The Green Environment of Barackpore Cantonment

It was Sunday.  My friend Jyoti Prakash Mitra invited me to Barackpore.  He invited me few days ago when I was in night shift.  He told me to come to Barackpore Station from where we will travel to different places like the Ganga Ghat, his school (Barackpore Ramkrishna Mission).  So I decided to go to Barackpore on Sunday.

I slept throughout the morning on 28th as the day before was my night shift.  I slept in the afternoon.  I woke up at 3:30 p.m.  I got myself ready and came out of my house with an umbrella.  The sky was cloudy.  There are few birds in the sky.  The atmosphere overall is gloomy.

Jyoti Prakash was waiting for me in a bike.  He phoned me when I was in the Dumdum station just waiting to catch the Krishnanagar Local train.  The train arrived around 4:30 p.m.  Gradually the train moved from one station to the next.  It passed through many small towns like Ranaghat, Titagarh, etc.  I reached Barackpore station around 5:00 p.m.

I called Jyoti Prakash over the phone.  He came with his motor bike.  He took me towards Barackpore Cantonment.  There is a huge signboard .  The road is concrete and the cars are moving swiftly.  The sky above is cloudy and dark and we talked about the possibility of rain.  Still we moved ahead and felt very pleasurable to travel in a bike with soft breeze blowing.  Jyoti drives bike smoothly.  He shows me the army headquarters.  There are beautiful gardens.  He told me colorful birds gather this place, which can be called the second Botanical Garden of Kolkata.  Barackpore is in North 24 Parganas.

As I was moving beneath the trees in the deserted roads, I felt a chill down my spine.  I felt as if I am in another world where there is no noise, no pollution, so much fresh oxygen I have never breathed before.  Some trees are looking like giants looming over my head as I was moving swiftly beneath the lush greenery of the cantonment.  This Sunday trip is such I will remember throughout my life.  It is a trip which enlightens your soul.  You have already entered the world of green trees and I gradually moved to the Barackpore Ramkrishna Mission.  Beside that there is a Ganga river.  The waters of Ganges moving slowly far away and I felt that wonderful, excited and so happy to see the greenery of this part of the world.  Sometimes when I used to watch National Geographic Channel and Discovery Channel, I had the ambition of being a biologist.  A researcher who devotes his life studying nature.  I traveled to Baruipur and Narendrapur and had seen the greenery there.  It was long ago in my graduation days in Bangabasi College when I was studying Anthropology Hons.  Now after such a long time, I am seeing the greenery.  I am seeing plenty of roads with trees on both sides.  In fact, the large number of tree cover can be called a forest.  For hundreds of years, these trees are enriching the ecology of Barackpore.  Man sometimes become so cruel they want to cut the trees?  I think trees should not be cut unnecessarily.

Let there be plenty of trees.

Let there be fresh oxygen that will enlighten your life and refresh your tired soul.

Let there be a place where there is no pollution where you sit in the bench under the shades of hundreds of trees!!!!

Let there be the shade from the Ultraviolet Ray of the sun underneath which you go to your work without using sunscreen cream!

Let the nature's beauty add beauty to your body.

Let there be a place to unwind not in any movie theater or shopping mall but the greenery that will touch your soul!

This is Barackpore Cantonment to me.  A place far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.  A place where you feel as if you are kissing the nature.  You can hug a tree trunk and feel that as if you are loving nature.  Never cut a tree that supports your life with fresh oxygen to you and your family but plant more trees to make this earth a better place to live!!!

Memories of Kolkata’s National Library

National Library is the best place to read.  When I was a student of anthropology Hons at Bangabasi College, I used to go there regularly, at least once a week.  I went there in my spare time to study the authentic reference books.

I used to go there by bus usually Rt. 230   bus whose stand is beside the Zoological Garden at Alipore.  Usually it takes 1 hour to go there.  The location of the place is ideal and the atmosphere is wonderful.  You feel cool and composed and the environment of the reading rooms are excellent.

The entrance of the National Library is huge.  It is painted white.  There are beautifully decorated gardens with flowers of all colors.  Sometimes shooting of Tollywood films were done in this campus.  A prize given to Satyajit Ray, the reputed Bengali director was given at the doorsteps of this library.

The ground floor of the library is meant for the children.  A large number of good story books are there for the entertainment of the children.  Reading books is very important and it helps in the mental growth.  It helps you to think.  It is better than watching television.

