Mantra and Tantra - The Science and Technology of Sound

August 21, 2009 By: Sahiti Bharadwaj Category: Gayatri Mantra

We come across number of higher education institutions named xxxx Institute of Science and Technology. Ever wondered what is the difference between the two? At a gathering of mostly IT people the question was asked and was met with silence. I was among the crowd and frankly, I was not myself very sure :-) Given that I was attending a class on “The Super Science of Gayatri” I couldnt find a relevant answer. The ensuing talk was highly enlightening, atleast for me.
Science has to do with the study, discovery of something new and postulating new theories. Technology has to do with using Science, to develop instruments that use the found scientific principles for our convenience. Mantra is said to be the Science of Sound. Yes, it is a “science” which means it is in itself not directly practically useful. It takes a Mantra - drasta, a seer or a sage who has realized the mantra, a technician who knows how to practically use and apply the words and the sound to get the desired result. Just imagine, no electricity can be produced by just repeating V = IR !! One must study it, understand it and realized the properties of V, I and R and their inter-relations as a first essential step. It is the Science of Electricity. Then comes making the circuits, adjusting the parameters to make a generator or a motor..or whatever. Every where it is the same electricity, in a silicon chip to a huge power-plant.

Similarly “Gayatri” is said to be the underlying current of life in the entire universe. The whole solar system and our earth thive on the energy of the Sun. It is due to the Sun that the plants are rotating in fixed orbits around it. It is due to Sun we have day and night, the seasons, the water cycle, plants making food through photo synthesis. Sun is declared to be the ONLY source of energy by the seers. The Suns energy is called Savithri. Every other form of energy is either directly or indirectly derived from it. But where does Sun which is just one of the zillions of stars get its energy from? It is the principle of Gayatri. As per Advaita each of us or everthing in the world is part of the same Absolute, like the tiny cells on a huge body. The same principle of Gayatri that sustains the Sun and through Sun all of us, is present in each one of us !!

Study of the principles, behaviour and properties of Gayatri is the “Science of Gayatri” The universe or nature is in perfect balance. The whole universe is said to pulsate to a particular rythm. And so do we with our inhalation and exhalation, !! Even Sun pulsates with a cycle of 12 years. Even the galaxies are not exempt! Just imagine the huge galaxies with some assumed galactic center some where, rotating around it. We wouldnt even be a speck of dust!

Gayatri is the science of breath or life. But Science is only restricted to the 5 senses. As per our current definition it cannot even probe into thoughts, death, aging or many other aspects of human existance. While it can say that the initial germ cells in the embryo develop into both somatic and reproductive cells, one cannot probe about the force that guides them. So from the speck of dust’s prespective it would be a Super-Science, a Maha Vignan. :-) After so much of exertion, if we are able to understand, appreciate the properties, postulates of the seers, it is just half the story! The practicals, lab sessions are still there !!! That is the Tantra - the technology. Mantra is the Science and Tantra, the Technology of using it. (Tantra is usually associated with a lot of negative activities, like black magic etc. But it can also be used for equally positive activities, just like the atomic energy. )

The Tantra or practical ways of using Gayatri for postive energy are the Gayatri Jap, Gayatri Yagna. Tantra is something which EVERYONE can use. Everyone can just toggle the switch and get the light. There would be an electrician who would know the circuits in the house to fix minor issues in the practical use. Then there would be an electrical engg who would be working at the generation and transmission stations. There alsowould be a scientist working on the viable alternate sources of electricity. Only the scientist NEEDs to KNOW the TRUE electricity, even before it comes into existances, the cause that created. Even an illiterate can switch on the light and use the blub. He need not know anything about electricity, so to speak. Similarly, theTantra is for the masses, the Jap Anustan and the Yagna. They are practical ways of USING the principle of Gayatri. If someone just reads a book on electricity or repeats V = IR, there would be no current. Similarly, mindlessly repeating the Mantra would not be much useful. When done in a methodical way, with concentration, the Jap and Yagna would give measurable practicle results.

There is a university Dev Sanskruthi Viswa vidyalaya(DSVV) to study and investigate the same which i found encouraging.

