Introduction

Good Friday, the Friday within Holy Week, is traditionally a time of fasting and penance, commemorating the anniversary of Christ’s crucifixion and death. The evening (at sunset) of Good Friday begins the second day of the Triduum. Good Friday worship services begin in the afternoon at 3:00 (the time Jesus likely died). Various traditions and customs are associated with the Western celebration of Good Friday. The singing (or preaching) of the Passion of St. John’s gospel consists of reading or singing parts of John’s gospel. The Veneration of the Cross is also common, where Christians approach a wooden cross and venerate it. In addition to these traditions, Holy Communion with the reserved host is practiced. In the modern Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, no Masses are said on Good Friday or Holy Saturday therefore the reser ved host from the Holy Maunday Mass is used. This is called the “Mass of the Pre-Sanctified.” Another service started by the Jesuit Alphonso Messia in 1732, now less common, the Tre Ore or “Three Hours,” is often held from noon until 3:00PM, and consists of seven sermons on the seven last words of Christ. This service has been popular in many Protestant churches. Good Friday, along with Ash Wednesday, is an official fast day of the Catholic Church.

The Eastern Churches have different customs for the day they call “the Great Friday.” The Orthodox Church begins the day with Matins (Morning Prayer), where the “Twelve Gospels” is chanted, which consists of 12 passages drawn from the Passion narratives. In the morning, the “Little Hours” follow one after the other, consisting of Gospel, Epistle, and Prophet readings. Vespers (Evening Prayer) ends with a solemn veneration of the epitaphion, an embroidered veil containing scenes of Christ’s burial. Compline (Night Prayer) includes a lamentation placed on the Virgin Mary’s lips. On Good Friday night, a symbolic burial of Christ is performed. Traditionally, Chaldean and Syrian Christians cease using their customary Shlama greeting (”peace be with you”) on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, because Judas greeted Christ this way. They use the phrase “The light of God be with your departed ones” instead. In Russia, the tradition is to bring out a silver coffin, bearing a cross, and surrounded with candles and flowers. The faithful creep on their knees and kiss and venerate the image of Christ’s body painted on the “winding sheet” (shroud).

History

The celebration of Good Friday is ancient, and some of the practices associated with Good Friday are attested to by Egeria in the 4th century. The day gradually became a time of penance and fasting as the anniversary of the death of Christ. The name “Good Friday” possibly comes from “God’s Friday,” although the exact reason for the current name is unclear. Various churches observe Good Friday in addition to Catholics and Eastern Christians. Anglicans, Methodists, and Lutherans all observe Good Friday to varying degrees.

Hanuman Jayanti

Introduction

HanumanJayanti is a hindu festival celebrated all over India to commemorate the birth of Lord Hanuman. He was born to (Wind-God) Kesari and Anjani. According to legends he was born as a monkey god to serve Parmatama Lord Ram.

A Brief Background

Hanumanji was given birth after a number of divine events. Anjani performed penance and Lord Shiva was pleased, so blessed her.He was granted a son after Vayu, the Wing God also blessed him.

Lord Hanuman was born on the chaitra Shukla Purnima(Full moon day on the Hindu Calendar Month of Chaitra). Also called by the names, Maruti, Pavanputra, Bajrangbali and Mahavira.

Specialities of Hanuman

In most Hanuman mandirs, Lord Hanuman is worshiped either along with Lord Ram or seperately in temples. Also known as an avatara of Lord Rama, he is considered the God of power (Maruti). He was a brahmachari or celebate. Hanuman became a legend mainly for his unflinching devotion and loyalty for Paramatma Lord Ram.

He was an ideal karma yogi for his fearless, selfless service, humility and devotion for Lord Ram.Lord Hanuman is the only deity that cannot be troubled by negative energies.

Celebration

Priests bathe the idol of Hanuman and smear it with oil and sindoor. Special prayers are held and Hanuman Chalisa is also recited by his devotees. This festival is more important among brahmacharis, body builders and wrestlers. Spiritual discourses are held on this day from dawn and prasads are distributed only after sunset. Saturday and Tuesday are considered as auspicious days to worship Lord Hanuman.Hanumanji is considered as a symbol of strength and energy. Lord Ram is remembered and prayed on this day.

What is hanuman”s original name?

Scholars argue that immediately after the birth of Hanuman his mother Anjana named him Sunder (handsome boy) as he was extremely charming owing to the Divine Power imbibed in him. In support of this supposition a number or scholars say that the fifth chapter of the Ramcharitmanas which abounds in great and glorious deeds of Hanuman has been entitled as Sunder Kand (so also in Valmiki  Ramayana).

Do You Have Stress In Life Or Work

March 28th, 2010
A group of working adults got together to visit their University lecturer.
The lecturer was happy to see them. Conversation soon turned into
complaints about stress in work and life.

The Lecturer just smiled and went to the kitchen to get an

assortment of cups - some porcelain, some in plastic,
some in glass, some plain looking and some
looked rather expensive and exquisite.

The Lecturer offered his former students

the cups to get drinks for themselves.

When all the students had a cup in hand with water, the Lecturer spoke:
“If you noticed, all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken up,
leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.

While it is normal that you only want the best for yourselves,
that is the source of your problems and stress. What all you
wanted was water, not the cup, but we
unconsciously went for the better cups.”