I have seen my father who is now a professor at Narasinha Dutt College, Howrah, went to the National Library for his research.  The library is a store house of very old reference books and it has a large number of encyclopedias and reference books.  I have seen wonderful books and felt that this place has its own mystic charm where the smell of the knowledge draws readers far and wide.  A book is such a thing whose company can help you pass hours and you get to know a lot of things.

I have met Satya Bandyopadhyay, an actor who is a regular visitor in this library.  I have met a guy who was an aeronautical engineering student.  This guy used to study astrology.  Isn't it unusual?

National Library has many buildings.  In one building, there are science journals.  A large building was under construction when I used to go there.  It is wonderful to read and to lend books after depositing a certain fees.

In the National Library, I used to go there around 11 a.m. after having my lunch.  I used to stay there till 5 p.m.  I used to take down my notes in shorthand.  I had learnt this skill while I was studying higher secondary science at Narasinha Dutt College.  I learnt shorthand from a book written by Sir Isaac Pitman.  This book is wonderful and the technique of teaching the language which resembles like Chinese is wonderful.  You can take down the notes dictated in English.  I used to take down my class notes at Bangabasi College with the help of shorthand.  So, what I was trying to point out that with the help of shorthand, I used to take down the notes and then transcribe them returning home.

National Library has a canteen, a very big one, where you get tea and snacks.  It is a good place for gossip where at the time of my father's research, he used to go and get his food as he used to stay for long hours.  It is the place where time passes fast.

National Library is a sea of knowledge and you feel as if you are a tiny drop in the ocean.  People come and go in this library which is like incoming and outgoing waves on the sea.  It is a place where membership is free and you get a large volume of information by paying just a nominal sum.  Photocopy facility is available.

If you want to be a member and visit this library, you will definitely be benefited.  A good place to study with its serene and green atmosphere stimulates your mind to read more and taste the vast and huge knowledge that is entrapped in the walls of the library.

keeping the mind fit

It is important to keep the mind fit.  Today we are facing a lot of pressure in the workplace, family life.  The expenditures are increasing and if the income does not get increased to that extent in a certain proportion, then we feel stressed.  There is inferiority complex, which crops up due to failure to achieve your goal.  Now we achieve this with persistent hard work and there is need of enjoyment at intervals of work!

If the mind becomes out of order, then we can hardly live on others help and aid.  People ignore you after showing some sympathy for sometime!  They want to avoid the extra burden.  You become cornered and neglected in this competitive society.

The only solution to this problem is meditation.  Close your eyes and take deep breathing.  Breathe in and breath out.  Inhale and exhale.  With inhalation, try to take up the fresh air and with exhalation, try to dispel all the bad thoughts that crop up in the mind.  Do this for 5 minutes.  You will get a definite result.

Do anulom bilom pranayam.  This is really beneficial.  Breathe only through one nostril keeping the right closed with finger.  Then exhale through the opposite.  Then inhale and then close both of them, keep it for sometime and open up both the nostrils.  In this way, do this for 5 sets 3 times.  You will get a fresh feeling.

Do morning walks regularly.  If possible, carry your radio with you and listen to the soothing music and keep walking!! You will feel great with the inhalation of the fresh oxygen and the soothing music!

Trying to practice some puzzles or quizzes.  This will help you remain alert with the surroundings.  This will help you to think for some time.

There may be high pressure in your job.  But the technique to distress is more important.  You can de-stress yourself with proper sleep.  A good sleep can help you relieve the tensions in life!

Memory of French Rock Concert at Bow Barracks

I was a student of Alliance Francaise de Kolkata.  I did the eight months course between my higher secondary and my graduation at Bangabasi College as an Anthropology Hons Student.  This memory of a rock concert was quite some time ago.  I did not remember the exact date.  Bow Barracks, the place where the concert was held was at Bowbazar.  It is behind Bowbazar police station.  It is an area where a large number of Anglo-Indians live.

A huge stage was built for the concert.  A lot of people gathered.  Some of them seated on the benches, some standing.  The concert was late to start and the attractive feature was Neel and Neel.  Neel Dutt is the son of Anjan Dutt and another guy called Neel is a member of the Bangla Band Krosswindz.  Neel Dutt sang some English songs.  Neel of Krosswindz sang some lovely songs in English.  There was a large number of people some from the institute, some people of the neighborhood, etc.  It is a wonderful concert which attracted many foreign tourists also.  It is lovely to listen to a concert like this.  I have also attended many French festivals while I was a student of Alliance Francaise.

