11 Habits That Will Help You Live to 100

While those are some of the obvious steps you can take to age well, researchers have discovered that centenarians tend to share certain traits in how they eat, move about, and deal with stress—the sorts of things we can emulate to improve our own aging process. Of course, getting to age 100 is enormously more likely if your parents did. Still, Thomas Perls, who studies the century-plus set at Boston University School of Medicine, believes that assuming you’ve sidestepped genes for truly fatal diseases like Huntington’s, “there’s nothing stopping you from living independently well into your 90s.” Heck, if your parents and grandparents were heavy smokers, they might have died prematurely without ever reaching their true potential lifespan, so go ahead and shoot for those triple digits. Follow these 12 habits and check out Perls’ lifetime risk calculator to see how long you can expect to live.
That may help keep your arteries healthy. A 2008 New York University study showed that daily flossing reduced the amount of gum-disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria is thought to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation in the arteries, a                                                           major risk factor for heart disease. Other research has shown that those who have high amounts of bacteria in their mouth are more likely to have thickening in their arteries, another sign of heart disease. ”I really do                                                         think people should floss twice a day to get the biggest life expectancy benefits,” says Perls.
Exercise is the only real fountain of youth that exists,” says Jay Olshansky, a professor of medicine and aging researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “It’s like the oil and lube job for your car. You don’t have to do it, but your car will definitely run better.” Study after study has documented the benefits                                                           of exercise to improve your mood, mental acuity, balance, muscle mass, and bones. “And the benefits kick in immediately after your first workout,” Olshansky adds. Don’t worry if you’re not a gym rat. Those who see the biggest payoffs are the ones who go from doing nothing to simply walking around the neighborhood or local mall for about 30 minutes a day.                                                           Building muscle with resistance training is also ideal,                                                           but yoga classes can give you similar strength-training effects if you’re not into weight lifting.
Centenarians tend to live by strict routines, says Olshansky, eating the same kind of diet and doing the same kinds of activities their whole lives. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is another good habit to keep your body in the steady equilibrium                                                           that can be easily disrupted as you get on in years. “Your physiology becomes frailer when you get older,”                                                           explains Ferrucci, “and it’s harder for your body to bounce back if you, say, miss a few hours of sleep one night or drink too much alcohol.” This can weaken immune defenses, leaving you more susceptible to circulating flu viruses or bacterial infections.
Having regular social contacts with friends and loved ones is key to avoiding depression, which can lead to premature death, something that’s particularly prevalent in elderly widows and widowers. Some psychologists even think that one of the biggest benefits elderly folks get from exercise the strong social interactions that come from walking with a buddy or taking a group exercise class. Having a daily connection with a close friend or family member gives older folks the added benefit of having someone watch their back. “They’ll tell you if they think your memory is going or if you seem more withdrawn,” says Perls, “and they might push you to see a doctor before                                                           you recognize that you need to see one yourself.”

Health habits

1.          Exercise 30 minutes every day. Especially if you don’t do much movement while working, it is essential that you get some daily exercise. 30 minutes every day are the minimum recommended for optimal health.

2.          Eat breakfast every day. Breakfast is the more important meal of the day, yet so many people skip it. Personally, I like to eat a couple of toasts in the morning along with a fruit beverage.

3.          Sleep 8 hours. Sleep deprivation is never a good idea. You may think that you are gaining time by sleeping less, when in reality you are only gaining stress and tiredness. 8 hours are a good number of hours for most people, along with an optional 20 minutes nap after lunch.

4.          Avoid snacking between meals. Snacking between meals is the best way to gain weight. If you are hungry, eat something concrete. Otherwise don’t. Update: for clarification, I mean don’t eat junk food between meals, but eating real food it’s ok.

5.          Eat five portions of fruits and vegetables every day. Our body and brain loves getting vegetables and fruit, so I highly recommend eating as much of them as possible. Five portions is the dose that’s usually recommended by many health associations.

6.          Eat fish. Fish is rich of omega 3 and other healthy elements. At least one meal per week of fish should be enough for getting all these nutrients.

7.          Drink one glass of water when you wake up. When you wake up, your body is dehydrated and needs liquid. Make the habit of drinking one glass of water after you wake up in the morning. Also, drink more during the day.

8.          Avoid soda. Soda is often one of the un-healthiest beverages you can find. Limit your consumption of soda as much as possible and your body will be grateful for that.

9.          Keep your body clean. I don’t advise spending your day in front of the mirror, but a minimum of personal care does never hurt.

