Everyone is Involved- The Great Indian Jhol

The way IPL Jhol is unfolding I don’t know weather it’s getting clearer or murkier by each passing day, but one thing is sure clear that EVERYONE IS INVOLVED.

This seems to be the first ever scam or Jhol (in my knowledge at least) that has kept no bars in any manner as of age, gender, cast, states or status everyone seems involved in one way or the other and who were not able to get a share are crying foul.

So let’s get started, whenever there is a scam or scandal the Gender which is 99.99% involved are Men, but this was a scam with a difference. This jhol seems to have already allocated 33.33% reservation for women ahead of our parliament. So at last women gets their share somewhere at least.

Moving on we have Politician to Beautician involved for former it’s a daily and family affair for the latter it was a proxy affair in affair. Joining them are our industrywala’s, one doing nautanki on silver screen and other in their Board Rooms. One invading Tax, the other eating the cake and having it too(Being on the IPL Board and owing the IPL team too).

Sometime back some bull headed divided us based on our language or states, wanting to issue permit cards to enter some areas. But in here every one was given a free entry no matter if you are a Marathi or a Gujarati, a North Indian or a South Indian they showed that we are one and we can work together no matter if it was for a scam from Kashmir to kanyakumari.

In this Jhol even the young generation has also played their part quiet sincerely, by passing the information when and where required.

In the end I will say it seems for the 1st time after Independence we were truly involved as a United force with no age, no gender, no cast, no states, no language and no religion bar in their, with only one difference during independence everyone was involved for only one cause, in here everyone was involved for their own cause.

Bharti Airtel’s Second African Inning-Zain Acquisition

When in the mid of Feb this year the confirmation came in of talks gaining momentum between Bharti and Zain Indian Inc. waited with fingers crossed and questioning will  Mittal be able to hit a century in its second African inning and close the deal. As we had seen last year Bharti-MTN deal going sour.

With Sunil Mittal signing the $10.7 bn. deal on the 23rd floor of the World Trade Center in Amsterdam the combination have become 5th largest telecom entity in the world putting to rest all doubts and with this Airtel’s call got finally connected in Africa.

Last year Bharti-MTN deal went sour because of the tug of war between the two Governments; with South African Govt. (a 21% stakeholder in MTN) not ready to leave MTN of its roots and its Indian counterpart not ready for a dual listing. The deal could have made Bharti a 3rd largest telecom entity and the biggest out of China.

Bharti-Zain deal will not be as big as MTN, but it will definitely give Bharti a strong foothold in Africa. Zain operates in 15 African countries with a subscriber base of 42 mn., revenue of $2.7 bn. and EBITDA of $900 mn.

Bharti’s bold African Safari Funding Plan

Bharti have valued Zain’s Enterprise value at $10.7 bn. with Zain having a net debt of $1.7 bn. which will result in a payout of $9 bn. of which Bharti Airtel will pay an upfront cash payment of $8.3 bn. and the remaining $700 mn. will be paid after one year. Airtel have already raised $8.3 bn. for the proposed deal, it will get $7.5 bn. from a group of banks led by Standard Chartered and Barclays this loan will be in dollar denomination at around 195 basis points(bps) above the London Interbank Offer Rate, with an average loan tenure of 4.75 years and the other $1 bn. will be a rupee loan from State Bank of India.

To purchase Zain’s African asset Bharti have borrowed $9 bn. which is a hefty debt by any standards for this

Bharti have formed two SPV in the Netherland and Singapore. The SPV will own the African asset and will repay the debt from the cash flow of African operation and if there is a default Bharti will step in.

Analyst have raised concern over Bharti overpaying for this deal looking at $9 bn. which is 10 times Zain’s EBITDA on top of it Zain’s African operation in 2009 reported a loss of $35 mn. A debt of $9 bn. would stress Bharti’s balance sheet which is under-leveraged as of now with debt-equity ratio of 0.4 the current debt will shoot it up to 1.2, but with Bharti opting for a SPV route the debt will not impact its balance sheet in the near term. However the risk associated with it cannot be over looked with Bharti guarantying for the loan.

Challenges Ahead

If we further dissect Zain’s African operation what we see is Bharti have some major challenges in hand

Zain’s African operation will give Bharti a control over 15 African countries which constitute of 44% of total Zain’s revenue in this Nigeria is the largest in terms of subscribers and revenue it has a total 14,936 customers with revenue of $986mn. which accounts for 1/3 rd of Zain’s African revenue, but the Nigerian operation which had a $20mn net income in 2008 is running on a loss of around $88mn. in 2009. 6 other countries are also running on a net income loss which includes Uganda, Sierra leone, Madagascar, DRC, Kenya and Ghana. Bharti will have to turn around this loss making units through ability of controlling cost and scaling up its operation. But there is huge scope of growth in this region with mobile penetration on an average being around 45%. Bharti will be implementing its low cost Indian model for a turn around.