PS: Do met me know your views on the subject. Hope to share more on how mantras can be called Science of Sound soon…

Only Science - No religion - Brain waves and Meditation

March 28, 2007 By: Sahiti Bharadwaj Category: Gayatri Mantra

Brain and Brain waves

In scientific terms, our brains elicit four types of electrical brain-wave- frequencies: alpha, beta, theta, and delta. The slowest brain waves are delta (deep sleep). Rapid brain-wave frequencies are beta (rational, detail-oriented thinking). Stress and negative thinking or emotions can appear while the brain is in the beta state. Most adults live and work at the beta-wave frequency or typical working condition. At beta (brain alert and logical) inspiration or creative activity cannot occur.

Next to delta, slow theta waves appear before sleep. They are associated with drowsiness and rapid assimilation of new information. Theta brain-wave frequencies appear in deeply relaxed or daydreaming states. When meditating or practicing yoga people can control their mental states, and manipulate their brain waves producing a memory-triggering creative theta state. Mental phenomena such as hypnagogic imagery, creative thoughts, integrative experiences, and spontaneous memories may be brought with theta state. In theta state, the physical body is deeply relaxed but mind is extremely alert and lucid. Inspiration or insight appears while in theta state of mind.

Alpha frequencies are higher than theta, and less than beta. Alpha produces relaxation. The alpha state occurs when people enter meditative states (theta replaces alpha activity). The meditative state can also be named alpha and theta state. At first mind goes empty, and then the feeling is replaced by creative imagination or day dreaming. Inner healing of the physical body is accelerated in alpha and theta state. And healing by bio-energy can be done while the healer and healee appear to be in this state.

Alpha and theta state brings harmonious balance between left hemisphere activity (rational thinking), and right hemisphere activity of the brain (creativity) and a balanced state of whole-brain integration while physical body is deeply relaxed. This is extremely beneficial to reach a higher level of mental powers and reorientation toward life. In this state the mind works at high intellectual levels, and it is accompanied with creativity, euphoria, intuition, and feeling of being oneness with the universe.

Brain waves and Meditation

What, specifically, do the terms beta, alpha, theta, and delta mean for the contemporary meditator? What type of changes actually occur in brain-wave frequencies as one progressively experiences a more holistic awareness? Current technology, including the one-of-a-kind “Brain Monitor” developed by Synchronicity Foundation’s research team, enables us to answer these questions with precision.

Alpha brain waves

When brain wave activity is focused primarily within the 8-13 Hz. (cycles per second) range, one experiences what is termed an “alpha” state of awareness. Alpha brain-waves are produced in most people when they concentrate or focus the mind, or relax by sitting or reclining with their eyes closed. Alpha brain-waves are very often produced in bursts (trains of waves) or pulses (single waves), but some people, and especially Synchronicity Contemporary meditators, tend to produce continuous trains of alpha waves. When your brain is producing alpha frequencies, you experience a pleasant, comfortable, mildly relaxed yet wakeful state of awareness. This experience represents a relatively stress-free and euphoric state of being. The general understanding is that the more that alpha is produced in ordinary states of awareness, the easier it is to access deeper meditative states.
Practically speaking, individuals such as artists or photographers, who more often than usual, use the visual and spatial abilities characteristic of the right-brain, seem to produce alpha more easily than linear, left-brain thinkers. In the same way, experienced Synchronicity Contemporary meditators, who have repetitively patterned and become familiar with alpha brain-wave production, can more easily produce alpha frequencies.

In fact, by looking at an individual’s alpha brain-wave production, it is possible to determine not only whether the person is a meditator, but also the length of time the individual has been practicing meditation. Beginning meditators tend to produce alpha in the 10 to12 Hz. range. As meditative experience deepens, so does the dominant frequency at which alpha is produced. Therefore, we find that meditators with ten plus years of experience consistently produce low frequency alpha in the region of 7 to 9 Hz.