The concert started with 2 Indians and then the French musicians took the center stage!  One after another the French numbers will set your heart racing!  You feel as if you are in another world!  You feel overjoyed and feel as if you are in France!  I studied this language as once I wanted to go to France!  Music is a such a thing where language can hardly be a barrier.  You listen to one tune after the next and feel ecstatic and overjoyed if the beat and the tune is good!  You nod your head and shake your leg till you become tired after dancing for quite some time!   Well this is life!  You work hard and enjoy your life!!  Forget the anxieties that populate your mind!

My 27th Birthday-A Musical Evening

Time has changed.  I have seen in my last birthday many of my guests but this birthday was too slow to start.  It started around 9 p.m.  Yes!! 9 p.m.  It was a rainy evening.  The day started with my office.  I went to office around 7 a.m. in spite of my dad's insistence of not going to office.  I returned to my home around 6 p.m. as the work went on smoothly just like a person moving slowing over a snowy mountain! Whoooooooosh!!!  I returned home, washed myself and dressed up neatly, took the tiffin and sat with my synthesizer.

I started playing my synthesizer.  The company name of the keyboard is Casio.  The model number is Casiotone CT-670.  I started playing synthesizer and played for more than an hour.  I began with piano from tonebank and chose beat 6.5 and started playing the tune in Waltz.  I started playing Charade.  It is one of my favorite tune.  I played this tune in my school, St. Thomas' Church in its auditorium.  I played this tune closing my eyes and audience appreciated.  I was playing this tune this evening on September 16 closing my eyes.  Outside rain was falling slowly.  Then it started to rain heavily.  Then I played Alo Amaar Alo ("Light My Light!") by Rabindranath Tagore.  I played this tune in front of V. Balsara also.  I played it in at the admission test of the institute at Sarat Bose Road, Kolkata called Sourav.  It is a wonderful tune with a lot of beauty in ¾ beat.  In Bengali, we call it "Dadra."  This music has its own beauty.  The chords and the mechanical beats add an additional charm to the atmosphere of my room where the only audience was grandma and my mother was in the next room.  I was playing this tune and the tube light lit room painted in sky blue.  The help of my Orkut friend has helped me to play my keyboard again.  It had stopped playing and a key pressed was starting the beat.  It was cured effectively and the sound of the synthesizer enhanced by "Sayan Electronics."  They charged Rs. 650 and it was cured and now I can play it with satisfaction.  It was a servicing and repairing work that I did after a long time taking the address from Tapan-da who is my friend in the networking site called "Orkut."

I played

Pran Chai Chokkhu Na Chai

Purano Sei Diner Katha

Come September .

Mayabono Biharini ..

Yankee Doodle ..

Que Sera Sera

O Little Town of Bethlehem ..

Jaane Kahaa Gaye Woh Din ..

Jindagi .

Etc.

I invited my office colleague Sanjay Das, a relative who lives in Kalindi, my uncle's brother and his wife and two school friends.  The two school friends are Sourav and Srijan.  Srijan is a homeopathic doctor.  Sourav is a Mass Communications teacher at Gurudas College.  He worked for 9 years with his theater group Spandan along with my school friends.  He also writes in little magazines.  He is a wonderful person who kept me smiling as long as he stayed with wonderful memories of our school life.  Srijan had exam.  So he did not attend my party.  Sourav patiently listened to my keyboard music and my harmonica.  He remarked that he likes this instrument.  He said, "I feel great when I listen to this music."  I showed him some of the photos of Ghatsila and he said he went to that place a year ago.  He said that he visits many places as his students needs to make video.  He assists them in creating their original video.  He is presently the Head of the Department of Gurudas College.  He has cleared NET and his words will definitely make you feel "happy."  I found that he is the nice person who can make you happy in your "Happy Birthday."  He gifted me one of his creative writing.  It was a drama book by him and his friend.  He gave me a birthday greeting card by the group Spandan.  He also gave me a sky blue photo frame which was decorated with colorful flowers on its 4 rectangular edges!  The gift when given by a person really lovable like Sourav add extra charm to it!  It becomes sweet!!  His inspiring words opened a new frontier in a friend's mind.  Just like me he is too busy with his work and he told me in this way:  "Every phase of life has its own charm you need to enjoy it!"  He told me these words as he was moving towards his home.  A wonderful friend is Sourav whose presence leaves a mark on your mind.  He finds a place in your soul with his sheer words.  My uncle's brother, Anirban-da and his wife Sonali gifted with a box of chocolates.  My office, Infovision Software Private Limited, gave me a gift of 3 Cadbury Chocolates wrapped in decorated papers with "Happy Birthday Pratanu" written over it.

