A story with a twist

please tell me something different story” said little sanidhya to me! Oh God, u have already listened two stories and now again? i was little annoyed. It is already half past nine and you should go to bed now! I said forcibly and he gave me a hug and said one more please.

He is a really cheeky one, always want to listen to the stroies and want to add something from his own side. Now which one, I started thinking of all my childhood story books and i remembered one which is short , sweet and simple which will complete easily and he will left with no editing to do with and finally he will sleep peacefully. Thinking this I started.

Once upon a time, in the jungle there lived a tortoise and a rabbit. One day they decided to race. I wanted to be as simple and precise I can be. “Then what happen? Who said, ONE TWO THREE ……….GO” he asked so innocently. He always asked such questions when he isn’t feeling very sleepy and I left with no option than to answer him.

Elephant was there to  monitor there race , whats was the name of the elephant? Oh God ! I dont know , Mr Elephant….OK. Yeah!  So Mr Elephant asked Master Tortoise and Master Rabbit to start racing .

Did he said ONE TWO THREE…. Yes yes he did said like that. And then finally the race begins and obviously Master rabbit was winning. WHY? He asked with full energy. Because rabbits are good in running and tortoise are slow animals. But thats not fair, said he. It seems all his sympathy is with Tortoise. Anyways, Rabbit reached, No it is Master Rabbit! OH DEAR, Yes I forgot, it is Master Rabbit who reached half the way and thought ” I am sure to win so why not to take a little nap and then I will complete the race. But “thats not in the rules of Racing” He is not allowed to sleep on the way. Thats wrong” ! Come on thats just a story and anything is possible in a story, I said in  a convincing way. He seems to be convinced a bit and then he said Did Tortoise won the race?

Well, Master Rabbit kept on sleeping and Tortoise slowly and gradually won the race and when Rabbit woke up, he realised his mistake. So the lesson of the story is “Slow and Steady wins the race”.

I dont like this story! said sanidhya. Why ? Now whats the problem. Master Rabbit should not have slept on his way and ……. But Sanidhya, then Tortoise might have lost the game and he was the obvious weak player so the Story has been made to make the Tortoise winner. No ……… I dont agree he said with confidence and by the time I was confident that he will add something on his own.

Mumma, does Tortoise was not having his SKATES! He would have won the race beside being slow and then there would not have been any reason for Master Rabbit for taking a nap. Now all his sympathy was with Rabbit and his version was very clear and innocent that Tortoise even could win the race if he would have wearing his Skates! That was made me speechless and I said that just like you Master Tortoise has yet not started taking Skating lessons! He was convinced this time and now sleeping peacefully and must be in the dreamland where he will give Master Tortoise a pair of skates to win the  race.

This story telling session with him has forced me to think that why we always think of the reasons for our failures when nobody but only we are responsible for all our doings, whether good or bad! And why do we think that we are not good enough for doing this or that when we know that a little effort or a little gesture with intelligence  is enough for us to go on a winning path. Many a times we learn many things from kids just like this. A twist in the story where Tortoise is wearing skates to compete with Rabbit and Rabbit lost the game without sleeping in between. That was good! Good enough for us to understand life better! What do you think? Do let me know!

You have an amazingly creative, imaginative and inquisitive child. Thankfully the child’’s brain is not set into the stereotype that we have drowned ourselves in. You must be encouraging him to come up with more creative endings for our regular stories so that we can also enjoy them and also increasing his powers of imagination!

It is always better to understand the moral behind the story and learn from it. One need not land into confusions by thinking or worrying more than required. Good realistic story. Keep writing.

Because in India people think more of their RIGHTS first than think about their DUTIES.

  9. Nishant Dixit says

your thought is nice but it does not match the story as we all know that the story taught us not to be over confident or go slow n steady so I think we should let it be like that only. but yes if little Sanidhya had tried to give a twist to the story that shows his creative mind. He has his own perception to see things differently which is really good. he has basics you just have to develop it in correct direction and he could able to twist the world.

According to me story should go like this:

Part 1: Tortoise - Rabit had race and Rabbit obviously been a good runner won the race.

Part 2: Tortoise challenged the Rabit again for another race but this time swimming competetion. Tortoise won in swimming been a good swimmer.

Moral of the Story: Know your competency and act accordingly.

    Your Thoughts?

Hi Sanidhya! How true it is that children are the true reflection of God as mankind.
Well, what your son reflected to you is so obviuos and yet so difficult for all groen up, well educated and mature experienced people like us. Is it because of our own false Self EGO? ….I wonder sometimes….!

    Good Luck.

    Hi,

    Nice one

But the moral on the old story is to be Consistent & not to underestimate the opponent
    - The Rabbit underestimated the opponent, rabbit was overconfident & was not consistent in using its capabilities
    - The Tortoise was consistent in its capabilities & gave it a shot with confidence & the tortoise deserved the win
Use of capabilities at consistent with individual pace will fetch the desired goal

    Cheers
    Keep Writing would love read

hmn…i dont think giving skates to tortoise makes a level playing field….the originator of the story ( old version ) chose rabbit and tortoise cos. he wanted to show “Fast” and “Slow”….if we see the outcome of the story in practical way…..that rabbit does”nt take nap on the way and he wins the race……the message is clear “FAST AND CONSISTENT WINS THE RACE”…..and thats what practically happens everywhere.

  21. Sunrise Marketing Services says

Obviously, the child was seeking a level playing field with respect to both the contestants.
The blog validates the ”child is the father of man” proverb.
Furthermore, we can safely conclude that we humans are evolving greatly at a psychological level.

  25. eureka mind says

one more twist … to make Master Rabbit and Master Turtoise at par.. provide them little bycycles… instead of normal race make it a bycycle race… (yeah! a little bit of training in required…. that training can be provided by Master Chimpangee … isn”t it?)

  26. Dilip says

really really it is good story.

Nitu…Nice story…kahani me twist achcha laga…kabhi kabhi bachchon ke massom dimagh me is tarha ki cheezen aa jati hain kyunki woh kisi bhi kahani se is tarha jur jate hain jaise woh us kahani ka ek patra hon ..lekin whin unki seedhi sachchi soch hamen ek lesson bhi de jati hai ke agar hamare samne raaste band hon to pareshan hone ki jagha apni soch ko thora twist delen to shayad hum kisi bhi tarha apni manzil ke qareeb pahunch sakte hain jab ke hum lage bandhe raaston par chlne ke aadi ho chuke hain aur raasta badalna jante hi nahi…nice one…all the best

  32. Think Tank says

Wonderful! Sanidhya seems to be smarter than me! But I can compete with him in asking questions :) Loved this, but felt a bit guilty if you ”had to” write this story for us while you could have spent the time with your family :) Do write and keep visiting only in your free time… I will take care too… About this story, what Sanidhya thought was out-of-the-box. And yes, we win or lose only because of us, not because of others. But seeing life as a ”race” makes us compare us with others and hence the problem. What was the need for the rabbit, opps Master Rabbit and Master Tortoise to race? Why was it necessary to determine who was to win and who to lose? … Very nice story and you shared some very good thoughts… Thanks a lot… Regards, (Rahul)
