Way to go!

Tired of being harassed by a small time local criminal and ignored by the local police, a group of women in Nagpur decided to find justice their own way.
On Thursday, residents of Chandan Nagar attacked Naresh Meshram, a man with several criminal cases against him, with bricks and stones, leaving him severely injured and fighting for his life.
”The women were already angry with him. How long could we tolerate all this? We attacked him. All the women did this collectively. We used sticks, stones, whatever we could get,” said Pushpa Bawne, resident.
”I bowed at his feet and pleaded. He still attacked us. That’s why we got infuriated. Many women decided and came forward, attacked him, with whatever we could lay our hands on. He was injured and wasn’t moving,”added Seema Kale, another resident.
Meshram was seriously injured and admitted to Medical College Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.
But the women’s continuing fear comes from the fact that Meshram is still alive.
”If he survives and comes back, he won’t leave us. He has already warned us not to file a police complaint. If we did, he said he won’t leave us alive. Please don’t let him be alive. Don’t release him. Give him a life sentence or hang him,’’said Seema.
Twenty-five-year-old Meshram has about 27 cases registered against him in the last 10 years, including one case of rape registered in 2003.
He was also served notice for externment eight days ago but defied police orders.
This is the second case of a similar kind in Nagpur. In August 2004 another small-time criminal Akku Yadav was killed in the court by a group of women from Kasturba Nagar.
The women say many households in the locality have been victims of exploitation by Naresh or his gang mates. He would hold people at knife point, enter their houses and do whatever he pleased.
”He uses something folded in paper. He used to say that it gives him a high equal to two drinks of alcohol. He teases us, chases us and even comes to the well when we go to wash clothes,” said Pushpa Bawne.
The residents of Chandan Nagar say that despite several complaints they received no help from the police.
A case has been registered with the local police after Thursday’s incident but no arrests have been made so far.
My Musings: Would love to see more such instances where the culprits are taken to task by the public! No more scenes of hoards of public watching a hoodlum bully helpless men or women. The mumbaikars who have watched a girl being raped on the eve of new year in pulic have got to learn what “self-reliance” and “self-respect” mean from these women!!