In my office, Subhra Sengupta greeted me first after she noticed the announcement on the notice board.  It is the custom of our company to announce the birthday of every employee and everybody gets a gift just like meeeeeeee!! J It makes them smile like this!! JJ J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J J

A smiling face motivates the employee to work hard.  I should thank my company, Infovision Software Private Limited for giving me a gift like chocolate and it is not only 1 but 3 bars of yummy yummy chocolates.  A recent scientific study confirms that chocolate elevates your mood and makes you happy!!  The other employees greeted me and from the management, Amina Ghosh first came and greeted me.  I bought 3 bars of Cadbury Chocolate and distributed the chocos among friends.  My friends were happy.  When I went to give chocolate to Soumendu Banerjee, he enquired about my age and said, "You look so young!"  He is a lovable person whose words will give you a belly laugh!  He is really a charming person!

So the day passed nicely.  I went to sleep around 11 p.m. which was quite late as I needed to wake up in the morning around 6, get prepared and go to the office.  I felt though my visitors came late, their presence gave me a satisfaction, which I cannot forget throughout my life.  I was wish "Happy Birthday" by my Jethima and her daughter "Saheli" who are very close relative to me!  Their absence from Kolkata was fulfilled when they phoned from Mumbai!  Its wonderful to talk with them on this wonderful day!  Their wish added a "Feel Good Factor" in the evening.

Discovery of Queen of Sheba palace

The palace of queen Sheba have been unearthed.  The University of Hamburg made this remarkable discovery.  They have discovered the palace and altar.  It was predicted to have held the Ark of the Convenant in Axum, Ethiopia.  This excavation was supervised by Professor Helmut Ziegart.  He has been supervising a dig at Aksum, Northern Ethiopia since 1999.

An archeological discovery opens up the past of a King or Queen.  It is a wonderful and a great satisfaction when someone discovers an astounding fact!  The world is full of things that are beyond the knowledge of ours.  It may be that you travel to a place and find something that will amaze everyone!!

Life in outer space..is it possible?

The ambition of man going to space has been accomplished long ago.  Now man wants to find life in space.  A mission specialist from Endevour, which returned to earth in March thinks that there is definitely some life out there in space.  He thinks that the life will not be like in the earth.  He told that the possibility of life might be present in any part of the university.  He was in a conference of Tokyo.  He was in a 16-day mission.  Gregory Johnson is another astronaut who also believes that there is life in the distant galaxies.

Now just close your eyes.  Imagine .

You are selected by a space exploration team

You are one of the astronaut ..

You have been trained for months to live in space ..

You move out of this earth ..

You move out in space ..

You travel millions of kilometers ..

You travel and take photographs of the distant stars and planet ..

You went as far as the planet MARS ..

Encircled the planet

Took lots of photos .

Had a lot of fun within the space ship ..

You have probably read Tintin's Destination to the Moon or like that

You feel the beauty of traveling space .

Yes!!! You can travel space ..but u need to have lots of money for the training and journey ..

Its exciting!!  You return to the earth and write about it in blogs ..

You feel on top of the world for having conquered space isn't it?

But at the end of this space exploration, u find that there are a lot of things to do lot of problems in your life why not man solve these things first .?  Why do we waste millions of dollars in space research, ..why?  There can be useful research ..also which will help people live a better life isn't it?

I do not think life in outer space is possible.  If at all there is life, we will not be able to communicate with them as the language of their communication will be totally different from ours isn't it?

Giant vegetables in Zero Gravity Condition

If vegetables can be grown in zero gravity condition, it can grow into huge sizes.  The scientists predict that it can solve world food crises.  The fruits growing in near zero-gravity condition can grow to a huge size and the vitamin content is also high!!  The Chinese scientists fired of 2000 seeds into space with the help of Shijan 8 satellite.  After germination, the seeds were selected for breeding.  On their return, they were cultivated in hothouses producing oversized specimens.  There are also other vegetables like pumpkins, 2 foot long cucumbers, 6.3 kg aubergines, and chilli plants, which resemble small trees.  These plants are grown in Guandong Academy of Agricultural Science.  There are 9.5 kg tomato and enormous watermelons.  This is a big project and a total of 22 provinces taking part.  It has been sold to Japan, Thailand and Singapore.  The plants produce harvests 20% higher than normal.

