King Sathya Harishchandra and his promises
Sathya Harishchandra a classic Kannada movie was produced 45 years ago by KCN Gowda, directed by Hunusur Krishnamurthy with melodious music by pandyala. It is now been released in Eastman colour as a tribute to veteran actor Dr.Rajkumar on his birth anniversary. It is our tribute to him to watch the same movie in Eastman colour after four and half decades. It is said; the hues of places, costumes of kings, queens and goddesses and the DTS effects of dialogues, background music–musical tracks upgraded the movie which made marvels for today’s audience.But, the question arises about its contemporary values, as to whether its “Sathyamarga” is still found relevant to these advanced days? Of course! It is my long standing findings also. What I have analyzed about this epic story, now I want to share the same.
Our ancient sages who depicted morality through mythological events of classic nature are everlasting. We are bound to adopt the principles and values contained therein, but with some sort of moderation only for the present..
While giving promises to others, we have to take care of our life. As the king Harishchandra faces tough tests in life, because of a challenge between Vashishta and Vishwamitra. While Vishwamitra asks Vashishta to show one person who follows sathyamarga the truthful life strictly, Vashishta mentions name of Raja Harishchandra. Vishwamitra was not convinced and want to test Harishchandra. Thus began king’s problems and goes his life very miserable up to the end.
Whatever may be the difficulties, maharaja Harishchandra had struggled to come over from all such difficulties and problems without compromising to leave his unflinching faith on Truth. It was shown in the movie as the Rajkumar enacted the key roll very tremendous, Pandaribai as queen Chandramthi and others put their good efforts in making the movie Very successful so as to convey its message to the universe. As the movie was super hit , and also won state and national awards; during those times.
Nowadays we find on many situations people say- Can we go strictly on Sathyamaraga like king Harishchandra…? It seems ridiculous for the present days. There is truth in it, but if we go through again to the epic story, to know what to follow and what not to follow…
Vishwamitra comes to test the king Harishchandra. He puts his demand of huge peak of wealth for at his disposal. As the kingdom of Harishcandra was very prosperous, rain fall from time to time, field’s crops growth, and totally there was abundance in his region. The people of those Vedic times were pious, god fearing followers of dharma. In those days the regency and regiment of the dynasty was actually under suggestions and on the justified verdicts of great maharishis, who were very much honored by thel kings.
As his kingdom was very prosperous during the first visit of maharishi Vishvamitra, Harishchandra agreed to give heaps of wealth demanded by him immediately and prepared to make disposal of the same at his end on the moment. But, maharishi Vishwamitra assumed a trick not to receive the same at that moment itself. He said to the king Harishchandra to keep that huge amount of wealth for some more time in his custody only; till he returns to take up. There was no word to mouth to refuse for the king Harishchandra as he was so bestowed and bow downed to mahrishi Vishvamitra’s status during those Vedic times and agrees with him to accept as his order. If he would have smoothly declined to keep such huge wealth back in his custody, perhaps the whole story would not have been continued further.
Hi Readers, if we just think about the situation, can we agree for paying such huge amount with promises, or make any small or big promises, but not thinking about future antecedents?
The decision at our side for the present days takes, while giving promises to others and keeping up the same being a ordinary people we must be very careful. Then the question of to give up Sathyamarga never arises. As we have seen our ministers, great politicians are ever ready to give bogus assurances and false promises, and latter to break up the same such worst examples we found in our politics.