Theta brain waves

Theta brain-waves are produced in the frequency range from 3.5-7 Hz., which are more decelerated brain waves than alpha. Like alpha, theta is characterized by a blissful sense of well-being. However, in theta, the experience of holistic awareness increases. Theta represents the synchronized state of awareness in which creativity and imagery predominate. Experienced meditators are accustomed to a wide variety of “inner” images and visions, and these images do indeed seem to correlate with increased theta activity.

Delta brain waves

Delta brain waves are traditionally associated with deep sleep and are the slowest of the brain waves, occurring from 0-3.5 Hertz. Usually, only the most advanced meditators can remain wakeful while producing delta brain waves. The experiences typical of subtle dimensional actualization occur in the deepest levels of the delta brain-wave frequencies.

The Scientific Religion

Gayatri Maha Vigyan- 2

We only know rishis names, we don't know their laws. Newton is not important, it is Newton's laws that are important. E=mc2 is important. What is Einstein without that? In Indian spirituality only rishi's are remembered. Each of us know our gothra and the gothra rishi. We are their descendents but we do not know what they have told. We do not know that they have spent all their life discovering. Rishis were the scientists of Nature. They studied, experimented, analysed and formed laws. Do we know that?

Scientists say all matter has atoms. Atoms have nucleus, electrons and protons. They are electrical in nature (+ve protons and 've electrons) Do we know that according to rishis atom is not fundamental, but sound is???

There are 92 types of atom and hence 92 types of atomic energy. The 56 Alphabets are the 56 atoms of sound. Mantra shaastra is a science that tells about using the energy of sound. Shaastra = shwaasa+ astra, which means using breath as a weapon. When the sound and the breath are tuned, you can set out a sound bomb(concentrated form of energy) as you can set out a atomic reaction by controlling certain parameters. When you know how to utter correctly, each word can become energy, a bomb. But a bomb needs to be unpinned for the energy to be used. Here the pin is the breath! Sound synchronized with breath is a bomb, energy, mantra siddi! So whatever the rishi's utter has to happen. They can give boons, banes, whatever the other deserved. But to attain this energy u have to purify urself first. U have to purigy ur breath and ur body, you mind and your heart.

Such energy can be dangerous in misplaced hands. Hence our rishis have encypted them in symbolism. For example why does Gayatri sit on a swan and has 5 faces? Why is she a young and beautiful lady? It is all symobolism.

We have to undertand that symbolism first. When you breathe out correctly, you make a sound "ham" and a sound "sa" when you breathe in(Note 1). when you breath in and out, what does it become ? IT becomes a "ham-sa" !! Gayatri is the life energy that is entering you through your breath! You have to know that it is not the air that is Gayatri. Air goes in and comes out and the "life energy" is accepted by the body for sustenance. Air is just like a capsule. You cant take a medicine without capsule. In the same way, like medicine in capsule, Gayatri(Life energy) is entering you through breath, through "ham-sa". Hence Gayatri is Hamsa vaahini, the rider of Hamsa!

In our lungs there are 5 lobes, 3 on the left and 2 on the right. These 5 lobes or the 5 koshas are the five faces of Gayatri. The 10 hands are the 10 good deeds that the Gayatri sadhaka has to do. (will eloborate more on this later)Gayatri or Life is a creative energy, which only women have. Only women can give birth. Hence Gayatri(Life energy) is depicted as a "women". Practicing Gayatri will make you young/lively. Hence she is young. This is how our deities are derived though symbolism.

Even the mantra! Each letter of the mantra has a specific meaning and is packed with energy. We need not be a doctor/scientist to use medicine. Scientists spend decades to find a medicine. Doctor understands what the medicine is and how it works. But anyone can take a medicine that doctors prescribe and get the result, without knowing how it works. You may not know how it works, but it still does!!!!! They are not talismans! Mantras are like that medicine. You may not know HOW they work. But they have a science and reason behind them and they are not talismans. It is just that you don't know how they work. The rishis have just prescribed, if you want health read Aditya hrudayam. If u want wealth read kanakadhaara stavam (When adi shankara recited this, they say that there was shower of golden amla fruits!) so on and so fourth. You recite it and you get the result manifested in your life! Mantras have science to back them. It was forgotten courtesy the medival periods of spiritual darkness and subjugation. We were told that mantras were magic and if they work it is a miracle!!! No! You take medicine and you are disease free, it is not a miracle. It is expected and predictable out come. First we need to understand this.

