Remembering my grandmother

I remember my grandmother, my dear grandmother who used to tell fairy tales to my brother and me.  In my school life, just after return from school, I used to go to my grandmother who used to tell me fairy tales.  The story telling is an art, which your grandma can do the best.  You will see your mother cannot tell the stories not in the way your dear grandmother tells you.

I used to keep my head in my grandmom's lap.  I have heard that she had 5 children and now all of them are well established.  I have heard that she was a singer and had a job offer from All India Radio.  She used to play Tanpura and I have seen her singing with song books in front of her and playing tanpura.  The sound of tanpura is so melancholy and somber and soothing!!!

I remember my grandmother used to offer sweets to the God and she used to go me the puja offerings to me.  She loved me so much!   She used to cook well.  She had a great skill in weaving and can make good woolen sweaters in the winter.  Her husband was a businessman.  She used to go to a park near my home where "Hare Krishna" chants held.  She used to participate in the devotional gatherings of Tala Park.  I really adore those old women who spent the end of their life with religion.  You may not believe in God but a time will come when you will feel that there is some supernatural force influencing your life.

You will ask me, "What is the role of a grandmother?"  I will say .

  1. A Grandmother is someone who adds value to your life.
  2. A grandmother is someone whose words will vibrate in your mind when you are alone walking along the shades of the tree, thinking of nothing but yourself and your future!!!!
  3. A grandmother can help you understand the complexities of life and teaches your hungry innocent mind of your youth!!
  4. A grandmother is a symbol of idealism.
  5. A grandmother is  a museum.  She has the Knowledge which is like an Oceon!!

What is life without grandmother?

Life without grandmother is like a

  1. Fish without its water!!!
  2. Fairy tales are not only fantasy but they help you stretch your imagination and you love to think on your own!!!!!
  3. She corrects you when you are wrong.
  4. She applauds when you are right!!!!

My grandmother loved me so much and those who miss a grandmother miss a lot in life!! This is not an exaggerated statement!! It is true ..life is so competitive starting from school life .You have to score high marks in exam.  You have to beat others in exam to get the A grade.  .You will ask me why I am telling these things?  She helps you be mentally strong to join the RAT RACE .A rat race is a race that goes on till death!!!  It is a race of earning more, of success, of power, of position, and of everything!!! It is not that you lost something at the expense of other!!  Here comes the role of a grandma she tells you what should be done and what not!  She tells you life is a race win it!!  She tells you life is not  a place to fight but negotiate with sweet words to win hearts!!!!

memories of bangabasi college

I studied anthropology Hons in Bangabasi College.  It is a three year degree course.  The Bangabasi college is the college where anthropology was first started in India.  Later many colleges like Narasinha Dutt College, Habra Sri Chaitanya College also started teaching the subject in degree course.  (http://www.bangabasi.org/ )  This college was established in 1885 by Acharya Girish Chandra Bose.

The college is in Rajkumar Chakraborty Sarani, previously known as Scott Lane.  There is a market around this college till its gate.  The stench of the market can be smelt from the Sealdah flyover.  This is something which will not change in the days to come.  Otherwise the college is good.  It has a strong union. Every time the protests are lead by the leaders of the union!  We are asked to assemble before the principal room leaving our classes.  If such a union was there in our office too, then many of our rights would not have been seized.  Here lies the role of a union.  An organization with a strong union points out the administration, "See here is your fault, correct it or else there will be no classes!!"  This is important in a democratic country like India.  Yes, we need people, who raises voices and if they do not raise voice against injustice, then unscrupulous people will simple "dance over your heard."  As I observe, we are living not in a City of Joy,  but always remember we are living in a City of Lambs.  I call Kolkata, a City of Lambs as there are few who raises voice against injustice.  If voice was raised, then Bappi Sen, the police officer who protested against eve teasing would not have been killed.  This is Kolkata where if you fall down in a road unconscious, there will be plenty of people who will crowd around your unconscious soul, but few are there who will give a helping hand!!  Does narcissism engulfing our personality like sharks??? So I really appreciate the role our college union in the maintenance of discipline of the college.  They can be called the "Second Hand" who is still maintaining the law and order in the college.  A union leader of Bangabasi reading my memoir will be happy to see the name of the college union given its due respect in the days to come! J

The open space in the college was small. I had Zoology and Botany as pass subjects.  English and Bengali are the two languages.  Environmental science was compulsory.  Bangabasi college provided the right atmosphere for the anthropology studies.  The open space in the college is small.  We had a small space and near the gate, there was a counter where we used to submit our fees.  On both side there are staircases that lead to the top.  There are 4 floors.  The college had large balcony.  The college had room where games were played.  Our environmental classes were held at the ground floor and also the language classes.  The Anthropology classes were taken in the second floor.  It was a common room where zoology and anthropology Hons were held.  The anthropology department had 3 segments separated by wooden partitions.  The middle part of the room is the place where our teachers used to take practical classes.  There are cupboards where large number of skulls and prehistoric stone tool casts were kept.  These were used to draw and practice.  Finally the drawing were signed by our madam, Ratna Bhattacharya.

