From termite to mummy

The exterminators looking for termites in a monastery in Brazil's biggest city of Sao Paulo found a mummy and a skeleton believed to be at least 200 years old.  A mound of termite dust was there.  Armenio Rodriguez Noguiera was in charge of monastery thinks that it is a huge surprise! 

 

The bodies are thought to be of 2 nuns.  The bodies were found weeks ago but the monastery members decided to keep it as a secret.  Institute and National Artistic and Historical Heritage did further research.  The Catholic monastery was found in 1774 by Brazil's first saint, Antonio Galvao.  This was built about 50 years before the nation's independence.  The country was colonized by Portugal.

Alien smile ..this is something nice to share.  When you will go to Hamshire Aquarium you will be greeted with an "alien-like smile."  The semi-transparent thorn back ray is only a month old.  It is just 12 cm in length.  It is one of a dozen hatched from egg-cases known as mermaid's purses.  He is currently being looked after a spec

 

Parental bond

Scientists have found that the parental bond is all in the mind.  Research shows a region of the brain key to an instinctive desire to care for and nurture infants.  The research tells us why we view babies as special.  This could help doctors diagnose postnatal depression.  The research is being done at University of Oxford.  It has been published in the journal PLoS One.

 

The scientists are trying to find out the reason why we look after our kids in general to make sure our survival of the species.  So this goes back to Darwin.  A region of the brain called the medial orbitofrontal cortex responds to faces of infants and not to adults.  So whenever we are excited about seeing a child, it is the medial orbitofrontal cortex that is responding!  This area is located just above the eyeballs and it is responsible for identifying faces.  It controls emotions.  They used imaging scans to measure brain activity.  They did an experiment with volunteers.  They asked them to hit the button when a cross in the screen changed its color.  In between the faces of unfamiliar infant and adult faces flashed on the screen. 

 

Observation:  No reaction was seen to adult faces but the infant faces spurred a high level of activity within a second.  This instinctive signal tells us that babies are special.

 

Silent Approval

Sometimes you have to do something following the words of your parents.  Your parents are your best friends.  There is something in life that needs to be obeyed.  Say you are told by your parents to leave your M.Sc. mid way as it happened in my case.  I had to leave M.Sc. in anthropology at University of Calcutta.  I told my father many times that I have spent so much time studying the subject.  I loved the subject.  I love to study human culture.  But he advised me not to pursue further as we all know that scholarly studies, unless you are determined enough to score high marks in exam, you are no where in this competitive world!  So following my father's words, I left anthropology totally,,,,,,, and joined medical transcription field.  I started my training at Infovision Software Private Limited.  My training went smoothly.  I failed to qualify the first time, so I had to sit for another trial of seven days after another month.  This is also something I had to silently bear as it is an employer's market!  I joined the company and worked this company for more than 2 years!!  This is a good company and my colleagues are very friendly.  The supervisors have good sense of humor. 

 

I had a lot of interest learning French.   I started learning French between my end of Higher Secondary exam and the beginning of graduation, though the course overlapped with my B. Sc. Hons. Anthropology also.  My father who is an avid French learner and he was an alumni of Alliance Francaise de Calcutta, which was previously at Park Mansion at Park Street.  He used to tell me about the French teachers at his time.  He used to tell me how this Park Mansion burnt and the building was shifted to Beckbagan.  I used to go to Beckbagan.  I studied there for 8 months and gave 4 exams.  One exam every 2 months.  It was a wonderful experience.  The classes are stimulating.  The girls beautiful from rich families.  There faces are cute.  Their voices hot and spicy!! In one word, " yummy experience!!"  The teachers were Triranjan Chakraborty, Alokananda Banerjee, Kaushik Chatterjee.  This man, Kaushik Chatterjee was a little bit senior to my father ..both my father and he passionate about French, only thing is that my father had to leave French because of job and Kaushik sir continued French and went to France for his training and came to Alliance to teach.  So my father also silently left French so that he can pursue something fruitful.  I had to leave French language.  I was told by my father about the bleak future of French.  He told me, "What will you get studying French?"  He advised me to pursue the graduation well and in my later life, I went to a professional course and now I have established myself as a medical transcriptionist.

 

Silent approval worked when I was first rejected by the girl whom I proposed in class 2!  You will be surprised to hear I used to look at the girl, in fact, stare at the girl, she was cute girl!  She is slim and beautiful!  I don't know what he does.  Anyway, I had to silently bear the rejection from her side!  I never talked with a girl later in my time till I reached class X.  I studied in Cossipore English School at Dum Dum Seven Tanks where I never used to look at any girl!  I was so depressed to tell you frankly!  Anyway, that was another case of silent approval.