Another major challenge for Bharti will be of improving Zain’s operational efficiency by lowering its operational cost. Zain’s EBITDA margin across African operation is below 30%. But Zain enjoys an ARPU i.e. $8 which is better than bharti’s $4.9 ARPU.

Africa being a different continent altogether Bharti will have to tackle different regulatory, cultural and political hurdles across different countries.

Terror Strikes the Political Parties

If you have come to this post in a glimpse to find answers to the recent terror attacks in my city let me tell you in the every first line that this post like many other post only asks questions, raises issues and hits back hard on our so called politicans.

Of all the posts, articales and messages that I have come accross me for the last four days, all in one voice ask questions, raises issues about the loopholes in our system either political or security. Everyone in one way or the other fails to give any concrete response and solution to the problem. One of the post which i have read asks some Messiah of the hour to stand up and lead the nation, but fails to really make a point with the message that can actually make the Messaih to stand up and lead.

Leading the nation from Front is the major concern with our political class for a decade or so. Be it any party leadership is the clear set back for all of them. In this our of grief in which the nation is today Ruling party is busy with saving its ass and the opposition is engrosed with pointing fingers. One of the most pathetic display of concern by the parties have been to put up Hoardings in the city displaying Politicians with our Martyns Heroes who have laid their lives in the line of duty, the political class cannot be more degrading than this. Because of such behaviour the political class have lost the confidence of the Indian public.

People say vote and bring about change but whom to vote the Question presist, when in our last corporate election I had voted for a new party hoping to get some change in the system but it entailed that they were even worser dividing the nation on the lines of regionalism.

So the question even stays whom to vote or better why to vote.

Why to Vote

Elections are around the corner, yesterday Election Commission announced dates for the Assembly Election for 5 states slated for the comming month. And even the National Election are not far off possibly comming April/May so its again time for political parties to start ralling in targeted states to woo voters to their side.”

So these were exactly the same words I reiterated over the coffee to my collegues yesterday and the obvious reaction were most of them didnt paid any heed of what I was talking, some half-heartly listening gave an obvious ans “So, what do we got to do” my friends always snub me for taking an active interest in politics particularly Indian Politics.

I always debate with them on the

Whenever a woman lies

One day, when a seamstress was sewing while sitting close to a river, her thimble fell into the river. When she cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, ‘My dear child, why are you crying?’ The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen into the water and that she needed it to help her husband in making a living for their family. The Lord dipped His hand into the water and pulled up a golden thimble set with sapphires..

‘Is this your thimble?’ the Lord asked The seamstress replied, ‘No.’
The Lord again dipped into the river. He held out a golden thimble studded with rubies.
2f8548.jpg

‘Is this your thimble?’ the Lord asked. Again, the seamstress replied, ‘No.’
The Lord reached down again and came up with a leather thimble.
2f8558.jpg

‘Is this your thimble ?’ the Lord asked. The seamstress replied, ‘Yes.’ The Lord was pleased with the woman’s honesty and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the seamstress went home happy.
Some years later, the seamstress was walking with her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell into the river and disappeared under the water. When she cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked her, ‘Why are you crying?’ ‘Oh Lord, my husband has fallen into the river!’

The Lord went down into the water and came up with George Clooney. ‘Is this your husband?’ the Lord asked.

2f8567.jpg

‘Yes,’ cried the seamstress. The Lord was furious. ‘You lied! That is an untruth!’ The seamstress replied, ‘Oh, forgive me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I had said ‘no’ to George Clooney, you would have come up with Brad Pitt.

2f8577.jpg

Then if I said ‘no’ to him, you would have come up with my husband. Had I then said ‘yes,’ you would have given me all three. Lord, I’m not in the best of health and would not be able to take care of all three husbands, so THAT’S why I said ‘yes’ to George Clooney.

And so the Lord let her keep him.
The moral of this story is:

Whenever a woman lies,

it’s for a good and honorable reason,
and in the best interest of others. That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it.
 Signed,
All Women

OBAMA - The man for change

OBAMA - The man for change

OBAMA, BARACK OBAMA, BARACK HUSSIEN OBAMA the child of a white christain mother and a black muslim father has finally after a intense battle with CLINTON put forward his papers to claim the WHITE HOUSE.

If he emerges successful for the first time in the history of America a black man will take over the white house.

OBAMA’s strategies is been the key of him sealing the nomination like Obama once said to his fund raiser in the very early phase of his career, when he was running for the Illinois senate, something to the effect that if he(fund raiser) was able to raise $4 mn, he would stand a 40% chance of winning, if he raised $6 mn, he would stand a 60% chance of winning, and if he could raise $10 mn he, Obama, could promise that he would win the election.

Obama won that election.

His strategy hasn't changed since then. He has raised money hand over fist. Much more than Hillary, the early fund raising stalwart, and much, much more than McCain the Republican hopeful.

OBAMA’s main root slogan ”Yes we can change” has been very tactfully kept as an incomplete sentence so if we disscuss the slogan so we can change ‘what’ .