Note 1. Some schools of thought say breath in “so” and breath out ” ham” So it becomes “Soham”. So-ham or ham-sa it is the same. Both are ok. It is like e=mc2 or mc2 =e, both are correct !!!

Note 2: Srirama sharma aachara has established brahma varchas research institute to reaseach and re-discover such scientific facts on which the Yagnas and mantras are based on. There are high profile doctors scientists and foreigners working there

Gayatri Maha Vigyan, The Super Science of Gayatri - 1

March 23, 2007 By: Sahiti Bharadwaj Category: Gayatri Mantra

Gayatri is a kind of formula for using the energy of sun for the sustenance of life. This formula should be understood and used practically to overcome disease, old age and death. That is the purpose of the energy generated by Gayatri.

Gayatri is to life what the Ohms law (V=IR) is to electricity. Electricity is used everywhere. Every single modern invention owes it to electricity, be it computers, telephony or whatever. Electricity is energy, but it has to be manifested through some practical application to be useful. Other wise it is just there useless! Do you say that there was no electricity in Nature before it was discovered by Man? It is the same with Gayatri. It is a form of energy waiting to be applied, waiting to be useful to man-kind. Gayatri is not a lady, mind you! It is all pervading life energy!

Repeating blindly the Gayatri mantra is of as much use as repeating ohms law to generate electricity! You have to know the practical applicability of the Gayatri mantra and use it. Learn the formula and apply in life. You have to discover new areas where and how Gayatri can be used once the concept is learnt. Otherwise it is like a doctor becoming an actor. You learnt it and you know it but you don't apply it! It is of no use to anybody.

Once Gaytri is learnt, there should be a change in the way of thinking and way of life. Change in the thinking process is the proof that you have really learnt it. An engineer, a doctor, a businessman, each has an underlying way of thinking! The person's thinking before studying MBBS and after does not remain the same. It transforms. A new perspective/under current is added. That stream of thought remains in the background whatever day-to-day activity they may be performing.

Studying Gayatri also should bring about such change in student. Studying medicine makes one a doctor, physics makes one physicist and chemistry makes one chemist. Similarly, studying gayatri should make you ? A more complete human being, who has won over disease, old-age and death! That is the aim of Gayatri and proof that you have learnt it.

By disease, it is not just physical malfunction, it is dis-ease! Any kind of dis-comfort in daily life should be removed. This can be done by following "tat savituh varenyam" which can be translated as "I emulate the sun". Quality of the sun changes every month. Sun has a daily cycle, monthly cycle as well as a yearly cycle. We all know this. It also has 11/22 year cycle, which is out of scope now. The yearly cycle begins when sun enters mesha rasi at Yugadi. Hindu Yugadi is no ordinary new year. It has greater significance than that. Hence it is called Yug+aadi and not samvasthara+aadi. It is called beginning of an "era" and not a "year".

Now let us understand what this "era"is. When a great personality like Akbar or Gandhi dies, it is called end of an era. Which means, an end of a way of life/thinking. Era means a specific and special way of thinking that remains as an undercurrent irrespective of what we do. Gandhi's was an era of non-voilence, Akbar's was an era of religious tolerance. That's an era. So how do we change it every year? Simple, it needs to be changed in the same way as a student's thought process changes from a class to class every year. A student in 4th class will not have the same way of thinking he had in 3rd class. Which means his "way of thinking changed", which means his "era" changed. An undercurrent for the doctor's way of thinking is "curing disease or cause of disease". We see doctors talk about it every where, at home/movie theaters/hotels, everywhere. The undercurrent of a business man is "profit". The undercurrent of an engineer is "logic of manipulation of material". Civil engineer manipulates sand, Electronics engineer manipulates silicon. So these are the undercurrents of thought that you have developed over a period of time through rigorous education and by gradual changing of "way of thinking" year after year! But when it comes to Gayatri, you want miracles overnight! You do it for a month and say "I did it, but it doesn't work!"