 

I studied music at Sourav in Lansdowne Road (Sarat Bose Road in Kolkata).  I studied there for 4 months.  I studied synthesizer under the guidance of the respected V. Balsara, an established musician who recently passed away!  I was admitted to his school when he asked me to play and I played the famous Rabindra Sangeet (Tagore Song) "Alo Amar Alo."  I played nicely in his cottage piano which was kept in the well kept room of that respected school of music.  I had to approve and learn the lessons from the assistant where the name of the famous person is shown to attract students to learn from the "obedient student of that stalwart."  After some time, I could not bear such "cool learning," so I left Sourav and went to my previous teacher, "Tarak Roy."  He was a nice teacher and I learnt harmonica and also learnt synthesizer in a better way.

 

Silent approval can be given as a consent signal from a woman too.  For example, you are talking with a girl for quite some time.  She will gradually become friendly.  She will wave at you when you are sitting in office.  Her smile is a silent approval.  Her sweet intonation in voice is an approval.  Her mood always remains good when she sees you.  The only thing that obstructs if when the girl has another boy whom she loves dearly!  You may try to remove the boy like a thorn stuck in your body.  You may remove it by hook or crook.  A girl's dress is a silent approval.  Say you have become friendly with a girl, you started touching her and she is also feeling good from the warmth of your touch.  Touching and the way you touch has a great effect on human mind.  It can do wonders in a relationship.  After all it is a silent approval of human bondage!  Think of monkeys and apes who groom each other.  Grooming is touching bodies and that is a social bondage, a communication medium. 

 

 

 

Just look at the sky!!!!!!!!!!

Whenever you get some time, just look at the sky!  I know it is impossible to find time in life to look at the sky, to appreciate nature.  It is important to roam in parks and places far off from the city for sometime because you need some fresh oxygen and you need to  live life at its full!  You should enjoy life besides working hard for money.  Money will help you live a better life but what is life if you do not look at the sky if you do not have time to watch the beautiful night sky with brightly lit stars.  The stars seem like holes in the jet black roof of a huge dome.  This dome has no end!!! As far as the eye goes, you look and you find the bright dots in the sky twinkle and the famous childhood poem comes in your mind:

 

Twinkle twinkle little star

How I wonder what you are!

Up above the world so high

Like a diamond in the sky!

 

 

Besides the stars, you see the silver plate shining in the sky.  The silver plate may look a bit hazy some day and bright some other day..It looks hazy when the sky is cloudy and bright when the sky is clear!! A sky filled with twinkling stars and moon makes your world above enigmatic, fantastic, magical, and I feel excited to watch and feel ..

How tiny I am in this vast universe!

Just a tiny speck ..

We fight and scream and struggle for power

For hour after hour

But this struggle seems to be in vain

With the blood becoming cold in our vein!

 

In my childhood, I used to watch the sky with the mouth wide open!  Now I watch nature with knowledge and search the reference books to know more about mother nature, I try to understand the past and the future of this earth.  As a student of anthropology, I was always fascinated by the intricacies of human evolution.  I was amazed by the early development of human culture.  I am fascinated by Egyptian civilization.  Sometimes I wonder how did the ancient Egyptians created such beautiful mummies from those big stones with just using simple levers. 

 

Human brain is wonderful! Amazing!  Extraordinary!! Some people use brain to its upper limit! Some just eat, drink and be merry and pass their life gossiping and doing nothing living as parasites!  Even a lot of persuation cannot change these sponges into normal people who can earn bread and butter as it is in their genes to be parasites.  This parasitism is seen in old people and even in young generation, not all, a particular group who thinks that life is easy but actually it is not so! 

 

I did go to gym for 5 years!  I am now doing yoga, skipping, jogging and some machines I bought and that is my fitness routine!  After this leaving the gym, I feel that my quality of work improved and I now feel happy that I have obeyed my father who always told that "Leave gym! You will be better in terms of thinking, this overwork is not good for you it does not match your job profile its good for film stars!"  Now I realize that he was right! 