It is a mystery the scientists have not understood how sending seeds into space produce such gigantic products.  I think, the genetic mutation due to radiation in space is causing such a thing.  This mutation is bringing change in the future morphology of the fruit or vegetable.

Phoonk from Anthropological Perspective

On August 31, I saw the Bollywood film "Phoonk."  It is a film associated with black magic.  I work in a back office in Kolkata and it was my off day.  So I thought it would be better to chill out watching a movie.  I usually watch movie in my DVD player.  This time I thought it would be better to watch a horror movie in the big screen.  So I went to Esplanade and went to the cinema hall named Metro.  It was a 6 p.m. show.  I purchased a ticket costing Rs. 40 and heard from the counter that the film is of 2 hours duration.

Before entering the story .these are some of the pictures I collected through the search engine Google .just have a look at them!!!!!!

Now the story is centered around an aethist, someone who does not believe in God.  An architect was planning to build a house in a city.  During the digging up of the site, his workers found an idol of Lord Ganesh.  The idol is medium sized and made of stone.  The idol was discovered by the workers and the poor people have a lot of respect in the Lord and wants a temple constructed there in the complex of the building.  But the architect thinks that it is quite unnecessary.  This architect thinks that making a building has no value but at the end of the film, it was observed that the supernatural activities will force him to believe in God and he will order a temple.  His people will be very pleased.  At first, he did not pay attention to the request of those illiterate workers.  But later found that there is a supernatural force which is above science and medical science.  He found that medical science could not cure this little girl who was possessed.  She was finally cured by a Tantrik.  This man was recommended by one of his co-worker.  He advised him to consult him.

Now the problem started right from the day of the evening party.  The architect got a lucrative contract and ordered for a party.  But in the hustle and bustle of the party, one of his friends showed him a document and he shouted and hurled to a person who worked in his company.  He shouted, "You fraud!"  He pounced on him and immediately the whole story made a U-turn.  He went on further abusing him and his wife was a little bit abnormal.  The way she laughed was pointed before by his most trusted colleague as unnatural!!  She cursed that this will cost him a lot!!  She shouted and screamed and they were boarded in their car but the architect shouted at them and ordered them to go on foot as the car they are using belongs to the company!!  So this architect naturally had 2 enemies as you can see.  This man's wife practices black magic, which was discovered in the final part of the movie.  She was a woman whose laughter is like the demon!!  Her hair is long!  She is dusky and her eyes are big and expressive!!  The audiences are sometimes laughing at the scenes and sometimes clapping for her performance.

The demonstration of black magic in the movie is really wonderful and this black magic is performed to cause harm to the child of the architect.  I have given the links of the articles where you can read who played in what role.  Now I am going to tell you that black magic is performed by Aswini Kalsekar to cause harm to the child of the architect.  She tried to control her by inserting needles in the breast of the doll.  She made pujas and yajnas on the doll and the harm caused to the doll will harm the child also.  Now in Melanesia, there are practices of these black magic and still these practices are found in modern day among the primitive tribes.

In this article, you will get to know about the voodoo practice of New Orleans .

This website is wonderful .Please read it!!!!

In contrast to the black magic, the film also portrayed white magic and it is shown at the end of the film.  This white magic is used by the Tantrick who helped the child recovered to her normal state.  He used his force by forcing a fan moving above the head of the lady to fall over her head and kill her!! The lady had powers and she was throwing Rajeev in the arm and the tantrik also.

Get to know more about the supernatural practices of the Bedia tribe and this will let you unravel into the deep supernatural world of the Bedias

http://www.jharkhandi.org/bedia_tribe.htm

I would like to tell you more about the film which has similarity with The Exorcist.  The way the child was flung in the air.  It is like P.C. Sorcar's Magic also!  Flying in the air against gravity!!  Sometimes it is a good diversion from the realistic art films!! It is like an oxygen mask.  Sometimes human mind denies God and this denial is sometimes negative by the unnatural acts.  These cannot be explained by science as seen by the psychiatrists who thought they have solved the problem but actually it was solved by the magician, rather a white magician, who helped cure the child from the freaking trauma of the soul possession.

In  connection to the soul possession, I must add that I have heard once from my colleague that the soul stays for a little while before departing from the body.  I have read an article once from the website sacred texts and would like to share:

Well the above link is an interesting point in Bioethics.