10.      If you smoke, stop it. There is no reason to smoke anymore, and quitting is possible.

11.      If you drink, stop it. Same as above. Don’t think that alcohol will solve your problems. It never does. The only exception is one glass of wine per day during meals.

12.      Take the stairs. This is just a hack that forces you to do a minimum of exercise. Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs.

Productivity habits

1.          Use an inbox system. Make the habit of keeping track of all the ideas and things that comes to mind. You can use a notebook to do this, and then sync everything on your computer.

2.          Prioritize. If you have a list of things to do, where do you start? One way is to prioritize your list. If you are in doubt, ask yourself: If I could only accomplish one thing today, what would it be?

3.          Plan, but not too much. Planning is important, and you should decide in advance what you are going to do today or this week. However, planning for more than a few weeks is usually inefficient, so I would not worry too much about that.

4.          Wake up early. Waking up early in the morning is a great way to gain extra time. I personally like to wake up at 5 am, so that by 9 am I have already accomplished what otherwise would have taken me many days.

5.          Check your email only twice per day. Email can easily become an addiction, but it is usually unnecessary to check it every 10 minutes. Make an effort and check your email only once or twice per day, see if the world will still rotate as before after you try this.

6.          Eliminate unimportant tasks. Being busy all day does not mean you are doing important stuff. Eliminate every activity that is not important, and focus on what really matters.

7.          Clean off your desk and room. Having a clear room and desk is important to maintain focus and creativity.

8.          Automate. There are a lot of tasks that you need to perform every day or every week. Try to automate them as much as possible.

9.          Set strict deadlines. When you do something, decide in advance when you are going to stop. There is a rule that states that you will fulfill all the time you have available for completing a task, so make an habit of setting strict deadlines for maximizing your productivity.

10.      Take one day off per week. Instead of working every day, take one day off per week (for example Friday / Sunday) where you are not going to turn on your computer. Use that time for doing recreational activities like going for a walk.

Personal Development habits

1.          Read 1 book per week. Reading is a good way to keep your brain active. With just 30 minutes per day you should be able to read one book per week, or more than 50 books per year.

2.          Solve puzzles. Quizzes, word games, etc. are all good ways to exercise your brain.

3.          Think positively. You are what you think, all the time.

4.          Make fast decisions. Instead of thinking for one hour wherever you are going to do something, make your decisions as fast as possible (usually less than 1 minute).

5.          Wait before buying. Waiting 48 hours before buying anything is a tremendous money saver, try it.

6.          Meditate 30 minutes per day. A great way to gain clearness and peace is through meditation. 30 minutes are not a lot, but enough to get you started with meditation.

Career habits

1.          Start a blog. Blogging is one of the best way to put your word out. It does not have to be around a specific topic, even a personal blog will do.

2.          Build a portfolio. If your job is creating stuff, building a portfolio is a great way to show what you are capable of. You can also contribute stuff for free if that applies to your work.

What do you think?
What are the habits that
Changed your life?

Mahashivaratri Festival

Mahashivaratri Festival or the ‘The Night of Shiva’ is celebrated with devotion and religious fervor in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the deities of Hindu Trinity. Shivaratri falls on the moonless 14th night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Phalgun, which corresponds to the month of February - March in English Calendar. Celebrating the festival of Shivaratri devotees observe day and night fast and perform ritual worship of Shiva Lingam to appease Lord Shiva.

According to legend, this day marks the wedding anniversary of Lord Shiva and Parvati. With the marriage to Parvathi, the devotees had a god with form or Sagun Brahman. Without Parvathi, Shiva was a Nirgun Brahman or a formless entity. There is also the belief that Shiva manifested himself in the form of the Linga on this holy day.

The second legend attributes Shivaratri as a form of thanksgiving to the Lord, for protecting the universe from destruction. During Samudra Mathana or churning of the ocean, a deadly poison emanated. The poison was so deadly that even a drop would have destroyed the universe. When the gods to beseech him for help. Lord Shiva’s stomach represents the universe, so he drank the poison, but held it at his neck, turning it blue. That is why devotees hail him as Neelakanth.

Another legend says, on this day of Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva performed a special dance, the Thandava Nritya or the cosmic dance of creation, preservation and destruction. In this dance, Shiva destroys the old world and creates a new one. His dance represents the energy flowing through the world giving it the seasons, day and night and birth and death.