 

Oh! Ya! I was looking at the sky.  I  recently went to Birla Planetarium and was quite fascinated by the stars.  I know a person who may be paralyzed but the man sitting the wheel chair who wrote a book called "Brief History of Time" became an international best seller.  The book inspires me to look at the sky.  The person who inspired me is Professor Stephen Hawking!  It is quite shocking to realize that such a paralyzed person can use artificial intelligence and show his marvelous brain power in this world.  So, if he can do great things, why can't we with normal brain and 2 hands and 2 legs?  I know it is a matter of high IQ (intelligence quotient).  But we can all stretch our capabilities.

 

About human relationships

I had the habit of going to school every day.  I made a lot of friends.  At St. Thomas' Church School, I had friends like Sumit Paul who was good at drawing.  Indrajeet Singh is the topper of our class.  Sankhajeet Chatterjee was also a topper.  Sankhajeet and Indrajeet both left the school because each one of them felt sad when the other became first in the class.  Rivalry from school life was so intense that those who studied in school teacher's private tuition class, they are not ready to mix with others those who do not.  Rat race starts in school till a human being's last breath!  This is what I realized!  "And human relationship..its all need based!!"  This is what I found from my early days!!

 

I first fell in love early ..in fact quite early while I was in school.  I studied in St. Thomas Church School at Howrah Maidan.  I was admitted into this school with an entrance test and studied from class 2 to 8.  Before this school, I used to study in Cossipore English School at Dumdum Seven Tanks.  I studied in this school which has a beautiful church and 2 big play grounds, and beside this school there was a swimming pool.  Actually what I was telling about my first love!  I fell in love with a girl who is slim and fair complexioned.  I used to look at rather.  Actually I used to "stare" at her.  She was so beautiful!!  But unfortunately when I proposed her, she declined.  I felt sad!  I left this school when I was in class 8.  I joined my Cossipore English School.  In this school, I studied in 9 and 10. 

 

 

Parents used to guard the child who fared well in our class so that he might not reveal the top secret of scoring marks!!  They used to have friendship with those who fared well.  "Man is a social animal."  This is what I have studied in my anthropology.  In graduation, I studied anthropology but unfortunately, the fact is:::::Man===== The Most Unsocial Animal!  Without need, very few people is going to waste his/her time!!

 

As I grew up and went to join Cossipore English School, I found my friends who are of the following categories:

  1. Friendly.
  2. Very friendly.
  3. Opportunistic.
  4. Extremely opportunistic.
  5. Dumb.

 

It is unusual to categorize some people as dumb because they even have no need to talk even if they have need!!  They seem to live in an island!

 

In my class at Cossipore English school, we have unusually 5 guys whose name is "Sourav."  It seems that the parents being hardly imaginative find this name quite simple and first to imagine or remember!!  In fact, my father, which my father kept, is quite uncommon.  Though, now by searching the net, I find that this name is used but not so common as Tom, Peter, or Harry!  A friend called Saurav used to do well in class.  Now he is doing drama and also studying Commerce.  He is a guy who is social but when I visited his house, he chatted but he never came into my house!  All life is "purpose oriented."  Without any reason, people are not going to talk!  In fact, I have seen my father who is good and an exception.  My mother socializes a lot!  She has friends at AIWC.  She has friends in our neighborhood.  She keeps in touch with people with and without reason.

 

You know why I say : "Parents—Your Best Friend!"  Because friends may come and go but parents are something whose love will fulfill your life.!  You will feel happy when after returning from your work, your mother gives you the food and the smile.  The warmth of this smile is such that it dispels tiredness.

 

The Professions I Admire

Though I work as a medical transcriptionist for more than 2 years, I would love to be an archeologist, anthropologist, historian, explorer, geologist, tourist guide, body builder, writer, market surveyor, disk jockey, administrative job in hospital etc.  I had studied anthropology and loved the subject.  I studied in my higher secondary (class 11 and 12).  I studied this subject in Narasinha Dutt College.  This college is in Howrah, West Bengal.  You don't know how lucky I am, just after passing out Higher Secondary, this higher secondary teaching was stopped.  Now no one can study higher secondary anthropology.  I got interested and proceed with this subject in my graduation.  Only graduation and pass course are now taught in this N.D. College.  This college is memorable for another thing as my father is a lecturer in this college.  I attended his classes when I was in college.  My father teaches English Literature.  He used to teach the History of English to us and he is a good teacher as me, myself attended the classes.