“Just like in life, if Life is Water, then the jobs,

money and position in society are the cups.
They are just tools to hold/maintain Life,
but the quality of Life doesn’t change.”

“If we only concentrate on the cup,

we won’t have time to enjoy/taste the water in it..”

Life is what we make it,
always has been, always will be.

Nobody will forget - Bhagat,Sukhdev & Rajguru, Our real Heros

March 23rd, 2010
Nobody will forget - Bhagat,Sukhdev & Rajguru, Our real Heros

Sukhdev Thapar was an Indian freedom fighter who lived from 15 May
1907 to March 23, 1931). He is best known as an accomplice of Bhagat
Singh and Shivaram Rajguru in the killing of a British police officer
J.P. Saunders in 1928 in order to take revenge for the death of veteran
leader Lala Lajpat Rai due to excessive police beating.

Shivaram Hari Rajguru (August 24, 1908 - March 23, 1931) was an
Indian revolutionary  from Maharashtra and belonged to the Deshastha
Brahmin community. Rajguru was born in a place named Khed near Pune. It
was later renamed as Rajgurunagar in his honor.

Since childhood, Bhagat Singh was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s
views. As a child of 13, he would should slogans against the British and
promote the Non-Cooperation Movement of Gandhi. But when Gandhi called
off the movement he was disheartened. He was deeply affected by the
Jalianwala Bagh massacre in Punjab. After witnessing the death of Lala
Lajpat Rai at the hands of the British Police Chief Scott, Bhagat vowed
revenge.

Such was the popularity of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev that
the British Government was afraid of public outrage. In a very strategic
manner, the hanging of the three was preponed. According to then SP of
the Lahore Jail, V N Smith: “it was decided to act at once before the
public could become aware of what had happened…At about 7pm slogans of
Inquilab Zindabad were heard from inside the jail…a signal that the
final curtain was about to be dropped.”

Later, Bhagat Singh and Batukehswar Dutt (B K Dutt) were sentenced
to ‘transportation of life’ for bombing the Assembly in 1929. The
British Government came to know of his involvement in the Saunders’
murder case, and nabbed Rajguru and Sukhdev also. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru
and Sukhdev were prosecuted for the murder charges and were given life
sentence and were hanged on March 23, 1931.

Along with fellow revolutionaries Shivaram Rajguru, Sukhdev Thapar
and Jai Gopal (who identified Scott) Bhagat planned to kill Scott.
However, in a case of mistaken identify, Gopal signaled at J P Saunders
and they shot at DSP of Police Saunders instead of Scott. They went
underground.

Bomb in the assembly

In the face of actions by the
revolutionaries, the British government enacted the Defence of India Act
to give more power to the police. The purpose of the Act was to combat
revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh. The Act was defeated in the council
by one vote. However, the Act was then passed under the ordinance that
claimed that it was in the best interest of the public. In response to
this act, the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association planned to
explode a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly where the ordinance
was going to be passed. Originally, Chandrashekhar Azad, another
prominent leader of the revolutionary movement attempted to stop Bhagat
Singh from carrying out the bombing. However, the remainder of the party
forced him to succumb to Singh’s wishes. It was decided that Bhagat
Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt, another revolutionary, would throw the bomb
in the assembly.

On April 8, 1929, Singh and Dutt threw a bomb onto the corridors of
the assembly and shouted “Inquilab Zindabad!” (”Long Live the
Revolution!”).This was followed by a shower of leaflets stating that it
takes a loud voice to make the deaf hear.[16] The bomb neither killed
nor injured anyone; Singh and Dutt claimed that this was deliberate on
their part, a claim substantiated both by British forensics
investigators who found that the bomb was not powerful enough to cause
injury, and by the fact that the bomb was thrown away from people. Singh
and Dutt gave themselves up for arrest after the bomb.[citation needed]
He and Dutt were sentenced to ‘Transportation for Life’ for the bombing
on June 12, 1929.

Lala Lajpat Rai’s death and the Saunders murder

The British
government created a commission under Sir John Simon to report on the
current political situation in India in 1928. The Indian political
parties boycotted the commission because it did not include a single
Indian as its member and it was met with protests all over the country.
When the commission visited Lahore on October 30, 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai
led the protest against Simon Commission in a silent non-violent march,
but the police responded with violence. Lala Lajpat Rai was beaten with
lathis at the chest. He later succumbed to his injuries. Bhagat Singh,
who was an eyewitness to this event, vowed to take revenge.[citation
needed] He joined with other revolutionaries, Shivaram Rajguru, Jai
Gopal and Sukhdev Thapar, in a plot to kill the police chief. Jai Gopal
was supposed to identify the chief and signal for Singh to shoot.
However, in a case of mistaken identity, Gopal signalled Singh on the
appearance of J. P. Saunders, a Deputy Superintendent of Police. Thus,
Saunders, instead of Scott, was shot. Bhagat Singh quickly left Lahore
to escape the police. To avoid recognition, he shaved his beard and cut
his hair, a violation of the sacred tenets of Sikhism.

Even
Though Mahatma Gandhi had a chance to save him but a theory says he was
not willing to save him fearing the lack of publicity for himself. Its
not proven but remains as a fact on the believers of Real Hero’s