There is a fourth legend associated with Maha Shivaratri. Once, a hunter was unsuccessfully looking for a prey in the forest. He couldn’t find anything for the whole day. Towards evening, he climbed on a Bael tree and continued his wait. As he was drinking some water he had picked up at a stream earlier, a few drops fell on the ground below. Impatient with his wait, he plucked a few bael leaves and drops them down as well. Soon, a female deer or doe comes to the spring. When the hunter takes aim, the deer, having seen him, implores him to wait a just little bit more so that she can bid farewell to her kids. The hunter agrees. When the female deer comes back, the male deer accompanying her asks the hunter to shoot him instead. The foals then come forward and also plead with the hunter to take their lives instead. The hunter is moved with their sacrificial nature and unity and lets them all go. When he alights from the tree, he is pleasantly surprised to see Lord Shiva there.

Actually, underneath the bael tree, there was a Shiva Lingam nestled in the thicket there. The hunter had unknowingly worshipped that lingam by sprinkling water and throwing bael leaves on it. When he had exhibited compassion to the deer family even in dire hunger, he had pleased Lord Shiva. As a result, Lord Shiva bestowed wealth and prosperity on him. From that day, the Shiva lingam is worshipped on this auspicious day, and hailed as Maha Shivaratri.

When is Shivaratri?

Maha Shivaratri 2012 is on February 20, Monday

Auspicious festival of Mahashivaratri falls on the 13th or the 14th night of the new moon during Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Phalgun. The Sanskrit term, Krishna Paksha means the period of waning moon or the dark fortnight and Phalguna corresponds to the month of February - March in English Calendar. Shivaratri Festival is celebrated on a moonless night. According to Hindu mythology, Shivaratri or ‘Shiva’s Great Night’ symbolizes the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Many however, believe, Shivaratri is the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya - the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. Celebrating the festival in a customary manner, devotees give a ritual bath to the Lingam with the panchagavya - milk, sour milk, urine, butter and dung. Celebrations of Shivaratri Festival mainly take place at night. Devotees of Lord Shiva throng Shiva temples across the country and spend ‘the Night of Lord Shiva’ by chanting verses and hymns in praise of the Lord. The festival holds special meaning for the ladies. They pray to Goddess Parvati also called ‘Gaura’, the giver of ’suhag’ for good husbands, marital bliss and a long and prosperous married life. Significance of Shivaratri in Hinduism Festival of Mahashivaratri has tremendous significance in Hinduism. According to sacred scriptures, ritual worship of Lord Shiva on Shivratrifestival that falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun pleases Lord Shiva the most. This fact is said to have been declared by Lord Shiva himself, when his consort Parvati asked him as to which ritual performed by his devotees pleases him the most. Even till date, devotees of Lord Shiva perform the ritual worship of Shivratri with care and devotion. They observe day and nigh fast and give sacred bath to Shiva Linga with honey, milk, water etc. Hindus consider it extremely auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on a Shivaratri as it is believed that worship of Lord Shiva with devotion and sincerity absolves a devotee of past sins. The devotee reaches the abode of Lord Shanker and lives there happily. He is also liberated from the cycle of birth and death and attains moksha or salvation. Significance of Shivaratri for Women Mahashivratri Festival is also considered to be an extremely significant festival by women. Married and unmarried women observe fast and perform Shiva Puja with sincerity to appease Goddess Parvati who is also regarded as ‘Gauri’ - one who bestows marital bliss and long and prosperous married life. Unmarried women also pray for a husband like Lord Shiva who is regarded as the ideal husband.

Friendship is a network  that needs no recharge, no roaming,

no activation, no signal problems. Just make sure

you don’t switch off your heart

Friendship is like standing  on a wet cement…

the longer you stay, the harder its to leave and you can never go

without leaving your footprints…

One of the best moments of life is to meet an old friend after years

and feel that things haven’t changed and you realise how much

you missed having him around…

Friendship is needless, like philosophy, like art it has no survival value,

rather it is one of those things that give value to survival

Friendship is like a tennis match; To win, you have to serve well,

and always remember it begins with love all

This message has no fat, no cholesterol and no additives.

Only natural flavors of care and love and joy it contains sweetness

but not as SWEET as you

Sometimes we must be Hurt in order to Grow,
Sometimes we must Fail in order toKnow
Sometimes we must Lose in order toGain,
Because some lessons in life are best learned through  PAIN….