 

I studied anthropology as Hons in graduation.  Bangabasi College in Sealdah, Kolkata is an old college where anthropology was first started in India.  As per history, then anthropology was talked in Narasinha Dutt College, Habra Sri Chaitanya College and elsewhere.  I studied this subject.  We used to measure the human fossils, and I used to love this studies and we went to Maharashtra, a village 7 km away from Nagpur to study the Kolam tribe.  We studied the Kolam tribe and I felt great while taking photographs of the village. 

 

The professions I would like to be engaged if I were not a medical transcriptionist are as follows:

 

ARCHAEOLOGIST:  I loved this subject while I was studying anthropology.  I used to love prehistory, Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, and in my school life, I stored 99/100 in class V.  I felt very happy!!  It is wonderful to be an archeologist as you go unraveling the past mystery!!

 

ANTHROPOLOGIST:  Anthropology is a subject I studied in higher secondary and graduation.  I loved the subject but could not work as an anthropologist, as I found less openings, less opportunity and finally my father discouraged me to continue MSC in anthropology.  I got the chance but later joined the training of medical transcription.

 

HISTORIAN:  History is my favorite subject as you know and I am studying for competitive examination that requires good history passion.  Anyway I were a historian, I would have written books on ancient Indian history, my favorite topic.

 

EXPLORER:  Exploring is something I like.  Even in my profession, I travel often to places like Botanical garden in Shibpur, Sundarban, Bakkhali, and if I had lots of money, I would have ventured in far off lands.

 

GEOLOGIST:  Geology is a subject I like and even during my field work, I used to collect stones of unusual color and stone tools of early man.  I could identify them being a study of anthropology and get fascinated by early man's effort to shape their culture with sophisticated stone tools.  I often go to museum and get surprised to see the stones of various colors in the geology department. 

 

TOURIST GUIDE:  Tourism is a field I would love to join.  I would love to accompany my travelers guiding them in the remote forest, hills, mountain, etc.  Tourist guide has encyclopedic knowledge about the region and he is an expert.  Once I met an expert in Sundarban who was a post graduate in English but joined this profession out of love!  He was a good tourist guide.

 

BODY BUILDER:  Body building is something I like.  I love to do exercise and I used to go to gym for 5 years and now stopped going there because of this medical transcription profession.  The 3 shift job takes a toll on me and not only me but all the employees of this back office world!!  I do now the following exercises:

  1. Skipping:  the maximum I can do is 1800 times!!
  2. Yoga.
  3. Jogging.
  4. Using my machines, push up, sit up, dumbbell curling.
  5. I do sit ups with abslimer

 

In all, I created a mini gym in my home and the hours, as you know, are quite flexible!  I now feel good though I do not go to gym.

 

I formerly dreamt of having  a big muscular body but now I stress more on fitness of mind and body.'

 

WRITER:  As you all know, I love to write, I love to write each day of the year.  May be I write not so good but I try to express my thoughts as clearly as possible on any damn topic!!

 

MARKET SURVEYOR:  Survey is something that I did while doing a household survey in Maharashtra among the tribals.  Its interesting to talk with people!  I did the survey on a clinic at Apollo in Gariahat on Patient Satisfaction, which I did with a smile climbing the 3 floors for 2 to 3 hours. 

 

DISK JOCKEY:  I aspired to be a disk jockey when I bought a mobile with FM.  I listened to radio.  I loved to listen to western classical, Bollywood music and more.  I loved to listen to songs and music and lot more.  I dream of doing this profession in the near future.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE JOB IN HOSPITAL:  I did my post graduation diploma in hospital administration from Apollo Gleneagles Hospital and did as distance learning.  I am searching for an administrative job.  In spite of the hype that there are plenty of jobs in healthcare, I found that hardly there is any response when I apply to big hospitals.  Job market seems to boom only in Newspapers and Magazines!!!  It might be good for techies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smallest Car

 

The scientists have used parts of a single molecule to make the world's smallest car.  The tiny car has chassis, axles and pivoting suspension.  The wheels are buckyballs, spheres of pure carbon containing 60 atoms apiece.  The car measures 4 nanometers only!  It is wider than a strand of genes.  A human hair is about 80,000 nanometers thick.  Though other groups have made nanoshaped cars, this car is special in the sense it has wheels in a perpendicular direction to the axles!!

 

Smallest Refrigerator

 

Scientists have developed the smallest refrigerator.  It is pretty cold too!!  The microchip sized fridge can cool objects to -459 degrees Fahrenheit.  The National Institute of Standards and Technology designed this fridge measuring 25 x 15 micrometers.  When the voltage is applied across the sandwich, the hottest electron tunnel from the normal metal through the insulator to the superconductor, the temperature of the normal metal drops dramatically and drains extra heat energy from the objects being cooled.  The fridge is not expensive too.