Imagine a village full of illiterates. One of the boys goes to town, studies and comes back. The illiterate villagers ask him where he has been all these years. The poor chap explains that he has studied and has graduated and lists the virtues of being educated. But the ignorant villagers say "How do we trust you? You look the same as any uneducated boy in the village. We don't "see" any "value" added! We think you are a fool and where duped!" Our general response to the study of our ancient wisdom is the same! We don't know its value and consider the one pursuing it a fool! A deranged person who has confused priorities.

Test it to believe it!

Dear ilanders, am honestly smitten by this Gayatri Mantra and Pandit sriram sharma acharya after reading the book "The Super Science of Gayatri. He seems to be knowledgeable, logical, global and scientific in his approach. Hence 3 posts on same topic on a single day! He dares us to experiment and see the results and I decided to do just the same! :-) As Nature would have it, I came to know that one of the direct disciples of sriram sharma acharya is in Bangalore and is delivering lectures/taking classes on this "vidya". If we can take a weekly course in Java/.Net and later with a book practice it patiently to master it, why not Gayatri Mantra?! So I am gonna give it a shot! Those of you who are inquisitive about the same can mail me at sahiti.bharadwaj@gmail.com. Am not giving the details right away bcos this is not an advertisement for anything! Neither for Gayatri mantra nor for sriram sharma acharya !  So the information is shared on you-want-it, you-have-it basis.

The Science of Sound and Mantra

March 21, 2007 By: Sahiti Bharadwaj Category: Gayatri Mantra

Singing of Deepak-rag lights up extinguished lamps. It starts raining when megh-malhar tune is sung. The warbling of cuckoo incites passion. Even strong iron bridges may collapse by the sound created by the in-step, coordinated and rhythmic marching of a troop soldiers. Dr. Hutchinson of America has achieved success and fame in curing several patients suffering from incurable and painful diseases by different musical sounds. The vibrations of a specific sound spread in the ether and attract atoms of similar type and return to their origin within few moments, duly charged with appropriate energy which exercises curative impact in the appropriate area. This is how Mantras accomplish miraculous effects.

The masters of Mantra-Vidya know that words are uttered by different parts of the mouth such as, throat (larynx), tongue, teeth, lips and the root of the tongue. During speech, the nerve-fibres of the particular parts of the mouth from which sound emits stretch up to different parts of the body and put pressure on the corresponding glands. If particular glands of the person concerned are diseased or dysfunctional he starts stammering while uttering the specific words. There are many large and small, visible and invisible glands in the body. Yogis know that some specific energies lie hidden in these glands, Shat-
Chakras (six energy centre) related to the Sushumana are quite well known but there are several other such glands in the body. The utterance of different words has its impact on different glands and by such impact the energy of these glands gets stimulated. Mantras have been composed on this basis.

Gayatri Mantra

Every religion has a pre-eminent Mantra like Kalma in Islam, 'Baptism' in Christianity, Namonkar in Jainism, Om Mani Padme Huye in Tibetan Buddhism. So also in Bhartiya Dharma there is one preeminent Mantra. It is Gayatri Mantra.

No sooner the key of a type-writer is pressed there is a stroke on the paper and the concerned letter is typed on it. Similarly, the twenty-four letters in Gayatri-Mantra which are related to twenty-four such glands located in the body which, on getting stimulated, activate and awaken the powers of righteous wisdom. The letters of Gayatri Mantra are arranged in such a way that by their utterance specific sound waves is created and specific qualities in respect of gun (virtues), karma (action) and swabhav (nature) start developing. A Sadhak gains spiritually as well as materially by this Sadhana.

Chanted with sincere devotion, they plug the sadhak's soul into the supreme and inexhaustible fount of spiritual energy.

A Goddess with 5 mouths and 10 arms giving boons? NO!!!

One should not be under the illusion that Gayatri is an individual entity with one mouth and two arms or five mouths and ten arms. Woman has been given eminence and superiority over man and hence Gayatri has been visualised in Mother's form.
Kamandal and a book in Gayatri Mata's hands are symbolic of knowledge and science respectively. There is no living being in the world having five mouths and ten arms. This is just symbolic. Five mouths signify Panch-koshas and ten arms represent ten characteristic features of Dharma.