Problems faced by Children in today’s world

Mom I don’t feel like going to school today! My class teacher is punishing me in front of my classmates! - Jenni complained

Dad I don’t like the color of the dress which you had bought for me! Yack even a beggar would not like this color! why did you purchase this one? - Timothy frowned

Mom what is this you have prepared for lunch? This one is tasting putrid. - Trisha shook her head

Jenni, Jemmy, Allan, Danny, Timothy, Trisha, Treya, Caren, Tanya, Tina, and you kids may be shouting like the above kids at home. Fighting with your parents for every trivial things. Do you know there are children in this world who are forbidden this freedom that you are enjoying in this world. Some of the common problems faced by the children of your age are given below:

Literacy Forbidden:

Children are frequently denied their right to an education on equal terms with their peers. They are denied their right based on various factors.
Children in conflict zones face tremendous dangers to reach schools in place where tension prevails.
Due to family situations, there are many children dropped out of the school in their early ages.
Worldwide children are harassed as they either belong to different social group or differ in color or belong to different religion and thus are undermined their opportunities to learn. It causes them to drop out of schools resulting in psychological trauma, physical and metal stress and even to death.

Terrorism:

Terrorist groups recruit and some time compel children to fight for their cause as Child Soldiers. This is a common practice in some of the countries in the world. They are either abducted or forced to join as soldiers. Children from the age group of 8-18 are recruited for this. In some countries children in the age group of 7 - 12 are trained as Paramilitaries.

Malnutrition:

Children of Third world countries are greatly affected by famine. Most of them suffer from Malnutrition and some are affected to the extreme level of starvation to death. Due to the economic conditions of these countries the availability of food is very less. Children in some of the under developed countries are attacked by chronic diseases and die due to lack of proper medical facilities to treat them.

Refugee and Migrant:

Children who migrate along due to war or famine are prone to the risk of abuse when they are separated from their parents and caregivers. When they are left unsecured, they can’t get food, shelter and clothes. They are branded as “ORPHANS” and their future turns out to be horrible.

Child Labour:

Children are pledged for some amount to reduce the financial burden in some families. When their parents fail to clear the debts, the owners prison the children and put them as child labourers in their factories, shops or fields.

In some families children are sent to work to earn the bread of the day for the family. Normally children are recruited everywhere. Be it a mill, newspaper distribution, mines, factories, hotels, etc., Some children are forced to rag picking, begging and smuggling.

There is no product that has not been scented by the sweat of a child labourer.
Such kind of problems attack the normal physical, intellectual, emotional and moral development of a child. Children who are in the growing process can permanently distort or disable their bodies when they carry heavy stress and loads of suffering on them. Children are less resistant to diseases and suffer the most.

Those children who suffer in their childhood are prone to become rogues, terrorists, thieves and anti-social elements. A child instead of becoming a good youth and further an element of making a good society takes the shape of the above.

But you children, how much more are you privileged and blessed than the children who are caught in the above problems. You have good parents who give us good food, colorful clothes, beautiful home, high-class education, modern toys, and what not. Are we truthful to the Almighty God who provides everything to us through our parents?

In Genesis 12:2, He says, “I will bless you and you shall be a blessing”. Yes, God has blessed us because He wants us to bless others.

We are under the wings of the Almighty, so we are safe and sound. But let us think about the children who have never tasted happiness in their life in this world. Let us not grumble ourselves that we are forbidden with some trivial things for which we are adamant. Next time when you see any children suffering don’t show faces but show them your love and affection.

Let us understand the problems of the Children who suffer and let’s uphold them in our prayers to turn their sufferings into joy. Our simple action could bring somewhere a change to somebody. Let’s intercede for such kind of children to our Almighty God to make a better world tomorrow.

Start each day with thanks to God
for the night of rest:
Then put your day in God’s good hands,
for He alone knows the best.

No one knows when life will end,
or what will come our way,
But we face the future full of hope
when we put God first each day.

“HAVE A BLESSED DAY”

Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States and is responsible for a growing list of cancers as well as chronic diseases including those of the lung and heart.
Tobacco, whether smoked, chewed or sniffed, contains nicotine, which is highly addictive, and contains over 60 carcinogens and 4000 chemicals. About half of all Americans who continue to smoke will die because of the habit.(2) The photo of a chronic smoker’s lung shows the many black deposits that are from years of smoking.photo courtesy of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 2007
Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body and is linked to at least 15 different cancers, according to the American Cancer Society.

People who stop smoking at younger ages experience the greatest health benefits from quitting. Those who quit by age 35 avoid 90% of the risk due to tobacco use. However, even smokers who quit after age 50 substantially reduce their risk of dying early. The argument that it is too late to quit smoking because the damage is already done is not true. (2)
Currently one out of four Americans smoke.(2) Approximately 80% of adult smokers started smoking before the age of 18. Every day, 4,000 young people under the age of 18 try their first cigarette, (3) with nearly 22% of all high school students smoking in 2003.
