Fractured ….

Pooja looked around furtively. There was palpable tension on her face. Kavita smiled reassuringly at her, as if to say that "nothing to worry about." The lady from the doctor's chamber came outside and called, "Ms. Pooja". Pooja got up from her seat and with one last look at Kavita, went inside alone. Kavita went to one end of the lobby and dialed Paul's number from her cell phone

Pooja and Paul knew each other from their high school days. Soon their friendship grew into love and after finishing college and securing jobs they got married. After a blissful one and half years, trouble, slowly but surely, reared its head in their paradise. When all attempts to reconcile failed, they decided to get a divorce.  That was two years ago. It was painful for both of them moving on was easier said than done.

While Paul did manage to overcome and move on, Pooja's life got stuck. Initially she put up a very brave facade and immersed herself in her new life. Even she was not aware when the bitterness crept in and spread like a poison through her whole being .

She seemed to be obsessed with Paul like never before she never missed a chance to run him down in front of common friends. Pooja never missed a chance to drop "broad hints" in a "subtle way" about Paul's "role" in the failure of their marriage. Strangely, she never saw any fault of hers in the whole "mess". The chirpy, cheerful Pooja seemed to have undergone a metamorphosis,

She went to the extent of asking them (the common friends) to choose between friendship with her or with Paul. Friends, caught unwillingly in the middle of a storm, went from sympathizing to getting irritated with her. Slowly they started moving away from her. That is, all except her best friend Kavita.

Kavita knew that something needed to be done before it was too late! Pooja's whole being was fractured into two . Her hopes her beliefs, her trust, even her self-worth had been shattered when her marriage broke up! Though, she tried valiantly to put the pieces together, she gave up trying after a few feeble attempts.

Kavita had been informed of her friend's condition by none other than Paul. He had told her that Pooja needed help but he couldn't help her directly. She flared up at the very mention of his name. But, though their relationship had broken down, he still was fond of her.

Somehow, Kavita had managed to break into the emotional fortress that Pooja had created around her. She had very patiently managed to talk Pooja into seeking psychiatric counseling to deal with her pain. That's why they were here today

Posted in short story.