Our classes used to start at 10 a.m., sometimes 11 a.m.  Anthropology Hons classes were held.  The head of the department was Mrs. Ratna Bhattacharya.  The anthropology had 3 divisions.  Physical anthropology, Cultural anthropology and Prehistoric Archeology.  Physical anthropology classes was taken by Mr. Gopal Chandra Mondol.  He taught us well and provided us with notes.  Prehistoric Archeology classes were taken  by Priyadarshini Sengupta.  She gave us a lot of notes and book references.  The college library provided us with a lot of books and I felt motivated to study this subject in graduation as I had studied it in 11 and 12 instead of maths!!!  Cultural anthropology was taught by Mr. Arnab Das.  He has now recently shifted to University of Kolkata.  He was a good teacher whose lecture motivated us and created interest in the cultural study of man!  He provided us with references and recent discoveries. He told us how cultural anthropology developed in India.  Physical anthropology is a branch which deals with human biology and genetics.  This was taught by Mr. Mondol.  He used to teach us drawing diagrams.  Mr. Joydeep Sen used to teach us physical anthropology.  He  took the primatology classes.  The primatology is the study of human and nonhuman primates.  The apes, i.e. gorilla, chimpanzee, orangutan and gibbon were studied as well as the monkeys found in the earth.  It is very interesting to study how the primates evolved and how gradually we evolved from nonhuman to human stage through millions of years of evolution.  The adaptation of the primates to their environment were studied.  Priyardarshini madam used to take class in prehistoric archeology.  She used to give us a lot of notes.  She told us how we excavate fossils, its technique.  Her voice was soft but the way she used to explain will put a scar on your mind for a long, long time!  In fact, the teachers of the anthropology department are really good!

You are thinking why I chose this subject as a graduation subject.  I have studied anthropology at Narasinha Dutt College in class 11 and 12.  I have studied the science stream in Higher Secondary level and  I have not studied maths, I took anthropology as my optional instead of maths.  Isn't it unusual?  Anthropology is something I loved to study and I dreamed of doing research in the subject in the future.  I also got a chance in the post graduation at University of Kolkata.  I did classes there for a few days.  My father advised me to leave and ordered me to join a professional course.  I was first given training in WBCS at Rabindrabharati University at B.T. Road.  Anyway, anthropology is the subject I love and I used to write every year in the college's wall magazine.

No VALUE OF MEDVARSITY DEGREE!!!

medvarsity@gmail.com

Dear Sir,

I have passed from Medvarisity with a post graduate diploma in hospital administration.  I did survey at Apollo Clinic.  I did my contact program at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.  Inspite of such hard work with your study materials, I am surprised to see that there is no campus recruitment.

In the newspapers, we see the statistics that healthcare jobs are booming.  But in reality…………..i am applying to jobs in and around kolkata, even in states far and wide but no response.  Is it that no recruitment is taking place??????

So is it that my money invested Rs. 25000 has gone down the drain????????

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

Pratanu Banerjee

Relax and listen

Relax and listen

To the drops of water

To the chirping birds

To the soft breeze

Listen to your heart

It beats.. "lub-dub"

Listen to your steps

Tap tap tap .

Listen to the rain outside

Listen to the sound of the ice falling

Listen and listen

Nature so beautiful

So lovely is the morning sky

It is light blue with cottons all over

Clouds floating in the sky

Blown by the wind from one end to another

Listen to the sounds of prayers

Bells ringing, children singing

You'll feel great!

You will feel heaven in front of you

When you go to a beautiful temple

The smell of incense mesmerizes

The light of the candle fills your soul

The light of the candle ignites your love of God

You  bow down before the Almighty for His Blessing!

Thinking you are the most prized possession of the Almigh

I love to rhyme

I love to rhyme

Sometime

But as time passed by

I became more concerned with work

Work pressure

Like pressure cooker

Took my poetic sense away

Just like an eagle

Taking its prey away

From its ground

High above the sky

To a distant land

In its hand

Full of claws

Tearing with its beak

It rests in some peak

To take the food.

Its raining outside

I am walking in the rain

Pondering for a while

About this earth and beyond

I wonder what lies beyond this universe

I wonder why men go to wars

Man lives for a maximum of 100

Why waste this time fighting and fighting??

Why waste time in frivolous things?

Why do we kill each other?

Why not live happily?

Humming tunes

A good way to reduce stress is to hum tunes.  As per a recent research report, if you hum a tune, it will help relieve the stress.  The singers have a good quality of life than the others.  The research result is based on 1100 choral singers in Australia, Germany and United Kingdom.  The research shows that people who joined the singing groups tend to be less healthy than the average person.  They are actually happier than the rest.  They are more satisfied with their overall health.  Don Stewart is the head of the public health at Griffith University in Queensland.  The study was based on 21 choirs, among them 5 based from southeast Queensland.  51% of the choralists had long-term health problems more than twice the Australian norm.  They also scored below average on the WHO scale.  98% rated their quality of life as good or excellent.  81% were satisfied and very satisfied with their health.