The half-finished sentence of a slogan is a beautiful ploy: it lets the potential voter complete it as he or she wants. To some it is 'Yes we can ' have cheaper oil' to others 'Yes we can ' let the tax cuts remain.' It allows Obama to be different things to different people.

OBAMA’s appeal to a comman man is not only through his strategies, but the main reson of his attraction is been his excellent oration skill the way he connects to his target audicences.

for a example the way he stands up to complete the incomplete sentence in a way that none other can do.

Communism - The Fading Star

Left in India is very powerful for the time being but Leftism at the international map is a marginal force .

Leftist are still convinced that Marxism as a philosophical argument was a very effective tool for social change but its practitioners have been responsible for its demise.

According to me Indian Left are honest and committed bunch of politicians but are unwilling to look inward , to find out what is wrong with Marxism in theory and in practice.

That is the fundamental reason for their unambiguious approach towards Nuclear deal, the consequent of which might result in instability at the centre and lead to early elections . For me this is very surprising as the Indian Left were the only communists apart from Chairman Mao who realised the ground realities and accordingly experimented with Marxism .

Indian communists were also very pragmatic . They had no problem in becoming part of a feudal society with ultra modern state structure . Despite being ideologically convinced that Indian state is semi-capitalist in nature, democracy a facade they joined mainstream politics , did not go underground to launch a movement to overthrow anti-working-class-state- apparatus as Marxists did in Nepal . I am not talking about the fringe players like Naxals or Maoists who call CPM and others as Sarkari Marxists . In fact they were so successful in their approach that in 1957 they created a history when they formed the first democratically elected communist government in Kerala. And E M S Namboodaripad became their first leader to become Chief Minister . It’s a different thing that in the implementation of their government policies at the state level they became so radical that central government dismissed their government .

Despite being dismissed they did not waver from their path , they did not leave mainstream politics , they continued taking part in democratic set up , remained a powerful block , kept occupying opposition space , contested elections , and as they got opportunity formed communist governments in West Bengal , Kerala and Tripura . And gradually they become so glued to the system that CPM even accepted having functional relationship with ultra conservative forces like Jansangh in mid seventies and with BJP in late 80s .

But as success has a self destructive logic . CPM in its pursuit to power lost its revolutionary fervor and became a conservative force which did not try to redefine its ideology with a pragmatic approach to Indian society and accordingly did not re-strategise its vision and policies . It got trapped in it own Jurassic park . So when BJP discovered aggressive Hinduism and backward leaders radicalised caste politics, CPM did not have an answer to it rather they continued indulging in rhetorics . They were not even willing to understand that caste is a reality in Indian society . They were still caught in the class web . For them Ayodhya movement was only a by product of nationalism and an urban phenomena . They failed to understand that Ram Mandir movement could also be a search for a militant identity for a section of Hindus.

Now when all three new militant reflexes of Indian society i.e assertive-caste-identities, aggressive-hinduism and liberal - market-forces-creating-ultra-confident-class are consolidating their political grounds Prakash Karat is still speaking a language which is alien to them and so in direct disconnect with these aspiring sentiments.

I don’t buy this argument that Karat is opposing nuke deal because he has been told to do so by China .

His problem is that at the ideological level he is convinced by old Marxistdogma that it’s a trap laid by Imperialist America to colonise strategic Indian interest and at the political front he believes that Muslims will not vote for CPM if it is seen favouring nuke deal meaning perceived anti-Muslim America. This dual logic has two inherent contradictions . One , America is no longer the same Capitalist nation and world is no longer captive to communism vs capitalism logical divide . At the normative level communism can no longer boast of the final victory for the struggling working class which was the single most inspirational motivating factor in their fight against oppressive capitalism . Communist models all over the world have proved to be equally repressive and anti -freedom to common man . And at the empirical level world has seen disappearance of communist states one after another without any resistance in late 80s and early 90s .

Iraq war has made America realise that powerful economy and military might can not win a war . In modern times, defined by interdependent-global-economy and inter-linked-virtual-web-world, winning of minds are more important than winning a strategic battle . America first time in history is defensive and vulnerable as it has lost the moral battle after the attack on Iraq . Emergence of economically and startegically growing China and slowing down of American economy has created more cracks in its armour .

Two, Indian Muslim is now a changed lot . Al-Qaeda style of terrorism has made them a suspect globally and Modi brand of Hinduism has forced them to strategise their political understanding . They have realised that minoritism and secularism is no guarantee for their physical security . So there is no point in living dangerously . It is more important to have a strategic alliance under the gab of silence and surrender with pro-Hindu forces with the intention to extract better benefits for their physical needs and their families .

Unless Prakash Karat realises these new trends, sheds his old mind set, tries to rediscover new ideological moorings he will remain prisoner of the past and keep the country hostage to his whims thereby confining CPM as a party of only three states . I am sure Karat will not like to lament like my professors that they wasted their lives chasing an utopian dream in the age of virtual world.