Most of the people think that some god or goddess is bestowing these gifts because they are unable to see and understand the working of these subtle divine energies and the transformations flowing there from. Once they understand that transformations are taking place as a result of their own Sadhana they would realise that it is not by way of some unexpected gift from somewhere but is the result of a well organized scientific process of spiritual growth. Gayatri Sadhana is not based on blind faith but has a solid scientific basis.

Popular Myths about Gayatri busted!

March 21, 2007 By: Sahiti Bharadwaj Category: Gayatri Mantra

It is also a blind belief promoted by retrogressive minds that Gayatri Sadhana is forbidden by shastras for women and low caste people (shoodra). All the children of God have equal rights to his gifts. Everybody uses the light of Sun and moon; air, water, river, tank, food etc. No particular caste can claim to have exclusive right in respect of any of them. God belongs to all, is all, and so His power, Gayatri, also belongs to all and is in all.

Mistakes in Sadhana punished by Goddess?

If any mistake is committed in the rituals of Tantrik Sadhana its deities, who are mostly demonic, may get infuriated and harm the Sadhak; but Gayatri is like an affectionate mother full of forgiveness and compassion. She loves all her children who cannot even speak properly.

Even simple rustic type of worship having noble motives and sincerity becomes fruitful, if it is done with heartful aspiration. It is said about Valmeeki that he could not even utter Ram's name correctly and started uttering "mara, mara" and became the first amongst the ancient seers (Adi-kavi). In rightist way of Sadhana, quality of feelings is more important than mere rituals. None has been harmed on account of any omission in the method of Gayatri worship. Still, if there is any apprehension, the guidance of a spiritually awakened personage can be sought in the matter.

Pre-requisite to start Gayatri?

It is prescribed that Gayatri is a sacred Mantra and those who worship it should live with cleanliness. They should put on yagyopaveet and should not take liquor, meat etc. It is good not to indulge in intoxication. It is good to remain pure as far as possible. This, however, does not mean that no medicines should be given to a person living in unhealthy conditions. It is the specialty of Gayatri Mantra that by its worship, defects and vices of a man start getting rectified. A person of any position or level of self-growth (even the lowest and lost ones) can perform Sadhana of Gayatri Mantra without any restriction, whatsoever. His vices and defects will gradually go on getting rectified. The argument that a person should not adopt Gayatri Sadhana so long as his food, daily routine, habits etc. are defective is untenable. It is like refusing to give medicine to a patient.

When a righteous, dutiful person of whichever class caste, sect or gender seriously takes up Sadhana, he gets more advantage, just as a cleanly washed cloth gets nicely coloured. Otherwise, there is no ban to do Sadhana on a man who has vices. His evil tendencies will be eliminated as he progresses in Sadhana.

Idol worship

Those who believe that God is formless, pose a question why an idol or a picture should be installed to worship? Such people should know that important part of worship is meditation and contemplation and name and form are very helpful for meditation. All the paths of Sadhana and all religions have there own symbols in order to refine their sentiments. Every nation has its own national flag. Its citizens pay due regard to the national flag and get infuriated when it is defiled. Even communists who are known to be atheists offer salutation to the red flag and when they go to USSR they pay a visit to Leningrad to have a glimpse of the place where Lenin's body has been preserved. Muslims, who do not believe in idol worship offer prayers facing Kaba. They kiss the symbolic stone 'Sange Asavad' of Syah Moosa in Mecca. Arya Samajists express divine faith in the letter 'Om' and in performing agnihotra. The reason obviously is that it is convenient to concentrate the mind with the help of symbols. The work of teaching the alphabet to children becomes easy when it is done in a symbolic manner, just as ka- kabutar, kha- khargosh, ga-gadha, gha-ghadi, and so on. The same principle applies to installation of idols.

Err/Sin and later do Jap to get forgiveness, a working model??

It has been stated that Gayatri dispels the darkness of sin. It does not mean elimination of the results of sin. It means getting rid of sinful tendencies.