It is always good to hum tunes.  I hum tunes which I listen in the radio.  I love humming and I used to sing in the choir at St. Thomas' Church School when I was in class 6.  Church music and music of Rabindranath Tagore are very sweet to me.  I love to hum western classical tunes also.  Some Bollywood tunes like "Chori Chori Nazren mili" are worth humming!

Regional Climate influences Body fat

We relate everything under the sun to obesity.  The scientists at Aberdeen University found that Scotland's weather did not help people to shed body fat!  The overweight people tend to have low levels of vitamin D in their blood than those who are slim.  The natural source of vitamin D is sunlight.  Sun makes a rare appearance in Scotland.  So people in this region are deprived from the vitamin D.  If the sun rises some day, the excess body fat absorbs the vitamin.  Thereby it prevents from entering the blood in our body.  The vitamin D absence interferes with the hormone called leptin which tells us that our stomach is full.  A scientific journal called Bone compiled questionnaires.  The survey was done on 3100 women in Scotland between 1998 and 2000.  The study encompasses the time of exposure of the body to the sun and the amount of vitamin D from food sources.  The research finally showed that those with a body mass index of 34 produced 10% less vitamin D than people with average weight.

Unusual Festival

Mud Festival is celebrated at South Korea.  It is the 11th Annual Mud Festival.  The mud festival at Daecheon Beach is worth watching!  It is full of fun and frolic. It features mud wrestling, mud sliding and a mud king contest.  When you will go to South Korea, have fun and enjoy this festival.  It happens on July 15.

Creativity 'An Expression of God-force

In the end it all comes down to enthusiasm.  Your creativity is basically your expression of God-force   ———— Stuart Wilde

Creativity is the spice of life.  Without creativity, life is dull, boring and monotonous.  Think of the famous scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, if he had not thought about the principle behind falling apples in the garden, physics as a subject would not have developed the extent it is now!  Think of the invention of wheel, without which we would not have moved from one place to another parts of the world.  An aeroplane needs wheels to move on land, then on air to fly in the sky high, high above us among the clouds.  Without creativity, the beautiful buildings like Taj Mahal would not have been built.

If genetic engineering have not developed to that extent, we would not have Dolly, the sheep.  The technique of cloning has helped scientific community to a great extent. Except human beings, many animals have been cloned.  Human cloning is ethically not permissible.

Creativity is important in research in humanities.  My father is a professor in English at a college in Howrah.  He tells me that people are getting a doctorate degree and they are doing it in Bengali or some insignificant subjects.  So the very purpose of research, finding something original is lost among the piles of research papers stacked up in the university store room!  Most of the researches are done for the sake of promotion not for the originality in opinion.  I think this is very bad!  It spoils the time of the researcher.  Sometimes I wonder how these thesis are approved by the research guides!  Do they bribe those research scholars?

I forgot to emphasize the point .creativity is a quality.  It is a gift of God.  Anyone playing a piano given all the opportunities, cannot play as sweetly as George Frederick Handel.  Lets talk in Indian context!  Hardly there are few who can sing as sweetly as Lata Mangeshkar!!!  The creativity is a God gifted quality!  You might say that Lata Mangeshkar is a playback singer.  What is the creativity?  The originality lies in the way Lataji sings as per the intonation of the actress she is singing.  She can sing like Madhuri Dixit's voice quality by mimicking her pitch and there lies her originality!!

Creativity is a gift of God when a person from a poor family background scores high marks in a competitive exam and gets a job.  You might say that he has crammed a lot of facts.  But the fact is IQ of the person is high.  Lakhs of students are learning the same facts and figures but we can hardly remember all of them!  The achiever has utilized his creative thinking and made use of his time to produce a high score!!

Creativity changes your lifestyle.  Many people lead a vegetative life.  Nowadays parents try to push their child into dancing, painting, acting and many things.  The purpose is to engage their child in some absorbing activities other than studies.  "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."  This is true!!  You will see that those who study for long hours and have no such hobbies are very dull people!  There should be something to complement the pressure of your studies.  In my case, I started playing synthesizer since class 2.  I loved playing and besides studies, it helped me relieve the stress.  You have heard about Handel (the famous western composer).  He started playing at an early age.  He started improvising tunes.  His tunes are favorite to millions of people round the globe.

We should thank Rabindranath Tagore for the contribution in literature and music.  He was such a versatile personality.  He wrote poetries, prose, drama, novel and every work of literature is something we remember and lakhs of people earn a livelihood by publishing books on Tagore and teaching and research!  In fact, I must add Rabindranath Tagore is William Shakespeare of India.  I have seen photo of Tagore with Albert Einstein in the internet.

Enthusiasm helps us to become creative.  When we love a subject, we start thinking afresh.  We think of our contribution and exert our mind to produce something new, something innovative!!  For example, you are working as a marketing executive.  You have sales target per month.  For promotion, your target gets increased every year.  You chalk down this way.  You start your day by planning and keeping a diary.  Your sales will surely increase with proper planning.  The excitement of a promotion and a promising career will beckon you to become proactive and work accordingly to reach the target!