 

Smallest Laptop

 

Samsung Korea has showcased the world's smallest dual-core notebook.  It is also extremely stylish.  The laptop weighs about 1.9 kg and features a 12.1 inch, 1280 Angstrom.  —– 800 widescreen display.  The laptop is powered on Intel Core Duo T2700 processor which is connected to an Intel 945GM chipset across a 667 MHz from the side bus.  It runs on Windows XP and has a drive too.  It also has superb audio capabilities and HD audio system is boosted with sound technology.  Other features include 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi connectivity along with Bluetooth 2.0.

 

Smallest Cellphone

 

Smartphones and cell phones are getting smaller.  Like a light cherry on a top of ice cream this tiny candy colored mobile phone is the world's smallest cellphone.  The Xun Chi 138 is said to come with built-in 1.3 megapixel camera, a touch screen with handwriting recognition, an MP3 player and support for GPRS connections.  Of course it is possible to squeeze all the bells and whistle into a device that weighs 55 grams and measures 2.64 inches in length.  So it does not come with keypad or extension slot.  The phone has capacity to store 300 contacts including mobile, home, work and fax numbers.

 

Smallest Robot

 

Researchers have built an inchworm like robot.  It is so small you need a microscope just to see it.  The tiny bot measures 6 micrometers wide (about the width of human hair) by 250 micrometers long.  It turns to put a silicon foot out and pivoting like a motor cyclist skidding around the right turn.  Because it makes use of this innovative bending movement and is untethered, it can move freely across the surface without the wires or rails that restricted mobility.

 

 

Walking along a deserted road

The sudden strike in West Bengal on February 6, 2008 has created panic in my mind and in office colleagues.  My night shift going on.   The police fired at Dinhata and 4 people were killed.  The Forward Block in West Bengal called a strike for 24 hours but later when I am writing now, the strike has been called off.  The strike was called mainly because the police fired the protestors.  It is sad that the police had done such a heinous act!  But strikes for every cause ruins life and it affects West Bengal's economy. Generally we come out at 6:30 a.m. and our shift starts at 9 am.  But today we got the chance of moving out early at 4:30 am.  My boss is good.  Actually our boss is our supervisor who works in every shift to assist the employees. 

 

I came out at 5 am.  These strikes or bandh as we call in Bengali are really spoiler of the day.  It spoils your plans and programs of the day.  You feel angry and depressed for not doing your work.

 

The sky was pretty dark at 5 a.m. though winter about to go away still the darkness prevails.  I took a tram from Gariahat and walked along the straight road moving towards Jatin Das Park or Bhawanipore.  As I was walking I could see the chilly weather, I could feel my heart beating, though there was chilly weather, I was afraid to walk on a lonely road.  I was calling for taxi but they are charging Rs. 100 or more.  I finally walked all the way and came near Bhawanipore police station.  I asked the police whether they could drop me near Shyambazar.  But the police man said a straight forward "No!"  So I moved on and on till my legs are aching.  I was wondering whether I have to go home walking.  I fear walking such long distances alone. 

 

My only companion was my radio.  I recently bought a mobile phone of Tata Indicom where I can listen to the radio also.  My friends bought many costly mobiles but I liked this mobile and love to listen to songs and music whenever I am on my way to office or returning home!  Anyway, that is not the point, I listened to songs and was walking till I got a taxi and the taxi charged me Rs. 60 to drop me near my home.

 

My parents were surprised to see me and then I told them to check the news.  They saw and felt that it was truly a reason to return early!  I walked from B.T. Road junction to Paikpara where I stay.  I took a cup of warm tea to warm myself.  I felt relaxed and happy to return early, though I did my job and reached my target.  I felt happy that one day I can return early and felt quite well sleeping a bit long than other days in night shift!

 

 

 

muscle forming genes

The scientists have identified a gene that is the key in forming muscles in zebrafish.  This gene is responsible in switching embryonic cells into muscles.  In the University of Oregon Institute of Neuroscience, Monte Westerfield is a professor of Biology who made this remarkable discovery!  The trigger gene which he identified is Smarcd3.  It must align correctly with the two other genes for muscle formation to begin.  The process of muscle formation is scientifically known as myogenesis.  Smarcd3 made up the chromatid modeling complex made up of the DNA and protein that makes up chromosomes.
