted
snacks e.g. Potato wafers
(b) Pickles and
papads
(c) Ketchups
(d) Salted meat / salted sea
food
(e) Excess of fat

3. Will eating fruits cause
cold
?

Ans: Cold is
caused by a virus. Most fruits rich in vitamin C (like
oranges), in fact can protect against frequent attacks
of cold. Some people may be allergic to certain foods
which may include fruits. They should find out by trial
and error and try and avoid only those fruits.

4. Is it good to drink water
while eating? Will it reduce digestion?

Ans: There is no
evidence to suggest this. Some feel that it may dilute
the digestive enzymes, but this does not occur, because
the intestines produce several times more enzymes than
what is actually required for digestion. Water intake
may however fill the stomach and thereby give a feeling
of fullness. This is common among children.

5. Are artificial sweeteners
harmful?

Ans: Scientific
data does not indicate that either saccharine or
aspartame are harmful to humans

6. Which is the best source of
calcium? Will calcium tablets prevent
fracture?

Ans: Best source
of calcium is milk. To a certain extent calcium tablets
@ 500 mg/day would help. Women should take calcium well
before onset of menopause, as more than 50% of the
calcium in the bones is lost during the first 5 years of
menopause itself

7. Which of the cooking oils
are good for health?

Ans: All oils
are good in one way or the other. Groundnut oil, mustard
oil are very good. It is always suggested to use a
combination of oils either blended or by rotation. e.g.
Groundnut oil, soya bean oil, sunflower oil, rice bran
oil so that you get the benefit of all. Sunflower / any
single oil alone is not preferred.

8. Which is the best way to
lose weight?

Ans: A
combination of physical activity of atleast a 30 minute
walk per day with a moderation in calorie intake would
do wonders. Drastic weight loss programs can be rarely
sustained. Just avoiding refined sugars, disserts, deep
fried foods, dairy and bakery products, aerated bottled
drinks itself can cut down a large amount of calories.
Consuming atleast 400 gms of fruits and vegetables can
also avoid the hunger.

9. Will eating tomatoes and
palak
cause stones in the
kidney?

Ans:
No! These
are unfounded fears. Eating tomatoes and palak may be
little harmful to those who are prone to the problem of
formation of stones in the
kidneys

Smiling is infectious,

You catch it like the
flu,

When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I passed around the
corner,
And someone saw my grin,
When he smiled I realized,
I’d passed
it on to him.

I thought about that
smile,
Then realized its worth,
A single smile, just like mine,
Could
travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile
begin,
Don’t leave it undetected.
Let’s start an epidemic quick,
And
get the world infected..

Send this smiling heart
to

everybody you like.

The Mayonnaise Jar

February 21st, 2010
The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seem
, almost too much to handle,

When 24 Hours in a day is not enough,
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class

and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students, if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open Areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

‘Now,’ said the professor, as the laughter subsided,

‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things - family,
children, health, Friends, and Favorite passions –
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, Your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else –The small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ He continued,
there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are important to you.

So…

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play With your children.

Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

‘Take care of the golf balls first –
The things that really matter.

Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.
‘I’m glad you asked’.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,

there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.’

Please share this with other “Golf Balls”

I just did……
